Install an Xbox demo from the Microsoft Store or your library, play it from the console’s internal drive, then uninstall it when you are finished. Removing a demo frees its installed space; it does not permanently remove your entitlement. If the demo is still offered for your account and region, download it again from My games & apps > Ready to install or from its Store page. For Series X|S, a compatible USB drive can serve as an archive, while an Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card is the practical choice when supported games must remain ready to play.
What happens when you install an Xbox demo
An Xbox demo is installed content, so it uses the same internal storage pool as a full digital game. The Microsoft Store shows the controlling size for that particular title. Treat that figure as a minimum planning number: the demo may also receive an update, and the console needs enough free space to complete the download and installation.
Xbox console guidance lists internal storage capacities of 512GB or 1TB, depending on the console model. The same guidance identifies three ways to recover or add capacity: uninstall games you are not actively playing, connect an external hard drive, or add a storage expansion card for Xbox Series X|S. The capacity figures are from Microsoft’s console guide and were verified on October 13, 2026; the guide does not state a publication date.
Because demos are usually short experiments, the most efficient routine is to keep only the titles you are currently testing installed. Completed demos can be removed and downloaded again later, subject to availability in your account and region.

Check free space before downloading
Do this check before starting a large demo rather than waiting for an installation failure.
- Open the console’s Games & apps area and open its storage view.
- Check the available space on the internal drive, which is the destination for a normal installation.
- Open the demo’s Microsoft Store page and note the listed install size.
- Leave additional headroom for updates and the installation process. The Store’s size for that title is the number to use; there is no universal “demo size” that applies to every game.
- If the remaining capacity is tight, remove an inactive game or demo before starting the download, or decide whether an external drive or Series X|S expansion card fits your use.
Storage totals can change after updates and after you move titles between drives. Recheck the available figure immediately before a batch of downloads, especially when several demos are queued.
Install a demo from the Store or your library
Digital games and other content can be bought and downloaded directly from an Xbox console or from xbox.com. A demo that is offered to your account follows the same basic installation process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the Microsoft Store on the Xbox, or open the owned and available-items list in your library.
- Search for the exact game and select the entry marked as a demo or trial.
- Choose the install or download command and confirm the destination if the console asks.
- Watch the queue until the installation completes. A title that appears in the queue is not necessarily ready to launch; wait for the console to report that installation is complete.
- Launch the demo from My games & apps and test it normally.
Some Store pages contain multiple editions or add-ons. Select the demo itself rather than a soundtrack, add-on, or full-game upgrade. If the Store offers only the complete game, the demo may no longer be distributed for that account or region.
Keep only active tests installed
Use a simple “active test” rule: leave a demo installed while you are evaluating it, and remove it when you have decided whether to keep playing, buy the full game, or move on. Xbox explicitly recommends uninstalling games that are not being actively played as a way to gain space.

Uninstall a finished demo
- Open My games & apps and locate the demo.
- Open the title’s management menu.
- Choose the uninstall or remove option and confirm.
- Return to the storage view and verify that the freed capacity is reflected.
Uninstalling removes the installed files from the selected drive. It does not guarantee that every piece of title-related data has the same lifetime, however; local persistent storage and saved progress are separate issues described below.
Organize a testing queue
- Keep a small set of demos you can realistically test in the next week or two.
- Remove duplicate editions and unused trial files rather than waiting for the drive to become completely full.
- Before installing several large demos, finish or delete the ones you have already evaluated.
- Record the titles you want to revisit. That list is useful if a demo later disappears from the Store or Ready to install list.
Download a removed demo again
Removing a demo does not create a permanent block on reinstalling it. The title must still be offered to your account in your current region, and the publisher or Microsoft must still expose the demo for download.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Ready to install
- Open My games & apps.
- Open Ready to install.
- Find the demo in the list and select it.
- Choose install and monitor the download queue.
Microsoft Support specifically directs Xbox One users to My games & apps > Ready to install when a game or app is not currently visible on the console. Labels can vary slightly by console generation and system update, but the library’s not-installed section is the place to start.
Use the Store page instead
If the demo is not listed under Ready to install, search for it in the Microsoft Store while signed in to the account that originally accessed it. A Store search can distinguish between a delisted demo, a title that is hidden by a filter, and a product that is available only in another region. If neither location offers an install command, availability—not the previous uninstall—is the likely limitation.
What uninstalling does to saves and settings
Do not assume that reinstalling restores every local detail. Microsoft’s technical documentation says that title-specific persistent local storage is tied to the title’s install lifetime. When the title is uninstalled, that associated local storage is removed, and it is not automatically restored when the title is installed again.

The exact behavior of a demo’s saves, settings, cache, and checkpoints is title-dependent. Before uninstalling, check the individual title’s support information if a particular local configuration or progress record matters to you.
Progress that a title supports through Xbox-connected or cloud storage can behave differently from local demo data. A cloud-backed save may be available after reinstalling and signing in, while a setting or cache stored only on the console may not be. The safe assumption is that local-only information can be lost when the title is removed; do not treat an uninstall as a guaranteed backup operation.
Choose the right way to save space
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall and reinstall | A few demos tested occasionally | Requires another download, and the demo must remain available to your account and region |
| Compatible USB external hard drive or SSD | Low-cost archiving and moving less-used titles | Series X|S-optimized titles commonly must be moved back to internal storage or a compatible expansion card before they can be played |
| Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card | Keeping supported Series X|S titles ready on added storage | Higher hardware cost; verify the card model and console compatibility |
When uninstalling is the better option
Uninstalling is free and requires no additional hardware. It is the sensible choice when you test demos one at a time, have a reliable internet connection, and do not need instant access to a large backlog. It also avoids buying storage for titles you may never launch again.
When a USB drive helps
A compatible USB external hard drive or SSD can hold or move installed titles, allowing you to clear internal capacity without deleting every file. This is most useful as an archive or transfer location. Storage guidance notes that Series X|S-optimized games stored on USB generally must be moved back to the internal drive or to a compatible expansion card before play. Therefore, a USB drive can reduce redownloads while still requiring a transfer before launching affected titles.
Use the drive for demos you expect to revisit, older titles, or games waiting for a later play session. Check the console’s compatibility requirements before buying a drive, and keep the drive connected while moving or launching content.

When an expansion card is worth considering
Xbox identifies the Series X|S storage expansion card as the dedicated way to add console space alongside the internal drive. It is designed for supported Series X|S titles that you want to keep ready to play without moving them back and forth. Verify that the card is compatible with your console model before purchase; no universal capacity, price, or retailer for these cards is specified.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical demo-management routine
- Audit: Check internal free space and the Store size before every substantial download.
- Install: Download only the demo you can test soon, unless you have deliberately chosen an archive drive.
- Evaluate: Play the demo and decide whether it merits continued storage.
- Protect important progress: Confirm how that title handles cloud-connected saves before removing it if local progress matters.
- Remove: Uninstall finished demos from the title’s management menu.
- Recover: Reinstall from Ready to install or the Store when the demo is still offered.
- Archive selectively: Move infrequently used titles to a compatible USB drive, remembering that Series X|S-optimized games may need to move back before play.
- Expand only when needed: Choose a Series X|S expansion card when repeatedly moving supported titles is more inconvenient than the hardware cost.
Troubleshooting common storage and reinstall problems
The demo will not install because there is not enough space
Compare the Store’s listed size with the current internal free-space figure. Remove one or more inactive demos, then check the storage view again before restarting the download. If you regularly encounter this problem, use a USB drive for archiving or consider a compatible Series X|S expansion card for titles that must stay playable from added storage.
The demo disappeared after you uninstalled it
Open My games & apps > Ready to install first. If it is absent, search the Microsoft Store while signed in to the original account. A missing install command can mean that the demo is no longer offered, is unavailable in the current region, or is listed under a different product entry.
A game on the USB drive will not launch
Check whether it is Series X|S-optimized. Such titles commonly need to be moved to the internal drive or a compatible expansion card before play. Use the console’s move or copy controls, wait for the transfer to finish, and then launch the internal or expansion-card copy.
Progress or settings are missing after reinstalling
Microsoft says title-specific persistent local storage is removed during uninstall and is not automatically restored. Review the title’s support information to determine whether the missing item was local-only or backed by Xbox-connected storage. Reinstalling cannot recreate local data that was deleted with the original installation.
The queue appears stuck
Confirm that the console still has enough internal capacity, that the selected account can access the demo, and that the title has not been replaced by another edition in the Store. If the title is on a USB archive, make sure the drive is connected and recognized before attempting a move or reinstall.
