On Steam Deck, the “DLSS 3.7 mod” is HelixSR, an unofficial per-game upscaler. It runs NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E super-resolution network on supported AMD hardware through Direct3D 12 compute shaders, but it does not add DLSS frame generation. Install it only through the project’s current Linux/Proton setup, let the installer choose a route for each game, keep the game closed while patching, and use HelixSR’s uninstaller to restore files.
What the Steam Deck DLSS 3.7 mod actually is
HelixSR is a drop-in implementation that exposes NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E network through an FSR 3.1-style path. The project says it runs on AMD GPUs with Direct3D 12 compute shaders and does not require NVIDIA Tensor Cores, an NVIDIA driver, CUDA, or ROCm. It is an independent, unofficial project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NVIDIA, AMD, Valve, or OptiScaler. Read the project’s current documentation at the official HelixSR repository before downloading.
This distinction matters because “DLSS 3.7 mod” can suggest a complete DLSS feature set. HelixSR provides super resolution only: it reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. It does not supply DLSS frame generation, Reflex, or other NVIDIA-specific features. A game may therefore show an FSR or DLSS menu entry after patching while still receiving only the upscaling portion of the technology.
HelixSR changes files on a per-game basis. It is not a SteamOS-wide switch and is not guaranteed to work in every title. The setup script examines each game and displays only the routes it considers applicable. Do not force the same option across your library.

Check requirements before you patch a game
Confirm these conditions first:
- The game uses Direct3D 12. HelixSR’s listed requirement is D3D12; a title using another graphics API is outside that stated support.
- The GPU is AMD RDNA 1 or newer. The project lists Vega GPUs as unsupported.
- The game runs through Linux/Proton on the Deck. The project’s Linux instructions are the relevant procedure for SteamOS.
- You can close the game completely before running setup. Patching an executable directory while the game is running can leave files in use.
- You know whether the title uses anti-cheat or another mod that places a
dxgi.dllbeside the executable. Those details affect which routes are safe.
The project’s development and testing basis is an AMD BC-250 at Linux/Mesa RADV. Its README explicitly says that other GPUs and Windows are not tested by the project. That makes Steam Deck compatibility conditional: a game can satisfy the API requirement and still fail because of its renderer, Proton behavior, anti-cheat, or another injected DLL.
Compatibility is also a property of a particular game build, not just its name. A patch can change the renderer, replace an upscaler library, or alter launch behavior. Note the game version and any graphics mods already installed so you can reverse the change cleanly if the title updates. Keep the HelixSR release folder in a stable location; the same folder contains the setup and removal scripts needed later.
Understand the setup choices
HelixSR can reach a game through more than one hook. The setup script presents only choices it believes are available for that game. The letters documented by the project are f for the direct FSR-style route, o for the OptiScaler route, and n to skip. The default selected by pressing Enter can vary by game, so read the prompt rather than assuming that Enter always means the same thing.

The direct DLSS loader is distinct from the two normal setup choices. The README describes it as experimental, with only a few games tested. Do not use it with an anti-cheat game. Do not combine it with OptiScaler, ReShade, or another mod that installs a dxgi.dll beside the game executable.
Compare a route on five practical points: what the game natively exposes, which letter the installer offers, which menu item must be selected afterward, whether anti-cheat or another injected DLL is present, and whether that exact title and hardware combination has been tested. If any answer is unclear, n is the reversible choice. The installer’s limited menu is intentional; an option that is not displayed should not be recreated by copying a DLL from a different game.
Install HelixSR on Steam Deck
1. Download the current release
Open the HelixSR repository and use its latest release, rather than relying on an old guide or a previously downloaded archive. The repository showed version 1.8.1 at the time of the documented release information, but versions can change. Extract the archive into a folder you will keep. The setup and uninstall scripts are run from this extracted folder, so do not place it in a temporary download location that you plan to delete.
Read the release notes and README for the current script names and supported routes. A guide written for an older release may describe a different prompt or a game that is no longer supported. Avoid third-party repacks when the official release is available; the project’s own scripts are the mechanism that records backups and knows which route was applied.

2. Close every affected game
Exit the game and wait until Steam shows it as stopped. Do this for every title you plan to patch before launching the setup script. The script modifies files in each game’s installation directory; open game processes can keep those files locked or overwrite changes when they exit.
Also close overlays, launchers, or helper processes that may still hold the game’s graphics libraries open. If you are unsure whether a title has fully exited, wait a moment and check Steam again rather than starting setup immediately. Patching one game at a time makes the final summary easier to match with the correct in-game setting.

3. Start the Linux setup script
Open a terminal in the extracted HelixSR folder and run:
./helixsr-setup.shThe README also documents double-clicking the script and choosing Run in terminal. If SteamOS asks whether to execute the file, use the run option rather than opening it as text. Keep the terminal open so you can read the prompts and the final summary.

Let the script finish its downloads, local build, file replacement, and summary. If the terminal reports an error, record the message and use the project’s documented removal path instead of trying random permissions changes or manual file copies.
4. Approve the local DLSS-network build
On its first run, setup asks for permission to download NVIDIA’s DLSS DLL and then builds the network locally. The project says its downloads are pinned to versions and checked with SHA-256. The resulting game DLLs contain NVIDIA’s network; the README says these files are intended for the user’s own PC and must not be uploaded or shared. Treat that as the project’s distribution instruction, not as a substitute for your own security review.
The download-and-build step is not the same as installing an NVIDIA driver. HelixSR’s stated design avoids Tensor Cores, CUDA, and ROCm, and the Deck continues to use its existing AMD graphics stack. Allow the script to complete the local build; interrupting it can leave setup incomplete and may mean no usable route is available for the game.
5. Select games and read each prompt
Setup presents a per-game choice. Enter f, o, or n only when that option is shown for the particular title:

- Repeat for the next game instead of applying one answer to all titles.
Only routes the installer considers applicable are displayed. A missing option is a signal not to improvise a DLL copy or rename files. If a title has multiple installations or launchers, verify the path shown by setup before accepting a choice so you do not patch an unintended copy.
6. Follow the final summary in the game
At the end, setup reports what it changed and which upscaler to select. Launch the game only after the script finishes, then use the indicated menu entry:
- For the FSR route, select AMD FSR in the game.
- For the OptiScaler route, select DLSS in the game.
- For an experimental direct loader, use the setting specified by the setup summary and the project’s game-specific notes.
Do not select a different upscaler simply because its name sounds more advanced. The hook and the in-game option must match the route that was installed. Make one change at a time and test a short, repeatable scene first. This makes it easier to tell whether a crash or visual problem comes from HelixSR, another mod, or an ordinary game setting.

How to remove the mod safely
Use the supplied uninstaller
Keep the extracted HelixSR folder until you are certain you no longer need the mod. To remove installations, close the games and run:

./helixsr-uninstall.shSelect the games to restore. For a game that you added manually, pass that game’s installation directory to the uninstaller as documented by the script. The maintainer says the uninstaller restores files that setup replaced to their prior state. It can also offer to delete the built HelixSR DLL and setup downloads.
Run the uninstaller from the same release folder used for setup whenever possible. That keeps the scripts and backup bookkeeping together. If you patched several games, select only the titles you want to restore and leave the others untouched. After removal, launch one restored title without other changes to confirm that its original upscaler and files are back.
Do not delete DLLs by guesswork
Do not remove a guessed dxgi.dll, rename random files, or delete the entire game directory. HelixSR’s backup and restore logic is the intended recovery path and preserves the prior files when the project can do so. If a patched title behaves incorrectly, rerun setup and choose its remove option for that game, as the README recommends.
Manual deletion can remove a file that belonged to the game or another mod and can also discard the backup needed to restore the previous state. The safest sequence is to stop the game, run HelixSR’s uninstaller, review its result, and only then consider Steam’s own file check if a problem remains.

After the HelixSR uninstaller completes, Steam’s own file verification can be used if the game still reports missing or changed files. Verification is a game-file check, not the primary HelixSR removal method. A SteamOS reinstall is also not an ordinary mod-removal step; Steam Support describes reinstall recovery for modified system files in its general SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guidance.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The game will not start after patching
- Exit Steam and the game completely, then rerun
./helixsr-uninstall.shfor that title. - Confirm that you did not combine the experimental direct loader with OptiScaler, ReShade, or another
dxgi.dll-based mod. - Check whether the title uses anti-cheat. The project specifically warns against the experimental direct DLSS route for anti-cheat games.
- If the game is restored, leave it unpatched unless the repository lists a compatible route for that title.
If the crash began after a game update, remove HelixSR first and test the unmodified build. A clean launch establishes whether the update itself is the cause. Reinstall only after checking the current project notes and confirming that the installer offers a route for the new build.
The game launches but the expected option is missing
Return to the setup’s final summary and verify the route. The FSR replacement requires the game’s AMD FSR option; the OptiScaler path requires the DLSS option. Selecting another menu entry does not activate HelixSR’s hook.
If the menu still does not match the summary, do not keep toggling unrelated graphics options or add another upscaler mod on top. Remove the patch, verify the unmodified game, and consult the current game-specific instructions in the repository.

The installer offers no useful route
Choose n. The setup deliberately limits choices to routes it considers available. A game may lack FSR 3.1, use an unsupported rendering path, or have a layout the script cannot safely patch. Wait for a documented update rather than copying files from another title.
Performance is lower than expected
HelixSR adds an upscaling pass and is not a guarantee of higher frame rates. The README’s published timings are GPU time for the upscaling pass on an AMD BC-250 running at 2000 MHz; they are not total game frame rates and are not Steam Deck benchmarks. No independent Steam Deck benchmark is established here, so judge a title with its own frame-time overlay and settings, not with the BC-250 figures.
Upscaling quality and speed depend on the game’s internal resolution, preset, motion-vector data, Proton behavior, and the rest of the rendering workload. Compare the same scene with the same settings, and remember that a sharper image does not prove that frame generation is active. HelixSR does not add that feature.
Visual artifacts or unstable output appear
Return to the route’s intended in-game setting and make sure it matches the installer summary. If the issue persists, remove the patch and test the original game. Do not layer ReShade, OptiScaler, or another dxgi.dll mod over the experimental direct loader while diagnosing a problem; overlapping hooks make the result harder to identify and are specifically warned against by the project.
Compatibility and limitations to keep in mind
Hardware and API scope
The stated hardware floor is AMD RDNA 1 or newer, with Vega unsupported, and the stated graphics API is Direct3D 12. The project’s own testing uses Linux/Mesa RADV on a BC-250, while other GPUs and Windows are not tested by the project. Even though Steam Deck uses an AMD GPU and Proton, that does not amount to a project guarantee for every Deck model, Proton version, or game build.
“Supported AMD hardware” therefore means meeting the project’s stated conditions, not receiving official Valve or NVIDIA support. A title can meet the D3D12 and GPU requirements yet still be omitted because its upscaler hooks, launcher, anti-cheat, or DLL layout are incompatible.
Anti-cheat and injected-DLL conflicts
Anti-cheat systems can react to graphics hooks and injected libraries. The experimental direct DLSS loader carries an explicit warning not to use it with anti-cheat games. Other mods can conflict even without anti-cheat: OptiScaler, ReShade, and any mod that places dxgi.dll beside the executable should not be combined with that experimental route.
If a game’s rules prohibit modifications, skip HelixSR rather than treating a successful launch as proof that the change is safe. The installer’s n option exists for exactly this situation.
Updates can change the answer
Game patches, Proton changes, and new HelixSR releases can alter which route appears. If a title worked previously and then fails after an update, remove the patch with the project’s uninstaller first and check the current repository notes before reinstalling. Keep the release folder so you can run the matching uninstaller.

Do not assume that a newly released HelixSR version should be applied over an existing installation without reading its instructions. Remove the old per-game files when directed, then run the current setup so its backup and route detection operate on the game’s present files.
A safe decision checklist
- Have I downloaded the current release from the official repository?
- Is the game closed before setup starts?
- Does the title use Direct3D 12, and is the GPU within the project’s stated AMD RDNA support?
- Does the setup actually offer an

Use the current Linux/Proton setup, accept only routes it offers for the specific game, avoid the experimental loader with anti-cheat or conflicting DLL mods, and remove it with ./helixsr-uninstall.sh rather than deleting files manually.
