Install a DLSS feature mod only after confirming that the specific mod supports your exact game, graphics API and release. Put its files beside the game’s main executable—not automatically in the launcher’s library folder or an Unreal Engine installation folder—keep a written record of every file added or replaced, and use the mod’s own removal instructions when you uninstall it.
OptiScaler and DLSS Enabler are different projects with different installation methods. The steps below keep them separate. No DLL is universally safe to delete, and a technically loadable mod is not automatically permitted in an online or anti-cheat-protected game.
What a “DLSS feature mod” actually is
“DLSS mod” is a broad label for projects that change how a game loads NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling components or add features around an existing upscaler integration. The mod may replace a library, redirect an upscaling call, expose another reconstruction method, or add a feature through middleware. Those approaches are not interchangeable.

The result depends on the game’s integration, whether it uses DirectX 11, DirectX 12 or Vulkan, and which native upscaler and feature the game exposes. A game that supports DLSS 2+, FSR 2+ or XeSS may still require a title-specific workaround and is not guaranteed to work.

DLSS Enabler follows a different pattern in the cited instructions: its single DLL is renamed to a filename the target game accepts and then placed beside the game executable. That is not an OptiScaler procedure. Always use the current instructions for the project and release you downloaded.
Decide whether the mod is appropriate before touching files
Check the exact game entry
Start with the project’s current compatibility list, then open the detailed entry for your game. The list is community-maintained and explicitly incomplete. Read the tested input, required settings, graphics API, workaround, known issues and any notes about a particular game build. “Compatible with most games” is not a guarantee for your title.
Compatibility can change after a game update, a mod release or a graphics-driver change. Record the game version and mod version you are using so you can reproduce or undo the installation later.
Consider online and anti-cheat restrictions
OptiScaler’s README warns: “Warning: Do not use this mod with online games. It may trigger anti-cheat software and cause bans!” Treat that as a serious restriction. Do not infer that a DLL is allowed merely because Windows loads it. A publisher can prohibit modified files even when the game starts normally.
Use a feature mod only in an offline or single-player context where the game’s rules permit it. If the game has an anti-cheat service, a connected launcher, leaderboards or shared progression, check the publisher’s current policy before installing anything. When the policy is unclear, leave the game unmodified.
Choose the project from its legitimate distribution location
Download from the project’s identified repository or release location, and match the instructions to the release version. The OptiScaler contributors state that the project is free and warn that fake websites and unofficial manager applications exist. There is no official OptiScaler manager app. Do not use a download manager or repackaging site simply because it promises one-click installation.

Scan the downloaded archive with your normal security tools, preserve the original archive, and avoid running an executable that the project’s instructions do not mention. A batch file supplied with a release is different from an unknown installer: inspect its name and contents if you are comfortable doing so, and do not run it while the game is open.

Prepare a reversible installation
Find the executable directory, not just the library folder
The correct destination is the folder containing the game’s main executable, usually a file ending in .exe. A launcher’s “install location” may open the library root while the executable is several folders deeper.
For an Unreal Engine game, OptiScaler’s guidance commonly points to a path such as Binaries/Win64 or Binaries/WinGDK. That is generally the game’s binary directory, not the separate Unreal Engine folder. The exact path varies by title and store edition, so follow the game-specific executable-location notes in the current wiki.
Do not guess from a similarly named folder. Open the game’s properties in its launcher, use the option that browses local files, and then continue until you can identify the executable that actually starts the game. If the title has separate shipping, development or platform binaries, use the one named by the mod’s compatibility entry.
Create a file manifest and backup
Close the game and its launcher before changing anything. In the executable directory, make a simple text record containing:

- The full path of the directory.
- The game build or executable version.
- The mod name and release version.
- Every file that already existed and will be replaced.
- Every new file the mod adds.
- The original location of each backed-up file.
Copy original files to a separate backup folder outside the game directory. Preserve their names and extensions. If Windows asks for administrator permission when copying, stop and confirm that you are working in the intended game folder; do not grant elevation to an unverified archive.

This manifest is important because there is no universal removal checklist for every DLSS-related mod or game. A file with a familiar name may be part of the game, another mod or the platform runtime. Deleting arbitrary DLLs can prevent the game from launching.
Install OptiScaler
Use this procedure only for an OptiScaler release whose compatibility notes cover your game. The setup batch-file name can vary by title.
- Close the game completely. Exit the game, its launcher if it keeps files open, overlays that inject into the process, and any mod manager that might rewrite the directory.
- Open the verified executable directory. Confirm that the folder contains the game’s main executable and matches the path described by the OptiScaler wiki or compatibility entry. For many Unreal Engine games this is a
Binaries/Win64orBinaries/WinGDKfolder. - Extract the release beside the executable. Do not place OptiScaler in the launcher library root or in the Unreal Engine installation directory unless the title-specific instructions explicitly say so. Keep the archive’s folder structure intact.
- Run the appropriate setup batch file. Use the batch file named for your game or platform in the release. Read any prompts and allow the script to finish before opening the game. The correct filename is release- and game-dependent, so do not substitute a similarly named script from another title.
- Record the result. Add each newly created or replaced file to your manifest. If setup reports an error, do not repeatedly run different scripts or copy random DLLs. Move to the manual-installation instructions in the OptiScaler wiki.
- Launch only in an allowed offline context. Test from the normal launcher and observe whether the game reaches its menu. Do not connect to an online service merely to see whether the mod works.
If OptiScaler’s automated setup fails
Use the manual installation page for the exact game and release. A failure may indicate the wrong executable directory, an unsupported game build, a different graphics API, a permissions problem or a conflict with files left by an older mod. The automated installation page does not provide a universal user-facing uninstall inventory, so keep the files you copied and the script output instead of guessing what to remove.
Install DLSS Enabler
DLSS Enabler has its own file-loading method. Do not apply these steps to OptiScaler.
- Read the current DLSS Enabler instructions for your game. Confirm the supported game build, graphics API and feature. If the game is not listed, treat it as unverified rather than assuming that another title’s procedure applies.
- Close the game and preserve the original state. Complete the manifest and backups described above before copying anything.
- Remove conflicting older files first. The cited DLSS Enabler instructions specifically call out older DLSS Enabler files, LukeFZ mods and dummy
nvapi64.dllfiles. Remove or restore those conflicts only as the current instructions direct; do not delete an arbitrary file with a similar name. - Rename the mod’s single DLL as instructed. The game must recognize the filename expected by its integration. Use the exact spelling and capitalization from the current release notes; do not invent a filename from another game.
- Place the renamed DLL beside the game executable. This is the same executable-directory principle used above. It is not necessarily the folder where the launcher stores game data.
- Record the added file and test offline. Start the game only where modified files are allowed. If it fails to start, close it and restore the previous state before trying another configuration.
Verify the installation without risking your save or account
A successful launch is not proof that every feature works. Use a controlled test:
- Keep a copy of your graphics settings and note the selected upscaler before changing anything.
- Start in an offline save or a practice area where the game rules permit modifications.
- Confirm that the expected overlay, menu option or feature appears, if the project’s instructions specify one.
- Watch for crashes when changing resolution, switching between upscalers, entering a cutscene or loading a saved game.
- Do not interpret a visual change as a measured performance gain. The cited material contains no controlled benchmark for this installation guide.
If the game crashes before the menu, do not keep launching it with different DLL combinations. Close it, restore the backed-up files, and compare your directory with the compatibility entry. A crash can come from a wrong API, an unsupported game update, a conflicting mod or an incorrect file location.

How to remove a DLSS feature mod safely
Use the project’s removal instructions first
Some releases provide an uninstall script or a defined list of files. Use that procedure exactly, with the game closed. The list is mod- and game-specific; there is no reliable universal set of DLL names that can be deleted for every title.

Conservative manual removal
If no removal procedure is supplied, use your manifest rather than memory:
- Exit the game and launcher. Check Task Manager if a game process remains open.
- Open the same executable directory. Do not clean a different copy of the game or a launcher cache.
- Remove only files recorded as mod-added. If a file was present before installation, do not delete it merely because it has a DLSS-related name.
- Restore every backed-up file that the mod replaced. Copy it back with the original filename and preserve its original location.
- Undo configuration changes. Restore any settings or overlay configuration that the mod’s instructions told you to change.
- Launch once in an unmodified, permitted context. Confirm that the game reaches its menu and that the expected native graphics options are back.
This procedure is intentionally conservative. The reviewed OptiScaler installation material does not publish a general cleanup inventory covering every version and game, and the DLSS Enabler instructions identify specific conflicts rather than a universal uninstall list. If you cannot identify whether a file was original, leave it in place and use the recovery route below.
Removing OptiScaler
Follow any removal steps supplied with your exact OptiScaler release. If none are provided, rely on the manifest and backups from your installation. Do not assume that deleting a file named nvapi64.dll, an overlay file or a configuration file is safe: the file may belong to the game or another component. After restoration, compare the directory with the files supplied by the game launcher rather than with a random online archive.
Removing DLSS Enabler
Reverse the current DLSS Enabler instructions. Close the game, remove the renamed mod DLL that you recorded, restore any original file it replaced, and address the older DLSS Enabler, LukeFZ or dummy nvapi64.dll conflicts only as documented for that release. Do not leave two competing proxy DLLs beside the executable.

Restore your known-good backup
Delete only the mod-added files listed in your manifest and copy the originals back. If the game starts afterward, the problem was likely a mod file, conflict or configuration change. Keep the failed files in a separate quarantine folder until you understand what happened; do not mix them back into the game directory.

Use launcher verification or reinstall
If your backup is incomplete, use the game launcher’s file-verification or repair function, or reinstall the game. These are general recovery options, not universal mod-uninstall procedures. Verification may overwrite local modifications and can remove a working mod, so save your manifest and any personal configuration first.
After verification, start the unmodified game once. Only then decide whether to attempt a compatible release again. Reinstalling a game may also reset settings or overwrite local files, so back up saves according to the game’s own documentation before using that option.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game ignores the mod
- Confirm that the DLL is beside the actual executable, not merely in the library root.
- Check that you used the filename and setup method for the current release.
- Verify the title’s graphics API and native upscaler against the compatibility entry.
- Remove competing proxy or dummy DLLs identified by the project’s instructions.
The game crashes immediately
- Restore the original files and test the unmodified game.
- Check for a game update that changed the executable or rendering integration.
- Use the manual OptiScaler instructions rather than rerunning an inappropriate setup script.
- Do not add another mod until the directory is known to be clean.
The mod works offline but the online mode is blocked
Do not bypass anti-cheat or attempt to conceal the modified files. Remove the mod, restore the originals and follow the publisher’s rules. OptiScaler’s own warning specifically identifies potential anti-cheat triggers and bans.
Launcher verification removed the feature
That is expected behavior: verification can restore official files. Keep the compatibility notes and your manifest, then reinstall only from the project’s current instructions if the game and its rules support the mod.
OptiScaler and DLSS Enabler: which approach fits?

Neither project is established by these instructions as universally safer or better. Select based on the game’s explicit compatibility, the feature you need, the graphics API and native upscaler, the release-specific install and removal process, and whether the game is online or anti-cheat protected.
A practical pre-flight checklist
- Exact game title, store edition and current build identified.
- Current compatibility entry read, including caveats and known issues.
- Mod downloaded from the project-identified legitimate location.
- Game executable directory confirmed.
- Game and launcher closed.
- Original files backed up outside the game folder.
- Added and replaced files recorded in a manifest.
- Conflicting older files checked according to the chosen mod’s instructions.
- Online and anti-cheat restrictions understood.
- Removal or recovery plan available before the first launch.
A reversible installation is more valuable than a quick one. If the project’s current notes do not cover your game, if the executable location is uncertain, or if you cannot tell which files are original, stop before copying anything.
