Install RabbitMQ from Team RabbitMQ’s signed Debian or Ubuntu repositories, not an unpinned package file. On a supported VPS—Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 or 26.04, or Debian 11, 12 or 13—the package creates a systemd service that runs as the unprivileged rabbitmq account. After installation, replace the local-only guest account with a generated-credential user, create an application-specific virtual host, restrict its permissions, and expose the management and metrics endpoints only where they are needed.
This guide covers installation, service administration, first-run hardening, firewall planning, management access, Prometheus metrics, file-descriptor limits, troubleshooting and the choice between a single VPS, a cluster and a managed deployment.
What you need before installing
RabbitMQ packages are tightly coupled to Erlang. A repository that supplies a current RabbitMQ release but an incompatible Erlang runtime can leave you with failed dependencies or a broker that will not start. Use the operating-system and architecture combinations supported by the current Team RabbitMQ Debian/Ubuntu guide.
Supported operating systems
| Family | Supported releases in the current guide |
|---|---|
| Ubuntu | 22.04, 24.04 and 26.04 |
| Debian | 11, 12 and 13 |
Confirm the release and codename before adding a repository:
#1 Best Overall
cat /etc/os-release
uname -m
dpkg --print-architecture
The quick-start examples target amd64. An arm64 VPS needs an Erlang source that explicitly supports that architecture; do not copy amd64 repository entries onto an arm64 machine.
Plan capacity and access
There is no universal VPS size that guarantees a particular message rate. Measure the workload you actually intend to run: publish and consume rates, payload size, durable versus transient queues, concurrent connections, queue depth, disk growth and memory use. Decide which networks need AMQP client access, which administrators need the browser UI, and which monitoring system will scrape metrics before opening firewall ports.
Install RabbitMQ from the signed repositories
-
Install repository prerequisites
Update the package index and install the tools required to import a signing key and use HTTPS repositories:
sudo apt-get update -y sudo apt-get install -y curl gnupg apt-transport-https -
Install Team RabbitMQ’s signing key
Create the keyring directory and import the signing key using the current key-import command in Team RabbitMQ’s Debian/Ubuntu installation guide. Store the result at
/usr/share/keyrings/com.rabbitmq.team.gpgand ensure the file is readable by APT:sudo install -d -m 0755 /usr/share/keyrings sudo chmod 0644 /usr/share/keyrings/com.rabbitmq.team.gpgUsing the published signed-key command matters: it lets APT verify that the Erlang and RabbitMQ packages came from the expected repository.
-
Create the repository list
Create
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/rabbitmq.listand paste the Ubuntu or Debian repository entries for your exact codename from the current Team RabbitMQ guide. Keep the Erlang and RabbitMQ lines on the same supported release and reference the keyring withsigned-by=/usr/share/keyrings/com.rabbitmq.team.gpg. Do not substitute a different distribution codename because it appears newer or older. The Tool Desk

Install Erlang and RabbitMQ
Install the Erlang package set listed by the current guide, followed by
rabbitmq-server. The repository installation method is preferred to downloading a standalone.deb: APT can resolve and update the Erlang dependencies as a unit.Rank #2
sudo apt-get install -y rabbitmq-serverIf APT asks for Erlang packages separately, use the complete supported list from the same guide rather than mixing distribution packages with repository packages. Avoid forcing a package with
dpkg --force; that hides the dependency problem instead of fixing it. -
Confirm that the package started
The Debian package normally starts the daemon automatically. Check the service immediately:

Start, stop and inspect the RabbitMQ service
The package creates a systemd unit named rabbitmq-server and runs it under the non-privileged rabbitmq account. Use systemd for lifecycle operations instead of launching the Erlang process manually.
| Task | Command |
|---|---|
| Show state and recent unit information | sudo systemctl status rabbitmq-server |
| Start the broker | sudo systemctl start rabbitmq-server |
| Stop the broker | sudo systemctl stop rabbitmq-server |
| Restart after a configuration or limit change | sudo systemctl restart rabbitmq-server |
| Start automatically at boot | sudo systemctl enable rabbitmq-server |
| Read this-boot service logs | sudo journalctl -u rabbitmq-server -b |
When a restart fails, read the journal before changing files. RabbitMQ’s diagnostics commands can report node reachability, listeners, memory and effective limits:
sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics status
sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics listeners
sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics environment
Use the commands that exist in the installed release; diagnostic output is more reliable than assuming a default configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHarden the first-run node
A blank node creates a guest user with password guest. By default, RabbitMQ refuses remote connections made with that account; it is intended for host-local use. Production environments should create a named account with generated credentials before an application connects, then remove guest or replace its password with a generated value.
Create a generated-credential application user
Generate a password on the VPS and pass it only to the account-creation command. Protect the terminal session and clear the shell variable afterward:
PASS=$(openssl rand -hex 24)
sudo rabbitmqctl add_user app_user "$PASS"
unset PASS
Do not put a long-lived password in a script committed to source control or in a world-readable shell history. Store it in the application’s secret-management system and rotate it according to your operational policy.
Create a dedicated virtual host
A virtual host separates exchanges, queues, bindings and permissions on one RabbitMQ node. Give each application or trust boundary its own vhost:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchsudo rabbitmqctl add_vhost app-vhost
Grant only the permissions the application needs
RabbitMQ checks three regular-expression permissions for every vhost: configure, write and read. The all-access example below is useful for a controlled test account, but it is broader than most production applications need:
sudo rabbitmqctl set_permissions -p 'app-vhost' 'app_user' '.*' '.*' '.*'
Prefer expressions that match only the resources the application owns. For example, if its queues and exchanges begin with app.:
sudo rabbitmqctl set_permissions -p 'app-vhost' 'app_user' '^app.' '^app.' '^app.'
Adjust those expressions for your naming scheme. A consumer that only reads existing queues can receive an empty configure and write expression; a publisher may need write access but no read access. Test the resulting permissions with the application’s real connection rather than granting .* as a permanent workaround.
List, review and remove accounts
sudo rabbitmqctl list_users
sudo rabbitmqctl list_vhosts
sudo rabbitmqctl list_permissions -p 'app-vhost'
sudo rabbitmqctl delete_user guest
Delete guest only after confirming that no local automation still depends on it. If you must retain it temporarily, change its password to a generated value and keep remote access blocked.
Enable and secure the management UI
The rabbitmq_management plugin provides a browser interface and HTTP API for queues, exchanges, users, vhosts and permissions. Enable it with:
sudo rabbitmq-plugins enable rabbitmq_management
The default management UI/API endpoint is TCP port 15672. It is not the AMQP protocol listener, so an AMQP client cannot connect to 15672 merely because the browser page loads.
Rank #4
Restrict administration at the network boundary
- Open port 15672 only to an administrator network, VPN or bastion host; do not expose it to the entire internet by default.
- Open the AMQP client listener only to application networks that need it.
- Keep the Prometheus listener closed to public traffic and allow only your monitoring system.
- Confirm the actual listeners and bound interfaces with
sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics listenersand your VPS firewall rules.
Management access and messaging access are separate controls. A user still needs valid vhost permissions to perform messaging operations, even when it has a management tag. Assign a management tag deliberately; do not give every application account administrative visibility.
Add production monitoring with Prometheus metrics
The built-in management charts are useful for immediate inspection, but production history, alerting and long-term retention belong in an external monitoring system. Enable RabbitMQ’s Prometheus plugin:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo rabbitmq-plugins enable rabbitmq_prometheus
The Prometheus-compatible endpoint listens on port 15692 by default. Configure your Prometheus-compatible collector to scrape that endpoint from the monitoring network, then build alerts around the measurements that matter to your workload: node health, memory alarms, connection count, queue depth, consumer availability and publish or deliver rates.
Keep retention and dashboards outside the broker. External Prometheus/Grafana-style systems or an ELK-style stack provide longer history and alerting without coupling the broker’s availability to its own short-term UI charts.
Set file-descriptor limits before serious load
RabbitMQ consumes file descriptors for sockets, queue files and other resources. A low per-process limit can look like random connection failures under load even when CPU and memory are available. Check the current effective limit:
sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics status
sudo systemctl show rabbitmq-server --property=LimitNOFILE
Create a systemd drop-in
The official Debian/Ubuntu guide documents a drop-in at /etc/systemd/system/rabbitmq-server.service.d/limits.conf. Create it with a value appropriate for your measured workload; 64000 is the guide’s example:
sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/systemd/system/rabbitmq-server.service.d
sudoedit /etc/systemd/system/rabbitmq-server.service.d/limits.conf
[Service]
LimitNOFILE=64000
Apply and verify it:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart rabbitmq-server
sudo systemctl show rabbitmq-server --property=LimitNOFILE
sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics status
Values above 65536 also require attention to Erlang’s ERL_MAX_PORTS. Raising only the systemd limit does not guarantee that the Erlang runtime can use the additional ports. Check both settings before a load test and verify the process limits after every package or service-unit change.
Firewall and VPS networking checklist
RabbitMQ uses separate listeners for messaging, administration and metrics. The exact AMQP listener port and bindings should be confirmed on your node rather than assumed. Before opening a firewall rule:
Best Value
- Run
sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics listenersand note each protocol, port and interface. - Allow the AMQP port only from application subnets.
- Allow 15672 only from the administrator network if the management plugin is enabled.
- Allow 15692 only from the Prometheus collector if the metrics plugin is enabled.
- Keep all other listeners closed and re-check the VPS provider’s security group as well as the host firewall.
From an approved client network, test reachability with a TCP tool and then test a real authenticated RabbitMQ connection. A successful TCP connection proves only that a port is reachable; it does not prove that the user, vhost or permissions are correct.
Choose the right deployment shape
A single VPS is not equivalent to a highly available cluster. Compare the operational trade-offs before putting a critical workload on one node.
| Option | Operational ownership | Failure tolerance | Latency and networking | Monitoring and recovery | Cost pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-node VPS | You patch RabbitMQ, Erlang, the OS, firewall and disks. | A node or VPS failure interrupts service unless the application has a separate recovery design. | Usually the simplest and lowest-latency path when applications share the VPS network or region. | You must export definitions, back up what your workload requires, test restore procedures and operate alerts. | One server plus storage, with staff time for operations. |
| RabbitMQ cluster | You operate cluster membership, upgrades, partitions, node replacement and client failover. | Can tolerate selected node failures when designed and tested correctly; it is not automatic protection from every application or storage failure. | Inter-node network quality and application connection strategy become important. | Requires cluster-aware monitoring, tested recovery and a definition/data strategy. | More nodes, storage and operational complexity. |
| Managed RabbitMQ service | The provider handles much of the patching and infrastructure recovery; you still own users, vhosts, application behavior and data policy. | Depends on the provider’s architecture, service tier and region. | Latency depends on the service region and private-network integration. | Usually offers integrated metrics and backups, but verify retention, export and restore guarantees. | Recurring service charge instead of owning all infrastructure. |
Whichever model you choose, document how definitions, credentials, durable message data and monitoring configuration are recovered. A definition export alone is not a substitute for a tested data-recovery plan.
Troubleshoot common VPS failures
The package cannot be located or dependencies conflict
Check the OS codename and architecture, inspect /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rabbitmq.list, and run sudo apt-get update again. Erlang and RabbitMQ entries must target the same supported release. Remove stale or mixed-distribution entries rather than forcing installation with dpkg.
The service exits immediately
Read the unit journal:
sudo systemctl status rabbitmq-server
sudo journalctl -u rabbitmq-server -b --no-pager
Then run sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics status. Look for an Erlang version mismatch, a damaged data directory, a hostname or cookie problem, a port collision, insufficient permissions or a full disk. Correct the underlying error and restart; do not repeatedly restart a node while ignoring the first diagnostic message.
Recommended Free Tools
Remote login with guest fails
This is expected behavior. The default guest account is restricted to host-local use. Create a named user with generated credentials, add the correct vhost permissions, and test that account instead.
The browser cannot reach the management page
Confirm that rabbitmq_management is enabled, the service is running and a listener exists on 15672:
sudo rabbitmq-plugins list
sudo rabbitmq-diagnostics listeners
sudo ss -ltnp
If the listener exists locally but not remotely, inspect both the VPS firewall and the provider security group. If the page loads but operations fail, check the user’s management tag and its permissions on the requested vhost.
Connections fail during load
Check the effective LimitNOFILE, process limits, memory alarms, disk space, connection count and queue growth. Raise limits only after measuring the workload; also configure ERL_MAX_PORTS when selecting a value above 65536.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Run a supported Ubuntu or Debian release and verify amd64 versus arm64 compatibility.
- Use Team RabbitMQ’s signed repositories with aligned Erlang and RabbitMQ entries.
- Confirm
rabbitmq-serveris active under the non-privilegedrabbitmqaccount. - Replace or remove the default
guestaccount before remote application access. - Create a separate vhost and least-privilege configure, write and read expressions for each application.
- Enable the management plugin only when needed and restrict port 15672.
- Enable the Prometheus plugin for production history and alerting, restricting port 15692 to the collector.
- Check file-descriptor limits before load testing and apply the systemd drop-in when required.
- Export definitions and test recovery instead of assuming a running node is a backup.
- Review listeners, firewall rules, queue depth, memory, disk and connection counts as part of routine operations.
