Muse Spark Open does not run on an ordinary Mac. Meta’s supported MLX deployment uses either two Mac Studio computers with M5 Ultra chips and 512 GB of unified memory each, or four Macs with 256 GB each. Every machine needs macOS 26.2 or later, direct Thunderbolt 5 links, enough storage for the full NVFP4 checkpoint, and passwordless SSH from one primary Mac.
Once the cluster is prepared, install mlx-lm on every Mac, create a distributed hostfile.json, and launch the OpenAI-compatible server from the primary machine. This guide explains the hardware decision, network preparation, installation, launch command, API use, command-line generation, memory limits, performance figures, and common failure points.
What Muse Spark Open is and why the Mac setup is unusual
Muse Spark Open is Meta’s open-weight, natively multimodal mixture-of-experts model. It has 816 billion total parameters, 42 billion active parameters, and a 1 million-token context window. The model accepts text, images, audio, and video and generates text.
The total parameter count is not the same as the amount used for every token: the mixture-of-experts design activates a subset of parameters during generation. Even so, the distributed checkpoint and runtime require much more memory than a typical workstation provides. Meta AI Research stated on October 15, 2026: “Muse Spark Open is the first model in its class to run on your desktop using two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios with the latest MLX framework.” That statement describes a two-computer desktop cluster, not a single 512 GB Mac.

Supported local layouts
| Layout | Required memory | Interconnect | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-Mac cluster | Two M5 Ultra Mac Studios, 512 GB unified memory each | Direct Thunderbolt 5 connection between the Macs; Meta recommends two cables between each pair | The reference desktop configuration named by Meta |
| Four-Mac cluster | Four Macs, 256 GB unified memory each | Direct Thunderbolt 5 links between every pair, with two cables per pair recommended | Spreads memory over more systems but adds hardware and administration |
These are the supported distributed arrangements in the Mac cookbook. They should not be generalized to a single Mac with less memory, a slower network, or an older operating-system release.
Check the prerequisites before buying or installing
Confirm every item below before downloading the checkpoint. A missing cable, an unsupported macOS release, or insufficient local storage can prevent the server from starting even when the Python package installs successfully.
- Macs: either two M5 Ultra Mac Studios with 512 GB unified memory each, or four Macs with 256 GB each.
- Operating system: macOS 26.2 or later on every participating Mac.
- Interconnect: a direct Thunderbolt 5 link between every pair of machines. The cookbook recommends two cables per pair to increase link bandwidth.
- Storage: enough free disk space for the complete Muse Spark Open NVFP4 checkpoint on every Mac, not merely on the primary machine.
- Administration: passwordless SSH from the primary Mac to every other Mac.
- Software: a working Python and
pipinstallation on each machine so thatmlx-lmcan be installed consistently.
Memory is the hard limit. Hugging Face’s 2026 guidance says the 3-bit quantization needs more than 256 GB of RAM. A 256 GB machine therefore does not provide a comfortable single-system target for that quantization; the four-Mac arrangement distributes the workload instead.

1. Update and identify every machine
Install macOS 26.2 or a later release on all Macs, apply the same MLX and Python setup to each one, and give the computers stable names on the local network. Choose one Mac as the primary controller. The primary Mac will run mlx.launch and coordinate the workers.
2. Connect every pair directly
Use direct Thunderbolt 5 connections rather than routing the cluster through an ordinary Ethernet switch. For two Macs, connect the pair directly. For four Macs, provide a direct link between every pair as required by the cookbook; two cables per pair are recommended to increase available bandwidth.
The cabling and topology are part of the deployment, not an optional performance tweak. Distributed inference continually moves data between machines, so a topology that does not expose the expected Thunderbolt/RDMA paths can fail during initialization or run far below the published figures.
3. Make sure the checkpoint fits locally
Reserve disk space on every Mac for the full NVFP4 checkpoint. The distributed launcher may need to read model files on each participating system, so placing the files only on the primary Mac is not a supported assumption. Keep additional space for Python packages, caches, logs, and temporary files.

Install MLX-LM on every Mac
Run the following command separately on the primary Mac and on each worker:
pip install -U mlx-lm
Installing on every machine avoids version drift and ensures that the launcher, server, tokenizer, and model code are available wherever a worker process starts. Hugging Face’s general MLX instructions also show the non-upgrading form:
pip install mlx-lm
Use one consistent Python environment across the cluster. If your shell selects a different pip than the Python used to launch MLX, install with the corresponding interpreter’s pip and verify that mlx.launch and mlx_lm.server resolve in that same environment.
Configure passwordless SSH
The primary Mac must be able to open SSH sessions to each worker without an interactive password prompt. This lets mlx.launch start and manage processes across the cluster.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- On the primary Mac, create or use an SSH key suitable for cluster administration.
- Install the public key in the authorized keys for the same account on every worker.
- Confirm that host names resolve consistently from the primary Mac.
- Test each connection before attempting a model launch.
For example, the cookbook suggests a check like:
ssh mac-studio-2.local 'echo ok'
Each worker should return ok without asking for a password. Repeat the test for every worker name that will appear in the host file. If this command hangs or asks for credentials, fix SSH before investigating MLX errors.
Create the distributed host file
Create hostfile.json on the primary Mac. It must list the participating Macs and the Thunderbolt/RDMA details that MLX uses to build the distributed communication fabric. The exact JSON shape is generated or documented by mlx.distributed_config; use that utility rather than inventing fields or copying a host file for a different topology.
Check all of the following before launching:
- Every machine in the intended cluster appears exactly once.
- The names or addresses match the names that succeeded in the SSH tests.
- The Thunderbolt and RDMA interfaces selected in the file are the directly connected interfaces, not an unrelated Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter.
- The file is readable from the primary Mac and uses valid JSON.
- The same physical topology described in the file is present in the room.
A malformed host file can look like a model or memory problem because the launcher may fail before the server has loaded any weights. Validate the distributed configuration first.

Launch the Muse Spark Open server
From the primary Mac, run Meta’s distributed launch command:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsmlx.launch --hostfile hostfile.json --backend jaccl --env MLX_METAL_FAST_SYNCH=1 --
mlx_lm.server --model meta-models/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4 --port 8080
Each part has a specific role:
mlx.launchstarts the distributed MLX job across the machines listed in the host file.--hostfile hostfile.jsonpoints to the cluster description.--backend jacclselects the communication backend used by this deployment.--env MLX_METAL_FAST_SYNCH=1sets the Metal synchronization environment variable for the launched processes.- The
--separator ends launcher options and begins the server command. mlx_lm.serverstarts the MLX-LM server.--model meta-models/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4selects the NVFP4 Muse Spark Open checkpoint used in Meta’s command.--port 8080makes the service listen on port 8080.
Startup can take time while each Mac discovers or loads its checkpoint and establishes the distributed links. Keep the terminal open and read the first error from the primary process; later worker errors are often consequences of the initial failure.
Call the OpenAI-compatible API
When the server is ready, send requests to the OpenAI-compatible service on port 8080. Configure your client’s base address to the primary Mac and port, then use the request schema and multimodal content format in Meta’s deployment documentation. The model can accept text, images, audio, and video, but the content fields must match the server’s documented schema; do not assume that a text-only payload can be extended with arbitrary media keys.
For a text request, provide the model identifier exposed by the running server, a conversation or prompt, and generation controls supported by the deployment. For an image, audio, or video request, encode or reference the media exactly as the deployment documentation specifies, and check that the client sends the correct MIME type and content structure.
The API is served by the primary Mac. Other devices on the same network can use that host and port if macOS firewall rules and network routing permit it. Keep the service on a trusted network or add authentication and access controls in front of it; the basic launch command does not, by itself, describe an internet-facing security layer.

Hugging Face documents a separate command-line path using an MLX quantization:
mlx_lm.generate --model mlx-community/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-oQ3e
--prompt "Explain convolutional networks like I am 5"
--max-tokens 5000
This example uses mlx-community/Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-oQ3e, which is a different quantized model identifier from the NVFP4 checkpoint in Meta’s distributed server command. Do not substitute one name for the other without checking the quantization, memory requirement, and deployment instructions for that checkpoint.

The --max-tokens 5000 value is a generation limit for the example, not a promise that every prompt will produce 5,000 useful tokens. Lower it for short answers or raise it only when your memory budget and application require longer output.
Control reasoning effort
Muse Spark Open reasoning cannot be disabled. Hugging Face’s 2026 guidance reports xhigh as the default reasoning effort and recommends setting reasoning effort to low when you want fewer reasoning tokens for an easier request.
Use the reasoning control exposed by the server or client exactly as documented for your deployment. A lower setting can reduce latency and output-token consumption on straightforward tasks, but it does not turn reasoning off. If a client does not expose the setting, the server will use its documented default.
Understand memory and performance figures
The following numbers come from published 2026 material and apply only to the stated test conditions:
| Figure | Condition or qualification |
|---|---|
| 816 B total parameters; 42 B active parameters; 1 M-token context | Model specifications reported by Meta AI Research and Hugging Face in 2026 |
| More than 256 GB RAM for the 3-bit quantization | Hugging Face guidance; this is a memory requirement, not a recommended amount of free disk space |
| About 344 GB model memory and about 21 tokens per second | Hugging Face test on an M3 Ultra system with 512 GB; not a guarantee for another Mac, quantization, prompt, or software version |
| More than 36 tokens per second | Apple Machine Learning Research result on a four-Mac Studio cluster; published cluster conditions do not represent every four-Mac arrangement |
Generation speed varies with prompt length, output length, reasoning effort, media inputs, quantization, thermal state, MLX version, and interconnect performance. Treat the figures as reference points for capacity planning, not as a benchmark promise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose between local clusters and hosted inference
There are three practical ways to use Muse Spark Open. The right choice depends on whether you value local control, simpler operations, or avoiding a large hardware purchase.
| Option | Hardware or hosting | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-Mac MLX cluster | Two M5 Ultra Mac Studios with 512 GB each, plus Thunderbolt 5 cabling | Local control, privacy, and the reference desktop arrangement | Very high hardware cost and a specialized networking setup |
| Four-Mac MLX cluster | Four Macs with 256 GB each, plus links between every pair | Distributing memory across more systems | More machines, cables, operating-system updates, and administration |
| Hosted endpoint | A documented hosted service such as a Hugging Face endpoint | Trying the model without purchasing and operating the local cluster | Provider charges, account requirements, network dependence, and possible limits on model or multimodal support |
Compare the options on total memory, number of machines, interconnect bandwidth, privacy, recurring operating cost, and setup complexity. A hosted endpoint avoids Thunderbolt and SSH work but moves control of availability, data handling, and performance to the provider. A local cluster keeps inference under your administration but requires you to maintain every Mac and cable.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
The server exits before loading the model
- Confirm that
hostfile.jsonis valid and contains every intended worker. - Run the passwordless SSH test to each worker from the primary Mac.
- Check that every Mac is on macOS 26.2 or later and has the same MLX-LM installation.
- Verify that the model files exist locally where the distributed job expects them and that each Mac has enough disk space.
SSH asks for a password or cannot resolve a host
Fix key installation, account names, host names, and local name resolution first. The launcher cannot reliably start workers when a manual prompt or an unresolved .local name interrupts the session.
Workers cannot establish the distributed link
Compare the physical cabling with the host file. Ensure the listed interfaces are the direct Thunderbolt/RDMA interfaces and that every pair has the required connection. Recreate the configuration with mlx.distributed_config if interface details were entered by hand.
Memory errors occur during loading
A 3-bit quantization requiring more than 256 GB of RAM will not fit comfortably on a 256 GB single system. Use the supported four-Mac distribution or the two 512 GB M5 Ultra arrangement, and account for runtime overhead beyond the raw checkpoint size.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Generation is slower than the published rate
Check whether you are comparing the same quantization, prompt size, reasoning effort, cluster size, and interconnect. The approximately 21-token-per-second result was measured on an M3 Ultra 512 GB system, while the more-than-36-token-per-second result came from a four-Mac Studio cluster. Neither number is a universal guarantee.
A multimodal request is rejected
Use the exact content structure and media encoding documented for the Muse Spark Open deployment. An OpenAI-compatible server describes the general API style, not necessarily every accepted image, audio, or video field. Start with a text request, then add one media type at a time while checking the server’s documented schema.
Operational and security practices
- Keep all Macs on a consistent macOS and MLX-LM version before changing the model checkpoint.
- Record which host name is primary and which machines are workers so that a failed node can be isolated quickly.
- Protect the SSH keys used for cluster control and remove access for accounts that no longer administer the machines.
- Do not expose port 8080 directly to the public internet without an authentication and network-protection layer.
- Monitor free disk space because model caches and logs can grow after the initial installation.
- Recheck model, quantization, hardware, macOS, and provider support when updating: the published material is from October 15–16, 2026 and these details can change.
Bottom line: plan for a cluster, not a single Mac
Muse Spark Open with MLX on macOS is feasible when you build the supported distributed system: two 512 GB M5 Ultra Mac Studios or four 256 GB Macs, macOS 26.2 or later, direct Thunderbolt 5 links, local checkpoint storage, passwordless SSH, and a correctly generated host file. Install mlx-lm everywhere, launch the NVFP4 server from the primary Mac with the documented mlx.launch command, and call its OpenAI-compatible service on port 8080. If that hardware and administration burden is not justified, a documented hosted endpoint is the simpler alternative.
