If you mean Blizzard’s supported game, install the selected World of Warcraft version through the Battle.net desktop app. Blizzard does not provide a supported installation or connection procedure for unauthorized private servers, and its published policy rejects network play outside Battle.net. You can still use the steps below to install WoW Classic officially, understand the account requirement, choose the right realm, and see exactly where Blizzard’s support ends.

First, separate official WoW Classic from a private server

“WoW Classic on a private server” can describe two different destinations. The official versions—such as WoW Classic Era and Cataclysm Classic—are Blizzard products installed and launched through Battle.net. A private server is a third-party service that attempts to emulate or redirect the game’s connection to infrastructure outside Battle.net.

That distinction changes every practical step. The official client, version selector, account access, updates, and realm list come from Blizzard. A private server may instead use its own client, launcher, configuration, or address. Blizzard’s installation documentation covers only the first case.

The Blizzard material used for this guide does not provide private-server client downloads, server lists, configuration files, launcher settings, replacement addresses, or connection instructions. Consequently, there is no Blizzard-approved procedure that this guide can reproduce for joining a private server. Do not assume that a third-party installer is an alternate Battle.net installation or that a Classic folder can be redirected safely just by changing a text file.

Blizzard’s published position on private servers

Blizzard’s Legal FAQ states: “Blizzard Entertainment® does not support or condone network play of its games anywhere but Battle.net®.” The same answer describes hosting or providing matchmaking and emulating or redirecting Blizzard communication protocols as prohibited without prior written consent.

Blizzard’s End User License Agreement separately addresses unauthorized connections, including connections to servers that emulate or attempt to emulate the Platform. These are Blizzard’s published policy and contract terms, not a universal legal ruling for every country or personal circumstance. Laws and the EULA can change, so read the current versions if the policy question affects you.

This distinction matters when someone says a private server is “legal” or “official.” Blizzard’s policy does not endorse a particular operator, and the sources do not establish the safety, legitimacy, availability, ownership, or compatibility of any third-party server. Treat claims made by an operator as its own claims, not as Blizzard support.

Because Blizzard does not document a private-server setup, this article does not supply third-party downloads or technical connection steps. The practical, supported route is to install the official Classic version in Battle.net and use Blizzard support if that installation fails.

What you need for the official Classic installation

  • A Battle.net desktop app installation and a Blizzard account that you can sign in to.
  • The World of Warcraft product selected in Battle.net.
  • An account with game time or a subscription when Battle.net requires it for WoW Classic or another selected game mode. Blizzard’s support page does not establish one identical access rule for every mode.
  • Enough disk space and a supported operating system and hardware configuration. Requirements vary by version and can change; check Blizzard’s current World of Warcraft requirements page before installing rather than relying on an old specification.
  • A stable internet connection for downloading and updating the client. Blizzard’s installation instructions do not state a universal download size or bandwidth requirement.
  • Time to install each version you actually want. Blizzard treats the listed versions as separate installations, so installing one does not automatically install the others.

You do not need a separate Blizzard installer for each Classic branch. The Battle.net app is the documented installation route; the important choice is the version shown above the installation control. If you are helping another player, have that person sign in to the account that should receive access before you begin. Installing files while signed in to the wrong account can make the client appear installed while the intended account still lacks the required access.

Install WoW Classic through Battle.net

  1. Launch the Battle.net desktop app. Sign in to the account that should own or access the game. Let the app finish any update it requests before looking for the game controls.
  2. Open World of Warcraft. Select the World of Warcraft icon. If it is not visible in the main row, open All Games and choose it there.
  3. Choose the version before installing. Use the version selector above the Install button. Blizzard lists separate choices, including Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, and Cataclysm Classic. Select the Classic version you actually intend to play instead of assuming the default entry is the right one.
  4. Start the installation. Click Install, review the destination and other options shown by the current Battle.net client, and let the app download the selected version. The labels and layout can change as the desktop app is updated, but the version choice remains the key decision.
  5. Wait for the client to finish. Keep Battle.net open until the installation completes and the button changes to the available play state. Updates are handled through the same app. Interrupting a download can leave an incomplete installation that Battle.net must resume or repair.
  6. Launch the selected version. Start the game from Battle.net, then follow the in-game prompts to choose a realm and create or select a character.

Each World of Warcraft version must be installed separately. Installing Modern WoW does not automatically install WoW Classic Era or Cataclysm Classic, and selecting a different version may require its own download. If you want two branches, allow the app to complete the first installation, then return to the selector and install the second.

Choose an installation location carefully

Battle.net presents a destination during installation. Use a drive with enough available space and avoid moving the folder manually while the download is running. If you later move the files, the app may show Install because it no longer knows where that version lives. In that situation, use Locate the game rather than starting another download immediately.

If Battle.net says “Install” when the game is already on your computer

Blizzard’s support instructions include a recovery path for an existing installation. When the app offers Install even though the files are already present, use Locate the game and select the folder containing that installation. This lets Battle.net find the existing files instead of starting an unrelated new installation.

Point the app to the folder for the matching branch. A Modern WoW directory will not satisfy a request for WoW Classic Era, and a Cataclysm Classic directory will not substitute for another version. The exact location of the button can move as the desktop app is updated, so follow the wording shown in your current client.

Choose the right Classic version

Battle.net choice What the selector means Installation behavior
WoW Classic Era A separate Classic version listed by Blizzard Installs separately from other World of Warcraft versions
Cataclysm Classic A separate Classic version listed by Blizzard Installs separately from other World of Warcraft versions
Modern WoW The current modern World of Warcraft choice shown alongside Classic options Uses its own version selection and installation

Use the name displayed in Battle.net rather than assuming that “Classic” refers to one permanent client. Blizzard changes the available versions and labels over time. If a guide or video shows a selector that does not match your app, check the current support article before changing folders or reinstalling.

Version choice should follow your intended characters and community. A character created in one branch is not evidence that the other branch is installed, and changing the selector does not necessarily convert an existing installation. Check the selected entry every time you launch if you keep multiple versions installed.

Account access, game time, and subscriptions

Blizzard’s installation support page says that WoW Classic versions or select game modes may require game time or a subscription. If Battle.net asks you to subscribe, first verify that you are signed in to the intended account. Then check the account’s purchase status or redemption status, if you recently added access or redeemed a code.

The Classic primer for new players describes access for active subscribers or accounts with game time as included at no additional cost. It does not provide a current price, and prices and regional offers can change. Do not treat an old price quoted elsewhere as a current requirement, and do not infer a current fee from a third-party server’s pricing.

Access is account-based. Installing files on a computer does not by itself grant access to every mode shown in the version selector; the account status and the selected mode determine what Battle.net allows you to launch. If one account works and another does not on the same computer, compare the accounts’ game-time, subscription, purchase, and redemption status before reinstalling.

Start playing after installation

Select a realm

Blizzard’s Classic primer directs players to choose a realm after launching the game. A realm is the game world in which your characters exist. Characters can group only with other players on the same realm, so select the realm that matches the friends or community you intend to play with.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask friends which exact realm and version they use before creating a character. Being on the same Battle.net account family or having the same client installed does not remove the same-realm limitation described by Blizzard. If you choose a different realm, you may need to create a new character there to play together.

Create or select a character

After choosing a realm, follow the game’s character-creation flow or select an existing character on that realm. The primer’s same-realm limitation means that choosing different realms can prevent characters from grouping together even when both accounts are active.

Keep the version consistent

When troubleshooting, confirm both the Battle.net version selection and the realm. Launching a different Classic branch than the one your characters use can make the expected characters or community appear to be missing, even though the installation itself is working. Before deleting files, verify the branch, account, and realm in that order.

What to do when installation does not work

The wrong version is installed

Return to the World of Warcraft page in Battle.net and inspect the selector above Install or Play. Choose WoW Classic Era, Cataclysm Classic, or the other intended entry explicitly. Blizzard treats versions as separate installations, so changing the selector may require installing that version rather than converting the existing files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battle.net asks for a subscription

Confirm the signed-in account, then review its game-time, subscription, purchase, or redemption status. Blizzard specifically recommends checking these account details when the app requests a subscription. Do not assume that installing the client has fulfilled the access requirement, and do not assume that an account with access to one mode automatically has identical access to every listed mode.

The app cannot find an existing installation

Use Locate the game from the prompt that appears in place of the normal launch option, and point Battle.net to the folder that contains the existing version. Choose the folder for the correct Classic branch; selecting a different version’s directory will not satisfy the separate-installation requirement. If you are unsure which folder is correct, compare its contents and name with the version you selected rather than pointing to a parent folder at random.

Your computer may not meet current requirements

Check Blizzard’s current World of Warcraft system-requirements page for the operating system and Classic version you selected. The Classic primer contains a hardware list, but Blizzard’s current support information is the better reference because requirements and supported platforms can change. The installation sources do not establish one timeless specification for every release, so do not copy an old processor, memory, graphics, or operating-system list into a new setup.

The download or update stops

Use Blizzard’s official support channel for the current Battle.net troubleshooting path. The available buttons, diagnostics, and repair options can change with the desktop app, so a fixed sequence copied from an older guide may not match your screen. When contacting support, record the selected game version, the exact message shown, whether Battle.net recognizes the existing folder, and whether the account has the required game time or subscription.

The game launches but expected characters are missing

Check the account first, then confirm the Classic branch and realm. A different account can have different access, a different branch can show a different character set, and a different realm can place you in a separate game world. These checks are more useful than reinstalling every version immediately.

Why this guide does not provide private-server connection steps

A third-party server may ask for a different client, a modified configuration, a separate launcher, or a replacement address. None of those details are covered by Blizzard’s installation documentation, and the reviewed sources do not establish that any particular server is safe, legitimate, available, or compatible with a current Classic release.

Following an unofficial download or redirecting the client can also put you outside Blizzard’s supported environment. Blizzard’s published policy specifically rejects network play outside Battle.net and its EULA addresses unauthorized connections. Whether a particular activity is lawful in a specific jurisdiction is a separate question that requires local legal advice; this article does not make that determination.

If your goal is to play Classic with Blizzard account support, updates, and the documented installation path, use the Battle.net version selector and the official support process. If your goal is specifically a private server, you will need to consult that operator’s own documentation and independently assess its terms and risks; Blizzard’s materials cannot validate or troubleshoot it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Blizzard’s Battle.net installer connect me to a private server?

No. Blizzard’s documented installer is for its supported World of Warcraft versions. Blizzard’s Legal FAQ says it does not support or condone network play outside Battle.net, and its documentation does not provide private-server connection settings.

Do I install WoW Classic Era and Cataclysm Classic separately?

Yes. Blizzard lists them as separate choices, and each World of Warcraft version must be installed separately through Battle.net.

Why does Battle.net ask me to subscribe after I install Classic?

Blizzard says WoW Classic versions or select game modes may require game time or a subscription. Verify the signed-in account and check its game-time, subscription, purchase, or redemption status.

Can I use an old Classic system-requirements list?

Use Blizzard’s current World of Warcraft requirements page instead. Requirements and supported platforms can change, and the Classic primer’s specifications may no longer be current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make Battle.net recognize files already on my computer?

Choose Locate the game when the app shows Install for an existing installation, then select the folder for the matching World of Warcraft version.

Can characters on different realms group together?

Blizzard’s Classic primer says characters can group only with others on the same realm. Coordinate the realm and version with friends before creating characters.

Does installing the client automatically give me access?

No. Installation places the files on the computer, but account game time, subscription, purchase, or redemption status can determine whether Battle.net permits the selected mode to launch.

Does Blizzard endorse any private-server operator?

The official materials described here do not endorse or validate any private server, and they do not establish an operator’s safety, legitimacy, availability, or compatibility.

The Bottom Line

For supported WoW Classic play, open Battle.net, select the exact Classic version, install it separately, verify your account access, and choose the same realm as your friends. Blizzard does not document or endorse private-server connections; its Legal FAQ and EULA set limits that should be read in their current form.
