You can launch an installed Windows application from Steam on Linux by adding its executable as a non-Steam shortcut and selecting a Proton compatibility tool for that shortcut. Proton is designed primarily for Windows games, so a desktop application is a case-by-case experiment rather than a guaranteed installation method. Steam adds a shortcut; it does not install the application, supply updates, or verify ownership.
What this method does—and what it does not
Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for the Steam client. It uses Wine and related components to translate many Windows program calls so that Windows-exclusive games can run on Linux. Steam exposes Proton through its Steam Play compatibility settings.
A non-Steam shortcut uses the same Steam launch framework, but Valve’s official description and support material focus on games. A Windows desktop application may work, work only partially, or fail because of a missing Windows service, driver, DRM component, graphics API, installer assumption, or other application-specific dependency. No general Proton setting can guarantee compatibility for an unnamed application.

Steam Support describes the result plainly: “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” For an application, that means a library entry that starts the executable. The application remains your responsibility to install and update.

Before you begin
- A Linux installation with the Steam client: The menu names below are based on the desktop Steam client. SteamOS and individual Linux distributions can present slightly different labels.
- An application that is already installed, or an installer you can run in a compatible environment: The official non-Steam shortcut workflow documents selecting an executable; it does not document a universal procedure for installing arbitrary Windows installers.
- The main executable: You need the
.exefile that actually starts the application, not necessarily the setup file, updater, uninstaller, or a launcher that immediately hands off to another process. - Enough disk space and access to the application’s files: Proton creates a Windows-style prefix and may need to write configuration, cache, and first-run data.
- A backup of important application data: Compatibility experiments can leave settings or user data in a prefix. Keep copies of documents and configuration you cannot replace.
If the vendor provides a native Linux build, that is normally the more predictable choice. Use Proton when the Windows build is the one you need and you accept that support depends on the particular application and version.
Install the Windows application on Linux
When a Linux version exists
Install the native Linux release using the vendor’s documented package, archive, or distribution method, then add its Linux executable to Steam only if you want Steam’s library launch, controller, overlay, or other management features. Proton is not required for a native Linux binary.
When only a Windows installer exists
There is no single Proton installer procedure that works for every desktop application. The Windows setup program must run inside a Windows-compatible environment, and the installed program must remain in the same environment when you launch it later. Some installers create services, registry entries, shell integrations, or drivers that Proton cannot provide.
If you use Steam to run an installer, treat that as an application-specific workaround rather than an official guarantee. Add the installer executable as a non-Steam shortcut, force a Proton tool for that shortcut, run the installer, and then identify the executable that the installer placed in the prefix. Replace the shortcut’s target with that installed executable before normal use. The exact location depends on the application, Steam library, Proton version, and whether the installer uses a launcher.
Do not assume that running the installer once makes the application available to every Proton prefix. The installer and the final executable need to use the same prefix and compatible environment. If you cannot determine which executable or prefix the installer used, consult the application’s own documentation rather than guessing a path.

Add the installed executable to Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in.
- Choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library. On Steam Deck desktop mode, use the Add a Game button and choose Add a Non-Steam Game.
- In the program list, select the application if it appears. If it does not, choose Browse and navigate to the executable.
- Select the correct
.exefile and choose Add Selected Programs. - Open the Library and find the new shortcut. Steam may display the executable’s filename; you can rename the entry later.
This procedure creates a shortcut only. It does not copy the application into Steam, provide Steam-managed updates, add a license, or establish that the application is supported by Proton.
Choose the executable carefully
- Prefer the application’s main executable over
setup.exe,uninstall.exe, a crash reporter, or an updater. - If the application normally starts through a launcher, the launcher may be the correct target, but it may also depend on services or paths that do not work under Proton.
- If the executable is moved after you add it, edit the shortcut or remove and add it again so Steam points to the new location.
- Keep the application’s supporting files together. Selecting an executable without its installed resources can produce an immediate failure that looks like a Proton problem.
Force Proton for the non-Steam shortcut
- In the Steam Library, right-click the shortcut (or select its gear menu) and open Properties.
- Look for a Compatibility section or a Steam Play compatibility option. Steam’s labels and layout change between client versions, so the exact checkbox wording may differ.
- Enable the option that forces the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a Proton version from the available list. For most users, start with the Proton build supplied by Steam rather than a locally installed build.
- Close the Properties window and select Play from the Library entry.
If no Proton choices appear, confirm that Steam Play compatibility tools are enabled in Steam’s general settings, restart Steam, and check that the shortcut is still present. A missing option can also mean that the client has not detected a locally installed tool.

For an application that has several executables, apply the compatibility setting to the shortcut you actually launch. Setting Proton on one shortcut does not automatically configure another shortcut pointing to a different executable.
Steam Deck considerations
In Steam Deck desktop mode, the workflow is the same in principle: choose Add a Game, select Add a Non-Steam Game, and browse to the installed application. Steam notes that some desktop-mode tasks are easier with a physical keyboard and mouse. Those peripherals are convenience items, not prerequisites for the general shortcut method.
After adding the shortcut, return to the Deck’s Library view, open the shortcut’s Properties, and configure its compatibility tool there. The Deck’s gaming-mode interface and desktop-mode interface can expose different controls, so use desktop mode when the file browser or compatibility options are not available in gaming mode.

Run the application and handle first-launch behavior
The first launch can take longer while Proton creates a prefix, installs its Windows compatibility components, or builds shader and application caches. A window may appear behind Steam, or the application may open only after a launcher completes. Wait for the process to finish before assuming that a short delay is a failure.
If the application opens, test the functions you actually need: file import and export, printing, hardware access, account sign-in, updates, audio, graphics acceleration, and any plug-ins. A successful window does not prove that every feature works.
Do not move the executable or its data directories while troubleshooting. Establish a working baseline first, then change one variable at a time: the executable, Proton version, launch option, or application setting. This makes it possible to identify which change affected the result.
Use a custom Proton build
Steam supplies Proton builds for most users. A custom local build is useful only when you have a specific compatibility reason and a build from a source you trust. It adds another variable, so test the Steam-provided build first.
- Obtain the redistributable custom Proton build according to that build’s documentation.
- Create a directory for custom compatibility tools under
~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. - Place the build in its own clearly named directory beneath that location. Keep the expected directory structure intact; do not flatten or rename files arbitrarily.
- Restart Steam so the client rescans the compatibility-tools directory.
- Open the shortcut’s Properties, enable the forced compatibility-tool option, and select the newly detected build.
- Launch the application and record whether the change improves or worsens the behavior.

Do not rank Proton versions for an application without testing that application. A newer version is not automatically better for every program, and a custom build can introduce regressions that are unrelated to your shortcut configuration.

Troubleshoot a shortcut that will not launch
1. Confirm the target and tool
Reopen Properties and verify that the shortcut still points to the intended executable. Make sure the forced compatibility option is enabled and that the selected Proton tool remains installed and available. If the application was moved, browse to its new location and update the shortcut.
2. Separate an application failure from a Proton failure
Try launching the executable in the environment and manner recommended by the application’s documentation. If the program requires a background service, driver, licensing component, or hardware integration that is unavailable on Linux, changing Proton versions may not solve it. Because the application is unspecified, there is no universal cause or fix for an immediate exit.
3. Capture a Proton log
To request a log, open the shortcut’s Properties and add this launch option exactly:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%The Proton FAQ documents logs at $HOME/steam-$STEAM_APP_ID.log, with a later run overwriting a previous log with the same name. That FAQ is dated January 2020, so treat the filename convention as historical guidance; if your current client behaves differently, consult the current Proton documentation and look for the log created by the launch.
Remove the option after collecting the information you need. A log setting does not repair the application; it only records diagnostic output.

4. Test the alternate renderer option
For Direct3D 9, 10, or 11 applications that fail with the normal Vulkan-based translation path, you can test the OpenGL-based wined3d path with:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a guaranteed performance improvement. It may reduce performance or introduce different graphics problems. Proton treats launch-option overrides as runtime settings: remove the option to return to the previous behavior, without permanently changing the Wine prefix.
5. Interpret prefix paths cautiously
The Proton FAQ describes prefixes in a Steam library under steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/. That path is useful when a diagnostic guide specifically asks you to inspect a prefix, but it is not a guarantee for every current non-Steam shortcut. Library location, client version, and shortcut configuration can change the effective path. Do not delete a prefix or edit registry files until you know which shortcut and library it belongs to and have backed up required data.
Common pitfalls
- Adding the installer instead of the application: The shortcut repeatedly starts setup or an updater. Replace the target with the installed program’s actual executable.
- Assuming Steam will update the app: A non-Steam entry has no Steam ownership or update relationship. Use the application’s own update mechanism when it works under Proton, or install updates using the vendor’s documented method.
- Changing several variables at once: Switching executable, Proton version, renderer, and launch options together makes the result impossible to diagnose. Change one item, test, and record the outcome.
- Expecting every Windows feature to work: A window opening does not establish that services, drivers, plug-ins, printing, authentication, or hardware acceleration are supported.
- Assuming a custom tool is automatically detected: Steam must be restarted after a local build is placed in
~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. If it still does not appear, verify the directory name and build structure against that tool’s documentation. - Using an old diagnostic claim as a current guarantee: Proton’s logs, prefix handling, and Steam’s interface evolve. Treat the dated FAQ’s path and filename as guidance, not a promise that every current setup is identical.
What to expect after setup
Your final result is a Steam Library shortcut that starts a Windows executable through the selected Proton tool. The quality of that result is application-specific. Keep the shortcut’s target, Proton selection, and any working launch options documented so you can restore them after a Steam or application update.
If the application is business-critical, requires Windows-only drivers or services, or fails essential functions after troubleshooting, use a supported native Linux release, a full Windows installation, or another officially supported environment instead of treating Proton as a guarantee. Proton is valuable because it can make many Windows programs usable on Linux, but the non-Steam workflow remains an experiment whose success must be judged by the particular application and the features you need.
