Install the Arlo Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation, model AVD4001) either as a battery-powered doorbell or on an existing low-voltage doorbell circuit. The setup sequence is the same at first: charge the doorbell, add it in the Arlo Secure App with Bluetooth enabled, and connect your phone to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. You can then mount it with the supplied flat plate or angled wedge. Hardwiring requires an 8–24 VAC transformer rated for at least 10 VA, and the circuit must be switched off at the breaker before you touch any conductors.
This guide covers the complete installation, including choosing wireless or wired operation, app onboarding, mounting, charging, electrical checks, and fixes for the most common connection and removal problems.
Identify the doorbell and its requirements
The instructions here apply to Arlo’s Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation), model AVD4001. It has a rechargeable, non-removable battery and can also be connected to an existing doorbell circuit for continuous power support and trickle charging. Initial onboarding is performed in the Arlo Secure App rather than from a web browser.

Choose wireless or hardwired installation
Both methods use the same app setup. Decide where and how you will power the doorbell before drilling or opening the old chime box.
| Consideration | Battery-powered mounting | Hardwired mounting |
|---|---|---|
| Existing wiring | No doorbell circuit required | Requires an 8–24 VAC transformer with a minimum 10 VA rating |
| Electrical work | None beyond mounting | Breaker shutdown, wire removal, reconnection, and an enclosed low-voltage connection |
| Placement flexibility | Can be placed where Wi-Fi is usable, even without a previous doorbell | Placement is constrained by the existing cable run unless new wiring is installed |
| Charging | Remove the doorbell and charge it indoors when needed | The circuit can trickle-charge the battery, but the battery remains part of the operating system and runtime still varies |
| Best fit | Renters, new locations, or installations where battery access is preferable | Homes with a suitable circuit and owners who want ongoing power support |
If you cannot identify the transformer rating or the two low-voltage conductors, stop and use a qualified electrician. Do not assume that a similarly shaped adapter or an unverified doorbell transformer is compatible.

Arlo’s manual describes the free Arlo Secure App as the tool that completes setup and guides installation. It specifically requires the phone to be on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network with Bluetooth enabled. If your phone automatically prefers a 5 GHz network under one combined network name, temporarily connect it to the router’s 2.4 GHz band or use the router’s band-selection controls.
Mount the doorbell wirelessly
1. Test the final position first
Carry the paired doorbell to the proposed location and use the app’s placement flow. Check the live image from the normal standing and walking approach. Confirm that the view is not blocked by a door frame, wall return, roof edge, decoration, or nearby light that could obscure the scene.
2. Select the mounting plate
Use the flat plate when the camera should face straight out. Use the angled wedge when the camera needs to point left or right toward the walkway. The wedge sits between the wall and the flat plate, so position it before marking the holes.

- Hold the selected plate or wedge at the tested location.
- Mark each mounting hole through the supplied hardware.
- Drill suitable pilot holes when the wall material calls for them. Use anchors appropriate for that material rather than forcing a screw into unsupported plasterboard or masonry.
- Keep the plate level and make sure the screws will not strike hidden plumbing or electrical wiring.
4. Secure and attach
Fasten the plate with the supplied screws, then click the doorbell onto the plate until it is seated. Complete the app’s placement check before final tightening so that you can correct the angle without repeatedly removing the unit.

5. Confirm the wireless result
Open the live view at the final position and trigger a test motion or doorbell press. A usable image at the door does not guarantee that every location in the home has the same signal; evaluate the connection where the doorbell is mounted, not beside the router.
Install it on an existing doorbell circuit
Hardwiring is a low-voltage task, but the transformer is connected to mains power. Treat the circuit as energized until the breaker is off and the old chime has been checked.
Electrical requirements and safety
- The transformer must provide 8–24 VAC and be rated for at least 10 VA.
- Turn off the correct breaker before removing the old doorbell or handling its wires.
- Press the old doorbell after switching off the breaker. The chime should remain silent; if it rings, the wrong breaker is off or the circuit has another supply.
- If the transformer label is missing, the voltage is outside the range, or the wiring is unfamiliar, have a qualified electrician inspect it.
1. Complete app onboarding first
Pair the doorbell in the Arlo Secure App while it is accessible. When the app asks how it will be powered, select Wired. This lets the app apply the appropriate installation flow before you work at the wall.
2. Isolate the circuit
- Switch off the breaker that supplies the doorbell transformer.
- Press the old doorbell to verify that the chime does not sound.
- Remove the old button and expose the two low-voltage conductors.
3. Connect the two wires
Connect the two doorbell conductors to the Arlo doorbell terminals according to the Arlo wiring guide and the labels on the device. Low-voltage doorbell connections normally use two conductors, but do not rely on wire color alone. Keep the conductors firmly secured, avoid bare copper that could touch the other terminal, and enclose the connection behind the mounted unit.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Mount the wired doorbell
Use the flat plate or angled wedge as you would for a wireless installation. Route the wires without pinching them between the plate and wall, fasten the plate, and click the doorbell into place. Do not restore power while the wiring is loose or exposed.
5. Restore and test power
- After the doorbell is secure and the connections are enclosed, turn the breaker back on.
- Wait for the doorbell to start and open live view in the app.
- Press the doorbell and verify the expected notification or chime behavior for your installation.
- If the device remains off, switch the breaker off again before inspecting anything.
Hardwiring supplies ongoing power support and can trickle-charge the internal battery. It does not turn the battery into a removable or guaranteed unlimited power source, and actual runtime remains dependent on recording activity, settings, temperature, and local conditions.
Check Wi-Fi at the mounted location
The AVD4001 uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Arlo lists up to 300 ft (91 m) of wireless range in line-of-sight conditions, measured by Arlo in 2026; a real home usually has walls, floors, metal, glass, and interference that reduce that distance.
Signs the location is marginal
- The app finds the doorbell during setup but live view takes a long time to load.
- Video repeatedly disconnects after the doorbell is moved to the wall.
- Notifications arrive late or fail when the doorbell is pressed.
- The device works near the router but not at the entrance.
Ways to improve coverage
- Move the router or a 2.4 GHz access point closer to the entrance if practical.
- Use a mesh node or extender positioned between the router and the doorbell, not in a location that already has a weak backhaul signal.
- Retest live view after each location change. The relevant measurement is the signal at the mounted doorbell.
- If the signal is still unreliable, choose a different mounting position that preserves the required view while shortening the wireless path.
Remove the doorbell and recharge it
The battery is non-removable, so charge the entire doorbell indoors. Do not pry against the housing or twist the unit off the plate.

- Insert the supplied release pin into the release pinhole at the top of the mount.
- Press the pin to release the latch.
- Lift the doorbell away from the mounting plate.
- Connect the supplied charging cable indoors and allow the battery to charge before reinstalling it.
- Click the doorbell back onto the plate and confirm live view after reattachment.
For a hardwired installation, turn off the breaker before attempting to remove the unit if the wiring will be disturbed. If you only need to release the doorbell from its plate and the wires remain undisturbed, still avoid pulling on the connected conductors.
Battery life and ongoing maintenance
There is no single runtime figure that applies to every AVD4001 installation. Frequent motion recordings, a busy entrance, high or low temperatures, selected settings, Wi-Fi retries, and other local conditions can all increase battery use. Treat any runtime estimate from another home as an example rather than a guarantee.
- Inspect the app periodically for a low-battery indication.
- Charge before the battery is fully depleted so the doorbell is not left offline.
- Review placement if the camera records constant motion from a busy road, tree, or reflective surface.
- Keep the lens and the area immediately around the doorbell clear of dirt, cobwebs, and objects that could trigger unnecessary recordings.
- After severe weather or a service visit, confirm that the doorbell is still fully clicked into the plate and that live view works.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
The doorbell is not found during setup
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the phone or tablet.
- Confirm the phone is connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, not only a 5 GHz band.
- Charge the doorbell and keep it close to the phone during pairing.
- Press and hold the pairing button for the full three seconds, then wait for the blue flashing LED.
- Return to + → Add a Device → Doorbells & Chimes → Video Doorbell 2nd Generation and retry.
The connection is weak at the final location
Pairing beside the router does not prove that the entrance has adequate coverage. Move the router or add 2.4 GHz mesh or extender coverage, then run the app’s placement check again. If the signal remains marginal, use a nearby mounting position with a shorter or less obstructed path.

Switch the breaker off again before touching anything. Check that the old chime was silent when the breaker was tested, verify the transformer is within 8–24 VAC and at least 10 VA, and have the connections inspected by a qualified electrician if the voltage or wiring cannot be confirmed. Never troubleshoot exposed conductors while the circuit is energized.
The doorbell will not release from the mount
Insert the supplied release pin into the release pinhole at the top of the mount and press the latch before lifting the unit away. Prying against the housing can damage the doorbell or plate.
The live view works indoors but not after mounting
Check the final 2.4 GHz signal, not the temporary setup position. Also verify that the doorbell clicked fully onto the plate and that the wedge or plate did not move while the screws were tightened. Re-run the placement flow after correcting the physical position.
