Place an Arlo Pro 6 where it has a clear view of the area you want to monitor, can connect reliably to Wi-Fi, and sees likely movement crossing the frame. Arlo’s Pro 6 manual recommends mounting it 4–6 feet (1.3–2 m) above the ground. Check the view and signal in the Arlo Secure app before drilling or fixing a mount, then follow the app’s setup prompts.
Plan the position before choosing an accessory: the best spot must cover the access point or room you care about, avoid glare, and work with both your Wi-Fi signal and the exact camera variant. Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions list model VMC4070; do not assume a mount or charging accessory fits every Pro 6 model.
Where should you put an Arlo Pro 6 camera?
Start with the activity or access point you need to see, not with the nearest convenient mounting surface. For an outdoor camera, that might be a front or back door, an accessible window, or a route through a fence. Indoors, choose the room or approach you want in view. The position is useful only if the camera can see the intended area without an avoidable obstruction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsArlo’s Pro 6 Camera User Manual says a corner position can expand coverage. A corner may let the camera look across more of a room or approach, but the actual result depends on what is in the way and how the camera is aimed. Hold the camera at a candidate position and inspect its line of sight and Wi-Fi strength in the Arlo Secure app before committing to installation.

- Movement: Can people or other expected activity cross the image rather than approach straight toward or away from the camera?
- Glare: Is the lens aimed away from a direct view of windows, mirrors, or other reflective surfaces?
- Mounting surface: Can the selected mount be securely fixed to that wall or ceiling using appropriate hardware?
Do not judge connectivity by router distance alone. Arlo lists thick walls, brick, concrete, stucco, stone, ceramic, glass and mirrors, metal, water, and multiple floors as possible sources of Wi-Fi interference. A nearby position with fewer obstructions may work better than a more distant one—or the reverse. The app’s signal check at the actual camera location is the practical test.
When comparing two candidate locations, consider the whole scene rather than only how close each one is to a door. A position that gives a broad view may still be a poor choice if a wall blocks the route, the image points directly at a reflective surface, or movement approaches straight toward the lens. Conversely, a less obvious spot may work better if the person’s likely path crosses the frame and the app shows a good signal there. Test more than one spot if the first candidate does not meet all of these checks.
For an outdoor plan, list the access points you want covered—such as the front entrance, rear door, accessible windows, or a fence entrance—and decide which one the camera should prioritize. The manual’s corner-placement suggestion can help widen a view, but it does not guarantee that one camera will cover every entrance or eliminate every blind spot. Verify the specific scene in the app before fixing the mount.

How high should you mount an Arlo Pro 6?
Arlo recommends mounting the Pro 6 at least 4–6 feet (1.3–2 m) above the ground. The Pro 6 manual states: “Situate your camera at least 4-6 feet (1.3-2m) above the ground, your camera has the best motion detection range and field of view at this height.” This is the Pro 6 guidance; do not substitute a different height recommendation for an older Arlo Pro model.
Use that height as the starting point, then check whether the camera can frame the intended scene from the actual mounting surface. The sources do not specify a separate indoor height. For an indoor installation, use the same general Pro 6 recommendation while prioritizing a clear view, workable Wi-Fi signal, and an angle that captures the room or approach you chose.
Height is one part of positioning, not a replacement for a view test. A camera set at the recommended height can still miss an approach if it is aimed too far to one side or if an obstruction blocks the intended area. Before drilling, hold it at the planned height and check both the scene and signal in the app. After installation, use live view to make small framing adjustments and confirm that the target area remains visible.
How should you aim the camera to catch motion?
Arlo says the motion sensor is more effective when movement crosses the camera’s field of view from side to side than when movement travels directly toward or away from it. When choosing between two otherwise suitable positions, consider the direction a person is likely to walk and favor the angle that lets that movement pass across the image.

Avoid aiming directly at a window, mirror, or reflective surface. Reflections and glare can interfere with performance, and an appealing view through glass is not a substitute for a clear view of the area you intend to monitor. Once the camera is mounted, use the app’s live view to check the framing and make small angle adjustments. Confirm that the intended scene is visible and that the likely route of movement crosses the frame.
A useful way to assess the angle is to imagine the normal route a visitor or other expected activity will take. If that route runs from one side of the image to the other, the motion direction matches Arlo’s preferred cross-frame arrangement. If it leads directly toward or away from the camera, consider whether a different corner or angle can make the route cross the view instead. Keep the change small enough that the access point you meant to monitor does not disappear from the frame.
How to install and mount an Arlo Pro 6
Complete setup in the Arlo Secure app and wait for its instruction to mount the camera. The sequence matters: Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions specifically say not to begin mounting before the app directs you to do so. Setup prompts can vary with the device, account, app version, and region, so use the prompts shown for your camera rather than relying on a fixed screen-by-screen sequence.
- Prepare the camera and start setup. Charge the camera as needed, then begin setup in the Arlo Secure app. Follow the current prompts and wait until the app tells you to mount the camera.
- Test the intended location. Hold the camera where you plan to install it. Check the line of sight and Wi-Fi strength in the app. If the signal is weak, try a nearby spot with fewer obstructions and test again before drilling.
- Confirm the camera and mount match. Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions list model VMC4070 as applicable. Check the exact camera variant and the mount included in the box before buying a separate accessory; the guide does not establish that every mount fits every Pro 6 variant.
- Mark the mount position. For the Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount, Arlo’s instructions describe wall or ceiling installation and marking three screw locations. Make sure the chosen surface and position allow the camera to cover the intended scene.
- Drill and fasten the mounting plate. The mount instructions specify a 15/64-inch (6 mm) drill bit. Arlo recommends anchors for drywall, brick, or tile. Fasten the plate with a Phillips screwdriver, using suitable hardware for the surface and the mount instructions.
- Attach and aim the camera. Attach the camera to the mount, adjust its direction to frame the intended area, and tighten the adjustment. Do not force the camera or leave the mount loose.
- Review the view in the app. Check live view and framing. Make small angle changes as needed so the target area is visible and expected movement crosses the image.
Arlo Support’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions were last updated February 25, 2026. Follow the instructions supplied with the mount if their details differ from a general description here.
Before drilling, use the test position to resolve the two most expensive-to-correct problems: poor signal and poor framing. If either check fails, move the camera and retest rather than relying on the mount’s adjustment range to compensate. Confirm that the planned screw locations suit the surface and that the specified mount hardware is appropriate. Arlo recommends anchors for drywall, brick, or tile; use the mount directions for the actual installation rather than assuming the same fastener works on every surface.
The 15/64-inch (6 mm) drill-bit specification applies to Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions, not automatically to every accessory or installation. Check the instructions for the mount you are actually using. Similarly, the three marked screw locations and Phillips screwdriver describe that mount’s installation steps; they are not a universal drilling template for all Arlo mounts.
Can you install an Arlo Pro 6 indoors and outdoors?
Yes. Arlo’s weather guidance lists Pro series cameras as weather resistant and suitable for outdoor use. Weather resistance does not mean that the battery or the inside of the battery compartment can be exposed to water: Arlo says to keep both from water exposure. Do not leave the battery compartment open outdoors or assume that an outdoor charging setup is waterproof.

Arlo’s weather guidance, last updated September 2, 2026, gives a recommended operating range of -4°F to 113°F (-20°C to 45°C) for most Arlo cameras and doorbells. That is general Arlo guidance, not a Pro 6-specific operating range established here; consult the instructions for the exact camera variant when temperature limits matter at your location.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor any outdoor charging arrangement, use only accessories explicitly suited to outdoor use and verify compatibility with the exact Pro 6 model before buying. Arlo’s general weather page mentions outdoor charging cables and solar panels for some cameras, but that does not establish compatibility with every Pro 6 variant.
Indoors, the same practical positioning checks apply: choose a useful view, test the signal at the planned spot, avoid aiming directly at reflective surfaces, and consider the direction of movement. There is no distinct indoor mounting-height recommendation in the Pro 6 material cited here.
For indoor placement, think about which room or approach the camera should see and whether furniture, walls, mirrors, or windows affect the view or signal. A location near a window is not automatically a good choice: avoid a direct view of reflective glass or a mirror, and verify the actual image rather than assuming the camera will see a useful scene through or around it. Use the app at the proposed position before securing the mount.
For outdoor placement, weather resistance permits outdoor use, but it does not remove the need to protect the battery and the inside of the battery compartment from water. The available weather guidance does not make every charging arrangement waterproof. If you want continuous or accessory-based charging, check both the accessory’s outdoor suitability and its explicit compatibility with the exact Pro 6 variant; do not infer either from a general mention of cables or solar panels.
Which mount fits the Arlo Pro 6?
Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount is the source-backed option for model VMC4070. Its instructions describe wall or ceiling attachment and an adjustable aim. Check the exact camera model and what hardware is included before ordering an additional mount, especially if the camera is the VMC4072 Pro XL variant: the cited mount instructions name VMC4070, not VMC4072.
Do not assume that a magnetic mount is compatible just because it is made for another Arlo camera. Arlo’s product page names earlier generations through Pro 5 in its magnetic wall mount compatibility text and does not explicitly name Pro 6. Check the current compatibility listing for your exact model before choosing that accessory.

| Choice | What is established | What to check before installing |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount | Arlo’s mount instructions list VMC4070 and describe wall or ceiling attachment with angle adjustment. | Confirm the camera variant, included hardware, and whether the surface needs anchors. |

If you expect to remove or reposition the camera often, consider that practical need alongside compatibility, the security of attachment to the chosen surface, angle adjustment, and included hardware. The compatibility details cited here do not establish that the magnetic and adjustable mounts are interchangeable for Pro 6.
When comparing mounts, check five practical points: whether Arlo explicitly lists your model, how firmly the mount attaches to the intended surface, how much angle adjustment it provides, whether you expect to remove the camera for charging or repositioning, and which fasteners or other hardware are included. A mount that is easy to reposition is not useful if model support is unclear or it cannot be securely attached to the chosen surface. Confirm the exact camera variant and package contents before ordering an extra accessory.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if the placement is not working
- The app shows a weak Wi-Fi signal: Try a nearby location with fewer potential obstructions, then check signal strength again in the app before mounting. Do not treat a short router distance as proof of a good connection.
- The view misses part of the intended area: Recheck the line of sight and candidate position before drilling. If already installed, use live view to make small angle adjustments and confirm the scene again.
- Movement travels toward or away from the lens: Reconsider the camera’s angle or location so the usual route crosses the frame from side to side where possible.
- Glare or reflections appear in the view: Avoid a direct view of the window, mirror, or reflective surface by selecting another position or changing the camera’s aim.
- The mount does not appear to fit: Check the exact model number and the mount’s current compatibility information. The documented VMC4070 fit should not be extended automatically to VMC4072.
- You are unsure about outdoor charging: Do not infer compatibility or water protection from a general accessory description. Verify that the accessory is intended for outdoor use and explicitly supports your camera model.
If you are still deciding between locations, return to the same sequence: hold the camera in position, check the sightline, test Wi-Fi in the app, and consider whether expected movement crosses the image. Change one factor at a time where practical, such as shifting the position to reduce an obstruction or turning the camera away from a reflection, then check the image and signal again. This makes it easier to see which change improves the result before fixing the mount.
If the app’s setup flow does not match a guide or screen sequence you have seen elsewhere, continue with the prompts currently shown for your device, account, app version, and region. Arlo’s setup can vary; the important installation checkpoint is to wait until the app tells you to mount the camera, then confirm view and signal at the intended position.

How high should I mount an Arlo Pro 6?
Arlo’s Pro 6 Camera User Manual recommends a height of at least 4–6 feet (1.3–2 m) above the ground. The cited material does not give a separate indoor height recommendation.
How do I aim an Arlo Pro 6 so it catches motion?
Where possible, aim it so expected movement crosses the frame from side to side. Arlo says its motion sensor is more effective with cross-frame movement than with movement directly toward or away from the camera. Check the framing in live view and avoid direct views of reflective surfaces.
Can I install an Arlo Pro 6 outdoors?
Yes. Arlo’s weather guidance lists Pro series cameras as weather resistant for outdoor use. Keep the battery and inside of the battery compartment from water exposure, and do not assume an outdoor charging arrangement is waterproof. Verify outdoor suitability and compatibility for any charging accessory.
Which mount fits the Arlo Pro 6?
Arlo’s Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions list VMC4070 and describe wall or ceiling mounting with angle adjustment. They do not establish fit for every Pro 6 variant, including VMC4072 Pro XL. Arlo’s cited magnetic wall mount compatibility text does not explicitly name Pro 6, so confirm current compatibility for the exact camera model before buying.
What drill bit does the Arlo Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount require?
Arlo’s mount instructions specify a 15/64-inch (6 mm) drill bit and describe marking three screw locations. They recommend anchors for drywall, brick, or tile. These details apply to that mount; follow the instructions for the specific accessory you install.
Does Arlo publish a Pro 6 outdoor operating temperature range?
The cited Arlo weather guidance gives -4°F to 113°F (-20°C to 45°C) as the recommended range for most Arlo cameras and doorbells, but this is general guidance rather than a Pro 6-specific range. Check the instructions for your exact camera variant if temperature limits matter.
The Bottom Line
For a reliable Arlo Pro 6 installation, start with a clear view, a tested Wi-Fi connection, and an angle that lets expected movement cross the frame. Follow Arlo’s 4–6-foot (1.3–2 m) height recommendation, complete setup in the app before mounting, and verify the live view after adjustment. The Adjustable Indoor/Outdoor Mount instructions list VMC4070; confirm compatibility for other variants and any charging accessory before buying.
