To install the Xbox app on Windows, first search Start for Xbox. Microsoft says the app is pre-installed on most Windows 11 devices. If it is not there, install it through the official Xbox PC app page or Microsoft Store, then open it and sign in with the Microsoft account you want to use for Xbox. You do not need a Game Pass subscription to install or open the app.
What you need before installing
The Xbox app is a Windows application for discovering, downloading, launching and managing compatible games. It also brings together Game Pass browsing, social and chat features, and cloud gaming for supported console games. Availability varies by title, service, device, account and region, so the app should not be treated as a guarantee that every game or feature will appear for every user.
- A Windows PC with access to Start and, if needed, Microsoft Store.
- A Microsoft account for signing in to Xbox.
- Permission to install applications. A work-managed computer may restrict Microsoft Store or other installations.
- A working internet connection for downloading the app and any games you choose later.
A Game Pass plan is optional. Install the app first, then decide whether its current Game Pass catalog and terms make sense for your account and region.

Search Start before downloading
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Xbox in the search box.
- Select the Xbox app if it appears in the results.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming overview, published May 20, 2026, says the Xbox PC app is pre-installed on most Windows 11 devices. “Most” does not mean every PC, so a missing search result is not necessarily an error.

Check the result before choosing an installer
If Start shows an Xbox app, launch it and continue to sign-in. If it shows no Xbox app, use one of the official installation routes below. Avoid downloading an installer from an unofficial mirror; Microsoft directs users to its Xbox and Store routes.
How do I install the Xbox app on Windows?
Option 1: Use the official Xbox PC app page
Open Microsoft’s official Xbox PC app page in your browser and choose the download or installation control presented for your device. Follow the prompts Windows displays. When installation completes, open Start, search for Xbox, and launch the app.
The exact button label can change as Microsoft updates the page or Windows integration. Use the control shown on the current official page rather than relying on an old screenshot or an installer found elsewhere.

Option 2: Install from Microsoft Store
- Open Start and search for Microsoft Store.
- Open Microsoft Store and search for Xbox.
- Open the Xbox app listing.
- Select the Get, Install, or equivalent download control shown for your device.
- Wait for Windows to finish downloading and installing the app.
- Choose Open, or search Start for Xbox after the installation finishes.
Microsoft’s general Store guidance also describes installing apps from My Library. If the Xbox app is associated with the Microsoft account you are using, open Microsoft Store > Library (the label may appear as My Library in some guidance), locate Xbox, and use the available install control.

Which installation route should you use?

Set up the Xbox app after installation
1. Launch Xbox from Start
Open Start, search for Xbox, and select the app. The first launch can take longer than later launches while Windows completes initial setup.
2. Sign in with the intended Microsoft account
When prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account you want connected to Xbox. Account choice matters because your Xbox profile, purchases, subscriptions, friends and family controls are tied to the account that signs in.
If Windows or Microsoft Store is signed in with a different account, verify which account the Xbox app is requesting before accepting prompts. Using the wrong account is a common reason for an unexpected library, missing entitlement or unavailable subscription.

3. Review the app’s library and navigation
After sign-in, browse the app’s game library and discovery areas. The app can be used to find compatible games, download them, launch them and manage installed titles. Social and chat functions are also available through the Xbox experience.

4. Decide whether Game Pass is useful
Game Pass is an optional service choice, not an installation requirement. If you choose to subscribe, review the current plan, catalog, pricing and regional availability shown for your account. Microsoft can change plan names, included games and feature availability, and supported games or cloud gaming access can differ by region and device.
5. Check each title’s availability
A game’s presence in the Xbox app does not mean every access method applies to every user. A title may require a purchase, a particular Game Pass plan, a compatible Windows version or hardware, or a supported region. Cloud gaming applies to supported console games rather than every title in the app.

You do not need Game Pass to install the app
You can install and open Xbox with a Microsoft account without subscribing to Game Pass. The app itself is the entry point for browsing and managing Xbox PC content; Game Pass adds an optional catalog and related benefits where offered.

Game availability, cloud gaming, social features, family controls and subscription benefits can depend on your account, location, age settings, device compatibility and Microsoft’s current service terms. Treat the availability shown in your signed-in app as the applicable result for your setup.

Xbox does not appear in Start
- Search Start again using the exact term Xbox.
- If it is still absent, open the official Xbox PC app page or Microsoft Store and search for Xbox there.
- Use the Microsoft Store library if the app was previously associated with your account.
If the Store itself is missing, continue with the next section rather than installing from an unofficial source.
Microsoft Store is missing
Search Start for Microsoft Store. Microsoft says the Store may not be available when Windows is signed in with a local account instead of a Microsoft account. It may also be disabled on a work-managed device.
- On a personal PC, check whether Windows is using a Microsoft account and sign in if appropriate.
- On a work or school PC, ask the administrator whether Store access is intentionally disabled.
- Do not attempt to bypass organizational restrictions; an administrator may need to approve the installation.
The Store has no install button or blocks the installation
Microsoft identifies several possible causes. Check them in this order:

- Account authorization: confirm that Store and Xbox are using the Microsoft account you intend to use.
- Regional availability: the app, a game or a service feature may not be offered in your current region.
- Family settings: family or age restrictions can prevent an app or game from being installed or displayed.
- Device compatibility: Windows may hide or block an install when the device does not meet the listing’s requirements.
- Pending Windows updates: restart the PC after a recent update, then try the Store installation again.
Store labels and eligibility messages can differ by account and device. Record the exact message if you need to contact Microsoft Support or an administrator.
Microsoft Store behaves incorrectly
Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as a Store troubleshooting step. To run it, open Start, type wsreset.exe, and select the command. Windows may display a blank command window briefly before the Store opens again. Try the Xbox installation after the reset.
Resetting the Store is a troubleshooting action, not a guaranteed fix. If the same error returns, continue checking account, region, family, compatibility and update conditions rather than repeatedly resetting the Store.
The app installs but sign-in or content is wrong
- Sign out and sign back in with the Microsoft account that owns the relevant Xbox profile, purchase or subscription.
- Check that you did not use a local Windows account or a different Microsoft account during Store setup.
- Review family settings if a child or family-managed account cannot see expected content.
- For a missing game or feature, check whether it is supported in your region and on your device.
Nothing resolves the problem
Use Microsoft Support or Xbox Support for the exact error, account and device details. Official support can distinguish a Store problem from an account, regional, family-policy or compatibility restriction. Avoid unofficial installers, modified packages and third-party download sites.
A practical first-session checklist
- Search Start for Xbox before downloading anything.
- If absent, use the official Xbox PC app page or Microsoft Store.
- Confirm the Store account and Xbox account are the ones you intend to use.
- Launch Xbox from Start and complete Microsoft account sign-in.
- Browse the library and verify that the games or services you want are available for your region and device.
- Choose Game Pass only if its current plan and catalog meet your needs; it is optional for app installation.
- If installation fails, check account authorization, region, family settings, compatibility and pending updates.
- Run
wsreset.exeonce as a Microsoft Store troubleshooting step when the Store is malfunctioning. - Contact Microsoft or Xbox Support if the official installation paths still fail.
When the setup is complete
You are finished when Xbox opens from Start, accepts the intended Microsoft account, and displays the library and features available to that account and device. From there, use the app to discover, install, launch and manage compatible games. Subscription, cloud gaming and individual game access remain separate availability decisions inside the app.
