Yes—you can uninstall an Xbox game without deleting its saves. The game’s installation files and saved-game data are separate controls. Remove the game from its management menu, leave every save-data deletion option untouched, and make sure any recent progress has synchronized while you are online. When you reinstall and sign in with the same Xbox profile, the title can download its cloud save, provided the game supports cloud saves and the latest progress reached the cloud.
What uninstalling an Xbox game actually removes
An uninstall removes the game’s installed program files, updates and other installation data so that storage can be reclaimed. It is not the same operation as deleting saved data. Xbox exposes save-data management separately, and selecting that control can remove the local copy of your progress even when the cloud copy remains available.

The safest rule is simple: use only the uninstall command when your goal is to remove the installation. Do not choose a command labeled saved data, delete everywhere or similar. Menu wording changes with Xbox dashboard and Windows versions, but the distinction between installation and saves remains.

Before uninstalling: make sure your newest progress is synchronized
Cloud saves are synchronization, not a universal backup guarantee. A connected game may download a cloud copy, upload a newer local copy, do nothing when both copies match, or display a conflict when local and cloud data diverged. If you played offline, the newest changes may exist only on the device until it reconnects.
Pre-uninstall checklist
- Connect the console or PC to the internet and sign in to the Xbox profile that owns the progress.
- Launch the game and wait for its normal save process to finish. If the title shows a synchronization message or progress indicator, let it complete before quitting.
- Do not switch rapidly between two devices while both have unsynchronized progress. Resolve any sync request before making further saves.
- Close the game normally, then begin the uninstall. If you played an entire session offline, keep the game installed until you have reconnected and allowed synchronization to occur.
- If the game has an in-game save menu, make a normal save and return to the title screen before closing. This does not replace Xbox synchronization, but it ensures the game has committed the session locally.
Microsoft’s documented sync flow allows a title to retry a failed connection or continue in offline mode. If the game cannot connect and you choose offline mode, assume that progress remains local until a later online session successfully synchronizes it.
There is no consumer statistic that guarantees a particular percentage of saves will be recovered, and cloud storage should not be treated as an unconditional backup. The practical safeguard is timing: reconnect, let the title finish its sync, and only then remove the installation.

Uninstall and reinstall on an Xbox console
1. Synchronize while connected
Start the game while the console is online and signed in to the profile that played it. Allow the title to finish saving and any Xbox synchronization to complete. The exact indicator differs by game, so do not treat a fast return to the dashboard as proof that every offline change has uploaded.
2. Open the game-management menu
- Open My games & apps.
- Highlight the game you want to remove.
- Open the controller menu for that title and choose its management option.
- Select the command to uninstall the game, then confirm.
Dashboard layouts and labels can vary by console software version. Choose the option that removes the installed game, not one that mentions saved games. If the console offers several items, such as the base game, add-ons and reserved space, read each label before confirming.
If the menu offers a choice between removing only the game and removing the game plus add-ons, either choice concerns installation content. Keep the save-data controls separate. When in doubt, cancel and reopen the menu rather than guessing at a similarly worded command.
3. Leave save-data controls alone
A separate save-data entry may appear in the management screen. Do not select it when you only need storage. Microsoft’s Game Saves documentation explains that deleting console save data through the system interface does not necessarily delete the cloud copy, which can be downloaded at the next launch. However, it removes the local copy and can make recovery difficult if the latest progress never synchronized. Treat every save-data deletion command as potentially destructive.
In other words, the fact that a cloud copy may remain is not a reason to delete the local copy casually. If the console was offline, the local version may be newer than the cloud version. Removing it first can leave you with an older cloud state when you reinstall.

4. Find the game again
On Xbox One, Microsoft Support directs users to My games & apps > Ready to install for owned games that are not currently installed. Select the title, choose install, and wait for the download and updates to finish. You must be signed in with the account that owns the game or has the applicable entitlement.
A Game Pass title can likewise require an active entitlement when you reinstall it. If a subscription or ownership right is not recognized, the install option may be unavailable even though your save remains associated with the account. That is an access issue, not proof that the save has disappeared.
5. Launch while online
Start the reinstalled game with the console connected to Xbox network. The title can download the cloud save associated with your profile. If the game has several editions or profiles, verify that you selected the same title and Xbox account used before uninstalling.

The first launch may take longer while the game checks for updates and synchronizes data. Let that process finish before starting a new game. Starting a fresh profile while an older save is still downloading can make the on-screen state confusing, especially in games that offer several local profiles.
6. Handle a synchronization conflict carefully
If Xbox says that local and cloud saves are different, stop and read the choices. A conflict means both copies changed independently. Compare the timestamps, device descriptions or progress information shown by the prompt and select the copy containing the progress you want to keep. Do not dismiss the prompt blindly or launch another device and save again before resolving it; doing so can make it harder to identify the newest version.
If neither choice is obvious, cancel the launch, identify which device last had the desired progress, and reconnect that device. Avoid creating another save on either device until you have chosen the correct version.
Uninstall and reinstall Xbox or Microsoft Store games on Windows
Use the Xbox PC app or Microsoft Store library
For purchased and Game Pass games managed through Xbox on Windows, use the Xbox PC app’s installed-games controls. Microsoft Store purchases can also be found through Microsoft Store > Library. Removing a game through these supported interfaces uninstalls the program while keeping the process separate from saved-file management.

- Open the Xbox PC app, or open Microsoft Store and select Library.
- Find the installed game in your library.
- Open the title’s menu and choose Uninstall, then confirm.
- To reinstall, return to the same library, select the game and choose Install. Select the target drive when Windows asks.
Do not manually delete folders under WindowsApps, the XboxGames directory or a game’s user-data path unless the game’s own support instructions specifically require it. Microsoft’s developer guidance documents PC save locations and explains that save synchronization logic still applies when files are manipulated outside the normal app workflow. Manual deletion can remove a local save or leave the launcher unable to recognize the installation.

Uninstalling through the app also gives Windows a chance to remove the registered installation cleanly. If you simply delete a folder, the launcher may still report the game as installed, or it may fail to find the files when you try to repair or reinstall.
PC cloud saves depend on the title
Do not assume that every PC game sold through an Xbox or Microsoft Store channel has identical cloud-save behavior. Microsoft’s Game Saves documentation describes a no-code PC cloud-save path that synchronizes before launch and uploads after the title ends or under other defined conditions. That path requires the game to opt in, use the supported configuration and launch as a packaged build. If a particular PC title does not restore progress after reinstalling, check that game’s support information rather than assuming the Xbox service lost a universal backup.
Some PC titles use their own save or account systems in addition to, or instead of, Xbox cloud saves. The safest expectation is conditional: cloud restoration works when the title, distribution format and account configuration support it. A game’s support page is the appropriate place to confirm those details.
Verify the account and edition
A missing save can be caused by signing in with a different Microsoft account, installing a different edition, or launching a title that stores progress in a separate profile. Before troubleshooting files, confirm the account shown in the Xbox app, the game edition and the device on which the original progress was created.
Also check that the title is being launched from the same supported distribution route. A save created by one packaged build may not automatically appear in an unrelated version, even when the names look nearly identical.
How Xbox cloud-save synchronization behaves
The cloud copy is updated through a synchronization process between the game’s local data and the service. The result depends on connectivity, account identity, title support and whether either copy changed.

Microsoft Learn’s Understanding the Game Saves sync flow states: “If the title can’t connect, the user gets an option to retry or resume the title in offline mode.” That choice lets you play, but it does not make offline progress available on another device until a later successful sync.
Synchronization can also occur periodically while a title is running or when it ends, depending on the game’s implementation. Do not force a shutdown immediately after a major checkpoint if the title is still saving or displaying a sync message.

Troubleshooting after an uninstall or reinstall
Your latest session was offline
Do not uninstall immediately. Reconnect the original device, launch the game, and allow it to upload the locally stored changes. If the device was reset, its local data was removed, or the game was deleted before synchronization, the cloud may contain only the last successfully uploaded version.
A sync conflict appears
Read the conflict screen instead of selecting the first button. One option represents the local device and another represents the cloud. Choose the version with the progress you need. If the labels are unclear, cancel the launch, note which device last contained your progress, and avoid making new saves on either device until you can identify the correct copy.
The game is missing from the installed or owned list
On Xbox One, check My games & apps > Ready to install. On Windows, open Microsoft Store’s Library and the Xbox PC app’s library. Confirm that you are using the purchasing account, that the device is compatible and that the game has not been removed from the applicable catalog or subscription. A missing listing is an entitlement or availability issue, not evidence that your save was deleted.

- Confirm that the console or PC is online.
- Confirm that the same Xbox/Microsoft account is signed in.
- Check that you installed the same game edition and region-supported version.
- Quit and relaunch once synchronization has completed; do not create a new save if the game is still displaying a sync prompt.
- For a PC title, verify that the developer supports Xbox cloud saves and that the game is installed through its supported packaged distribution.
You need space immediately but still have unsynchronized progress
Keep the game installed until synchronization finishes. Removing installation files first can leave the only recent copy on a device that is no longer running the title. If storage is critically low, use Windows’ supported uninstall controls or remove another known-safe installation rather than deleting save folders manually.
You played on more than one device
Stop launching both devices until any sync prompt is resolved. The system may ask you to switch devices or choose between divergent copies. Decide which version contains the wanted progress, allow that copy to sync, and only then resume play elsewhere.

Microsoft presents local installation and cloud streaming as different ways to play on Windows. Streaming can avoid waiting for a full download and reduce local storage use, but it depends on the title, plan, device, network and region. A local install generally offers offline access and uses the PC’s hardware directly.

Streaming is not a substitute for synchronizing a save. The title and service still need to support the relevant cloud-save behavior, and you should resolve any existing local/cloud conflict before changing how you play.

Actions that commonly cause avoidable save loss
- Choosing delete saved data when you meant uninstall.
- Removing the game immediately after an offline session.
- Signing into a different account after reinstalling.
- Launching on two devices and saving on both before resolving a conflict.
- Deleting Windows save folders to force a clean reinstall.
- Assuming that every PC title has the same cloud-save implementation.
- Ignoring a synchronization prompt and continuing until one version overwrites the other.
- Starting a new game before the old cloud save has finished downloading.
No special hardware is required for the safe uninstall/reinstall process. An external drive can be useful for managing a larger library, but compatibility and setup requirements vary; it is not necessary to preserve a save when synchronization is working correctly.
