The reliable approach is to let Ansible configure Docker from Docker’s own package repository, enable the service, verify it with hello-world, and then use the community.docker collection to manage containers. The playbook must branch for apt-based and dnf-based systems, install the Docker SDK in the Python environment used on each target, and account for firewall behavior before publishing ports.

What this Ansible setup does

A complete setup has four layers. First, Ansible checks that each server runs a supported Linux distribution and architecture. Second, it removes conflicting distribution packages, installs Docker’s repository key and repository definition, and installs the Engine packages. Third, it enables and starts the Docker service and runs a disposable verification container. Finally, it installs the Ansible collection and Python SDK needed to create and update containers declaratively.

Docker’s Linux support matrix changes over time and architecture support differs by distribution. Validate the target before rollout rather than assuming that every Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, RHEL or CentOS derivative is supported. Docker’s current Debian documentation lists Debian Trixie 13 and Bookworm 12, while its RHEL documentation lists maintained RHEL 8, 9 and 10. A derivative may require the codename of its upstream base distribution, and an unsupported architecture can fail even when the distribution name appears valid.

Prerequisites and design decisions

Controller and target requirements

  • Ansible must be installed on the controller, with SSH access to every server.
  • The remote account needs privilege escalation, normally through become: true, to install packages, write repository files and control system services.
  • Each target needs a working Python interpreter. Set ansible_python_interpreter explicitly when the system default is not the interpreter you intend to use.
  • Outbound access to the distribution mirrors and Docker’s repository is required during installation unless you operate an internal mirror.
  • Record the distribution release, architecture and package versions in inventory or host facts so a later run does not silently target a different platform.

Repository versus distribution packages

The distribution may offer packages named docker.io or similar, but the workflow below uses Docker’s official repository and installs docker-ce, docker-ce-cli, containerd.io, docker-buildx-plugin and docker-compose-plugin. Repository installation is the documented path for ongoing Docker installation and update workflows. Distribution packages can have different release timing, package names and feature sets, so do not mix packages from both sources on one host.

Decision Choice used here Operational effect
Distribution family apt for Debian and Ubuntu; dnf for RHEL-family systems Repository syntax, cache refresh and package task differ by family.
Package source Docker’s official repository Provides the Docker CE package set and a documented upgrade path.
Version policy Latest repository version by default, or explicit pins for controlled releases Unpinned installs receive updates when package metadata changes; pins improve reproducibility but require planned maintenance.
Module execution Docker SDK installed in the target interpreter used by container modules Changing the controller’s Python alone does not satisfy modules that execute on the server.
Network exposure Firewall reviewed before publishing ports Docker-published ports can bypass ordinary ufw or firewalld expectations.

Prepare inventory and variables

Keep operating-system differences in group variables instead of embedding assumptions in every task. A minimal inventory might look like this:

[docker_debian]
debian-01 ansible_host=192.0.2.21 ansible_user=admin

[docker_rhel]
rhel-01 ansible_host=192.0.2.31 ansible_user=admin

[docker:children]
docker_debian
docker_rhel

Use host or group variables to select the Python interpreter and, when required, the exact package versions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ansible_python_interpreter: /usr/bin/python3
docker_package_state: present
# Set these only when you have tested the exact versions:
# docker_ce_version: 5:27.5.1-1~debian.12~bookworm
# docker_cli_version: 5:27.5.1-1~debian.12~bookworm

Do not copy an example version string to a different release. Package-version syntax is distribution-specific and repository metadata may no longer contain an old build. If you pin versions, check availability first and schedule a deliberate unpin or upgrade process.

Install Docker Engine on Debian or Ubuntu

The following playbook follows the apt repository pattern: remove conflicting packages, install prerequisite apt tooling, create Docker’s keyring directory, install the signing key with restrictive permissions, add a repository entry for the detected release and architecture, refresh metadata, install the Engine package set, and start the service.

1. Remove packages that can conflict

Package names vary by release. Remove only packages that are present and known to conflict in your environment; do not purge application data unintentionally.

- name: Remove conflicting Docker packages
  ansible.builtin.apt:
    name:
      - docker.io
      - docker-doc
      - docker-compose
      - podman-docker
      - containerd
      - runc
    state: absent
    purge: false
    update_cache: true
  become: true

If your servers depend on a distribution-managed containerd or runc, stop and map that dependency before removing it. Docker’s package set supplies containerd.io; running two providers for the same runtime can create upgrade and service conflicts.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Install apt prerequisites and create the keyring

- name: Install apt prerequisites
  ansible.builtin.apt:
    name:
      - ca-certificates
      - curl
    state: present
    update_cache: true
  become: true

- name: Create Docker keyring directory
  ansible.builtin.file:
    path: /etc/apt/keyrings
    state: directory
    mode: '0755'
  become: true

- name: Download Docker repository signing key
  ansible.builtin.get_url:
    url: https://download.docker.com/linux/{{ ansible_distribution | lower }}/gpg
    dest: /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
    mode: '0644'
    owner: root
    group: root
  become: true

The keyring path is /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc. Restricting ownership and mode prevents an accidental writable trust store. If your security standard requires a different mode, apply it consistently and test apt’s ability to read the key.

3. Add an architecture-aware repository

Docker repository architecture names are not always identical to Ansible’s fact names. Map them explicitly and fail early for an unknown value.

      {{ ansible_distribution_release }} stable
    filename: docker
    state: present
    update_cache: true
  become: true

Use the upstream codename when a derivative does not publish a matching Docker repository. Confirm that choice against Docker’s current support page before applying it broadly. A wrong codename usually appears as an apt metadata error or an empty package candidate.

4. Install Docker and enable the service

- name: Install Docker Engine and plugins
  ansible.builtin.apt:
    name:
      - docker-ce
      - docker-ce-cli
      - containerd.io
      - docker-buildx-plugin

    update_cache: true
  become: true

- name: Enable and start Docker
  ansible.builtin.service:
    name: docker
    enabled: true
    state: started
  become: true

For a pinned installation, replace present with exact package specifications that exist in the repository, or define separate version variables and construct the package list. Test the resulting transaction in a staging group first because pinning one Docker package while leaving its runtime dependencies unpinned can produce dependency conflicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Verify the daemon

- name: Run Docker hello-world verification
  ansible.builtin.command: docker run --rm hello-world
  register: docker_hello_world
  changed_when: true
  become: true

- name: Show verification output
  ansible.builtin.debug:
    var: docker_hello_world.stdout

The hello-world command downloads a small test image if necessary, creates and runs a container, prints a confirmation message, and exits. The --rm option removes the stopped test container. A successful task proves that the client can reach the daemon, the daemon can obtain an image, and the runtime can start a container; it is not a production workload test.

Install Docker Engine on RHEL-family servers

RHEL-family systems use Docker’s RPM repository and dnf. The current Docker RHEL manual lists RHEL 8, 9 and 10 as maintained releases. Confirm entitlement, repository reachability and architecture before running the playbook.

1. Remove conflicting packages and install dnf tooling

- name: Remove conflicting container packages
  ansible.builtin.dnf:
    name:
      - podman
      - podman-docker
      - docker
      - docker-client
      - docker-common
      - docker-engine
      - runc
    state: absent
  become: true

- name: Install repository prerequisites
  ansible.builtin.dnf:
    name:
      - dnf-plugins-core
      - ca-certificates
      - curl
    state: present
  become: true

Do not remove Podman from a host that still serves Podman workloads without an approved migration. The list is a starting point; inspect installed packages and service dependencies in your image build process.

2. Add the Docker RPM repository

- name: Add Docker RPM repository
  ansible.builtin.get_url:
    url: https://download.docker.com/linux/rhel/docker-ce.repo
    dest: /etc/yum.repos.d/docker-ce.repo
    owner: root
    group: root
    mode: '0644'
  become: true

- name: Refresh dnf metadata
  ansible.builtin.dnf:
    update_cache: true
  become: true

For a RHEL derivative, verify that the repository path and release are supported rather than substituting the derivative name automatically. Keep repository definitions in a managed file so a later Ansible run can correct manual edits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Install and start Docker

- name: Install Docker Engine and plugins
  ansible.builtin.dnf:
    name:
      - docker-ce
      - docker-ce-cli
      - containerd.io
      - docker-buildx-plugin
      - docker-compose-plugin
    state: present
  become: true

- name: Enable and start Docker
  ansible.builtin.systemd:
    name: docker
    enabled: true
    state: started
    daemon_reload: true
  become: true

- name: Verify Docker with hello-world
  ansible.builtin.command: docker run --rm hello-world
  register: docker_hello_world
  changed_when: true
  become: true

If dnf reports a dependency conflict, inspect enabled repositories and installed runtime packages before forcing an erase. Mixing an older vendor runtime with containerd.io is a common cause of failed transactions.

Run the playbook safely

Place the Debian and RHEL tasks in separate files and include them according to gathered facts, or use separate plays with host groups. A simple top-level play can select the branch:

ansible-playbook --syntax-check -i inventory docker-install.yml
ansible-playbook --check --diff -i inventory docker-install.yml
ansible-playbook -i inventory docker-install.yml

Some package and command operations cannot predict every change in check mode. Treat check mode as a review aid, not proof that a repository or service will work. Run the real play against a disposable server first, then promote the same variables and repository policy to production.

Install the Ansible Docker collection and Python SDK

Installing Docker itself does not install Ansible’s Docker modules. The collection is separate from ansible-core. Current collection documentation identifies version 5.4.0 and requires ansible-core 2.17.0 or newer. Install it on the controller or in the execution environment that runs your playbooks:

ansible-galaxy collection install community.docker

For reproducible automation, pin the collection in collections/requirements.yml and install it during environment creation:

collections:
  - name: community.docker
    version: 5.4.0

Most community.docker modules require the Docker SDK for Python on the machine where the module executes. With normal modules, that is the target server. Install the SDK into the interpreter selected by ansible_python_interpreter:

- name: Install Docker SDK for the Ansible target interpreter
  ansible.builtin.package:
    name: python3-docker
    state: present
  become: true

Package names differ by distribution. If the distribution does not provide a suitable SDK package, create a controlled virtual environment and set ansible_python_interpreter to that environment’s Python, then install the SDK there. Do not install it into an unrelated controller virtual environment and assume remote modules can import it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plugins execute in Ansible’s own context, so their dependency requirements can differ from module requirements. Keep the controller or execution image’s collection and Python dependencies versioned together.

Manage a container with Ansible

Use the fully qualified module name community.docker.docker_container. It is declarative and supports check mode, allowing Ansible to compare the requested state with the current container configuration. Docker API 1.25 or newer is required.

For a multi-container application, use the collection’s Compose v2 modules instead of reproducing a network of containers as unrelated tasks. Keep the Compose file under version control, pass explicit project names, and decide how image pulls and volume ownership are handled during an update.

Verify the installation after Ansible finishes

Run these checks on each target or expose equivalent assertions in the playbook:

systemctl is-enabled docker
systemctl is-active docker
docker version
docker info
docker run --rm hello-world
ansible localhost -m community.docker.docker_container_info -a 'name=web' -c local
  • Service enabled: Docker starts during boot.
  • Service active: the daemon is currently running.
  • Docker version: the client can communicate with the daemon and reports the installed release.
  • Docker info: storage driver, runtime and daemon configuration are readable.
  • Hello-world: image retrieval and a basic container lifecycle work.
  • Container information: the Ansible collection, target SDK and Docker API connection work together.

If the verification command runs as root but your application tasks run as an unprivileged user, test both contexts. Access to the Docker socket is effectively administrative access on the host; adding a user to the docker group should be treated as a privileged security decision, not merely a convenience setting.

Firewall and exposure considerations

Docker warns that published container ports can bypass rules normally expected from ufw or firewalld. Before adding published_ports, document which addresses and networks should reach the service. Do not assume that a deny rule in a front-end firewall automatically blocks traffic DNATed by Docker.

Use the firewall mechanism supported for your host and place filtering rules in the appropriate iptables or ip6tables path. The DOCKER-USER chain is the supported location for rules that should be evaluated before Docker’s own forwarding rules. Test both IPv4 and IPv6 if the daemon enables both, and verify behavior from an external host rather than only from localhost.

  • Bind development services to 127.0.0.1 or an internal address when they do not need public access.
  • Allow only required source networks and destination ports.
  • Keep host firewall configuration in Ansible so a Docker package update cannot erase your intended policy.
  • Review cloud security groups or equivalent upstream controls alongside host rules.

Make the playbook idempotent and maintainable

Use repeatable state

Repository files, keyring mode, package state, service state, collection requirements and container definitions should all be safe to apply repeatedly. Prefer Ansible modules over shell commands so changes are detected from state rather than command output. When a command is unavoidable, add a meaningful changed_when condition or a check that prevents unnecessary execution.

Separate installation from workload deployment

Keep the Docker host role independent from application roles. The host role should install and verify the daemon, while application roles create networks, volumes, secrets and containers. This separation lets you upgrade Docker without unexpectedly redeploying every workload.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Choose a version strategy

Using state: present follows the repository’s current candidate and is convenient for routine updates. Pin package versions and collection versions when you need identical builds across environments, regulated change control or a reproducible rollback. Pinning creates an obligation to monitor repository retention, security advisories and dependency compatibility; it is not a substitute for an upgrade schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control images and data

Use immutable image digests for high-assurance deployments when your registry workflow supports them. Tags such as stable are easier to maintain but can change over time. Store persistent data in explicitly named volumes or host paths, back it up independently of containers, and never treat container deletion as data deletion protection.

Troubleshooting common failures

Repository metadata cannot be downloaded

  • Confirm DNS, proxy and outbound HTTPS access from the target.
  • Check that the distribution name and codename match a repository that Docker currently publishes.
  • Verify /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc exists, is readable by apt and is referenced by the repository entry.
  • On RHEL, inspect enabled repositories and entitlement status before changing the Docker repository file.

No installation candidate for a Docker package

An unsupported release, architecture mismatch or stale package cache is more likely than a missing package name. Print ansible_distribution, ansible_distribution_release, ansible_architecture and the repository file, then compare them with Docker’s current support matrix. Do not substitute a package from a different distribution family.

The daemon fails to start

Inspect the service and journal:

systemctl status docker --no-pager
journalctl -u docker -b --no-pager

Look for a conflicting runtime, invalid daemon configuration, storage-driver issue or a port already in use. If a previous package provider installed a different runtime, remove the conflict through the package manager and reinstall the matching Docker package set rather than copying binaries manually.

Ansible cannot import the Docker SDK

Check the interpreter Ansible selected and import the SDK with that exact binary:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ansible target -m ansible.builtin.setup -a 'filter=ansible_python*'
ansible target -m ansible.builtin.command -a '/usr/bin/python3 -c "import docker; print(docker.__version__)"'

Replace /usr/bin/python3 with the configured interpreter. Install the SDK into that environment, not only into the controller. If a module runs in an execution environment, install the dependency in that image as well.

The container module cannot connect

  • Confirm the Docker service is active.
  • Check the socket path and permissions used by the module.
  • Ensure the target API is Docker API 1.25 or newer.
  • Verify that the collection is installed in the same execution environment as the playbook.
  • Run the module in check mode and inspect the diff before changing a live container.

Published ports remain reachable despite firewall rules

Review Docker’s forwarding rules and your filtering rules in the DOCKER-USER chain. Check both protocol families and test from the actual client network. A host-level rule placed in the wrong chain may never see traffic after Docker performs address translation.

Operational checklist

  • Validate distribution release and architecture against Docker’s current support matrix.
  • Use one package source and remove only verified conflicts.
  • Protect the apt keyring or RPM repository file with root ownership and repeatable permissions.
  • Install all five required packages: docker-ce, docker-ce-cli, containerd.io, docker-buildx-plugin and docker-compose-plugin.
  • Enable and start Docker through Ansible’s service module.
  • Run docker run --rm hello-world and retain the output in automation logs.
  • Install community.docker separately from ansible-core; current collection documentation requires ansible-core 2.17.0 or newer.
  • Install the Docker SDK in the Python interpreter used by target-side modules.
  • Use community.docker.docker_container for individual containers and Compose v2 modules for multi-container applications.
  • Review firewall behavior before publishing any port and enforce policy in the supported filtering chain.
  • Pin versions when reproducibility matters, then schedule tested upgrades.
