First check what your Humble purchase includes: a Steam key, a downloadable game build, or another title-specific entitlement. Redeem a Steam key to install the game from your Steam library. If Humble offers a standalone build, install it in Desktop Mode and add its executable to Steam as a non-Steam game to launch it from the Deck interface. These routes are different, and neither guarantees that every game, launcher, or login flow will work on Steam Deck.
Choose the installation route that matches your Humble entitlement
Humble purchases do not all provide the same files or redemption options. Open the purchase page in your Humble account and inspect the entitlement for the specific game before you begin. Look for a Steam key if you want a Steam-library installation, or for downloadable builds if you intend to install a standalone copy. Do not assume that a Humble purchase always includes either format, a Linux build, or a DRM-free installer.
The entitlement tells you which installation route is available; it does not, by itself, tell you how well the game will run on the Deck. A Steam key lets you add the title to the Steam account you choose, while a standalone download gives you files to install according to that title’s instructions. If the purchase page lists another arrangement, follow the instructions attached to that entitlement rather than trying to force it into either route. Confirm the account and file options before spending time setting up an installer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The distinction matters after installation. A redeemed key adds the game to the Steam account you choose and lets you install that library copy through Steam. A standalone installation is a local copy that you can launch by adding its application to Steam as a shortcut. Valve says a non-Steam shortcut does not make the game a Steam purchase, provide Steam downloads or updates for it, or establish it as proof of ownership for the Steam account. Valve’s explanation of non-Steam library entries spells out that limitation.

Get ready in Desktop Mode
Desktop Mode gives you a PC-like environment for browsing, downloading, and installing applications. On the Deck, press the Steam button, choose Power, then select Switch to Desktop. Valve documents this route and the available desktop controls in its Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop FAQ.
- Use the right trackpad as the primary-click mouse and the left trackpad as the secondary-click mouse. Press Steam+X to open the on-screen keyboard while Steam is running.
- A physical keyboard and mouse can make text entry and installer navigation easier. Valve notes that some situations may require them, but they are not a general prerequisite for installing a game.
- To return to the normal Deck interface, use the desktop’s link to return to Gaming Mode.
For desktop applications, Valve describes the Discover Software Center as installing applications through Flatpak on writable storage. Valve warns that software installed outside Flatpak, such as with pacman, may be removed by a SteamOS update. A game installer may have its own requirements, but avoid system-level changes unless the game’s documented setup genuinely calls for them and you understand the maintenance risk. A dock or USB-C hub is optional; it can provide convenient connections for peripherals, but the installation routes below do not require one.
Desktop Mode is where you handle the browser-based Humble download and any standalone setup; Gaming Mode is where you can launch the finished game from its Steam entry. If you are using only a Steam key, Desktop Mode is not required just to redeem and install the library game. It is useful when you need a browser or desktop tools, but you can still return to the Deck interface whenever you want to test a game.

- Check the Humble purchase. Sign in to your Humble account, open the purchase’s redemption page, and confirm that the game actually includes a Steam key. The purchase being from Humble is not enough to establish that it can be redeemed on Steam.
- Redeem the key to the intended Steam account. In the Steam client, use the product activation option and follow its prompts. Make sure you are signed into the account where you want the game to be available. This is not the same as adding a non-Steam shortcut: Valve documents that shortcut process separately, and it does not redeem a key. See Valve’s non-Steam game instructions.
- Install from the Steam library. Find the redeemed title in your library and install it through Steam. The game’s library listing is the copy Steam will manage; do not install a separate standalone copy unless you specifically want that version.
- Check its current Deck status. Look at the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating, then treat the rating as guidance rather than a guarantee about every play session or configuration. Valve’s categories are Verified, Playable, and Unsupported, and ratings can change. Its Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide explains the ratings and troubleshooting options.
- Launch and test the whole experience. Check not only whether the game opens, but also whether you can get through any launcher or login, use the controls you need, and reach the game itself. A successful install alone does not verify those parts.
When to try a compatibility setting
If a Steam-library game needs troubleshooting, open its Steam library page, select the gear icon, choose Properties, then open Compatibility. Where appropriate, enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool and try a Proton version. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance recommends trying the latest Proton option in relevant cases; it does not mean that every problem should be solved by forcing Proton or that every title will work.
Forcing a compatibility tool can have a side effect: Valve notes that Steam may download the Windows version of a game in a case where only its Linux version had been installed. If the behavior changes or the download is unexpectedly large, check which build Steam is installing before assuming something is broken. Compatibility results also depend on the individual game and its configuration, so test the title after changing the setting. Steamworks’ Proton documentation describes Proton as a compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux; that general capability is not a promise that a particular game, DRM system, or launcher will work.
Rank #2
Changing this setting is a troubleshooting test, not a requirement for every Steam game. If the game already launches and behaves as expected, there is no need to force a different compatibility tool simply because the game came from Humble. If you do change it, make one change at a time and retest the same part of the game—such as startup or the launcher sign-in—so you can tell whether the setting helped. The game’s individual behavior remains the deciding evidence.
Route B: install a standalone download
- Open the game’s download page. Switch to Desktop Mode, sign in to your Humble account in a browser, and open the title’s download page. Inspect the operating-system and build choices actually offered for this game. Availability varies by title: do not assume there is a Linux version, a Windows installer, or a DRM-free build.
- Choose a usable build. Select the build that matches the game’s documented installation instructions and the kind of setup you intend to try. If the page offers several operating systems, a download is not automatically compatible with SteamOS just because it is available. For a Windows-only build, Proton may be an option to try after installation, but success depends on the game and its requirements.
- Download and install according to the publisher’s instructions. Run the downloaded installer or follow the supplied setup steps. The exact process, file locations, and launcher behavior are title-specific. For example, Klei’s instructions for its own DRM-free client describe opening a Humble Store download page, selecting the operating system, downloading the standalone installer, and then installing and running it. That example is not a universal installer procedure for other Humble games. Klei’s instructions, updated May 22, 2025, apply to its documented client.
- Add the installed application to Steam. Open the desktop Steam client and choose Add a Game > Add a Non-Steam Game. Select the installed application or executable and confirm. Valve says the entry will appear in the Deck interface under the non-Steam tab. The shortcut points to the application on the Deck; it does not install the game for you.
- Return to Gaming Mode and test the shortcut. Find the new entry under the non-Steam tab and launch it. Check whether the game opens, whether its controls work for you, and whether any launcher or sign-in step prevents play. If the build is Windows-only, try a compatibility tool for that shortcut if available and appropriate, then test again.
For the add-to-Steam step, make sure you select the installed application or executable, rather than the downloaded installer if your aim is to launch the installed game. The shortcut is an entry point to the local application. It is not a second installation process, and adding it does not confirm that the title is compatible. If you are unsure which file the publisher’s instructions identify as the game to run, follow those instructions rather than guessing from filenames.
What the shortcut does—and does not do
A non-Steam entry gives you a way to launch an installed application from the Steam interface. It does not turn that application into a Steam-library purchase or make Steam responsible for the game’s files and updates. For an update, use the publisher’s updater or return to the game’s original download source and follow that title’s instructions. This distinction is important if you later remove the shortcut: removing a library entry and uninstalling the underlying game are not necessarily the same operation.
Valve’s wording is explicit: adding a non-Steam game “will only add a shortcut” in the Steam client. It does not enable Steam downloads for the game or make it proof of ownership for the Steam account. This is why the two routes should not be treated as interchangeable even though both can produce something you launch from Steam. A standalone game can appear alongside library games in the interface without becoming a Steam entitlement.
Check compatibility before spending time troubleshooting
Start with the route the game uses, because Steam’s compatibility information is most directly useful for a Steam-library title. For that copy, check the current Deck rating and then test the actual game. Valve describes Verified as a title that works great by default, Playable as one that may require manual configuration, and Unsupported as one not currently considered playable. A rating describes Valve’s current classification; it does not establish that every update, launcher, or account flow will behave identically.

For a standalone app, the non-Steam shortcut does not give it the same status as a Steam library game. Consider what build you installed, whether the software supports Arch Linux, and whether a Windows executable can be attempted with Proton. Valve’s guidance for non-Steam software may be limited, and Proton’s general purpose does not resolve title-specific problems. Compatibility can depend on the game, launcher, DRM, and configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese checks answer different questions. A Steam Deck rating is Valve’s assessment for a listed Steam game; it is not a rating automatically attached to every copy of the same title installed from another source. Proton is a way to run Windows games on Linux, not a guarantee of support for a particular standalone installer or its DRM. A title can install yet fail at a launcher, login, anti-cheat, or control step, so test the part that matters to your intended play rather than stopping at a successful download.
- The game installs but will not open: Confirm that you selected the intended installed application or executable for a non-Steam shortcut. For a Windows build, a Proton attempt may be relevant; check the game or publisher’s guidance if it still fails.
- A launcher or login blocks play: Look for support instructions from the game’s publisher. There is no single Humble-wide fix established for launcher, account, or DRM failures.
- Performance or graphics are unstable: If the game starts but runs poorly, try adjusting its graphics settings. For Steam-library games, consult Valve’s troubleshooting steps before changing compatibility options.
- The Deck has broader system problems: Valve recommends checking for SteamOS updates and restarting as initial troubleshooting steps. Do that before treating a general system issue as a problem with one Humble entitlement.
Valve’s software and troubleshooting guide covers Deck ratings, compatibility settings, and general troubleshooting. For how Proton is intended to work, consult the Steamworks Proton documentation.
Keep the two copies and their updates straight
If a title offers both a key and a standalone build, decide which copy you want to use before installing both. The Steam-key copy is installed and updated through the Steam library. A standalone copy is installed from its download or publisher workflow, and its maintenance depends on that title’s instructions. Installing both can leave separate files and library entries, so use clear names when adding shortcuts and verify which copy you launch.
Likewise, adding a shortcut is not a way to make a standalone game eligible for Steam downloads or updates. Valve explicitly limits non-Steam entries to shortcuts. If you want Steam to manage the game as a library title, you need a valid Steam entitlement and must redeem it to your account; a local executable alone does not provide that entitlement.

There is no single update schedule or updater process for standalone Humble builds established across all titles. Check the publisher’s instructions for that specific game. If you have installed both versions, also check which version you are opening before troubleshooting a missing update or different settings; a Steam library copy and a local standalone copy follow different maintenance paths.

- Open the Humble purchase and identify the actual entitlement.
- If it includes a Steam key, redeem it to the intended account, install from the Steam library, and check the current Deck rating.
- If there is a usable standalone build instead, install it in Desktop Mode using the title’s instructions and add the installed application as a non-Steam game.
- Test the game in Gaming Mode, including any launcher, login, and controls you need.
- For a compatibility problem, use the relevant Valve troubleshooting guidance; try Proton only where appropriate and verify the result for that title.
The fastest route is usually the one that matches the entitlement you actually have. A Steam key means a Steam library install; an available standalone build means following its publisher’s setup and adding the installed program as a shortcut if you want to launch it from Steam. In both cases, verify the game itself on the Deck rather than assuming that entitlement or installation alone establishes compatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Humble Bundle game include a Steam key?
No. Entitlements vary by purchase. Open that game’s Humble purchase or redemption page and confirm whether it lists a redeemable Steam key, standalone files, or another arrangement before choosing an install route.
Can I add a Humble standalone game to Steam and update it there?
You can add its installed application as a non-Steam shortcut so it appears in the Deck interface. The shortcut does not make the game a Steam purchase or let Steam download its updates. Use the publisher’s updater or the original download source, following that game’s instructions.
Can I run a Windows-only Humble download on Steam Deck?
You can try a Windows executable with Proton, Steam’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux, where the option is available. Results depend on the specific game, launcher, DRM, and configuration, so test the title rather than assuming it will work.

- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Do I need a keyboard, mouse, or dock to install a Humble game?
No general requirement for those accessories is established for these steps. The Deck’s trackpads can act as mouse controls, and Steam+X opens the on-screen keyboard while Steam is running. Valve notes that some situations may call for a physical keyboard and mouse; a dock or USB-C hub is optional.
Why did Steam download a Windows version after I forced Proton?
Valve notes that forcing a compatibility tool can cause Steam to download a Windows version in a case where only the Linux version was installed. Check which build Steam is selecting before assuming the download is an error.
Does a Verified rating guarantee every launcher or login will work?
No rating should be treated as a guarantee for every configuration or account flow. Valve’s categories describe its current Deck compatibility assessment; test the game itself, including any launcher, login, and controls you need.
