Yes—you can install and play SteamVR demos on a compatible PC headset, including a Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 or Quest Pro. Install Steam and SteamVR on a Windows PC, connect or pair the headset, complete Room Setup, then use Steam’s Demos filter and the title’s VR Support labels to choose a compatible demo. A wired headset connection is the most predictable option; Quest headsets can also stream wirelessly through Steam Link when the PC and network meet Meta’s requirements.

The important distinction is that SteamVR is the PC runtime, not a guarantee that every Steam demo supports every headset. The individual demo’s VR label, controller support, room-scale support and system requirements determine whether it will work well.

What SteamVR does and which headsets it supports

SteamVR is Valve’s PC runtime for virtual-reality headsets. It provides the common environment that launches VR applications, manages the headset and controllers, defines the play area and displays the SteamVR dashboard. Supported headset families include Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality devices. Meta Quest headsets can also play SteamVR content when connected to the PC by cable or streamed through Steam Link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SteamVR compatibility does not automatically make every demo compatible. A developer may limit a title to particular controllers, room-scale modes, tracking systems or graphics capabilities. Always treat the demo’s own store-page information as the final compatibility check.

Check the PC, headset and connection before installing

Start with Valve’s current SteamVR baseline. These are minimums for the SteamVR runtime, not a performance guarantee for a demanding demo.

Component Valve’s SteamVR minimum What to verify
Operating system Windows 10 Use a supported 64-bit Windows installation and current headset software where required.
Memory 4 GB RAM More memory can leave useful headroom for the game, Steam and background applications.
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent Compare the demo’s own GPU requirement rather than assuming the SteamVR minimum is sufficient.
Internet Broadband internet Needed for Steam installation, downloads, updates and account authentication.
USB USB 2.0 Check the headset manufacturer’s required ports and adapters as well.
Video connection HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 Use the connector and cable specified for your headset; DisplayPort 1.2 or newer is directly relevant for headsets that use DisplayPort.

Valve notes that requirements vary by Steam title. A demo can require a faster graphics card, additional storage, a particular controller or room-scale tracking even when SteamVR itself starts successfully. Open the demo’s store page before downloading it and compare its Windows requirements with your PC.

Headset-specific checks

  • Valve Index, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift: install the headset’s required PC software, connect its tracking and display hardware, then let Steam detect it.
  • Windows Mixed Reality: install the Windows Mixed Reality headset software and Portal before launching SteamVR.
  • Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro: choose a wired PC connection using the vendor’s PC connection software, or use Steam Link for wireless streaming. The wireless path still runs Steam and SteamVR on the PC.

Choose a wired or wireless route

The connection method changes setup, latency risk and troubleshooting. Neither route changes the demo’s PC requirements: the game still runs on the computer.

Criterion Wired connection Wireless Steam Link
Best fit Any headset with a supported USB and HDMI or DisplayPort connection Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 or Quest Pro
Network dependence Internet is needed for installation and updates, but play does not depend on a wireless stream Requires a suitable local Wi-Fi network and a PC running Steam and SteamVR
Latency and stability Usually the more predictable option because the headset video path is cabled Depends on signal strength, congestion, router capability and the distance between headset and router
Meta’s minimum wireless network Not applicable 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router
Meta’s recommended arrangement Not applicable Wi-Fi 6 or 6E for the headset, with the PC connected to the router by Ethernet

If you are diagnosing a new setup, begin wired when your headset supports it. Once SteamVR launches reliably, you can move to wireless streaming and isolate network problems from headset or demo problems.

Install the headset’s PC software first

SteamVR can provide the common runtime, but it does not replace every manufacturer’s driver, Portal or connection utility.

Windows Mixed Reality

  1. Install the Windows Mixed Reality headset software and Portal in Windows.
  2. Connect the headset and complete the Portal’s device setup.
  3. Install Steam and SteamVR if they are not already installed.
  4. Launch SteamVR when ready to begin its tutorial.

The Portal establishes the Windows Mixed Reality side of the connection; SteamVR then supplies the Steam runtime and dashboard.

Meta Quest

For a cable connection, install the vendor’s PC connection software and follow its headset-pairing instructions before opening SteamVR. For a wireless connection, install Steam Link directly in the Quest headset; the detailed pairing sequence is covered below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other PC headsets

Install the headset’s current PC software, base-station or tracking utilities and firmware updates according to its manufacturer. Connect the required USB and HDMI or DisplayPort cables before opening Steam so detection can occur cleanly.

Install Steam and SteamVR

  1. Install Steam for Windows and sign in to the account that will own the demo.
  2. Connect the headset, or pair it through the headset’s PC software.
  3. Wait for Steam to detect the headset. Valve documents that SteamVR is automatically installed when Steam detects a headset connected to the PC.
  4. If it does not install automatically, search the Steam store or library for SteamVR and install it manually.
  5. Launch SteamVR and follow the introductory tutorial. Keep the headset connected and awake while the runtime starts.

SteamVR normally appears as its own application in Steam. Starting it before a demo is useful during initial setup because you can confirm tracking, controllers and the play area before troubleshooting the game itself.

Complete Room Setup and boundaries

Run SteamVR Room Setup before playing in a new space or after moving the headset’s tracking equipment. Room Setup defines the play area, while SteamVR’s Chaperone boundary system warns you when you approach its edge.

  1. Open SteamVR and select the Room Setup option from the SteamVR status window or dashboard.
  2. Choose the room-scale or standing option that matches the demo and your available space.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to identify the floor, play area and controller position.
  4. Confirm the boundary is clear of furniture, pets, cables and other hazards.
  5. Finish the setup and test that the boundary appears in the headset before launching a demo.

Room-scale support is title-specific. A demo marked for standing or seated play may not use the entire boundary, while a room-scale demo can require more clear floor space than your current setup provides.

Find free SteamVR demos on Steam

Steam’s catalog changes continuously, so use its filters instead of relying on a fixed list. At the time of the catalog capture on October 16, 2026, the VR-filtered demo search showed 797 results; that count is volatile and will change as developers publish, update or remove demos.

  1. Open Steam’s store search.
  2. Set the product type to Demos.
  3. Apply the VR filter and distinguish between VR Only and VR Supported.
  4. Open each candidate’s store page and inspect its VR Support field, system requirements and input details.

The live catalog has displayed examples such as PROJECT MIX: VR Cyberpunk Bartending Demo, Vuntra City Environment Demo, FORM – Episode 1 Demo and Racket:Nx Demo. These examples are not a permanent recommendation list; availability, labels and regional visibility can change.

Understand the VR labels

Label Meaning for your search What still needs checking
VR Only The title is presented as a virtual-reality application rather than a normal flat-screen game. Headset family, controller layout, tracking mode, room-scale needs and PC requirements.
VR Supported The title supports VR in addition to another play mode or presentation. Whether the demo starts in VR automatically, which headset modes are supported and whether all features work in VR.

Do not infer compatibility from a screenshot or from the word “demo” alone. Read the right side of the store page where Steam lists VR Support, controller information, room-scale details and other requirements.

Add, install and launch a demo

Steam lets you collect a demo without downloading it immediately. This is useful when you want to compare several titles or wait until you have enough disk space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the demo’s store page, choose Add to Library when that control is offered, or choose Install to download it now.
  2. If you added it without installing, open your Steam Library later and select the demo’s install control.
  3. Choose the destination library and confirm the download.
  4. Wait for Steam to finish installation and any required updates.
  5. Start SteamVR, put on the headset and launch the demo from Steam or the SteamVR dashboard.

A demo may have its own store page or appear as an install button on the full game’s page. If Steam presents both a normal desktop launch and a VR launch, select the VR option or start SteamVR first so the title can detect the headset.

Use Steam Link with a Meta Quest headset

Steam Link provides a wireless route for Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro. The computer must run both Steam and SteamVR; the Quest headset does not run the PC demo independently.

Network and PC requirements

  • Windows 10 or newer on the computer.
  • NVIDIA GTX 970-class graphics or better as the minimum listed graphics level for Steam Link.
  • A 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router as the minimum wireless network.
  • Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E is recommended for the headset connection.
  • Meta recommends connecting the PC to the router by Ethernet rather than using Wi-Fi for both the PC and headset.

Pair the headset

  1. Install Steam Link in the Quest headset.
  2. Start Steam on the Windows PC and confirm that SteamVR is installed.
  3. Open Steam Link in the headset.
  4. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions to locate and authorize the PC.
  5. After pairing, launch SteamVR through Steam Link, then start the demo from the SteamVR dashboard or the PC library.

Keep the router close enough to the play area for a strong 5 GHz signal. Other high-bandwidth traffic, walls and competing wireless networks can increase latency or cause a dropped stream even when the PC meets the graphics requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix the most common problems

The headset is not detected

  • Confirm that the manufacturer’s headset software or Windows Mixed Reality Portal is installed and recognizes the device.
  • Check every required USB, HDMI or DisplayPort connection and reseat the cable.
  • Restart Steam, SteamVR and the headset or Portal.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB devices if the headset is sharing a problematic hub.
  • If support requests diagnostics, open SteamVR’s settings and use General > Create System Report.

The demo opens on the monitor instead of in VR

  1. Open the demo’s store page and verify that it is marked VR Only or VR Supported.
  2. Check the listed headset, controller and room-scale details.
  3. Launch SteamVR before starting the demo.
  4. If Steam offers a launch-choice dialog, select the VR mode rather than the desktop mode.

Wireless play is blurry, delayed or disconnects

  • Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet, as Meta recommends.
  • Use the 5 GHz band at minimum; Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is the recommended upgrade.
  • Reduce the distance and obstructions between headset and router.
  • Pause large downloads and other traffic on the local network.
  • Try the demo over a cable to determine whether the problem is networking rather than SteamVR or the title.

The cable or display connection reports an error

Verify that the headset uses the connector you are supplying and that the PC provides the HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 connection listed in Valve’s SteamVR minimums. Adapters, docks and extension cables can introduce another failure point, so test with the shortest supported connection available.

Performance is below expectations

Compare the demo’s own system requirements with the SteamVR baseline and close unnecessary applications. Meeting SteamVR’s minimum only means that the runtime may start; it does not establish that a particular demo will maintain comfortable frame rates. If a title has a higher GPU requirement, that requirement takes precedence.

A practical pre-launch checklist

  • Windows and the headset’s PC software are installed.
  • The PC meets SteamVR’s baseline and the demo’s own requirements.
  • The headset is connected by a supported cable or paired through Steam Link.
  • Steam detects the headset and SteamVR starts without an error.
  • Room Setup has a current floor, play area and boundary.
  • The demo is labeled VR Only or VR Supported and lists compatible controls.
  • The demo has been added to the library or installed.
  • For wireless Quest play, the PC runs Steam and SteamVR, uses Ethernet to the router when possible, and the headset has a strong 5 GHz connection.
