On a Windows 11 Arm-based PC, install an x86 app much as you would on any Windows computer: use Microsoft Store or the publisher’s installer, then let Windows emulate the app if no Arm64 build exists. Native Arm64 software is usually faster and more efficient. Compatibility is not universal, however. Drivers, specialized peripherals, and some game anti-cheat components must support Arm separately, and Windows 10 has narrower architecture support than Windows 11.
What happens when you run an x86 app on an Arm PC?
Arm and x86 are different processor architectures. A program compiled for x86 cannot execute directly on an Arm processor, so Windows on Arm uses one of two paths:
- Native Arm64 execution: The publisher has rebuilt the app for Arm64. Windows runs it directly on the processor, normally giving the best performance, battery life, and compatibility.
- Emulated x86 execution: Windows translates instructions while the x86 program runs. This allows many traditional Windows applications to work without a native Arm build, but performance and feature support depend on the app and the Windows release.
Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ states that you can install and run most Windows apps on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs in the same general way as on other Windows 11 PCs. The app does not have to be listed in Microsoft Store. You can download a conventional installer from the software publisher, provided the program and its dependencies are compatible.
Emulation applies to the application itself, not automatically to every component it uses. An app may open successfully while a printer, scanner, security token, kernel driver, game anti-cheat module, or other hardware integration fails. Treat the application and its supporting components as separate compatibility checks.

Check compatibility before downloading
Identify your Windows edition and release
First establish whether the computer is running Windows 10 or Windows 11 on Arm. Microsoft documents materially different architecture support for the two versions. You can view the Windows edition and version in Settings > System > About. Record the edition, version, and device model before relying on a publisher’s compatibility statement.
Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Microsoft’s Prism emulation technology on Arm devices. Microsoft describes Prism as improving performance for emulated applications, but the result still depends on the current Windows build, the processor, memory, and the application. A Windows update can also change compatibility, so check the release supported by the publisher rather than assuming that every Windows 11 Arm computer behaves identically.
Look for an Arm64 build first
Visit the application publisher’s official download or system-requirements page and look for labels such as Windows on Arm, Arm64, or ARM64. An Arm64 installer is the preferred path. Some publishers offer one installer that selects the correct architecture automatically; others provide separate x86, x64, and Arm64 downloads.
If the publisher offers only an x86 installer, check that it supports Windows on Arm or Windows 11 before installing. Do not infer compatibility solely from the fact that the program is a familiar Windows application. Older utilities, software that installs a driver, and applications tied to specialized hardware need additional confirmation.

Classify what the app needs
Ask whether the program is entirely user-mode software or whether it integrates with the operating system or a device. This distinction predicts many failures:

Choose a safe installer
Microsoft Store
If the app is available in Microsoft Store, installing it there is the simplest route. Store distribution can select a package appropriate for the device and provides an update path through the Store. Open the app’s listing, read the system requirements and publisher name, and confirm that the listing is the genuine application before selecting Get or Install.
A Store listing is not an absolute guarantee that every feature works on every Arm computer. Read notes about required devices, drivers, services, or editions. After installation, use Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates to check for a current package when troubleshooting.

For apps not listed in Store, download the installer from the publisher’s official website. Choose the Windows installer and, where offered, select Arm64. If only x86 is available, verify the publisher’s Windows on Arm guidance and the minimum Windows version before downloading.

Avoid repackaged installers from download portals when the publisher provides a direct download. An installer can be authentic yet still bundle a driver or service that has no Arm64 version, so read the publisher’s requirements rather than relying on the file name alone.
Step-by-step: install an x86 app on Windows on Arm
- Confirm the platform. In Settings > System > About, note Windows 10 or Windows 11, the version, and the Arm-based device model. This determines which architecture claims apply.
- Check the publisher’s architecture options. Prefer an Arm64 build. If none exists, look for an explicit statement that the x86 build runs on Windows on Arm. Check whether the app needs a driver, plug-in, service, anti-cheat module, or named peripheral.
- Select a trusted source. Use Microsoft Store when the app is listed there. Otherwise download from the publisher’s official site, not an unverified mirror.
- Update Windows first. Install pending Windows updates and restart if requested. This is particularly important on Windows 11 24H2 devices, where the Prism emulator is part of the operating-system release.
- Run the installer normally. Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts. Windows can emulate many non-native x86 applications automatically; you do not need to enable a separate “x86 mode.” Accept only components you need, and pay attention to any driver or hardware-support notice.
- Restart when the installer requires it. A restart may be needed for a service or driver, but it cannot make an x86-only driver compatible with Arm.
- Launch a basic workflow first. Open the program, sign in if required, and test the functions you actually need. Check file import/export, printing, audio or camera access, plug-ins, and any hardware connection separately.
- Record the result. Note the app version, Windows version, and whether the build is Arm64 or x86. This information makes a publisher support request much more effective if a later update introduces a problem.
Native Arm64 versus emulated x86
Both paths can be useful, but they solve different problems. Native Arm64 is the performance path; emulation is the compatibility path when a publisher has not rebuilt the software.

Windows 11 version 24H2’s Prism emulator is intended to improve emulated-app performance. Microsoft presents it as an operating-system capability, not as a promise that every x86 application or component will work. Heavy workloads, timing-sensitive software, and applications that call unsupported system components can still behave differently from an x86 PC.
Drivers, peripherals, and anti-cheat are separate compatibility boundaries
An application that only reads and writes files may work under emulation while a feature that talks to hardware does not. Windows on Arm needs an Arm-compatible driver supplied either in Windows or by the device manufacturer. An x86 driver cannot be made compatible simply by launching the application through emulation.

When a peripheral fails
- Check the printer, scanner, camera, audio-device, storage-device, or accessory manufacturer’s support page for an Arm64 driver.
- Connect the device and run Windows Update; relevant driver updates may be delivered there.
- Test the device with a built-in Windows function to determine whether the problem is the driver or the application’s integration.
- If the manufacturer lists only x86 or x64 drivers, ask whether an Arm64 release is planned. Do not install an architecture-incompatible driver from an unofficial source.
When a game or protected app fails
Some games and security-sensitive applications use anti-cheat or other low-level components. Microsoft lists unsupported anti-cheat components among the reasons an app may not work fully on Windows 11 Arm. The game executable may install and start while online play or protected modes remain unavailable. Check the game publisher’s current Windows on Arm statement and the anti-cheat provider’s requirements before changing system settings.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 on Arm are not equivalent
Do not carry a Windows 11 compatibility claim over to Windows 10. Microsoft’s Windows 10 on Arm FAQ says that Windows 10 supports 32-bit x86 applications and Arm64 applications, but not 64-bit x64 applications.

If a publisher lists only an x64 build, verify support for your exact Windows 11 Arm device and release. If you are on Windows 10, treat an x64-only application as unsupported unless Microsoft and the publisher document a newer supported configuration.

The installer refuses to run
Recheck the Windows version and the installer architecture. Look for an Arm64 or x86 Windows package rather than a package for another operating system or processor. Download a fresh copy from Microsoft Store or the publisher. If the app is x64-only and the computer is running Windows 10 on Arm, the documented architecture limitation explains the failure.

The app installs but will not launch
- Restart Windows and try again.
- Check the publisher’s site for a newer release and review its Windows on Arm notes.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Review the app’s requirements for services, plug-ins, security software, or drivers that may lack Arm support.
The compatibility troubleshooter can apply generic Windows compatibility settings; it cannot supply a missing Arm64 driver or rewrite an unsupported kernel component.
The app launches but a feature is missing
Separate the failing feature from the main program. Test without the peripheral or plug-in, then check that component’s manufacturer for an Arm64 driver or Arm-supported release. For printing, scanning, audio, cameras, storage encryption, VPNs, and similar functions, the component may be the incompatibility even when the application itself is running correctly.
The app became unstable after an update
Check both update channels: use Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates for Store software, and the publisher’s website for conventional installers. Note the app and Windows versions, then report the failure to the publisher. Updating drivers through Windows Update can resolve a device issue, but do not assume a driver update exists for every accessory.
Use this decision sequence before committing the app to an important workflow: For a low-risk utility, an emulated x86 build may be entirely adequate. For sustained rendering, engineering, media production, large data processing, or battery-sensitive work, a native Arm64 release is the better long-term choice when one exists. For driver-dependent software, the decisive question is not whether the executable launches but whether every required component has Arm64 support.
