Its presentation uses hand-drawn, pen-and-paper-style art. Combat centers on revolvers, but the game also includes stealth and period weapons such as Winchesters, double-barreled guns and Gatling guns. Progression includes weapon or character upgrades, and the campaign includes train-robbery missions.

Fanatical reported a 75% “Mostly Positive” Steam user rating on its 2026 listing. The same retailer page showed 4.2 out of 5 from 118 user ratings. Those are retailer-page aggregates, not the result of an independent review study, so treat them as a snapshot of user sentiment rather than a performance or quality guarantee.

The Windows figures are the historical minimums shown with the game listing. They are useful for checking whether an older PC is in the right range, but they do not replace the current Steam page or your operating system’s compatibility checks.
Install 12 is Better Than 6 on a Windows PC
1. Install the Steam client
- Download the Steam installer from Valve’s official Steam website.
- Run the installer and complete the setup prompts.
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that owns 12 is Better Than 6, or create an account if you do not have one.
Keep the Steam client updated. An outdated client can interfere with game installation or launching even when the computer meets the game’s listed hardware requirements.

- Use Steam’s store search to find 12 is Better Than 6.
- Purchase it through Steam, or redeem a legitimate Steam key through the account that will play it.
- After the transaction or redemption completes, open Library.
A key must be valid for Steam and for your region where regional restrictions apply. The game should appear in the account’s Library after a successful purchase or redemption.

3. Select a library drive and install
- In Library, select 12 is Better Than 6.
- Click Install.
- Choose one of the available Steam library drives when prompted.
- Confirm the download and wait for Steam to finish.
Reserve at least the listing’s 300 MB of free storage. Steam and the operating system can need additional working space for downloads, updates and temporary files, so avoid filling a drive to its last few megabytes.
4. Check the listed Windows minimums
The game listing gives these minimum specifications:
- Operating system: Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
- Processor: 2.9 GHz Pentium-equivalent CPU.
- Memory: 2 GB RAM.
- Graphics: 512 MB DirectX 9-compatible graphics card with Shader Model 3.0.
- Graphics API: DirectX 9.0c.
- Storage: 300 MB free space.
These are minimums, not a promise of a particular frame rate or image quality. The listing names older Windows versions, so if you are using a newer release, rely on the current Steam compatibility information and your own system’s behavior rather than assuming that every modern configuration is covered by the old specification table.

When the download finishes, select Play from the game’s Library page. If Steam shows a pending update, let it complete before launching. The first start can also take longer while Steam finishes installation tasks.

Install and play it on a Mac
What is confirmed
Fanatical’s listing states that 12 is Better Than 6 supports macOS. The available listing does not provide a detailed, current Mac hardware table, so it is not possible to promise support for a particular Mac model from the published minimums alone.
Mac installation steps
- Download and install the Steam client for macOS.
- Sign in with the Steam account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open Library and select 12 is Better Than 6.
- Choose Install and select an available Steam library location.
- After the download completes, choose Play.
Check the macOS version before buying or troubleshooting
Steam advises checking compatibility and the required operating-system version on each game’s store page. Open the live 12 is Better Than 6 page and read its macOS requirements before purchase. This check matters especially when the Mac is running an older or newer macOS release than the game’s current build expects.
If the game does not appear in your Mac Library, verify that you are signed in to the purchasing account and that the key was redeemed on that account. - Start the Deck and open Gaming Mode.

2. Understand the “Playable” label
Steam Deck and SteamOS list the game as Playable, not fully Verified. Playable means the game can work on Deck but may require some manual attention. Valve identifies touchscreen or virtual-keyboard interaction and small in-game text as common reasons a title receives a Playable rating.

The label does not by itself identify which adjustment this particular game will need. Start with the default control layout and on-screen text. If the game launches and the controls are usable, no further change may be necessary.
3. Force a Proton tool when launch behavior needs help
If the game will not start, immediately closes, or presents incorrect controls, use Steam’s per-game compatibility setting. Valve documents this path:
- Highlight the game in your Library.
- Press the Deck’s Menu button.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the latest available Proton tool, then close Properties and try Play again.
Proton is the compatibility layer Steam uses to run many Windows games on SteamOS. Forcing a tool changes the game’s launch environment; it does not change your purchase or install location.

4. Update and restart before deeper troubleshooting
- Install any available SteamOS updates.
- Restart the Deck.
- Launch the game again from Library.
Valve recommends checking for updates and restarting as first troubleshooting steps. Do those before repeatedly changing compatibility settings, because an interrupted update or temporary Steam process can look like a game-specific failure.

Use a microSD card for the Deck installation
A microSD card is optional, but it is useful when internal Deck storage is already occupied by other games. Valve supports any UHS-I microSD card rated class 3 or better.
Format the card in SteamOS
- Insert the microSD card into the Deck.
- Open Steam > Settings > System.
- Select Format SD card.
- Confirm the format and wait for SteamOS to prepare the card.
Formatting erases the card, so copy any files you need before confirming. After formatting, return to the game’s install prompt and select the card as the library location. Choose capacity according to the size of your wider game library; the game’s Windows listing calls for about 300 MB, but the card may also hold updates and other titles.
Troubleshoot the first launch
The game is missing from Library
- Confirm that Steam is using the account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- For a key, verify that redemption completed successfully and that the key was intended for Steam.
- Use Steam’s search in Library rather than assuming the title is installed under a different category.
Install fails or Steam reports insufficient space
- Check the selected library drive and free at least the listed 300 MB.
- Leave additional headroom for Steam’s download and update files.
- On Deck, select a formatted microSD card if internal storage is full.
Windows launch fails
- Update the Steam client.
- Confirm the PC is within the listed processor, memory, graphics, DirectX and storage minimums.
- Restart Steam and try launching again after any queued update finishes.
Mac launch fails
- Open the live Steam store page and verify the required macOS version.
- Confirm that the account owns the game and that the Mac Steam client is current.
- Do not assume support for a specific Mac model when the published listing does not provide a current hardware table.
Deck launch or controls are wrong
- Install SteamOS updates and restart the Deck.
- Open Properties > Compatibility and force the latest available Proton tool.

Which platform should you use?
Choose Windows when you want the clearest published minimums
The Windows listing provides a concrete baseline: 2 GB RAM, a 2.9 GHz Pentium-equivalent processor, a 512 MB DirectX 9/Shader Model 3.0 graphics card and 300 MB of free storage. Install through Steam and launch from Library.
Choose Mac when your Steam page confirms the operating system
The game is reported to support macOS, but the current required macOS version must be checked on the live Steam page. That page is the deciding source for whether a particular Mac configuration is supported.
Choose Steam Deck for handheld play if manual setup is acceptable
The Deck listing is Playable, which is encouraging but less automatic than Verified. You should be prepared to update SteamOS, restart, and force a Proton tool if the default launch or controls are unsuitable. A formatted UHS-I class 3-or-better microSD card provides an alternative install location.
What to expect once it starts
12 is Better Than 6 is built around deliberate top-down Western encounters rather than a modern first-person shooter presentation. The hand-drawn visual style, revolver-led gunfights and stealth options support different approaches to the same hostile environments. As the campaign progresses, upgrades expand the available approach, while period weapons range from Winchesters and double-barreled guns to Gatling guns. Train-robbery missions add a distinct objective type to the desert journey.
The game is single-player, so there is no multiplayer setup to configure. Once Steam finishes the installation and the platform-specific compatibility checks above are satisfied, launching from the Library is all that is required to begin.
