Mosh is a companion to SSH for interactive terminal sessions that must survive Wi-Fi changes, laptop sleep, roaming between networks, and brief connectivity loss. Install the mosh package on both your computer and the VPS, confirm that ordinary SSH works, allow Mosh’s UDP port range through every firewall, and connect with mosh user@host. SSH still performs authentication and starts the remote helper; the terminal then runs over an encrypted UDP connection.
The most common failure is simple: SSH is allowed, but the UDP port selected by Mosh is blocked by the VPS firewall, cloud security group, NAT, or an intermediate network. The steps below cover installation, non-standard SSH ports, restricted UDP ranges, diagnostics, and the cases where SSH remains the better tool.

- A local client running a supported package manager and a VPS running a Unix-like operating system.
- The
moshpackage installed on both ends. Installing it only on the VPS is insufficient because the localmoshprogram launches the session. - A working SSH login, including the key, password, user account, and hostname or address you intend to use. Mosh reuses those SSH credentials.
- Permission to change the VPS host firewall and, if applicable, the cloud provider’s firewall or security group.
- A routable address for the VPS. If it is behind NAT, you must be able to forward the selected UDP ports to it.
Test SSH first. For example, run ssh user@vps.example.com and make sure you receive a shell. If SSH authentication or name resolution fails, fix that problem before testing Mosh; Mosh uses SSH to authenticate and start its server helper.
Install Mosh on the VPS and local computer
Ubuntu or Debian VPS
On an Ubuntu or Debian VPS, update the package index and install Mosh:

sudo apt-get install moshRun the same installation on a local Debian or Ubuntu client if it does not already have Mosh. The package name is also mosh on those systems.
Other client and server platforms
The official Mosh installation instructions provide package-manager commands for Fedora-based systems using dnf, Alpine using apk, Arch-based systems using pacman, macOS through Homebrew or MacPorts, and FreeBSD and OpenBSD. Use the command appropriate to your operating system, then verify that the executable is available with mosh --version or your platform’s package query. The client and VPS should use compatible current Mosh packages.

Check the remote helper
Mosh does not install a permanent daemon. When you connect, SSH starts an unprivileged mosh-server process under your remote account. It lives for the connection and exits when that session ends. The helper does not need root privileges. By default, it waits up to 60 seconds for the Mosh client to complete the hand-off after it starts.
Open the UDP ports Mosh actually uses
SSH normally uses a TCP port, but Mosh’s persistent terminal traffic uses UDP. By default, the server chooses one UDP port from 60000 through 61000. Permit that range in every filtering layer that can affect the VPS:
- The VPS operating-system firewall, such as the rules managed by your distribution.
- The cloud provider’s firewall, security group, or network access list.
- A NAT gateway or router, if the VPS has a private address. Forward the chosen UDP range to the VPS, as well as the TCP port used by SSH.
Allowing only the SSH TCP port is not enough. A successful SSH login followed by a message that no UDP data is arriving usually means the Mosh hand-off reached the server but the selected UDP port cannot return traffic to the client.
Use a narrower range when appropriate
You can reduce the exposed range for a small number of concurrent sessions by selecting a range with -p:

mosh -p 60000:60010 user@vps.example.comThis asks the remote Mosh server to choose a port from 60000 through 60010. The setting controls the server-side Mosh UDP port range; it does not change the SSH port. Your firewall and cloud security group must allow exactly the range you choose. A fixed port can be selected by using the same number at both ends of the range, provided your deployment has a reason to reserve that port.
Firewall planning for multiple users
Each active Mosh session needs a UDP port. A range of 11 ports, such as 60000–60010, can support only a limited number of simultaneous sessions before allocation becomes a problem. The default 1001-port range is simpler for a shared VPS or many users, while a narrow range reduces the number of open ports. Whichever range you select, document it in the host firewall and provider firewall so the two layers do not drift apart.
Make your first Mosh connection
Standard SSH port
After installing Mosh locally and on the VPS and opening UDP access, connect with:
mosh user@vps.example.comMosh first invokes SSH to authenticate as user and launch mosh-server. The server reports its chosen UDP port and connection details through that SSH channel. The client then switches the terminal to an encrypted, long-lived UDP datagram connection. Once the switch completes, temporary loss of the original network path can be tolerated better than with a conventional SSH terminal.

If SSH listens on TCP port 2222 instead of port 22, pass an SSH command explicitly:
mosh --ssh="ssh -p 2222" user@vps.example.comThe quoted value tells Mosh which SSH command to run for authentication and server startup. It does not select a Mosh UDP port. You still need to allow the server’s UDP range separately. You can combine the SSH override with a restricted UDP range when needed:

mosh --ssh="ssh -p 2222" -p 60000:60010 user@vps.example.comWhen the server binary is not on the remote PATH
If the remote account cannot find mosh-server, specify its absolute path:
mosh --server=/path/to/mosh-server user@vps.example.comUse the path where your package manager installed the binary, and ensure the account can execute it. This option changes the helper command on the VPS; it does not install the binary for you.

Multihomed or proxy-based VPS setups
A server with several network interfaces, or a proxy arrangement that changes which address should receive UDP, may require an explicit bind behavior. Mosh provides --bind-server=any or an explicit address. Use these options only when the default bind address is wrong for your topology; binding to an unintended interface can make a session unreachable even though the firewall appears open.
Understand the SSH-to-UDP hand-off
Mosh does not replace SSH authentication. The Mosh client logs in through SSH, and you present the same credentials you use for SSH, such as a password or public key. SSH starts the unprivileged server helper, which chooses a high UDP port and sends the connection information back over SSH.
After that startup exchange, the interactive terminal uses an encrypted UDP datagram protocol designed for responsiveness. Mosh maintains terminal state on both sides, so it can redraw the screen after packets are lost and continue when the client changes IP address. Local echo and line editing remain responsive during high latency or intermittent connectivity, which is why Mosh is useful on mobile links and laptops that sleep or roam between networks.

Troubleshoot “SSH works but Mosh hangs”
1. Identify where the hand-off stops
If SSH authentication succeeds but Mosh cannot connect, the likely sequence is that SSH started mosh-server and the client cannot exchange UDP packets. The Mosh FAQ describes a diagnostic such as “Nothing received from the server on UDP port 60003.” That message means the server started but the client did not receive traffic on the selected UDP port.
2. Check both firewall layers
- Confirm that the VPS host firewall permits inbound and outbound UDP for the configured range.
- Confirm that the cloud firewall or security group permits the same UDP range to the VPS.
- If NAT is involved, verify that the selected range is forwarded to the VPS’s private address and that return traffic is allowed.
- Check that the rule applies to the VPS’s public address and the correct network interface.
Do not test only TCP connectivity to the SSH port; a successful TCP test says nothing about UDP reachability.
3. Confirm the address advertised to the client
A VPS with private and public interfaces, a reverse proxy, or unusual routing can cause the server to advertise an address the client cannot reach. Confirm the VPS’s public address and compare it with the address used by the Mosh client. If the server binds to the wrong interface, try --bind-server=any or provide the required explicit address after validating your routing and firewall rules.

4. Verify the selected port and range
When you use -p, make sure the exact range is open everywhere. For example, opening only 60000–60005 while running -p 60000:60010 leaves five possible selections blocked. Conversely, opening a narrow range while several sessions are active can exhaust available ports. Temporarily test with the default 60000–61000 range if your security policy allows it, then narrow the range after connectivity is proven.
5. Inspect traffic and listening sockets
For a persistent failure, inspect the server while starting a connection. Tools such as netstat can show UDP sockets; nc (netcat) and socat can help test UDP behavior; and tcpdump can show whether packets arrive at or leave the VPS. Capture on the interface carrying the public address and filter for the selected high UDP port. Packets visible on the VPS but not reaching the client point to an upstream firewall, NAT, or return-path problem. No packets visible on the VPS points to the cloud firewall, routing, or an incorrect address.
6. Check timing and the remote executable
The server waits only 60 seconds for the client after it is launched. A slow or interrupted hand-off can therefore expire even when the package is installed. If the client reports that the helper cannot be found, use --server=/path/to/mosh-server and verify execute permission for the remote account. Make sure the remote locale is UTF-8; Mosh expects UTF-8 settings for reliable character display.

Mosh and SSH: choose the right transport

Use Mosh for an interactive shell where resilience and responsive editing matter. Keep ordinary SSH for tunnels, SOCKS or local/remote forwarding, X forwarding, sshfs, file-transfer workflows built around SSH, and automation that depends on SSH’s channel features. It is common to install both and choose per task.
Security and operational considerations
Limit exposure without breaking sessions
Opening UDP 60000–61000 increases the number of reachable ports compared with SSH alone. A narrow range such as 60000–60010 reduces exposure for a small deployment, but it must be large enough for the number of concurrent sessions and must be allowed in every network layer. Restrict source addresses in the cloud firewall when your users connect from predictable networks, while remembering that roaming clients may come from changing addresses.
Keep SSH protections in place
Mosh inherits the SSH login path, so continue using the SSH hardening that protects the VPS: strong keys or passwords, least-privilege accounts, and the intended SSH listening port. Changing SSH from port 22 to another TCP port does not remove the need for Mosh UDP rules; it only changes the command supplied with --ssh and the TCP firewall rule.
Use UTF-8 locales
Set a UTF-8 locale on the client and VPS for reliable display of non-ASCII characters. Incorrect locale settings can look like terminal corruption even when networking is healthy. Correcting the locale is separate from opening ports or changing the SSH command.
Practical command checklist
- Install Mosh on the VPS and local client.
- Run
ssh user@hostand verify a normal shell. - Allow UDP 60000–61000 in the VPS firewall and cloud firewall, or choose and allow a narrower range.
- For NAT, forward the selected UDP range and the SSH TCP port to the VPS.
- Connect with
mosh user@host. - For SSH on port 2222, use
mosh --ssh="ssh -p 2222" user@host. - For a constrained range, use
mosh -p 60000:60010 user@host. - If the helper is outside the remote
PATH, add--server=/path/to/mosh-server. - If a multihomed setup advertises the wrong interface, evaluate
--bind-server=anyor an explicit bind address. - If SSH succeeds but Mosh reports no UDP data, inspect both firewalls, NAT forwarding, the advertised public address, and packet flow with
netstat,nc,socat, ortcpdump.
When Mosh is the wrong tool
Mosh is specifically a resilient interactive-terminal protocol. It does not provide X forwarding, SSH port forwarding, or sshfs. It also does not eliminate the need for SSH credentials or an initial SSH connection. If your job is to carry another protocol through a tunnel, mount a remote filesystem, forward a database port, or run a scripted SSH channel, use ordinary SSH instead. Installing Mosh alongside SSH gives you a choice rather than forcing every workload through one transport.
