The safest way to install a privacy-focused Android keyboard is to get it from the project’s official distribution channel or the F-Droid client, verify the package and update path, enable it through Android’s input-method settings, and then switch off learning, cloud, voice, analytics and other features you do not need. Review the app’s permissions in Android and test typing before using the keyboard for passwords or other sensitive information.
AnySoftKeyboard is an open-source option whose F-Droid listing emphasizes privacy and support for multiple languages. Its listing recommends using the F-Droid client; installing its APK directly does not provide update notifications. The exact settings names differ between Android versions and manufacturers, so use the Settings search for keyboard, input method, permissions and Privacy Dashboard when a menu is not where this guide places it.
What a privacy-focused keyboard can and cannot protect
A keyboard app is an input method: it receives the characters you type before another app gets them. That makes its source, permissions, data-learning policy and network features more important than they are for many ordinary apps. A keyboard may also see words used for suggestions, contact names used for address completion, clipboard contents, voice input and search queries, depending on the features you enable.
“Privacy-focused” is not a guarantee that every keystroke stays on the device. It describes an intent or design emphasis. You still have to check where the app came from, what it asks to access, whether prediction or voice processing uses a remote service, and what information it stores locally. Android’s permission system can limit sensitive access, but an input method remains active while you type, so its own design and update process matter.

- Source provenance: install from the project’s official distribution page or a reputable catalog such as F-Droid, and verify the package name and signing or update information.
- Data path: determine whether suggestions, voice recognition, search and synchronization are processed locally or sent to a service.
- Stored data: check whether learned words and typing history can be reviewed or deleted.
- Access: grant contacts, user-dictionary, notification, vibration or other permissions only when a feature actually needs them.
- Compatibility: confirm that the keyboard supports your Android release and the languages and layouts you use.
Choose a trustworthy installation source
Prefer the official project channel or an F-Droid client
Start with the keyboard project’s own distribution page or the F-Droid client rather than a random APK mirror. For AnySoftKeyboard, the F-Droid listing recommends the F-Droid client. The client can notify you about updates, while the listing warns that a direct APK installation does not provide update notifications. Missing update notices makes it easier to keep running an old version with an unaddressed defect.
Before downloading, check the exact package name, the publisher or project identity, the signing information shown by the distribution channel, the release date and the Android version requirement. A familiar app name is not enough: malicious packages can copy names and icons. If the project publishes checksums or signing details, compare them with the values shown by the source you use.
Use an APK only when you can maintain it
Direct installation can be appropriate when you understand the project’s release process and have a reliable way to check for new versions. Enable installation from the browser or file manager only for the installation, then turn that permission off again. Keep the downloaded file and its source information so you can verify future updates, and do not accept an update from a different publisher or package identity without investigating why it changed.

The AnySoftKeyboard package shown by F-Droid requires Android 6.0 or newer. Other keyboards may require a different minimum version. If your device is older, do not bypass the requirement with an unofficial build: an incompatible input method can crash, fail to appear in the keyboard picker or leave you temporarily without a usable keyboard.
Install and activate the keyboard
Installation alone does not make a keyboard available for typing. Android separates installing an input method from enabling it and selecting it as the current keyboard.
- Install from the chosen source. In the F-Droid client, locate the exact project listing and install it. If you are using an official APK, verify the package and signature information first, install it, and disable the temporary “install unknown apps” permission afterward.
- Open the keyboard’s settings or onboarding app. AnySoftKeyboard’s listing specifically tells users to launch its Settings app and follow the activation instructions. The first-run screen normally provides shortcuts to Android’s input-method settings.
- Enable the input method. Follow the shortcut, or open Settings and search for keyboard or input method. Open the screen that lists on-screen keyboards, enable the new keyboard and read Android’s warning about an input method being able to receive typed text before confirming.
- Select it as the current keyboard. In the same area, choose Default keyboard, Current keyboard or the equivalent vendor label, then select the new input method. You can usually switch temporarily from the keyboard icon in the navigation bar or the keyboard selector notification.
- Finish the keyboard’s own setup. Select a language package, layout and optional features. Do not install every language or dictionary “just in case”; a smaller configuration reduces clutter and unnecessary stored data.
Menu names vary among Samsung, Pixel, Motorola and other Android devices, as well as between Android releases. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for virtual keyboard, on-screen keyboard, input method or default keyboard. A work-profile or parental-control policy may also prevent enabling a third-party input method; the device administrator must change that policy.

Choose only the languages and layouts you need
Add languages from the keyboard settings
Open a text field, display the keyboard and enter its Settings screen. The general Android pattern documented in Google’s Gboard setup instructions is to open keyboard Settings, choose Languages, select a language and layout, and save. Privacy-focused keyboards use different labels, but the sequence is similar. Keep one layout per language unless you genuinely switch between alternatives.

Language packages may contain a layout, autocorrection rules and a dictionary. Download them only from the keyboard’s own settings or its trusted distribution channel. A dictionary improves suggestions but can also make the keyboard retain more vocabulary. If the app offers separate voice or gesture packages, leave them uninstalled until you decide that you need them.
Confirm behavior per language
Type a short, non-sensitive note in each enabled language. Check accented characters, punctuation, autocorrection and the language-switch key. Remove unused languages if suggestions become confusing or if you want to reduce the amount of learned data held by the app.
Audit permissions before granting access
Open Settings → Apps → [your keyboard] → Permissions, or use the permission screen linked from the keyboard’s app page. Android’s Privacy Dashboard can show when sensitive permissions were accessed. Android Developers recommends requesting a permission when it is needed rather than at app startup, removing unnecessary permissions and continuing to work when a permission is denied. Apply that principle to every optional keyboard feature.

The F-Droid listing for AnySoftKeyboard shows contact access, user-dictionary access, vibration control and notifications among its permissions. The presence of a permission does not prove that data is sent anywhere, but it tells you what to investigate and what may stop working if you deny it.
Turn off features that expand data exposure
Personalized learning and next-word prediction
AnySoftKeyboard’s listing says it can learn typing behavior for next-word prediction. Decide whether faster suggestions are worth retaining words or patterns. If you do not want the keyboard to learn, disable learning or personalized suggestions in the keyboard’s settings. If the app offers a “clear learned words” or “reset dictionary” command, use it after disabling learning to remove data already collected.

Cloud synchronization and backup
Look for settings named sync, backup, personalization or cloud. Turn them off unless you need the convenience of carrying a dictionary between devices. Also check Android backup settings: a local dictionary may be included in an app or device backup even when the keyboard itself does not transmit it during typing.
Voice input
Voice typing can involve microphone permission and, depending on the implementation, remote speech processing. Leave the microphone permission denied if you never dictate. If you do use voice input, identify whether recognition is performed on the device or by an online service, and do not dictate passwords, recovery codes or confidential conversations.
Analytics, search and remote content
Disable usage analytics, in-keyboard search, trending content and remote suggestions when they are not essential. These features may require network access or send queries outside the device. A keyboard can remain useful with a local layout, local dictionary and ordinary autocorrection.

Delete stored data when changing keyboards
Before uninstalling an old keyboard, open its privacy or dictionary settings and delete learned words if that option exists. Then remove the app or clear its storage from Android’s app settings. Deleting app data can remove layouts and preferences, so export nothing unless you understand where the export is stored and who can read it.
Protect clipboard contents
Clipboard data can include passwords, one-time codes, addresses and private messages. On Android 10 and later, GrapheneOS documents that only the configured default input method and the currently focused app can read clipboard content. GrapheneOS can also show notices when clipboard access occurs. Those controls reduce exposure, but they do not make every keyboard trustworthy.
- Do not leave a password or recovery code in the clipboard after pasting it.
- Use the keyboard or Android clipboard manager to clear sensitive entries immediately.
- Check whether your keyboard offers clipboard history and turn that history off if you do not need it.
- Remember that a focused app can read what you paste; clipboard protection does not prevent the destination app from receiving the content.
Test the setup before using it for sensitive work
Use a harmless note or draft message for the first test. This confirms that the keyboard works while giving you a chance to inspect its behavior.

- Type ordinary sentences in every enabled language and check autocorrection, punctuation and layout switching.
- Deny an optional permission, such as contacts or notifications, and confirm that basic typing still works. If it does not, decide whether the dependent feature is worth the access.
- Open a password field and verify that the keyboard appears without automatically displaying or learning the password. Do not type a real password during this test.
- Try the emoji, clipboard and voice buttons separately. Leave unused buttons disabled so they cannot be activated accidentally.
- Open Android’s Privacy Dashboard and review recent permission access. Unexpected microphone, contacts or other sensitive access is a reason to disable the feature and investigate.
- Check the keyboard’s update screen and note how you will receive future releases. A direct APK install without update notifications requires a manual reminder.
Do not infer network or privacy performance from this basic test. It verifies configuration and usability, not whether an app transmits data. For that question, rely on the project’s documented behavior, source code and release information rather than an undocumented personal observation.

What AnySoftKeyboard offers
F-Droid describes AnySoftKeyboard as “an open-source, on-screen keyboard with multiple languages support with emphasis on privacy.” The listing documents language packages, dictionaries, voice input and learning behavior, and identifies Android 6.0 or newer as the package requirement shown there.
Its privacy trade-off is straightforward: you can use local language and layout features while declining contacts, user-dictionary, notification or vibration access that you do not need, but enabling learning, voice input or other optional functions may expand what the app stores or accesses. Read the permission and feature descriptions in the version you install because package contents and settings can change between releases.
GrapheneOS and other privacy-oriented Android configurations
GrapheneOS does not include Google apps and services by default and changes defaults to prefer privacy. Its documentation says personalized keyboard suggestions based on input history are disabled by default. That reduces one source of exposure, but it does not replace an audit of the keyboard you install.
GrapheneOS also documents the Android 10-and-later clipboard rule described above. On any Android distribution, inspect the active input method, permissions, learning controls and update source. A privacy-oriented operating system can constrain access, while an untrusted keyboard can still receive everything you type into the fields where it is active.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The keyboard is installed but not listed
Restart the device, open the on-screen-keyboard list and check whether the app is enabled. If it still does not appear, confirm that the package supports your Android version and that a work profile or administrator has not blocked third-party input methods. Reinstall only from the same trusted source; do not install a second package with a similar name.

Android keeps switching back to another keyboard
Open Settings → System → Languages & input or search for default keyboard, then select the intended input method again. Some devices show a keyboard selector notification or a keyboard icon in the navigation bar; use it to verify which input method is active in each profile.
Autocorrection or a language is wrong
Return to the keyboard’s Languages or Layouts screen, remove unused languages and select the correct layout. Download the matching language package from the keyboard’s own settings, then test punctuation and accented characters in a non-sensitive note.
A feature stopped after a permission was denied
Identify which feature depends on that permission. Contacts may be needed for name suggestions, microphone for voice input, notifications for status messages and vibration control for haptic feedback. Re-enable only the specific permission you accept, or leave it denied and use the keyboard without that feature.

Check the project’s official release channel for a newer package with the same signing identity. If the package or signer differs, stop and investigate rather than installing over the existing keyboard. Consider moving to the F-Droid client when the project supports it so update notifications are handled automatically.
A practical decision checklist
Before making the keyboard your default, confirm each item:
