Use WinGet from PowerShell, Windows Terminal, or Command Prompt to discover, install, and maintain developer software. The reliable pattern is to find the package, confirm its exact identifier and source, install with an exact-match command, preview upgrades with winget upgrade, and then update one package or deliberately run winget upgrade --all. The examples below use Git’s package ID, Git.Git; package IDs and manifests can change, so confirm them on the machine where you are working.
What WinGet is—and what this guide covers
WinGet is Microsoft’s open-source command-line client for discovering, installing, upgrading, removing, and configuring applications on Windows. Microsoft’s overview lists support for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2025. It is a package-management interface, not a guarantee that every package is open source: each application keeps its own license and distribution terms. Check the license of a tool before deploying it in a business or redistribution scenario.
This workflow is suited to a developer who wants repeatable commands rather than downloading installers one by one. It covers package discovery, exact-ID installation, source and agreement handling, targeted and bulk upgrades, package-list export/import, and the common reasons an upgrade is skipped. It does not assert a particular version for any package; versions and manifests change over time.
Prerequisites and a quick availability check
- A supported Windows edition: Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2025, as listed in Microsoft’s WinGet overview.
- Access to PowerShell, Windows Terminal, or Command Prompt.
- Permission to install the selected application. Some installers request elevation even when WinGet itself starts normally.
- A network connection for searching repositories and downloading installers.
Open a shell and run:
winget --versionA version string confirms that the command is available on your PATH. If Windows reports that winget is not recognized, use a supported shell and confirm that WinGet is installed and available for the account. On a managed PC, an administrator may control whether the client or particular sources can be used; follow the organization’s software policy rather than bypassing it.

How WinGet identifies a package
WinGet can search by a human-readable name, but a name may match several records. An exact package identifier is safer because it tells WinGet precisely which record to install. A source is another discriminator when more than one configured catalog contains a matching package.
Search before installing
Start with a broad search:
winget search gitRead the results’ name, identifier, version, and source columns. If the query does not resolve to one application, WinGet displays results that you can refine. Search for a distinctive name, then copy the identifier exactly; do not infer punctuation or capitalization from memory.
Confirm the source
Windows commonly has these default sources:

Use a named source when the search shows duplicates or when your deployment policy requires a particular catalog. Microsoft advises using secure, trusted sources. Adding a third-party source changes what WinGet can discover and install and requires administrator privileges, so do not add one casually.
Install a developer tool by exact ID
Interactive installation of Git
- Search for the tool and verify that the result’s identifier is
Git.Gitand that the source is the one you intend to use. - Run the exact-ID command:
winget install --id Git.Git -e --source winget- Read the source and package agreements shown by WinGet. Accept only terms you have authority to accept.
- Allow the installer to complete, including any installer-specific elevation or setup prompts.
- Open a new shell if the installer changed environment variables, then verify the tool with its own version command, for example:
git --versionThe -e option requests an exact match for the ID. The --source winget option prevents an equally named record in another configured source from becoming the selected package. If the package is unavailable, search again and treat the current result as authoritative; repository records can change.
Install several known IDs in sequence
When you already have verified identifiers, Microsoft documents supplying multiple IDs in one install command. For example:

winget install --id Git.Git Microsoft.VisualStudioCode Microsoft.PowerShell -e --source wingetWinGet processes the packages in sequence. This is convenient for a new workstation, but review every identifier first. The command does not make the applications open source; it only selects package records. Licensing, update behavior, and installer requirements remain application-specific.
What happens when agreements appear
Package and source agreements are separate. A package can require acceptance before installation proceeds, and declining a required agreement stops that installation. In an interactive session, read the text and respond to each prompt. For an intentional, non-interactive script, Microsoft documents --accept-package-agreements for package terms. Source agreements are handled separately; accepting package agreements does not automatically accept source terms. Do not add acceptance switches merely to suppress prompts unless the script owner has reviewed and approved the terms.
Local YAML manifests
If your workflow installs from a local YAML manifest, local-manifest installation must first be enabled by an administrator in WinGet settings. Treat a manifest as executable deployment input: review its package identifiers, installer URLs or references, versions, and requested options before enabling or running it. This requirement is distinct from ordinary installation by package ID.
Verify an installation without assuming a version
WinGet reports whether the install command completed, but a successful package transaction is not the same as a usable developer environment. Verify at the application level:
- Run the tool’s documented version command, such as
git --version. - Start a fresh shell when PATH or other environment variables may have changed.
- Check that the executable resolves to the intended location if multiple installations are possible.
- Run a harmless command that exercises the component you actually need, such as listing Git configuration or printing help.
Do not record a version as a permanent requirement unless your project needs it. WinGet manifests and upstream releases change, and this guide intentionally does not claim a current version for any package.

Preview and apply updates
List everything WinGet can upgrade
First preview the inventory:
winget upgradeWith no package argument, the command lists applications for which WinGet recognizes an available upgrade. Review the name, installed version, available version, and source before changing a development machine. The list reflects what WinGet can identify through its configured catalogs; it is not a promise that every installed application on Windows is represented.
Upgrade one package by ID
For a controlled change, target the exact identifier:
winget upgrade --id Git.Git -eTargeted upgrades are useful when a project requires a known tool to change while other applications remain untouched. If the package is not listed, check the identifier, source, and installed-version detection before trying a different command.
Attempt all available upgrades
To attempt every upgrade WinGet currently recognizes, run:
winget upgrade --allThis command attempts only packages for which WinGet finds an available update. It does not update applications that are absent from the configured sources or whose installed state cannot be matched to a package record.

Unknown installed versions
Some packages have an installed version WinGet cannot identify. Those packages may be omitted from --all. Microsoft documents:
winget upgrade --all --include-unknownUse this option deliberately. When the installed version is unknown, WinGet has less information for deciding whether the update is appropriate, so review the resulting list and installer behavior rather than treating the command as risk-free.
Pinned packages
A package pin can intentionally hold an application at a version or block normal upgrade matching. Pinned packages may be excluded from --all unless the corresponding include-pinned option is used. Inspect your pin policy before forcing an update; a pin may protect compatibility with a project, plugin, or build tool.
Installer-specific upgrade behavior
Upgrade behavior depends on the package and its installer. Microsoft notes that an upgrade can differ in whether the previous version is removed. Read the package’s installer prompts and release notes where available, and keep a rollback or reinstall plan for tools that are part of a production build chain.

Inspect configured sources
winget source listUse this command to see which catalogs are configured and how WinGet names them. A source that has been reset or whose terms changed may present its agreement again. Treat an unexpected source as a configuration change to investigate before installing packages.

Refresh source data
winget source updateUpdating source metadata can resolve stale search results or make a newly published package visible. It does not guarantee that an installer itself is current; package manifests and upstream releases are maintained separately.
Do not add sources as a troubleshooting shortcut
Adding a source requires administrator privileges and broadens the set of software WinGet can discover and install. Establish who operates the source, how packages are validated, how signing and integrity are handled, and how removal works. If you cannot answer those questions, keep the default trusted sources and resolve the package through its existing record.

When you need to rebuild a workstation or share a baseline with a teammate, export the package list instead of maintaining a handwritten command file. The export/import workflow records package identifiers and sources in JSON; optional versions can also be represented. Imports proceed serially, so one failure does not magically make an uninstalled package available to later steps.

winget export -o developer-tools.jsonReview the resulting JSON before committing it to a repository or sharing it. Remove applications that are personal, licensed for one user, or inappropriate for the recipient. Keep the file with the project’s setup documentation and note the Windows edition and date on which it was generated.
Import on another machine
winget import -i developer-tools.jsonWinGet reads the sources and package identifiers from the file and installs them serially. Expect differences when a package has been renamed, removed, moved to another source, or changed its installer. Resolve those entries individually rather than replacing the whole file with broad name searches.
Make exports useful for teams
- Review every package ID and source before distribution.
- Separate mandatory build tools from optional editors, shells, and utilities.
- Document any package that needs an interactive agreement or elevation.
- Use a tested version policy for tools that affect reproducible builds; an export is a package inventory, not a lockfile guaranteeing identical binaries forever.
- Regenerate the file after intentional environment changes and review the diff.
Common problems and precise fixes

Safer scripting patterns
Use interactive commands while learning a package’s behavior. Once the process is understood, scripts should make every important choice explicit:
- Use exact IDs rather than broad names.
- Name the source when multiple sources are configured.
- Preview with
winget upgradebefore introducing--allto a maintenance job. - Handle non-zero exit codes and log which package failed.
- Do not silently accept source or package agreements without prior approval.
- Run bulk updates outside a critical build or release window and test the toolchain afterward.
- Keep exported package lists under change control, with a review date and owner.
For a new machine, a practical sequence is: verify WinGet, inspect sources, search and confirm each ID, install interactively, verify the executables, export the resulting baseline, and schedule updates only after the baseline is known to work.
