Yes, you can still install and play Total War: SHOGUN 2 on a current Windows computer, but the Steam client requirement and the game’s own compatibility are separate questions. Choose a legitimate PC storefront and the correct edition, leave at least 32 GB free on the destination drive, install through the store library, and start the game through its launcher. If it fails, check the published requirements, verify the installation files, make sure Windows is using the intended graphics processor, and then follow SEGA’s compatibility-mode or administrator guidance.
The original game has legacy requirements that predate Windows 10 and 11. Those specifications tell you what the game was designed to need; they are not a certification that every modern system will launch it. The steps below separate what is documented from what you should verify on your own PC.
What you need before installing
Have these items ready:
- A Windows PC with a supported, legitimate storefront client.
- At least 32 GB of free space on the drive where the game will be installed. This is the figure on the game’s Steam listing; keeping additional room for updates and normal Windows operation is sensible, but that extra headroom is practical advice rather than a published requirement.
- A graphics adapter, processor, memory, and display that meet or exceed the game’s listed minimums.
- Your store account credentials and a stable internet connection for downloading and validating files.
Steam’s client documentation says the Windows client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. That statement applies to the client, not automatically to every older game in your library. Treat these as three separate checks:

- Can the storefront client run? This is the client-level operating-system question.
- Can SHOGUN 2 launch on this Windows installation? Legacy games can encounter launcher, driver, or compatibility problems even when the client opens normally.
- Does the hardware meet the game’s specification? A modern PC normally exceeds the old CPU and memory figures, but the game still has to select and initialize a compatible graphics device.

Choose the game and storefront
SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ identifies Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and GOG as PC storefronts for the Complete Edition. Store interfaces, pricing, regional availability, and edition names can change, so open the live page for your country before purchasing or downloading.

The release date listed by SEGA Japan is October 14, 2026. Because availability and contents can change after a dated announcement, confirm the live listing and account entitlement before you begin the download. The relevant pages are SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ and the SEGA Japan product page.
Check the published system requirements
The following values are copied from Steam’s listing for the original game. They are historical product specifications, not an independent modern compatibility test.

The listing does not provide a Windows 10 or Windows 11 game-support guarantee. If your PC uses a recent discrete GPU and a modern version of Windows, the relevant uncertainty is usually not raw performance; it is whether the legacy launcher and rendering path initialize correctly on that particular system.

Prepare Windows and the destination drive
Confirm space on the correct drive
In the store client, identify the library location you intend to use before clicking Install. Windows may have several drives, and the free-space figure must apply to the selected one. Reserve the listed 32 GB plus room for downloads, temporary installation files, updates, and ordinary operating-system use. If the client reports insufficient space, choose another library location or free space before retrying rather than repeatedly restarting the same installation.
Identify the graphics processors in your PC
Laptops and some desktops expose both integrated and discrete graphics. Before launching, know which adapter you want Windows to use. If the game opens on the integrated adapter or reports an unsupported device, use Windows’ graphics settings to assign the game’s executable to the intended high-performance GPU. SEGA’s troubleshooting guidance specifically directs users to Windows GPU-selection instructions; it does not promise that choosing a different adapter fixes every launch failure.
Close avoidable conflicts
For the first launch, close overlays, screen recorders, and other utilities that inject themselves into games. This is a diagnostic step, not a requirement published by Steam. If the game works with those programs closed, re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict.

- Open the storefront client and sign in. Use the account that owns the original game or the Complete Edition. If you have more than one account, check the library before buying or downloading.
- Open your Library. Search for Total War: SHOGUN 2 and distinguish the original listing from any Complete Edition listing. Read the edition description and included-content panel before selecting it.
- Choose Install. Select the destination library or drive when the client asks. Confirm that the displayed free space is on that drive and that the installation path is one you can access.
- Let the download and file allocation finish. Do not launch while the client still shows a pending update, verification, or queued download. A paused or partially allocated install can look complete in a shortcut while files are still missing.
- Start the game from the storefront Library. The store may open a separate SHOGUN 2 launcher. Allow that launcher to finish its first-run setup, and use its Play control rather than bypassing it with an old desktop shortcut.
- Choose initial video settings conservatively if the launcher offers them. Use a resolution supported by your display. The Steam listing’s minimum is 1024×768 and its recommended minimum is 1280×1024; these figures describe the listing, not a requirement to use those exact resolutions on a modern monitor.
- Reach the main menu before changing several variables. Start a new campaign or a short custom battle only after the menu loads. Change one graphics or display option at a time so that you can identify the setting responsible if the next launch fails.
If your store presents a different button label or a combined launcher, follow the current on-screen wording. The important controls are the library’s install action, the selected library location, and the game’s own launch step.
What to do when installation fails
The game is not in your library
- Check that you signed into the account that purchased or claimed the game.
- Search the library for both the original title and the Complete Edition name.
- Review the live product page for your country. SEGA lists four PC storefronts, but ownership on one storefront does not establish ownership on another.
- If you expected the Complete Edition to add content to an existing purchase, read the current edition and entitlement terms rather than assuming an automatic upgrade.
The download stops or reports insufficient space
- Confirm the destination drive and its current free space.
- Close other downloads and restart the storefront client.
- Free additional space beyond the 32 GB listing, then retry the install.
- If the client repeatedly fails at the same percentage, cancel the incomplete installation, restart the client, and begin a clean install in a library with adequate space.
The client installs the game but the launcher never appears
First, confirm that the client shows the game as fully installed and has no pending update. Then use the storefront’s file-verification command. For Steam, SEGA’s general troubleshooting article recommends verifying the game’s files. Verification compares the local installation with the store’s manifest and replaces missing or damaged files; it is a check, not a guarantee of compatibility.

Fix common modern-PC launch problems
Windows opens the client, but SHOGUN 2 crashes immediately
- Confirm that your system meets the CPU, memory, graphics, DirectX, display, and storage values in the table.
- Verify the game files in the storefront client.
- Make sure Windows is assigning the game to the intended GPU, especially on a laptop with integrated and discrete adapters.
- Try the compatibility-mode and administrator-launch procedures in SEGA’s troubleshooting guidance. Apply one change, test, and record the result so you can undo an unsuccessful change.
- If the game still exits, undo experimental settings and consult the current SEGA support instructions for the exact Windows version and launcher behavior.
A black screen appears, or the display goes out of range
Use the launcher’s video options, if available, to select a resolution your monitor supports. Start with a windowed or conservative display mode when the launcher provides that choice, then test full-screen after reaching the main menu. Do not infer from a black screen that the installation is corrupt until you have verified the files and checked the selected GPU.

The game uses the wrong graphics adapter
Open Windows graphics settings, locate the installed game’s executable, and assign the preferred high-performance adapter. Restart the game after changing the assignment. SEGA specifically points to Windows GPU-selection guidance because the store client can be running on one adapter while the game chooses another.
Administrator or compatibility settings make no difference
Those options are troubleshooting tools, not universal fixes. If they do not change the result, return the executable to its normal settings, verify files again, and test the launcher with the correct GPU selected. A modern Windows installation can still expose an incompatibility that the published legacy requirements do not address.

Keep the launch path consistent
Start SHOGUN 2 from the storefront library so the client can apply updates, validate ownership, and pass control to the game’s launcher. An old shortcut may still work, but it can hide whether the store has a pending update or whether the selected edition is the one being launched.
Change settings methodically
Once the main menu works, change one setting at a time and relaunch if the game requests it. Record the working resolution and display mode. If a change causes a crash, revert that single change instead of reinstalling immediately; reinstalling does not correct an incompatible setting or GPU selection.

Understand what “modern PC” does and does not mean
A current processor, large amount of RAM, or recent graphics card can exceed the old specification while the game still fails at startup. The Steam requirements were written for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7, and they call for DirectX 9.0c even though the recommended graphics example is DirectX 11-capable. That combination explains why raw speed is not a complete compatibility test. The practical test is whether the launcher and game initialize on your particular Windows build after the store files are verified.
When to reinstall
Reinstall only after the less destructive checks have been completed:
- The client shows the correct edition and account.
- The destination drive has more than the listed 32 GB available.
- The installation has completed and pending downloads are finished.
- File verification reports no remaining problem, or has replaced damaged files.
- Windows is using the intended GPU.
- Compatibility-mode and administrator guidance has been tested and documented.
If you do reinstall, remove the incomplete installation through the storefront, restart the client, select a library with sufficient space, and install again. Reinstalling is useful for missing or corrupted files; it cannot guarantee that an older launcher will be compatible with every Windows 10 or 11 configuration.
A short pre-launch checklist
- Correct storefront account and edition confirmed.
- Live regional listing checked, especially for the Complete Edition.
- At least 32 GB free on the chosen drive, with practical extra headroom.
- CPU, RAM, graphics, DirectX, and display requirements reviewed.
- Store client fully updated and game installation complete.
- Game files verified after any failed or interrupted launch.
- Preferred GPU assigned in Windows where the PC has multiple adapters.
- SEGA’s compatibility-mode and administrator instructions consulted if the launcher fails.
Once those checks pass, launch from the storefront library, allow the SHOGUN 2 launcher to open, and change graphics options gradually. This approach gives you a clear way to distinguish an account or installation problem from a legacy-game compatibility problem.
