Greenshot is a lightweight Windows screenshot utility that runs in the notification area, captures a region, window, or full screen, and can then open the result in an editor, save it, copy it, print it, or send it elsewhere.
For a normal Windows 11 installation, download the stable Greenshot 1.3.315 release from the official Greenshot website. The 1.4 builds listed by the project are continuous or unstable builds and are not the best choice for a routine installation.
Which Greenshot version should you download?
The current stable Windows release is Greenshot 1.3.315, released on March 20, 2026. The official download is normally named:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Greenshot-INSTALLER-1.3.315-RELEASE.exe
Greenshot 1.3.315 is the final planned stable release in the 1.3 series. Development has moved to the 1.4 series, but the official version history labels the available 1.4 builds as continuous or unstable. They may also be unsigned, so do not choose one unless you specifically want to test development software.

Use the installer rather than a third-party download page:
- Open the official Greenshot Downloads page.
- Under Latest stable release, select the Windows download.
- When the download finishes, open your browser’s Downloads folder and run the downloaded
.exefile.
The official site links to the project’s GitHub release assets. That site is the appropriate place to verify which release is stable.
Install Greenshot on Windows 11
- Double-click
Greenshot-INSTALLER-1.3.315-RELEASE.exe. - Approve the Windows security prompt if it appears.
- Follow the installation wizard and accept the default options unless you have a reason to change the installation location.
- Finish the wizard.
Greenshot normally does not open a large application window after installation. It starts as a background process and places an icon in the Windows notification area.
To find it, select the small Show hidden icons arrow on the right side of the taskbar. Look for the Greenshot icon, then right-click it to open the program menu.
Greenshot is configured to launch with Windows by default. If you start it manually and see “An instance of Greenshot is already running,” the existing background process is usually the one Windows started. Use its notification-area icon instead of launching another copy.
Installer and portable versions
The installer is the simplest option for most Windows 11 users. It integrates with Windows startup and stores user settings here:
C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingGreenshotGreenshot.ini
Greenshot also provides a portable ZIP distribution through its version-history page. To use it, extract the ZIP and run Greenshot.exe. The portable version stores its configuration in the directory where you extracted it rather than in the normal roaming profile folder.
Choose the portable version if you need to run Greenshot from removable storage or do not want a conventional installation. For a standard personal PC, use the installer.
Configure Greenshot before taking screenshots
Right-click the Greenshot notification-area icon and open its settings. The documented settings areas are:
- General settings — startup and general application behavior.
- Capture settings — hotkeys, pointer capture, delays, and interactive window capture.
- Output settings — destinations, save folders, file names, and image quality.
- Printer settings — behavior when sending screenshots to a printer.
- Plugin settings — installed Greenshot plugin options.
Control startup
In the general settings, Launch Greenshot on startup controls whether the utility starts automatically when Windows starts. Turning this off prevents automatic startup; it does not uninstall Greenshot.

Choose what happens after a capture
The Screenshot destination option determines what Greenshot does immediately after taking a screenshot. Depending on the installed plugins and selected settings, destinations include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Opening the screenshot in the Greenshot image editor.
- Saving it directly to a file.
- Copying it to the clipboard.
- Printing it.
- Sending it by email.
- Using a plugin-provided destination.
Opening the editor is a useful default when you regularly crop, annotate, highlight, or hide information. Direct saving is faster for repetitive work.
Set the save folder and filename
In Output settings, use Preferred output file settings to choose the default directory and filename pattern. The filename pattern is also used when Greenshot proposes a name in a Save As dialog. Select the ? button beside the filename-pattern field to see the placeholders supported by your installed version.
Greenshot keyboard shortcuts
The default capture shortcuts are:
| Action | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Capture region | |
| Capture last region | Shift + Print |
| Capture window | Alt + Print |
| Capture full screen | Ctrl + Print |
Greenshot lets you change these hotkeys in its settings. The old Greenshot help also lists a Ctrl + Shift + Print shortcut for Internet Explorer, but Internet Explorer is not a normal Windows 11 browser workflow and should not be treated as one.
Capture part of the screen
- Press Print.
- Move the crosshair to one corner of the area you want to capture.
- Click and hold the mouse button.
- Drag to the opposite corner.
- Release the mouse button.
Greenshot outlines the selected rectangle in green before applying the capture.
Recommended Free Tools
These controls make region selection more precise:
- Press Space to switch between region mode and window mode.
- Hold Shift to constrain one dimension of the selection.
- Use the arrow keys to move the cursor one pixel at a time.
- Hold Ctrl while using an arrow key to move it by 10 pixels.
- Press Return to apply the selected start and end position.
- Press Z to turn the magnifying glass on or off.
To repeat the previous selection without dragging again, press Shift + Print.
Capture a window
To capture the active window, activate it and press Alt + Print.
You can enable interactive window capture in the capture settings if you want to choose a window after pressing the shortcut rather than immediately capturing the active one. During interactive capture, point at a window and press Page Down to select a child window or control. This can help when you need a browser viewport or embedded control instead of the entire application window.
Capture the entire screen
Press:
Ctrl + Print
Greenshot captures the complete screen. If you use more than one display, check the resulting image and your capture settings to confirm which screen or screen arrangement your version is using.

- Open the context menu.
- Press Print to start region capture.
- Press Space to switch to window mode.
- Select the context menu.
Global hotkeys are also preferable when opening a tray menu would make the active application lose focus.
Edit and annotate a screenshot
If the screenshot destination is set to the editor, Greenshot opens the captured image automatically. You can also open an existing image by right-clicking the notification-area icon and selecting Open image from file, or load an image already copied to the clipboard with Open image from clipboard.
The editor supports annotations, shapes, text, highlighting, obfuscation, cropping, inserted images, and export.

Draw shapes
| Tool | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Rectangle | R |
| Ellipse | E |
| Line | L |
| Arrow | A |
| Freehand line | F |
| Selection tool | Esc |
Hold Shift while drawing to constrain a shape. For lines and arrows, this constrains the angle in 15-degree increments. Hold Ctrl to draw or resize around the object’s geometric center.
Add text
- Choose the text tool or press T.
- Draw a text box on the image.
- Type your text.
- Press Enter when finished.
Use Shift + Enter to insert a line break inside the text box. Double-click an existing text object to edit it.
Highlight or hide information
Press H for the highlight tool. It includes options for highlighting text or an area, grayscale, and magnification.
Press O for the obfuscate tool. Its options include Pixelize and Blur.
Use obfuscation rather than a simple colored rectangle when hiding passwords, account numbers, names, or faces. A rectangle may be removable or may leave the original information recoverable in the image workflow. If blur makes the editor slow, reduce Preview quality or Blur radius, or use pixelization instead.
Crop and export
Crop
- Press C to select the crop tool.
- Draw the area you want to keep.
- Resize the selection if needed.
- Press Enter or select the toolbar’s confirmation button.
Press Esc to cancel. Ctrl + - crops the image to the bounds of existing editor elements. You can also use Edit > Auto-Crop to select the content area after removing a solid-color border.
Save or send the result
| Action | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Save | Ctrl + S |
| Save as | Ctrl + Shift + S |
| Copy image to clipboard | Ctrl + Shift + C |
| Ctrl + P | |
| Ctrl + E |
These commands are also available from the editor’s File menu and toolbar.

Find Greenshot command-line options
Greenshot does not maintain a complete static command-line reference on its FAQ page. Ask the installed executable for the options supported by that build:
"C:pathtoGreenshot.exe" /help
Replace the path with the actual location of Greenshot.exe. You can run the command from Command Prompt or PowerShell after locating the executable.
Fix Print Screen problems on Windows 11
Windows opens Snipping Tool instead
Windows 11 can assign the Print Screen key to its own screen-capture feature. To disable that assignment:
- Open Start.
- Search for
open screen. - Select Use the Print screen key to open screen capture.
- Turn the setting off.
- Restart Greenshot.
OneDrive or Dropbox has taken the key
OneDrive and Dropbox can also register Print Screen. In OneDrive, open its settings and turn off Automatically save screenshot… under Auto save. In Dropbox, disable its screenshot feature. Alternatively, assign Greenshot another shortcut.
Changing Greenshot’s shortcut may not be enough if another application continues to reserve the original key.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe active window loses focus
Opening Greenshot’s notification-area menu can change focus and close a menu in the application you are capturing. Use a Greenshot global keyboard shortcut instead of opening the tray menu when the exact active window or menu state matters.
The editor looks too small on a high-DPI display
Very small editor controls and annotation elements have been reported on high-DPI displays. Greenshot’s Windows Forms technology has limitations with high-DPI support. Windows compatibility scaling may improve the editor’s appearance, but it can also break screen-capture coordinate handling. Treat it as a specific experiment, not a universal fix.
Captures look washed out with HDR
Some Windows 11 HDR configurations, particularly with browsers and HDR displays, have produced washed-out or overexposed captures. This is a graphics-capture edge case rather than a Greenshot setting with a guaranteed fix. As troubleshooting experiments, temporarily disable HDR or restart the display’s HDR state, then test again.

Install 1.3.315 rather than an earlier 1.3 release. This version fixed a security vulnerability in which double-clicking the tray icon opened the latest screenshot folder by launching explorer.exe without an absolute path. In certain circumstances, a malicious executable with that name could be found first.

Do not rely on old pages that describe Greenshot 1.2.10 as the latest version. The official help page still carries that old version label, but the current stable Windows release is 1.3.315. The 1.3.315 installer also removes outdated Greenshot-supplied 1.2 and 1.3 plugin files during installation; this cleanup does not cover unrelated third-party plugins.
FAQ
Is Greenshot free on Windows 11?
Yes. Download it from the official Greenshot website. For normal use, choose the latest stable Windows release rather than an unstable continuous build.
Where does Greenshot save its settings?
The installed version stores its user configuration in C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingGreenshotGreenshot.ini. A portable copy stores its configuration in the folder where you extracted it.
Why does Greenshot say that another instance is already running?
Greenshot normally starts in the background with Windows. Check the notification area, including hidden icons, and use the existing Greenshot process instead of starting another copy.
Why does Print Screen open Snipping Tool instead of Greenshot?
Windows 11 may have the setting Use the Print screen key to open screen capture enabled. Search Start for open screen, disable that option, and restart Greenshot. Also check OneDrive and Dropbox, which can reserve the same key.
Can Greenshot capture a context menu?
Yes. Open the menu, press Print, press Space to switch to window mode, and select the menu before it closes.
How do I blur or pixelate sensitive information?
In the editor, select the obfuscate tool with O, then choose Blur or Pixelize. Obfuscation is more appropriate than merely drawing a shape over passwords or account numbers.
Does Greenshot work as a portable application?
Yes. Download the portable ZIP from the official version-history page, extract it, and run Greenshot.exe. It does not use the normal installed application path.
The Bottom Line
Install Greenshot 1.3.315 from the official Downloads page, then use its notification-area icon or global hotkeys rather than looking for a conventional main window. Set the screenshot destination and save folder first, learn Print for regions, Alt + Print for windows, and Ctrl + Print for the full screen. If Print Screen does nothing, check Windows 11, OneDrive, and Dropbox key assignments before changing Greenshot itself.
