A rolling-release Linux distribution is installed once and then kept current with regular package updates. The safe way to adopt one is not to treat every distribution as interchangeable: choose a distribution whose installer and administration model fit you, verify its installation image, protect your data, follow its current installer documentation, and configure updates and recovery before making it your primary system.

This guide uses Arch Linux, openSUSE Tumbleweed and EndeavourOS as examples. Commands, snapshot tools and recovery procedures are distribution-specific; a command shown for one system should not be copied to another without checking that system’s documentation.

What “rolling release” means

In a rolling-release model, the installed system receives continuing software upgrades instead of being replaced by a sequence of fixed-version releases. Arch describes this as “one-time installation and perpetual software upgrades.” You normally install the system once, then update packages from its repositories as new versions become available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rolling release does not mean that an installer image is a permanent update mechanism. Arch’s download image is intended for new installations; an existing Arch installation is updated with pacman -Syu. Installation media can contain an older package set than the repositories you reach after booting, so update the installed system using the distribution’s supported workflow.

Continuous updates bring current kernels, drivers, libraries and applications, but they also make disciplined maintenance important. Read update notices when your distribution provides them, keep a recovery path, and avoid mixing commands or repositories from unrelated distributions.

Choose the distribution and installation path first

There is no universal best rolling-release distribution. Select one by matching its installer, defaults and maintenance model to your hardware and experience.

Distribution Installation and administration character Update workflow Recovery considerations
Arch Linux Most system configuration is performed from the shell. You assemble the system and choose the desktop, services and filesystem layout yourself. pacman -Syu updates an existing installation. Arch describes a rolling model with one-time installation and perpetual upgrades. Use Arch’s current installation and recovery documentation. Do not assume another distribution’s snapshot or rollback commands apply.
openSUSE Tumbleweed Documentation provides an introductory path for new users and shorter pointers for experienced users. The installer offers several image choices and guided configuration. sudo zypper dup performs a distribution upgrade. Repository changes can add or remove packages. Tumbleweed documents booting a read-only filesystem snapshot from GRUB and then running sudo snapper rollback in the documented Btrfs setup.
EndeavourOS Discovery documentation groups installation media, hardware, package management and recovery information. The system follows the Arch package ecosystem. Use the Pacman workflow described by EndeavourOS and its current guidance. Its documentation covers Timeshift snapshots and arch-chroot recovery for bootloader or update failures; snapshots are not automatically present on every installation.

Use these practical decision axes:

  • Installer guidance: decide whether you want a highly guided installation or are comfortable making more choices from a shell.
  • Terminal administration: consider how willing you are to read package-manager output, edit configuration files and repair a boot process.
  • Desktop and defaults: determine whether you want a preselected desktop and services or a minimal base on which to build.
  • Update behavior: learn the exact package manager and whether updates are incremental, transactional or delivered in tested batches.
  • Rollback design: decide whether you will configure filesystem snapshots, a separate backup, both, or neither. A snapshot is not automatically a backup.
  • Hardware and boot needs: account for firmware mode, proprietary firmware, disk encryption, Secure Boot requirements and dual-boot constraints before choosing a layout.

Arch’s About page reports more than 49,000 build scripts in the Arch User Repository (page copyright year shown as 2026). That figure describes available build scripts, not a guarantee that every package is maintained, secure or suitable for your machine, and it is not a controlled comparison with another distribution.

Decide what the installation will change

Before downloading an image, classify the installation. A temporary test in a virtual machine has different risks from replacing the operating system on your only laptop.

Test installation

A virtual machine or spare disk lets you learn the installer and update process without changing the computer’s production system. You still need enough memory and storage for the guest and should practice creating a recovery medium, but a mistake is less likely to destroy personal files.

Replacement installation

A replacement erases or repartitions the target disk. Identify the exact disk by model and capacity, export files you need, and verify that your backup can actually be opened from another device before proceeding.

Dual boot

Dual boot requires free space, a compatible firmware mode and an understanding of the existing system’s boot entries. Record the current partition layout and recovery method. Do not shrink or delete a partition merely because its label is unfamiliar; manufacturer, recovery and encrypted partitions can be essential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arch’s installation guidance explicitly says to back up data and warns that mistakes can destroy it. An independent backup on another disk or storage service is optional equipment, but the backup itself is not optional if the data matters.

Download an image from the official distribution route

Use the distribution’s official download page or documentation, not an unverified mirror link copied from a forum. Check the release notes and installation guide immediately before downloading because image contents, installer screens and supported hardware can change.

Understand the openSUSE image choices

openSUSE documents three broad choices: Live images of approximately 950 MB, DVD images of approximately 4.5 GB and a Network installer of approximately 150 MB. These are page figures that can change, so confirm the current sizes before starting a download.

  • Live image: boots a usable desktop and can be convenient for testing hardware. The documentation says Live images undergo fewer tests than DVD images, while describing them as reasonably safe for most users.
  • DVD image: is much larger and includes more installation content locally, which can reduce dependence on a network during setup.
  • Network installer: is small, but it needs a reliable connection to retrieve packages during installation.

Arch provides ISO checksums and a PGP signature and instructs users to compare the checksum and verify the signature. Treat both checks as separate: a checksum can show that a file matches a published digest, while a signature helps establish that the digest itself came from the distribution’s signing key.

Verify the installation media before booting

Verification is a short step that prevents hours of troubleshooting a corrupt or altered image.

  1. Download the ISO, checksum data and signature from the distribution’s official route.
  2. Compare the downloaded file’s checksum with the published value using the operating system’s checksum utility. A single changed character means the file is not the expected image; download it again rather than writing it to USB.
  3. For distributions that publish PGP signatures, import or otherwise use the documented signing key, verify the signature and check the key fingerprint through the distribution’s stated trust process.
  4. Keep the verified ISO and the recorded checksum until the installation and first update succeed.

openSUSE also documents authenticity and integrity checks for its images. Follow its current commands rather than substituting a command copied from an Arch guide. Do not skip verification because the download completed without a browser error; a complete transfer can still be corrupt or replaced.

Write the verified image to a USB drive

You need a USB flash drive suitable for the image and a computer on which you can write it. Writing an ISO to a USB drive normally replaces the drive’s existing contents, so copy anything on that drive elsewhere first.

  1. Insert the USB drive and identify it by its device name, capacity and model. On a machine with multiple removable drives, unplug unrelated drives to reduce the chance of selecting the wrong target.
  2. Use the distribution’s documented USB-writing method for your current operating system. Arch explicitly supports direct USB writing, and openSUSE documents USB preparation.
  3. Confirm the target device one more time before starting. A raw image write is not the same as copying the ISO as an ordinary file into a folder on the USB.
  4. Eject the drive cleanly after the write completes, then leave it connected for the reboot.

Firmware boot menus vary by manufacturer and model, so do not rely on one universal function key. Open the machine’s documented boot-device menu, select the USB device and choose the same firmware mode you intend to use for the installed system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Work through the installer deliberately

Use the selected distribution’s current installation guide in the order it presents. The correct choices depend on firmware, encryption, dual boot, filesystem and hardware; no single partition table is mandatory for every rolling-release installation.

Firmware and boot mode

Determine whether the computer is using UEFI or legacy BIOS before creating partitions. For a UEFI installation, the installer normally needs an EFI System Partition; a legacy installation uses a different boot arrangement. Keep the installed system and any existing operating system in a consistent mode when dual booting.

Disk and filesystem layout

Choose the target disk by its confirmed model and capacity. A simple single-disk installation can use the installer’s guided layout. Manual partitioning is appropriate when you need separate data, an existing operating system, a specific filesystem or encryption, but it increases the consequences of an incorrect selection.

Btrfs can support filesystem snapshots, but choosing Btrfs alone does not create a usable rollback policy. You must know which snapshot tool is configured, where snapshots are stored, how much space they consume and how to boot or restore one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Encryption

Enable full-disk or volume encryption only after confirming that you have a recovery method and understand when the passphrase will be requested. Store the passphrase in a secure place separate from the computer. An encrypted disk does not protect files after you have unlocked the running system, so continue to use ordinary backups.

User, locale and network settings

Create a non-root user for daily work, set the correct time zone and keyboard layout, and connect to a trusted network. Accurate time helps encrypted connections and package-signature validation. If the installer offers a choice of desktop, select only what you intend to maintain.

Bootloader

Confirm where the bootloader will be installed, especially on a dual-boot computer with more than one disk. Record the selected disk and firmware entry. A bootloader problem can leave the operating system intact but inaccessible, which is why the installation USB should be kept as a recovery medium.

First boot: establish a known-good baseline

Do not immediately install a large collection of applications. First prove that the base system is healthy.

  1. Boot from the internal disk and confirm that the expected distribution and kernel start without the USB inserted.
  2. Test wired or wireless networking, then verify the system clock and time zone.
  3. Check display output, graphics acceleration where applicable, audio, suspend or power management and the devices you rely on daily.
  4. Install only required firmware, drivers and applications using the distribution’s repositories or the hardware vendor’s documented method.
  5. Record the installed kernel, desktop, disk layout, encryption status and bootloader mode. This inventory makes later recovery less ambiguous.
  6. Create a restore or recovery medium while the machine is working, and keep the verified installation USB available.

openSUSE’s post-install material covers system settings, software, drivers, power management and pairing or sharing. Use equivalent current documentation for Arch or EndeavourOS rather than assuming that an openSUSE menu or package name exists elsewhere.

Keep the installed system current

Arch Linux

Update an existing Arch installation with:

sudo pacman -Syu

Read the command output and any distribution news that affects a transition. Avoid partial upgrades: do not update one library or application while leaving the rest of the system at an incompatible state. The installation ISO is not a substitute for this command.

openSUSE Tumbleweed

Tumbleweed documents:

sudo zypper dup

Tumbleweed collects continuous updates into batches called snapshots and says those batches are tested through openQA, its testing pipeline. The dup operation can add or remove packages as repository state changes, so review the proposed transaction rather than approving it blindly. If a conflict appears, stop and consult the current Tumbleweed guidance instead of forcing a solution from a different distribution.

EndeavourOS

EndeavourOS uses the Arch package ecosystem and points users to Pacman commands in its Discovery documentation. Follow its current package-management and update guidance, including any notices about mirrors, kernels or bootloader changes. Do not infer that an EndeavourOS installation has the same defaults as a manually built Arch installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For all three systems, keep enough free disk space for a new kernel and package cache, avoid interrupting an update, and reboot when a kernel or low-level system component requires it. A rolling system is maintained by completing coherent updates, not by repeatedly reinstalling the latest ISO.

Understand snapshots, backups and rollback

The word “snapshot” can describe different things. Tumbleweed documentation distinguishes distribution update snapshots—batches of packages tested in openQA—from Btrfs filesystem snapshots, which are point-in-time filesystem states that can support rollback. They are related but not interchangeable.

Filesystem snapshots

A filesystem snapshot can capture system files before an update and let you return to an earlier state. It generally shares storage with the live filesystem, so deleting files, disk failure or insufficient free space can limit its value. A snapshot policy should specify when snapshots are created, how long they are retained and how you remove old ones safely.

Tumbleweed rollback procedure

For the documented Tumbleweed setup, the recovery path is to select a read-only snapshot from GRUB, boot that snapshot and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo snapper rollback

This procedure is specific to the Tumbleweed configuration described by its documentation. Do not run snapper rollback on Arch or EndeavourOS unless their current documentation explicitly describes an equivalent setup. After a rollback, review package state and complete the distribution’s recommended follow-up steps.

Timeshift and EndeavourOS

EndeavourOS Discovery points users to Timeshift snapshot guidance and to arch-chroot recovery material for systems that fail after a bootloader or update problem. Those references are follow-up resources, not proof that every EndeavourOS installation has Timeshift, Btrfs or automatic snapshots configured. Verify the filesystem and tool configuration on your own installation before relying on it.

Why a snapshot is not a backup

A snapshot normally remains on the same disk as the operating system. Theft, disk failure, accidental deletion or an unrecoverable encryption error can destroy both the live data and its snapshots. Keep an independent backup of personal files, and test restoring a representative file. Snapshots are useful for quickly reversing a bad system change; backups are for recovering data when the computer or disk is unavailable.

Prepare for recovery before you need it

Keep the verified installation USB, encryption recovery information and a written record of your disk and firmware choices. Add the following to your recovery checklist:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • The distribution and desktop release currently installed.
  • Disk identifiers, partition purpose and whether the system uses UEFI or legacy BIOS.
  • Encryption passphrase or recovery key stored securely away from the computer.
  • Network details needed to reach repositories from a live environment.
  • The backup location and the date of its last successful test.
  • Snapshot tool, filesystem and the documented rollback or restore procedure.

For a machine that will not boot, first distinguish a bootloader failure from a damaged filesystem or a failed update. If the live environment can mount the installed system, use the distribution’s documented recovery method. EndeavourOS provides arch-chroot guidance for repair; Arch and Tumbleweed have their own procedures. Do not paste a recovery command from one distribution into another merely because both use similar package names.

Troubleshoot common installation and update failures

The USB does not appear in the boot menu

Recheck that the image was written as bootable media, confirm the firmware mode, try another USB port and consult the computer’s boot-menu documentation. If the checksum did not match, recreate the drive from a newly downloaded image.

The installer cannot reach repositories

For a Network installer, verify the cable or wireless connection, DNS and time. A Live or DVD image may provide more local content, but post-install updates still require working repositories. Do not disable signature checks to bypass a repository error.

The system boots but has no network or graphics

Use the live medium or installed console to identify the hardware, then install only the firmware or driver supported by the chosen distribution. Check power-management and display settings after the base system is updated. Avoid mixing packages intended for another distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An update proposes removals

Tumbleweed’s documented zypper dup operation can add or remove packages as repository state changes. Read the transaction, verify that removals are expected and stop if a critical desktop or driver would disappear. Search the current distribution documentation for the specific transition rather than forcing dependency resolution.

The machine will not boot after an update

If you configured the documented Tumbleweed Btrfs setup, boot the prior read-only snapshot from GRUB and use sudo snapper rollback. On EndeavourOS, consult its bootloader and arch-chroot recovery guidance. On Arch, use the current Arch recovery instructions. A filesystem snapshot cannot repair a failed disk or restore personal files that were never backed up.

A sustainable maintenance routine

After installation, make maintenance predictable rather than reactive.

  1. Update through the chosen distribution’s supported command and read the resulting transaction.
  2. Apply updates when you have time to reboot and test essential hardware.
  3. Keep independent personal-file backups and periodically verify a restore.
  4. Retain enough disk space for package downloads, kernels and snapshots.
  5. Remove obsolete snapshots according to the snapshot tool’s documentation.
  6. Keep the installation and recovery media current enough to recognize your hardware.
  7. Record changes to encryption, bootloader, filesystem and repository configuration.

The result is a rolling-release installation that is current without being careless: the installer is used once, package updates follow the selected distribution, and rollback and backup plans are understood before an emergency.
