For Classic Era, install an addon only after closing World of Warcraft, extracting the download, and placing the actual addon folder directly in the Classic Era client’s Interface/AddOns directory. The client folder identified in Blizzard forum guidance is _classic_era_, so the usual destination is <WoW installation>/_classic_era_/Interface/AddOns. Relaunch that same client and check its addon menu. If the addon is missing, the first things to check are the client folder and an extra enclosing folder created during extraction.
That process is simple, but “safe” requires realistic expectations. Blizzard’s forum FAQ recommends established addon sources such as WoWInterface and CurseForge and says, “Always download your AddOns from a reputable source.” That recommendation does not certify every file on either site, guarantee that an archive is benign, or provide a security ranking for addon managers. Treat the source, package contents, destination path, and in-game verification as four separate checks.
What a Classic Era addon installation actually changes
An addon is a set of files that the WoW client reads from its Interface/AddOns directory at launch. Classic clients use separate directories, so a package copied into a Retail directory or another Classic client’s directory is not automatically available in Classic Era. The directory name matters as much as the addon files themselves.
For the client identified in the forum guidance, the relevant branch is _classic_era_. A correctly placed addon therefore has a shape like this:

<WoW installation>/_classic_era_/Interface/AddOns/AddonName/The final folder can contain Lua, XML, artwork, and other files supplied by the addon author. The important point is that AddonName is directly under AddOns. If the archive creates an additional package directory, the client may never see the addon.
Older Blizzard forum instructions include legacy path examples. Use them for the extraction and placement principle, not as a reason to copy a path from an old post without checking which client you launch today.
Choose a download source without assuming it is certified
Blizzard’s forum FAQ names WoWInterface and CurseForge as established places to obtain addons. That is source-selection guidance, not a statement that every upload is reviewed, harmless, current, or compatible with your particular Classic client.

- Check that the download is intended for the Classic client you play. “Classic” can refer to more than one client branch, and the destination folder must match the client you actually start.
- Read the package name and release information before downloading. An old addon may still be useful, but it may also be incompatible with the current client or abandoned by its author.
- Keep the original archive until the addon has loaded successfully. It gives you a known package to inspect again if you need to reinstall.
- Do not treat a repository name as a security guarantee. The available Blizzard guidance does not establish formal malware screening, publisher verification, or a comparative security rating for repositories.
If an archive contains something that does not look like an addon package, pause before copying it. The installation guidance describes extracting addon folders into AddOns; it does not say that you should run an installer or executable to make an addon work.

Prepare the correct Classic Era folder
Identify the client you actually launch
Start with the WoW installation used by your Classic Era shortcut or launcher entry. Do not assume that the first WoW folder you find is the right one. The forum reply specifically identifies _classic_era_ for Classic Era and gives a _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns example.
From that client folder, open Interface, then AddOns. If those folders do not exist, create the missing directories with those exact names. The destination should be the client’s own branch, not a similarly named Retail or other Classic branch.
Close the game before changing files
Exit WoW completely before extracting or copying an addon. Installation while the client is running can leave the game with an old view of the directory, and the Blizzard FAQ’s workflow calls for restarting after installation. Closing the game also prevents files from being changed while the client is reading them.

Keep the folder structure visible
File managers often show the archive name as a folder after extraction. Open that folder and look for the actual addon folder or folders. The folder that contains the addon’s manifest and files—not merely the downloaded package’s outer name—belongs directly under AddOns.

Manual installation: a complete step-by-step procedure
- Confirm the client. Identify the WoW installation for Classic Era and locate its
_classic_era_/Interface/AddOnsdirectory. If you play a different WoW client at another time, note that it has a separate addon directory. - Close WoW. Quit the game fully before touching the addon files.
- Download from a recognized repository. Blizzard’s FAQ names WoWInterface and CurseForge. Select the package that corresponds to the Classic client you intend to run, while remembering that neither the FAQ nor the repository names constitute a guarantee that a particular file is safe.
- Extract the archive. Addon downloads are compressed packages. Use your operating system’s archive extraction function and extract to a temporary location where you can inspect the result.
- Inspect the extracted contents. Determine whether the archive contains one addon folder or several. A package may legitimately deliver multiple separate addon folders; each of those folders should be copied, rather than copying an outer wrapper that would add an unwanted directory level.
- Copy the actual addon folders. Place the addon folder or folders directly in the Classic Era client’s
Interface/AddOnsdirectory. Do not put the archive itself there, and do not leave the addon one level deeper inside a package-named folder. - Start Classic Era again. Launch the same client whose directory you edited. Starting another WoW branch will show that branch’s addon directory instead.
- Open the addon list/menu. The Blizzard guidance says to use the addon menu after restarting. Confirm that the addon appears in the list before entering the game world.
- Test the addon’s own function. An entry in the menu proves that the client found the folder; it does not prove that every feature works. Follow the addon author’s in-game instructions, if supplied, and watch for the behavior the addon is intended to provide.
This sequence separates the two most common errors: installing to the wrong client and installing the right files with the wrong folder shape.

The first two layouts explain why a download can appear to be present on disk while remaining absent from the in-game list. A folder visible in AddOns is not enough; the actual addon directory must be at the level the client scans.
How to verify that an addon loaded
Use the addon menu as the first check
After relaunching the intended Classic Era client, inspect its addon list/menu. Blizzard’s forum reply says the menu appears when an addon is properly installed in the correct version folder, while the FAQ recommends restarting and checking the menu. This is the quickest confirmation that the client found at least one addon directory.

- The addon is listed: The client found the folder. Continue with the addon’s documented in-game setup and verify the feature you need.
- The addon list is missing altogether: Check whether any addon folder exists in the
_classic_era_/Interface/AddOnspath for the client you launched. - The list exists but your addon is absent: Check the directory nesting and confirm that you copied the extracted addon folder, not only the archive or its outer wrapper.
- The wrong addons appear: You probably launched a different client branch or pointed an addon manager at another WoW installation. Recheck the branch and the manager’s target.
A menu entry is a path check, not a security endorsement. The presence of an addon on a recognized repository or in the menu does not by itself prove that its files are benign.

Troubleshoot “addons not showing” in the right order
1. No addon menu or list
Begin with the directory, not with the addon’s settings. Confirm that at least one extracted addon folder is under the Classic Era client’s Interface/AddOns path. Then confirm that you launched that same client. The cited forum guidance ties the appearance of the menu to a correctly placed addon.
2. Files are present, but the addon is not listed
Open the folders until you reach the actual addon directory. If the path looks like AddOns/PackageName/AddonName, remove the extra level by moving AddonName directly into AddOns. This is the common extraction mistake illustrated by Blizzard’s FAQ.
3. You installed into Retail or another Classic branch
WoW versions maintain separate addon directories. A package copied into another branch will not necessarily load in Classic Era. Locate the _classic_era_ directory and repeat the extraction and copy steps there, then restart the Classic Era client.

4. You used an addon manager, but it installed elsewhere
Community troubleshooting discussions mention managers such as WoWUp and CurseForge and emphasize targeting the correct game client. Open the manager’s game-installation or client selection settings and verify that it points to the WoW installation containing the _classic_era_ directory. Then use the game’s addon menu as the independent check. The available discussions are community guidance, not current product documentation, and they do not provide a security comparison between managers.

5. Several folders arrived in one download
Some archives contain multiple addon folders. Copy each actual folder into AddOns rather than copying only the package wrapper. After restarting, check whether the expected entries appear in the addon menu.
6. You cannot tell which copy is active
Close every WoW client, identify the installation used by the Classic Era launcher entry, and inspect that installation’s _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns directory. A manager can be configured for a different copy than the one you launch, so verify the target on both sides before reinstalling the addon.
Manual installation versus an addon manager
Both approaches ultimately need the same outcome: extracted addon folders in the correct client directory and a successful check in the in-game addon menu. The evidence available here does not support claiming that one approach is more secure than the other.

Manual installation exposes every file and directory decision, which makes it useful for diagnosing a missing addon. A manager can reduce repetitive copying, but it introduces a separate target-selection step. If the manager points at another WoW installation or client branch, a successful manager download can still produce an absent addon in Classic Era.
Do not choose a manager on the assumption that the cited discussions establish a security ranking. They do not compare the safety of manual installation, WoWUp, CurseForge, or any other manager.
Practical safety checks before and after installation
Before extraction
- Use a recognized addon repository and the addon’s own listing rather than a random mirror.
- Check the intended client/version and avoid copying an old path example without adapting it to the installation you launch.
- Inspect the archive name and contents. The documented workflow calls for addon folders, not a separate executable installer.
- Keep a backup of your existing addon folders before replacing an established setup. This lets you restore a known working state if an update behaves unexpectedly.
During placement
- Work with WoW fully closed.
- Copy only the actual addon folder or folders into
Interface/AddOns. - Watch for an extra enclosing directory introduced by extraction.
- Do not mix files from Retail, another Classic client, and Classic Era in the same troubleshooting step; keeping the branches distinct makes the result easier to verify.
After launch
- Check the addon menu in the intended client.
- Verify the addon’s visible function, not merely the existence of files on disk.
- If it is absent, return to the path and folder-shape checks before downloading a second copy.
- When using a manager, confirm its target again after an update or after adding another WoW installation.
These checks improve reliability without claiming that any repository or manager formally certifies every addon. Stronger claims about release verification, publisher identity, permissions, or malware scanning require current first-party documentation from the relevant platform or addon author.
A repeatable routine for future Classic Era addons
- Write down which WoW client you are about to launch: Classic Era uses the
_classic_era_branch identified in the cited guidance. - Close the game before changing files.
- Obtain the addon from a recognized source and confirm that the package is meant for the client you use.
- Extract the archive outside the game directory so you can inspect whether it contains one folder or several.
- Copy the actual addon folders directly to that client’s
Interface/AddOnsdirectory. - Launch the same client and inspect the addon menu.
- If the addon is missing, check client selection and directory nesting before trying another download or manager.
- If a manager is involved, verify its target installation separately from the in-game check.
Following the routine in this order makes each failure observable: the source is a separate decision, extraction is visible, the destination is explicit, and the game’s addon menu confirms whether the client found the result.
