The reliable way to mod Cyberpunk 2077 on a Steam Deck is to treat SteamOS as a Linux/Proton installation, not as a Windows PC. Start in Desktop Mode, record your original settings, back up saves and game files, install Protontricks with the required Windows components, and add the exact DLL-override launch option. Then install one loader or mod chain at a time while preserving each archive’s intended folder structure.
For removal, disable the mod, delete only the files and settings introduced by your workflow, restore the original launch options, let REDmod redeploy when applicable, and verify the game files in Steam. Performance mods can affect shader compilation, streaming, CPU scheduling, frame pacing, or image quality, but there is no authoritative universal FPS increase for a generic performance mod on Steam Deck.
What you need before installing anything
Cyberpunk 2077 modding on Steam Deck uses the Windows game running through Proton. The Linux-specific setup therefore matters as much as the mod’s own files. A mod that works on a Windows installation can fail on SteamOS because Protontricks, Winetricks components, DLL overrides, launch syntax, or file paths are missing or incorrect.
Record a baseline
Switch to Desktop Mode and write down the current state before changing the game:

- Your Steam launch options, including whether the field is empty.
- The Proton version selected for Cyberpunk 2077.
- Your SteamOS version and Cyberpunk 2077 build.
- Resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate cap, upscaling settings, and any overlay settings.
- A repeatable test location or route in the game and a short description of the usual frame-time behavior.
These notes let you distinguish a mod’s effect from a Proton, SteamOS, game-patch, or graphics-setting change. A performance comparison is meaningful only when the same scene, resolution, preset, cap, and overlay are used before and after installation.
Back up saves and game files
Back up your saves before installing loaders or scripts. Also choose a game-file backup scope. Selective backup of core files uses less storage and makes a targeted rollback easier; a full Cyberpunk 2077 folder backup gives you a broader recovery option but requires substantially more space. Keep the backup outside the live game directory and label it with the date, game build, Proton version, and original launch options.
Make an install log as you work. For every mod, record its name, version, dependencies, destination folders, files that were copied, and any launch-option change. This log is more reliable than trying to remember which DLL belongs to which loader weeks later.

Install the Linux prerequisites
Install Protontricks
- In Desktop Mode, open Discover.
- Install Protontricks.
- Open Protontricks and select Cyberpunk 2077. Its Steam application ID is
1091500. - Configure the game’s Proton prefix with the Windows components
d3dcompiler_47andvcrun2022.
These components are prerequisites in the Linux installation guide used for this setup. If the graphical operation for vcrun2022 fails, run this command in a terminal:
protontricks 1091500 --force vcrun2022Run the command for the same Steam library installation that contains Cyberpunk 2077. If Protontricks cannot find the game, check that Steam is installed and that the game has been launched at least once under the Proton version you intend to use.
Set the exact Steam launch option
- Open Steam in Desktop Mode.
- Right-click Cyberpunk 2077 and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find Launch Options.
- Paste this line exactly:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm,version=n,b" %command%The command is case sensitive. Preserve the capitalization, quotation marks, comma placement, equal sign, percent signs, and spaces. Missing a character, adding an extra space, or changing the order can prevent the override from working. Do not append a second %command% or replace the line with a visually similar version.

Keep a copy of the original launch field in your notes. You will restore it when returning to an unmodded installation, unless another component still requires the override.
Understand Cyberpunk 2077’s two mod formats
Before extracting an archive, identify whether it is a legacy archive-folder mod or a REDmod package. The two formats have different destinations and are not interchangeable.

CD PROJEKT RED describes REDmod as a free Cyberpunk 2077 DLC that adds integrated mod installation and loading support plus modding tools. REDmod-compatible mods belong in the game’s mods directory and can be identified by an info.json manifest. Older archive-folder mods remain supported. REDmod is therefore optional for a legacy archive mod, but a package marked REDmod-only needs the DLC and a REDmod-capable deployment process.
Preserve the archive’s root structure
Manual installation is essentially extracting the downloaded archive into the game directory, and it is easy to extract one level too high or too low. Open the archive before copying it. Follow the mod author’s stated root path and merge the archive’s folders with the existing game folders; do not create an extra directory named after the download unless the instructions explicitly require it.
For example, if the archive opens directly to archive/pc/mod, merge that archive folder into the Cyberpunk 2077 installation directory. If it opens to a named folder containing info.json, that named folder belongs under Cyberpunk 2077/mods. The visible download filename is not a reliable guide to the required destination.

Install a performance mod safely
Choose a manager or a documented manual install
A mod manager can reduce path mistakes, track files, and make disabling a mod easier. Manual installation is workable when the mod has clear instructions and you maintain an install log, but it requires you to identify every file and folder yourself.

If a manager offers automatic conversion between legacy archives and REDmod packages, leave conversion disabled unless the current extension documentation explicitly says that the conversion is safe for your version. A community guide records compatibility problems with automatic REDmod conversion.
Install dependencies first
Read the mod page’s requirements before copying the performance files. Common loader or framework dependencies include RED4ext, redscript, Codeware, and Cyber Engine Tweaks. Install the required dependency chain in the order documented by the mod author, then launch the game before adding the performance mod itself.
Some Linux-focused tools can check for missing Protontricks, Winetricks packages, and incorrect Wine DLL overrides. Treat those checks as configuration diagnostics, not proof that every mod is compatible with your current game patch or Proton build.

- Install one loader or one complete dependency chain.
- Start Cyberpunk 2077 and wait at least long enough to reach the main menu.
- Load a disposable save or a copy of your backed-up save.
- Close the game and record whether it launched, whether errors appeared, and whether load time changed.
- Only then install the next dependency or the performance mod.
This staging method gives you a known failure point. If you install five loaders and the game stops launching, you cannot tell which change caused the problem or which files are safe to remove.
Install a legacy archive mod
- Close the game.
- Open the archive and verify its intended root path.
- Merge the supplied
archive/pc/modstructure into the Cyberpunk 2077 installation directory. - Record every new archive, DLL, script, XML, YAML, or other file in your install log.
- Launch the game and test your repeatable scene before adding another mod.
Do not copy a legacy archive into the REDmod mods directory merely because both formats use the word “mod.” Their loaders and folder structures differ.
Install a REDmod package
- Confirm that the package contains
info.json. - Place the complete mod folder under
Cyberpunk 2077/mods/<mod-name>/. - Install the REDmod DLC if the package requires it.
- Enable or deploy the package through the supported launcher or manager.
- Allow deployment to precompile the package, then launch and test.
REDmod’s precompilation changes load behavior and uses r6/cache. Do not assume that deleting a random cache directory is a safe way to remove one package; cache content can belong to other deployed mods.

How to judge a performance mod on Steam Deck
“Performance mod” can mean several different things. Compare a mod by what it changes, not by its label.

| Change type | Does it replace game files, add scripts and DLLs, or change only launch parameters? |
Use the same resolution, preset, frame cap, overlay, save, and route for every comparison. Record average FPS only together with frame-time behavior, stutter, loading time, and visual changes. The available technical documentation does not provide a reproducible FPS statistic for a generic Cyberpunk 2077 performance mod on Steam Deck, so any improvement you observe is specific to your hardware, game build, Proton version, settings, and test scene. Do not treat a mod description’s claimed gain as a universal result.

Use the manager first when possible
- Close Cyberpunk 2077.
- Disable the mod in your mod manager or REDmod interface.
- Remove the mod’s own files and dependencies according to your install log.
- Restore the original Steam launch options if you are returning to vanilla.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
Disabling a mod is not always the same as removing it. A disabled entry may leave a loader DLL, script, archive, or launch override in place. Check the installed files after disabling.
Manual removal surfaces
Remove only files that your mod workflow introduced. Depending on the loaders and mods installed, common locations include:
bin/x64/version.dllbin/x64/winmm.dllbin/x64/dxgi.dllarchive/pc/modr6/scriptsr6/inputr6/tweaks
These paths can contain files from different mods. Do not delete an entire directory simply because one mod used it. Use the install log, the mod’s uninstall instructions, and your backup to identify the exact files. Loader DLLs may be shared by several mods, so remove one only after confirming that no remaining mod depends on it.

- Disable the package in the supported launcher or manager.
- Delete that package’s folder under
Cyberpunk 2077/mods. - Redeploy the remaining REDmod packages.
- Let the deployment process regenerate the necessary compiled content.
Do not blindly delete all of r6/cache. REDmod precompiles packages there, and unrelated deployed content may rely on the same cache. If deployment remains broken, use the manager’s redeploy function or restore the core-file backup rather than guessing which cache files belong to which mod.

Restore the launch field and verify files
Remove WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm,version=n,b" %command% from Launch Options when no installed component requires it. Then use Steam’s file-verification command for Cyberpunk 2077 and launch once with mods removed. Verification can restore altered official files, but it does not necessarily remove every third-party DLL, script, or archive, which is why the manual cleanup step comes first.
Only after the clean launch succeeds should you restore a backed-up save. If the game still fails, remove remaining third-party loaders identified in your log or restore the core-file backup. A full-folder backup is the broadest rollback when the installed state is unclear.
Temporary disabling for troubleshooting
A community Linux toggle script can temporarily rename mod DLLs, archives, scripts, XML files, and YAML files so the game can be tested without deleting them. Its author labels it use-at-your-own-risk. Treat it as a troubleshooting aid rather than an official Cyberpunk 2077 tool.

Leaving files in a renamed state can make later cleanup ambiguous and can cause a manager to lose track of them.
What to do after a Cyberpunk 2077, SteamOS, or Proton update
- Before testing a newly updated game, disable all mods or use your documented clean state.
- Launch once and confirm that the unmodded game reaches the main menu and loads a disposable save.
- Check each loader and mod’s compatibility with the new Cyberpunk 2077 build and your current Proton version.
- Recheck the launch option character by character; updates and troubleshooting often expose a typo or an accidentally changed field.
- Verify the game files if the clean launch is unstable.
- Reinstall or re-enable dependencies one at a time, testing after each change.
A game update can invalidate a loader even when the mod’s files have not changed. SteamOS or Proton updates can also alter how a DLL override behaves. Never assume that a previously working dependency chain remains valid after an update.
Troubleshooting branches
The mod does nothing
- Confirm that the archive was extracted into the intended game root, not into an extra nested folder.
- Check whether the mod is legacy or REDmod and move it to the corresponding location.
- For REDmod, confirm that the package folder contains
info.jsonand has been deployed. - Recheck Protontricks,
d3dcompiler_47,vcrun2022, and the exact DLL override. - Confirm that the mod supports your Cyberpunk 2077 patch and Proton build.
The game will not launch after installation
- Remove the most recently added mod or dependency first.
- Temporarily disable third-party DLLs and scripts using your manager or documented install log.
- Restore the original launch options and test a clean launch.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- If the problem persists, restore the core-file backup rather than deleting unrelated folders.
vcrun2022 will not install
Try the documented command protontricks 1091500 --force vcrun2022. Confirm that Protontricks is current and that it is targeting the Cyberpunk 2077 prefix. A missing or incorrect prefix selection can make the command appear to succeed while changing the wrong game environment.
The game broke after an update
Disable all mods, launch vanilla, and verify files. Then check loader and mod compatibility for the new game build and Proton version. Reapply the launch option exactly only after confirming that the current dependency chain still supports it. If a manager offers automatic format conversion, do not enable it as a guess; use the extension’s current compatibility guidance.
Support and responsibility
CD PROJEKT RED’s installation guidance is to copy a chosen mod into the appropriate game folder as specified by that mod’s instructions. The company also states that it does not create or maintain mods for its games and does not take responsibility for how community mods function or for issues caused by their use. For unresolved loader failures, use the mod author’s issue tracker or established Cyberpunk modding troubleshooting channels rather than expecting official support for an individual community mod.
A repeatable clean-state checklist
- Desktop Mode used for setup and file management.
- Original launch options, Proton version, SteamOS version, game build, and graphics settings recorded.
- Saves backed up and a core-file or full-folder backup stored outside the live installation.
- Protontricks installed and the Cyberpunk 2077 prefix selected.

- Dependencies installed and tested before the performance mod.
- One loader or mod chain staged at a time.

- Removal performed from the install log, with REDmod packages redeployed rather than deleting cache blindly.
- Original launch options restored and Steam file verification completed before a backed-up save is used.
This process keeps a failed experiment reversible and makes update-related breakage diagnosable without reinstalling the entire game.
