Get a utility from the Mac App Store whenever possible. If you download it from the web, use the developer’s official site, let macOS perform its security check, read every warning, and grant only permissions that fit the app’s job. Stop when macOS reports known malware, damage, or tampering.
Start with the source, not the installer
Apple describes the App Store as the safest place to get Mac apps because the listing gives you a defined publisher and a controlled distribution channel. That does not make every utility automatically suitable for your privacy or workflow, but it is the lowest-risk starting point.
When the utility is not available there, locate the developer’s official website yourself. Check the domain character by character and confirm that the publisher name, product name, logo, and macOS download all match what you intended to obtain. Avoid unsolicited links, download aggregators, repackaged installers, and sponsored search results that resemble the real site. A lookalike page can deliver a different program even when its download button looks legitimate.

These details establish what you are about to install; they do not certify the developer’s privacy practices or business reputation.
Choose the installation route

A disk image commonly contains an app that you copy to Applications. A package installer runs macOS Installer and can make broader system changes, so read each prompt before authorizing it. Do not follow a request to run an unrelated command or open an unexpected file merely because it appeared alongside the utility.

Install a utility from the Mac App Store
- Open the App Store. Search for the utility by its exact name and compare the publisher shown on the listing with the developer you expected.
- Review the listing before selecting it. Check the supported macOS release, the stated function, privacy information, and recent update or support details. A familiar name is not enough if the publisher differs.
- Select Get, Install, or the listed price. Authenticate with the account or method macOS requests. The app is normally placed in Applications.
- Open it from Applications. macOS may still ask for first-launch confirmation or access to protected locations. Treat those prompts as separate decisions; App Store availability is not a reason to approve every permission automatically.
Install a download from the developer’s website
- Download only from the verified official domain. Save the file and check its name before opening it. A utility should normally arrive as a
.dmgor.pkg; an unexpected file type or an instruction to run an unrelated script is a reason to stop and recheck the source. - Open the downloaded file from Downloads. For a
.dmg, follow the window’s instructions, usually copying the app into Applications. For a.pkg, macOS Installer displays the package’s steps and requests authorization when system changes are needed. - Read installer prompts. Confirm the destination, the publisher information shown by macOS, and any components or privileges requested. Do not approve a prompt that does not fit the utility’s stated purpose.
- Launch the copy in Applications. The first launch is when Gatekeeper normally evaluates software obtained outside the App Store. Read the resulting message instead of repeatedly double-clicking or trying to bypass it.
What Gatekeeper checks—and what it cannot prove
Apple’s Platform Security documentation says that when a user opens an app, plug-in, or installer package obtained outside the App Store, Gatekeeper verifies that it comes from an identified developer, is notarized by Apple for known malicious content, and has not been altered. These checks provide useful evidence about the file you downloaded.
Code signing identifies the signer and detects changes
A valid Developer ID signature helps macOS determine who signed the software and whether the code changed after signing. A matching signature does not establish that the developer is honest, that the app handles data well, or that the utility is appropriate for your needs.

For notarization, Apple receives the submitted software and checks it for known malicious content. A successful result means no known malware was detected at that check. It does not promise that the app is harmless in every future version, free of privacy-invasive behavior, or suitable for every user.

Gatekeeper and XProtect are layers
macOS combines Gatekeeper with other protections, including XProtect. Treat those mechanisms as layers that reduce risk, not as a complete reputation or privacy certification. Continue to evaluate the publisher, requested access, update process, and the way the utility behaves after installation.
Respond to the exact warning you see
“The app was downloaded from the internet” or an identified-developer confirmation
A first-open confirmation for an identified developer is a normal macOS checkpoint. Confirm that the product and publisher match the download you intended, then choose to open it only if you are comfortable with the source. A confirmation dialog is not the same as a malware finding.
“Apple cannot check the app for malicious software”
This means macOS cannot complete the normal verification for that app; it is not a statement that malware was found, and it is not proof that the app is safe. Apple’s recommended responses are to contact the developer, look for an App Store version, or choose an alternative with verifiable distribution. If you proceed, first establish that the file came from the developer’s genuine site and that it has not been tampered with.

“The developer cannot be verified”
macOS cannot establish the expected developer identity for the app. Do not treat this as an invitation to keep trying. Verify the source independently and look for a supported App Store release or another utility. If you are certain of both the source and the file’s integrity, macOS may provide a per-app exception in System Settings, but that exception is a deliberate risk decision, not a replacement for Gatekeeper.
Using “Open Anyway” as a narrow exception
When Apple documents an override for an app you trust, open System Settings > Privacy & Security and look in the Security section for the option to allow that particular app to open. Use it only after confirming the official source and that the download has not been altered. This does not turn off Gatekeeper globally. A Mac managed by an employer or school may hide or restrict this control.
“The app will damage your computer,” known malware, or “the app is damaged”
Stop. Do not use Open Anyway, disable protections, or search for a workaround that suppresses the warning. Remove the download and obtain advice from the developer through its verified site or from your administrator. A damage or malware warning can indicate malicious code, a revoked authorization, corruption, or tampering; the message is a stop signal until the source and file are independently resolved.

Review permissions in context
macOS asks for consent when an app wants access to protected locations or powerful control features. Manage these requests in System Settings > Privacy & Security. The exact category names and available controls vary by macOS version and may be restricted on a managed Mac.

Grant the smallest access that lets the utility perform its stated function. A request from a file organizer for selected folders may be expected; an unrelated utility asking for broad file access, Accessibility, or Automation deserves a clear explanation before approval. If the explanation is missing or does not match the feature you need, deny the request and reassess the app.

Confirm identity and purpose
Check the publisher name in the app’s About window, its signed identity in macOS prompts, and the developer documentation. The name should be consistent with the site and the installer. Make sure the utility actually performs the task you downloaded it for rather than presenting unrelated offers or asking for unrelated access.

Check maintenance and support
Look for a clear way to obtain updates, release information, and support. A utility that has no identifiable maintainer, no current compatibility information, or no documented way to report problems is harder to evaluate and remove safely. An update channel is not automatically trustworthy; verify that future downloads come from the same official source.
Read privacy terms against the permissions
Compare the data practices described by the developer with the access you granted. A utility that can read documents, control other apps, or observe interface activity should explain what it collects, why it needs that access, how long it keeps data, and whether processing occurs locally or remotely. Apple’s security prompts establish consent; they do not evaluate the developer’s privacy policy for you.
Start with a limited, observable task
Use the utility first on non-sensitive files and watch which prompts appear. Decline optional access until a feature genuinely requires it. If the app behaves differently from its documentation, repeatedly asks for unrelated privileges, or creates unexpected login items or background components, stop using it and consult the developer’s removal instructions.
App Store release or direct download?
Neither route answers every trust question. Use the following comparison before choosing between two legitimate distribution options for the same utility.

Remove a utility without leaving surprises
- Check for an official uninstaller. Some utilities provide one in the app folder, a menu item, or the developer’s documentation. Use it when supplied, especially for installer-based utilities.
- Quit the app and related processes. Close its windows and stop any active operation before removal.
- For an ordinary app, remove the Applications copy. In Finder, open Applications, move the app to the Bin or Trash, and authenticate if macOS asks.
- Follow the developer’s cleanup instructions for packages. A package-installed utility may add background processes, extensions, login items, or saved data that are not removed by dragging the visible app to the Bin.
- Revisit privacy permissions. After uninstalling, remove any remaining Files and Folders, Full Disk Access, Accessibility, or Automation entries associated with the utility.
Do not delete system files or use a generic cleanup command simply because a utility left a folder behind. If the developer does not document what its installer changed, ask for removal instructions before deleting components manually.
A practical decision checklist
- Did you obtain the app from the Mac App Store or the developer’s verified official domain?
- Does the publisher name match across the listing, website, installer, and macOS prompt?
- Is the download an expected
.dmgor.pkg, and do its instructions match the product? - Did Gatekeeper identify the developer, confirm notarization, and report that the app was not altered?
- If macOS could not check or verify the app, did you seek an App Store version or developer explanation before considering a per-app exception?
- Did macOS report damage or known malware? If so, did you stop rather than override the warning?
- Does every requested permission—especially Accessibility, Automation, or broad file access—fit a documented feature?
- Can you identify the app’s update, support, privacy, and uninstall paths?
If any answer is unclear, postpone installation. A utility is not worth weakening the Mac’s protections or granting unexplained control over your files and other applications.
