Android Auto does not work like a separate app store on your dashboard. It is integrated into supported Android phones, so you install compatible services on the phone, sign in when required, connect the phone to a compatible car or stereo, and then open those services from the car-display launcher. Only apps whose developers have added Android Auto support can appear there.

What you need before installing anything

Check the connection method first. Wired and wireless Android Auto have different requirements, and a phone app cannot compensate for an incompatible vehicle or stereo.

Connection Phone requirement Vehicle or stereo requirement Other requirement
Wired Android Auto Android 11.0 or higher under Google’s current getting-started requirements Compatible car or stereo Active data plan and a high-quality USB cable
Wireless Android Auto Compatible phone Compatible car or stereo with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support Active data service

Compatibility is model- and region-dependent. Confirm that your vehicle or aftermarket stereo supports Android Auto with its manufacturer before troubleshooting the phone. For a wired installation, the cable must carry data, fit both ports, and be suitable for the vehicle’s USB connection; a cable that only charges a phone is not an appropriate choice.

How Android Auto handles apps

Android Auto is integrated into supported Android phones; Google’s help documentation states that you do not need to download Android Auto separately. The phone remains the place where you install, update, and authenticate apps. The car display presents a driving-oriented selection of those phone apps.

App availability is controlled by the developer. Installing an arbitrary Android app does not make it eligible for the dashboard launcher. Google describes supported services for music, messaging, news, navigation, and other functions. An app may therefore be present on the phone but absent from Android Auto because its developer has not enabled Android Auto compatibility.

Google also says that you must be signed in to your Google Account with personalization enabled to see all compatible apps in the Google Play Store. If the Play Store appears to show fewer compatible choices than expected, check that account state before assuming the car connection is at fault.

Install a compatible app on your phone

  1. Sign in to the right Google Account. On the phone, use the account that you intend to use with Android Auto and make sure personalization is enabled. This allows the Play Store to show the full set of compatible apps available to that account.
  2. Open Google Play. Search for the navigation, media, messaging, or news service you want. Read the listing for Android Auto compatibility; a normal phone app is not automatically a dashboard app.
  3. Install or update the app. Use the current Play Store version. If it is already installed, apply any available update before connecting the phone.
  4. Open the app once on the phone. Complete its initial setup and sign in if the service requires an account. Media apps, in particular, must be Android Auto-compatible and signed in on the phone before they can be used in the car.
  5. Connect the phone to Android Auto. Use the wired or wireless method supported by your vehicle. The first connection may require accepting prompts on the phone and the car display.

Installing several services does not guarantee that every one will be visible. The launcher filters the phone’s apps to the subset that the developers have made compatible with Android Auto.

Connect Android Auto and open an installed app

Wired connection

  1. Start the compatible car or stereo and leave it in a state that accepts phone projection.
  2. Plug the phone into the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port with a high-quality, data-capable USB cable.
  3. Unlock the phone if prompted and accept the Android Auto permissions or pairing prompts shown on the phone and car screen.
  4. On the car display, tap the app launcher.
  5. Select the compatible navigation or media app you installed. Navigation apps can provide voice guidance, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance when those features are supported by the selected service.

Wireless connection

  1. Confirm that both the phone and vehicle support wireless Android Auto and that the vehicle supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  2. Make sure the phone has active data service. Wireless projection depends on the phone and vehicle meeting the compatibility requirements; a phone that supports only wired projection cannot be made wireless by installing another app.
  3. Complete the vehicle’s wireless pairing process, following the prompts displayed by the car and phone.
  4. After Android Auto appears on the car screen, tap the app launcher and select the compatible app.

Once the launcher is open, choose a navigation or media icon rather than trying to launch the full phone version of an app. Android Auto exposes the driving-compatible interface supplied by the developer.

Which kinds of apps can appear?

Category What Android Auto can provide What you must do on the phone
Navigation Voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, and lane guidance through Google Maps or another compatible navigation app Install a compatible navigation app and complete any required sign-in
Media Playback controls and access to a compatible media service Install the compatible app and sign in before starting Android Auto
Messaging Access to compatible messaging services through the Android Auto interface Install a service whose developer supports Android Auto and finish its phone setup
News Access to compatible news services Install the compatible service; availability is determined by the developer

The category alone is not enough. Two apps that both provide audio or messaging may have different Android Auto support, so check each app’s Play Store information and developer documentation.

Why an installed app is missing from the launcher

Work through these checks in order. They separate an app-compatibility problem from a phone-maintenance problem.

1. Confirm Android Auto support

An app can be fully functional on the phone and still be excluded from the car launcher. Verify that the developer explicitly supports Android Auto. If support is absent, there is no Android Auto launcher setting that can add the app.

2. Open and authenticate the app on the phone

Launch the app on the phone while it is connected to the account you use for Android Auto. Complete sign-in and any first-run setup, then reconnect or reopen the launcher. This is required for media apps and can also resolve services that have not yet completed their initial setup.

3. Check Samsung battery-management settings

Google notes that Samsung battery management can temporarily disable an installed app. Open the affected app on the phone to re-enable it, then open the Android Auto launcher again.

4. Check the account and app version

Make sure the phone is signed in to the intended Google Account with personalization enabled, then update the app from Google Play. The compatible-app list shown by the Play Store can depend on that account state.

5. Check the connection and vehicle

For wired use, verify the cable, the vehicle’s compatible USB port, active data service, and the phone’s Android version. For wireless use, verify 5 GHz Wi-Fi support on the vehicle, active data service, and compatibility on both sides. If the car itself does not support Android Auto, no app installation can create that support.

How to organize apps in Android Auto

Android Auto gives you an app launcher for compatible services and a recent-apps area for quick access to the most recently used media app. Open the launcher from the car display and choose the service you want; the recent-media area is useful when you regularly switch between a small number of playback apps.

Google’s current Android Auto documentation explains opening the launcher and using recent media apps, but it does not establish one universal drag-and-drop or manual reorder control for launcher icons across all phones, Android versions, and car head units. Do not assume that long-pressing an icon will work. Ordering and customization are device- and version-specific unless your phone or vehicle documentation provides a documented control.

What you can reliably do

  • Install only the compatible apps you actually use, so the launcher contains fewer choices.
  • Open the app launcher and select the service you need while the vehicle is stopped and it is safe to interact with the display.
  • Use the recent-media area for quick access to the most recently used compatible media app.
  • Check the car manufacturer’s instructions or the phone’s Android Auto documentation if your particular system exposes an ordering or customization option.

What you should not expect universally

  • A freely rearrangeable grid on every Android phone and head unit.
  • A hidden phone app to appear merely because it is installed.
  • The same launcher order or customization controls after a phone, Android, or vehicle software change.

Choose the right USB cable for wired Android Auto

Google’s wired requirement is a high-quality USB cable. Match the cable to the actual connection rather than buying on charging speed alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check Why it matters What to verify
Connector fit The cable must plug into both the phone and the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable port Match each end to the phone socket and vehicle USB socket
Data capability Android Auto needs phone-to-car data communication, not power only Use a cable designed for data transfer; avoid a charging-only cable
Length Excess cable can be difficult to route and a very short cable may not reach comfortably Choose a length that reaches the intended phone location without strain
Vehicle-port compatibility Some vehicles expose more than one USB port but do not make every port Android Auto-capable Use the port identified by the vehicle or stereo manufacturer for phone projection

No particular cable brand or model is established for this setup. If Android Auto disconnects repeatedly, test the same phone and vehicle with another known-good, data-capable cable before changing app settings.

A practical fault-isolation checklist

  • The launcher is empty: verify that at least one installed app explicitly supports Android Auto, then open it on the phone and sign in.
  • One app is missing: check developer compatibility, update it, and inspect Samsung’s unused-app battery settings.
  • Wired Android Auto never starts: confirm Android 11.0 or higher, active data service, the correct vehicle USB port, and a high-quality data cable.
  • Wireless projection is unavailable: confirm that the phone and car both support wireless Android Auto and that the vehicle supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • The app used to appear but disappeared: open it on the phone to re-enable it, check for an update, and then reopen the launcher.
  • You cannot reorder icons: treat that as a platform or head-unit limitation unless the specific device documentation describes a customization control.

The dependable setup sequence

The shortest reliable workflow is: verify vehicle and phone compatibility; sign in to the Google Account with personalization enabled; install or update an Android Auto-compatible app from Google Play; open and authenticate it on the phone; connect by supported wired or wireless projection; and choose it from the car-display app launcher. If it is missing, check compatibility and Samsung battery management before looking for an icon-reordering setting.
