Install GNU Midnight Commander from your Linux distribution’s repository, then run mc inside the server’s terminal or SSH session. On Ubuntu or Debian, use sudo apt update && sudo apt install mc; on Fedora or a Red Hat-family system, use sudo dnf install mc. Midnight Commander opens a two-panel text interface for browsing, copying, moving, deleting, searching, viewing and editing files without leaving an SSH terminal.
This guide explains the panel model, safe file operations, startup-directory options, built-in tools, subshell behavior and the fixes to try when terminal keys such as Ctrl+O do not work.

What Midnight Commander does on a server
GNU Midnight Commander (usually abbreviated to mc) is a full-screen, text-mode file manager. Its main screen keeps two directory panels visible at once, so one panel can act as the source and the other as the destination. It works in a regular Linux console, a terminal emulator and an SSH connection, making it useful on servers where a graphical file manager is unavailable.
Beyond directory browsing, the project documents operations for copying, moving and deleting files and directory trees, searching for files, running commands in a subshell, and opening an internal viewer, editor and diff viewer. It also supports virtual file systems for archives and some remote locations, background operations and configurable user menus. Those capabilities make it a powerful interactive tool, but they also mean that a mistaken confirmation can change a large part of a server filesystem.

Prerequisites and a safe starting point
You need an account that can log in to the server and a terminal capable of displaying a full-screen text application. Install with an account that can use sudo, or ask an administrator to install the package. After installation, do normal file work as the least-privileged account that can complete it.
- Confirm the server distribution and package manager before installing.
- Know which directories you intend to inspect or change.
- Use
sudoonly for the particular command that needs elevated permissions; do not run the entire interactive session as root unless there is a clear administrative reason. - Keep a rollback or backup plan for any bulk move, overwrite or delete.
- Do not use
mcwhere a script expects plain, line-oriented standard output. It is an interactive full-screen program.

sudo apt install mcThe package manager resolves the appropriate build and its dependencies. Installing this way also gives you the distribution’s normal update and security-maintenance path.
Fedora and Red Hat-family systems
On Fedora and systems that provide the package through dnf, run:
sudo dnf install mcRepository availability can vary by the exact release and enabled repositories. If dnf reports that no package is available, verify the release’s enabled repositories with the system administrator rather than downloading an unrelated binary.
Verify the installed command
Check that the executable is on your PATH and print its version:

Start mc locally or through SSH
Launch after connecting
Connect to the server normally, then start the program at the shell prompt:
ssh user@example-server
mcThe interface takes over the terminal until you exit it. Your file operations run with the permissions and environment of the SSH account that launched it.
Choose predictable starting directories
You can pass zero, one or two directory paths:

Passing both paths is helpful for repeatable administrative work: you can see the intended source and destination as soon as the program opens instead of relying on a previously saved panel location.
Read the two-panel interface
The two directory panels occupy most of the screen. Each lists entries in one directory. A selection bar identifies the currently highlighted entry, and one panel is active at a time. The active panel is where keyboard navigation and selection occur; many file operations use the unselected panel as their destination.
Near the bottom is a shell command line. Beneath it, the function-key bar shows the actions available in the current layout. If the menu bar is hidden, press F9 to reveal it. Press Tab to switch the active panel. Press F1 for context-sensitive help and F2 for the configurable user menu.
Terminal emulators can label or intercept keys differently. Treat the labels visible in your session as authoritative rather than assuming that a particular function-key number is available.
Panel roles and destination safety
Before a copy or move, look at both complete panel paths. The highlighted file is selected in the active panel, while the opposite panel commonly supplies the destination. This relationship is convenient for two-directory transfers but dangerous if the opposite panel is still pointed at a production, system or backup directory. Change panels with Tab, navigate to the intended destination, and re-check both paths immediately before confirming.

Navigate and select files
Move through directories
- Use the arrow keys to move the selection bar through the current listing.
- Open the highlighted directory using the panel’s normal directory-open action.
- Move to the parent-directory entry when you need to go up.
- Use Tab to activate the other panel and repeat the process there.
The panel key bindings documented by your installed version may provide additional shortcuts. If you are unsure what a key does, press F1 before operating on a live directory.
Select several entries
Use the panel’s selection controls to mark the files or directories that belong in the operation. Selection is independent in each panel, so inspect the highlighted and marked entries before choosing Copy, Move, Delete or another action. For a large set, first test the operation with one harmless file and confirm that the resulting destination and permissions are what you expect.
Complete filenames quickly
The project README documents filename completion with Alt+Tab. Completion is useful on long paths and reduces typing errors, but still verify the completed name: a similarly named directory can send a command or transfer to the wrong location.
Copy files and directories safely
- Activate the panel containing the source entries.
- Navigate the other panel to the exact destination directory.
- Mark the files or directories to copy.
- Choose the Copy action shown in the function-key bar or menu.
- Read the destination and overwrite prompts; cancel if either path is unexpected.
- After completion, inspect the destination panel and check a representative file.
Copying a directory tree can involve many files, hidden entries, ownership differences and permission errors. A successful dialog does not mean every file was readable under your account. Review any error messages and compare counts or representative paths when completeness matters.
When copying between a local directory and a virtual file system such as an archive or remote location, start with a small, reversible transfer. Confirm that the target format preserves the attributes your application needs before initiating a large batch.
Move, rename and delete
Move or rename
Use the Move or Rename action exposed by the key bar after checking the source selection and the opposite panel. In the common two-panel workflow, the unselected panel is used as the destination. A rename within the same directory is therefore still a filesystem change, even though no data crosses to another panel.
Read collision and overwrite prompts carefully. If the destination already contains a file with the same name, stop and determine whether replacement is intended. For a production deployment, prefer a reversible staging directory and keep the original until the new copy has been verified.

Delete
Deletion can remove individual files or entire directory trees. Select only the intended entries, invoke Delete from the visible action bar, and inspect the confirmation text for the exact path and scope. Do not treat a highlighted directory as a harmless container: recursive deletion can remove everything beneath it.

If you are uncertain, cancel, switch to the internal viewer or a shell listing, and identify the path again. Least-privilege access limits accidental reach, but it does not undo a deletion that your account was authorized to perform.
View, edit and compare content
Midnight Commander includes an internal viewer and editor. Use the viewer first when you only need to inspect a configuration, log or script; it avoids accidentally entering an editing mode. The editor is appropriate when you deliberately need to change a text file and have checked its ownership, syntax and backup status.
The project also documents an internal diff viewer for comparing files. A practical review sequence is:
- Open the original and proposed files in the viewer or diff tool.
- Check the complete paths, timestamps and sizes.
- Only then open the editor for an intentional modification.
- Save to a staging or backup copy when the service cannot tolerate an in-place mistake.
- Validate the edited file with the application’s own configuration-check command before restarting a service.
Binary files, compressed data and very large logs may not be suitable for an interactive editor. Use the viewer for a quick inspection and a specialized command-line tool when format-aware validation is required.
Run shell commands without leaving the panels
The command line near the bottom lets you enter shell commands while keeping the panels visible. Commands execute with the SSH account’s permissions, environment and current working context. A command that needs administrative access should request sudo for that command, not turn the whole file manager into an elevated session.
For operations that change files, quote paths containing spaces or shell metacharacters and confirm the panel selection separately from the command line. The file manager’s visual selection does not make an independently typed shell command safe.

Use subshell mode and troubleshoot Ctrl+O
Subshell mode lets you temporarily expose a normal shell while keeping the Midnight Commander session available. The manual documents -u (or --nosubshell) to disable concurrent shell support and -U (or --subshell) to enable it when the build supports it. The FAQ identifies bash, tcsh and zsh as the shells that can be used as a subshell.
On a supported build and terminal, Ctrl+O toggles the subshell view. If it appears to do nothing, work through these checks:

- Check how the package was built and whether subshell support was disabled. Running
mc --versionidentifies the installed build, while the distribution package documentation can clarify its compile-time options. - Check the terminal emulator or SSH client. Some terminal programs intercept control or function-key sequences before Midnight Commander receives them.
- Try the alternate Esc-plus-digit sequences supported by your terminal and version, or test a different terminal configuration.
- Start a session explicitly with
mc -uwhen you want to avoid subshell support rather than troubleshoot it. - Use the visible menu and function-key labels for file work even when the toggle is unavailable.
Subshell commands are not sandboxed. They can modify files, stop services or consume resources exactly as commands entered at a normal SSH prompt would, and they inherit the SSH account’s permissions.
Archives, remote locations and background work
The project README documents virtual file systems for archives and remote machines. These features let a panel present a non-local or packaged location in a file-manager-like view, but they do not remove network, permission or format limitations. Authentication failures, unavailable mounts, archive corruption and slow links can all interrupt an operation.
For remote or archive browsing, open the location and inspect a few entries before starting a bulk transfer. Copy a small test file, verify its contents and permissions at the destination, and only then proceed. A background operation can keep the interface usable while a long transfer runs, but it still requires monitoring for errors and sufficient disk space.
Server safety checklist
- Confirm identity: Check the hostname, SSH account and current directory before touching files.
- Confirm both panels: Read the full source and destination paths before every copy or move.
- Limit privileges: Work unprivileged and elevate only the individual command that requires it.
- Stage changes: Use a temporary or backup location before replacing production data.
- Test reversibly: Perform a small transfer before a directory-tree operation or remote/archive copy.
- Watch prompts: Overwrite and recursive-delete confirmations are decisions, not routine progress screens.
- Validate results: Reopen the destination, inspect representative files and check application-specific integrity.
- Protect automation: Keep interactive
mcout of scripts that parse standard output; use purpose-built non-interactive commands for automation. - Remember the shell: Commands entered through the subshell have the same authority and side effects as commands entered directly over SSH.

Exit cleanly
Use the quit action shown in the function-key bar or menu when you are finished. Confirm that pending background operations have completed and that any edited file has been saved deliberately. You should return to the ordinary SSH shell prompt; close the SSH connection only after checking that no required command remains running.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start Midnight Commander in two known directories every time?
Yes. Pass both paths in the command, such as mc /var/log /tmp. The first becomes the active panel and the second the other panel.
Does Midnight Commander require a graphical desktop?
No. It is a text-mode application designed for consoles, terminal emulators and SSH sessions.
Why should I avoid running the whole program with sudo?
The panels and subshell inherit the session’s permissions. Running unprivileged and using sudo only for a specific administrative command reduces the scope of an accidental copy, move, edit or delete.
What should I do if I cannot remember a key binding?
Press F1 for context-sensitive help and use the function-key labels visible at the bottom of the screen. Terminal-specific key handling can differ.
