Use Creations for add-ons offered in Starfield’s official in-game catalog, and use Vortex for supported PC mods downloaded from Nexus Mods. They are separate installation routes. The safest workflow is to choose one route per mod, read its current instructions, keep a pre-change save, verify your platform and game path, and restart Starfield completely after changing content or load order.
Creations and Vortex are different mod routes
A Creation is installed from Starfield’s in-game Creations interface. Vortex is a separate Windows mod manager used mainly for supported downloads from Nexus Mods. A mod author’s page determines which route, game build, dependencies and installation steps are valid; do not assume that a file downloaded outside the game belongs in the Creations workflow.

The official Bethesda catalog establishes where Creations are obtained, but its catalog content and policy details can change. Exact prices, exceptions to achievement behavior, console parity and current mod compatibility are not stated here; check the item and the game version you are actually using.
Prepare your PC and a recoverable save
Identify your PC edition first
Before installing anything, decide whether Starfield is installed through Steam or through Xbox/Game Pass for PC. The current Starfield Vortex extension documentation lists support for both, but the installation path and script-extender support differ. SFSE is identified there as Steam-only and currently unsupported on Game Pass. A mod that requires SFSE therefore needs a Steam installation unless its author provides another supported implementation.

Make a pre-change save
- Launch Starfield without changing your current setup.
- Make a clearly named manual save, such as
Before_Mod_Change, and keep it outside your normal rotation. - For a larger mod list, retain an earlier unmodded save as well as a save from the last known-good load order.
- Do not overwrite the only save from a playthrough when testing a new mod, removing a plugin or changing a major load-order position.
If achievements matter, inspect whether a Creation is marked achievement-friendly before enabling it. Starfield Unity’s guide is community guidance rather than an official Bethesda policy statement; it reports that a non-achievement-friendly Creation creates a separate [C] save branch and disables achievements on that branch. Treat the in-game indicator and the Creation’s current description as the authority for your installation.
Record what you install
Keep a short text record containing the mod name, version or download date, dependencies, files placed in the game root, INI changes, and the order in which you enabled it. This makes it possible to undo one change instead of dismantling a working setup.
Install an official Creation
- Start Starfield and open the Creations option from the game’s menu.
- Sign in if the game requests the account used for the catalog, then locate the Creation by its exact title or author.
- Read the Creation’s description, requirements, placement notes and achievement indicator before selecting the install or enable action.
- Enable the Creation and review its position in the game’s load-order screen. If the author specifies that it must load after another Creation or patch, apply that instruction rather than relying on alphabetical order.
- Exit the game completely. Do not leave it suspended in the background while testing a changed Creation list.
- Relaunch Starfield, load the new test save or a copy of your pre-change save, and verify that the content appears as described.
Some Creations can require a particular location, a new game or a new-game-plus start. If the author gives one of those conditions, follow it; moving an item into an existing save does not guarantee that its scripts, quests or locations will initialize correctly.
To remove or disable a Creation, first make another backup save, then follow the author’s removal advice. Removing content that an existing save has already used can leave references behind, so test the change on a copy rather than your only ongoing save.
Set up Vortex for a Steam installation
Install the extension and verify the game path
The current Starfield extension documentation requires Vortex 1.9.10 or later. Install or update Vortex, open its extensions area, install the Starfield extension, and restart Vortex when prompted. Let it detect Starfield, then confirm the path manually. A valid game folder contains Starfield.exe; selecting a parent folder or a shortcut location will prevent deployment.

- Open Vortex and go to the game-selection or managed-games view.
- Select Starfield and allow the Starfield extension to activate.
- Open the detected game path and verify that
Starfield.exeis present in that folder. - If detection is wrong, use the manual folder-selection control and choose the folder that contains the executable.
- Restart Vortex after changing the extension or game path, then confirm that Starfield is still the active managed game.
Install a supported Nexus mod
- Open the mod’s current description page and read its requirements before downloading. Note the required Starfield version, dependencies, incompatibilities, optional files, root-folder files, Data-folder files, INI values and any new-game or new-game-plus requirement.
- Use the mod’s Vortex-supported download option when the author provides one. If the author requires a manual download or a special installer, follow that instruction instead of forcing the archive through Vortex.
- In Vortex, open the Mods page and install the downloaded archive. If Vortex reports that the archive has an unexpected structure, inspect the archive and use the mod author’s stated folder layout; do not guess which nested folder is the correct one.
- Enable the mod only after its dependencies are present. Resolve warnings shown by Vortex before launching the game.
- Click Deploy Mods when Vortex requests deployment, then inspect the deployment result for errors.
- Launch Starfield once with the new mod and test it on a disposable or copied save before continuing your main playthrough.
Vortex’s documentation notes that mod management has edge cases. Avoid editing the same files with several managers or repeatedly copying files into the same Data folder outside Vortex; doing so makes the actual active version difficult to identify and complicates recovery.
Game Pass and Xbox-app installations need extra handling
The default Xbox-app WindowsApps location is access-restricted. The Starfield extension documentation recommends an external Xbox install location when possible, such as C:XboxGames, and says that you may need to select the game folder manually. A documented example is C:XboxGamesStarfieldContent, but the drive and parent folder vary with your chosen Xbox installation location.

- Install or move Starfield to that location and close the Xbox app before changing Vortex’s game path.
- In Vortex, select Starfield manually and choose the folder containing
Starfield.exe; for the example layout, that is theContentfolder. - Confirm that the extension recognizes the game, then install only mods whose authors explicitly support the Xbox/Game Pass build.
SFSE is currently identified by the extension documentation as Steam-only and unsupported on Game Pass. Script-extender-dependent mods therefore need a separate platform check; a mod page that lists SFSE is not automatically usable on the Xbox/Game Pass build.
Vortex also cannot inspect Game Pass save files through its save page by default. That limitation concerns Vortex’s save-inspection feature, not Starfield’s ability to save. Keep manual backups and use the game’s own save interface when managing those saves.
Understand Starfield’s two Data locations before accepting a junction
Starfield can use an ordinary Data folder inside the game installation and a second folder at DocumentsMy GamesStarfieldData. The Vortex extension offers an optional folder-junction approach so the two locations act together for deployment.

What a junction changes
A junction makes one folder path point to another location. It can simplify deployment when a mod expects the other Data path, but it changes how Windows and backup software see the files. Accept it only after you understand which folder will hold the real data and how you will remove the junction if you stop using Vortex.
Cloud-sync warning
The extension documentation warns that cloud-sync software, including OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox, may behave inconsistently with junctions. Severe problems can include data loss. If your Documents folder is synchronized, pause and review the extension’s current compatibility guidance before accepting the junction; keep an independent copy of your saves and mod archives first.
If you already enabled one
- Do not delete either Data folder while the junction relationship is unclear.
- Check which path Vortex reports as the managed or deployment location.
- Back up the actual files and your saves to a location outside the synchronized Documents tree.
- Use Vortex’s documented junction-removal process, then verify the game path and deployment state before launching.
Loose files, plugins and INI settings are separate problems
Loose-file mods
A loose-file mod contains assets that must be read directly rather than loaded as a conventional plugin. Such mods can require values in StarfieldCustom.ini. The Vortex extension can detect missing minimum values for loose-file support and offer to fix them, but that prompt is not a substitute for the mod’s full instructions.
Read the mod description for every required section and value. If you edit StarfieldCustom.ini manually, preserve unrelated settings and record the lines you add. Do not paste a generic INI block into every installation: the required values depend on the mod and its current documentation.
Plugin files
Plugins are managed separately from loose assets. Open Vortex’s Load Order page after enabling a plugin and verify that the plugin is present. Bethesda’s plugin-management system is enabled, so older advice that treats a separate plugin enabler as universally required is outdated for the current documented setup.

Root-folder and special files
Some mods place files beside the game executable rather than in Data. Others require an ASI component or a script extender. Follow the author’s exact install path and platform notes. The extension documentation distinguishes regular Starfield INI handling from ASI-specific INI-merging support mentioned in its changelog; do not infer that ordinary mods receive automatic INI merging.
Build and verify the load order
Manual ordering
On Vortex’s Load Order page, use drag and drop when an author specifies a relationship. A compatibility patch generally belongs after the mods it patches when the author says so. Keep related files together and avoid moving a plugin merely to make the list look alphabetical.
LOOT sorting
The extension documentation describes a LOOT sorting action and an automated LOOT-based option. LOOT sorting requires Vortex 1.12.0 or later according to that documentation. Sorting supplies rules known to the tool; it does not prove that every combination of mods is compatible. After sorting, reapply any author instructions and inspect warnings, conflicts and patches.
What to check before launching
- Every required dependency is enabled and comes from a source the author supports.
- No two mods overwrite the same asset unless the author explains which one should win.
- Compatibility patches load after the files they patch when specified.
- Plugins that require a particular game version or platform are not being used on another build.
- Loose-file INI values and root-folder files were handled separately from plugin order.
Apply changes without damaging a playthrough
Adding content
Add one substantial mod or one tightly related group at a time. Start the game, load a copied test save, and confirm that the expected item, location or system appears. Then make a new manual save before adding the next change.

Read the mod’s uninstall and update notes first. Disable the mod in Vortex or Creations, deploy the change, fully quit Starfield, and test a backup save. A save that has already stored quests, scripts or placed objects from a mod may not become clean simply because the files were removed.

Full shutdown matters
After changing Creations or load order, exit to the desktop and relaunch Starfield. Starfield Unity’s community guide warns that a suspended session can make changed assets appear missing, including textures. A full restart is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that an incompatible mod will work.
Troubleshoot one variable at a time
The game will not start
- Disable the last mod or Creation you changed and deploy the change.
- Check that every dependency is installed and that the mod supports your Steam or Game Pass build.
- Remove or correct any root-folder component that the author says is platform-specific.
- Confirm that Vortex is managing the folder containing
Starfield.exe. - Restart the PC or at least fully exit Vortex and Starfield before testing again.
Assets or textures are missing
- Fully quit and relaunch Starfield; do not test from a suspended session.
- Check whether the mod is a loose-file mod and whether its required
StarfieldCustom.inivalues are present. - Inspect the archive’s folder structure and confirm that files were deployed to the path specified by the author.
- Check overwrite conflicts in Vortex and temporarily disable the most recent conflicting asset mod.
A plugin or quest does not appear
- Verify that the plugin is enabled on Vortex’s Load Order page.
- Check dependencies, required game version and any stated new-game or new-game-plus condition.
- Review the placement of compatibility patches after sorting.
- Test on a new disposable save if the author says the content cannot initialize in an existing game.
INI changes did not take effect
Vortex does not generally merge INI instructions for regular Starfield mods. Compare your file with the mod’s current instructions, preserve the correct section names and values, and remove only the lines belonging to the mod you are testing. Treat ASI-specific merging notes as a separate feature, not as evidence that all INI files are merged automatically.
Vortex cannot see a Game Pass save
This is an identified limitation of Vortex’s save page for Game Pass installations. Use the in-game save menu and your own backup copies rather than trying to repair the issue by changing the mod deployment path.

A repeatable maintenance routine
- Before each change, make a named save and copy important saves outside the game’s normal folders.
- Read the current mod or Creation description, including platform, game-version, dependency and removal notes.
- Change one mod, one dependency chain or one ordering rule at a time.
- Deploy in Vortex, inspect the Load Order page and address warnings before launching.
- Fully quit and relaunch Starfield after Creations or load-order changes.
- Test on a copied save, then keep that save as the rollback point until the change is proven stable.
- When updating Vortex or its Starfield extension, recheck the documented requirements and folder behavior; extension behavior can change as Vortex and Starfield update.
This workflow keeps the two installation routes understandable, limits the number of variables in a failure, and gives you a clean path back to the last known-good setup.
