Install BitChord as an Android APK from the project’s signed GitHub release, then run the separate bitchord-selfhosted-addon in Docker to expose a Plex or Jellyfin music library. The addon needs HTTPS, a persistent /data volume and a protected setup account; BitChord itself is an Android client, not a server.
Understand the architecture before installing anything
BitChord is an open-source Android client for YouTube Music. Its signed Android builds are distributed through the project’s GitHub Releases page. The app can act as a client for YouTube Music and can also consume sources supplied by the self-hosted addon.
The private-library part is a separate service named bitchord-selfhosted-addon. It runs as a small Docker service, connects to your Plex or Jellyfin music server, and generates a source link that BitChord can open. It does not contain a music catalogue, download music, or turn the Android application into a server.

The resulting arrangement has four distinct pieces:
- BitChord Android app: the player and browsing interface on your phone or tablet.
- Self-hosted addon: the Docker service that translates Plex or Jellyfin access into a BitChord source.
- Media server: your existing Plex server or Jellyfin 10.9-or-newer server, containing the music.
- HTTPS entry point: a reverse proxy or tunnel that publishes the addon securely and forwards traffic to its port 8080.
That separation matters when troubleshooting. Installing the APK does not publish your library, and installing the addon does not install or supply music.
Requirements and deployment decisions
Prepare these items before opening the setup page:
- An Android device on which you can install an APK from the browser or file manager that downloads it.
- A machine that can run Docker and Docker Compose for the addon.
- An accessible Plex server or a Jellyfin server running version 10.9 or newer.
- A DNS name or other stable HTTPS address for the addon.
- A reverse proxy such as Caddy, Traefik or nginx, or a Cloudflare Tunnel.
- A persistent host directory mounted as the addon’s
/datavolume. - Network routing that allows the addon container to reach the selected media server.
The official documentation does not require a particular mini PC, NAS, Raspberry Pi or other physical host. Choose hardware that can already run Docker and reach the media server; no product model is endorsed or required.
Plex or Jellyfin?

The addon’s job is the same in either case: it presents the selected server’s music to BitChord. The reviewed documentation provides setup instructions but no independent performance measurements comparing Plex and Jellyfin.
Install the BitChord Android client
- Open the official release page. Go to the BitChord project’s official GitHub repository and open its Releases page. Use the current signed APK rather than an unverified mirror.
- Read the release notes. Version numbers and packaging can change, so check the notes for the release you are about to install instead of relying on an old version number.
- Download the APK. Save the latest signed Android package to the device, or download it on a computer and transfer it to the device.
- Allow installation from the downloading app. In Android Settings, open the security or app-installation controls, choose the browser or file manager used for the download, and enable Install unknown apps. Android labels vary by manufacturer and version.
- Open the package. Tap the downloaded APK in the browser’s download list or file manager and approve the installation prompt.
- Launch BitChord. Complete any first-run prompts. You can use the regular YouTube Music functions immediately; the private source is added after the addon has been deployed.
Only grant the unknown-app permission to the app you trust for this installation. Android may let you turn the permission back off after BitChord is installed.

Deploy the self-hosted addon with Docker
1. Create persistent storage
Choose a host directory that will survive container recreation and map it to /data inside the addon. The addon stores its settings, server tokens and secret in that directory. If the volume disappears, recreating the container removes the saved configuration even though the media remains on Plex or Jellyfin.
Make the directory writable by container user 65532. Apply the ownership or permissions on the host before starting the service; otherwise the container may start without being able to save setup data.

Use the addon project’s published container image and its compose.example.yml as the template for your compose.yml. Keep the persistent /data mapping from that example. Do not substitute a temporary directory if you expect settings and tokens to survive updates.
Attach the service to the same Docker network used by your reverse proxy. The addon listens inside the container on port 8080; the proxy will publish the public HTTPS address and forward requests to that port.
3. Start the container
From the directory containing your Compose file, run:

docker compose up -dCheck the container status and logs if it does not remain running. A permissions error involving /data usually means the host directory is not writable by UID 65532.

4. Put HTTPS in front of the service
Configure Caddy, Traefik, nginx or a Cloudflare Tunnel with a hostname and a valid TLS certificate. Forward that HTTPS hostname to the addon’s port 8080 on the Docker network. The addon documentation expects HTTPS rather than an unencrypted public endpoint.
If you use nginx, disable both response buffering and request buffering for this upstream and set a long read timeout. Buffering or an overly short timeout can allow searches to work while interrupting audio streaming.
5. Claim the setup page immediately
Open https://your-host/setup as soon as the HTTPS route is live and set the addon password. The setup page is initially claimable by anyone who can reach it, so do not leave it exposed while unattended.
6. Add your media server
In the setup interface, add either a Plex or Jellyfin server. Authenticate when prompted or paste the server token requested by the form, then save the server entry. The addon uses that saved connection to read the server’s music libraries.

7. Copy the generated source link
After the server is saved, the addon generates a BitChord server link. Copy it exactly; it is the address BitChord will use for this private library.
Add the private source in BitChord
- Open BitChord on Android.
- Open Sources.
- Choose the option to add a source.
- Paste the generated link from the addon.
- Save it and select the new source when browsing or searching.
Use the HTTPS link, not the container’s internal address or a private Docker hostname. The Android device must be able to resolve the hostname and reach it over the network where you intend to use BitChord.
Secure the generated link and stored data
A generated source link is effectively a streaming credential: anyone who possesses it can stream the library exposed by that link. Send it only to trusted users, avoid posting it in screenshots or public issue reports, and protect it in password managers or other secure storage.
Protect the host and the reverse proxy with normal administrator controls, keep TLS enabled, and avoid exposing the container’s raw port directly to the internet. Restrict Docker access to administrators because access to the Compose project or its volume can reveal the addon’s secret and server tokens.

Back up the persistent /data directory. The backup should include the addon settings, tokens and secret, and should be protected like credentials. Test that you can restore the directory before removing an old host or recreating the service.

Troubleshoot common failures

Updating without losing the configuration
Updating BitChord
Check the official GitHub Releases page periodically, read the release notes, download the newest signed APK and install it over the existing app. Android may ask you to confirm the update or re-enable the installer permission. The release page is the authority for current version numbers.
Updating the addon
Review the addon’s release or README instructions before replacing its published container image. Pull the newer image and recreate the Compose service using the same persistent /data mapping and proxy network. Do not delete the data directory as part of an update.
After an update, open the source in BitChord, test a search and play a track. If the source link changed, copy the newly generated link and replace the old entry in BitChord.
Optional developer extension: another catalogue
The addon guide also documents an extension path for developers who want to expose a different catalogue. That path uses three small JSON endpoints. Every media URL and artwork URL returned by those endpoints must include both a URL scheme and a host, such as an HTTPS address that clients can resolve. This is an addon-development option, not a requirement for Plex or Jellyfin installation.

For most households, the practical sequence is to install BitChord first, confirm that the Android client launches, then deploy the addon beside the media server and add one generated source. Keeping those layers separate makes upgrades and fault-finding much easier.
