For a Steam installation of Total War: ROME REMASTERED, subscribe to a mod from the game’s Workshop page, then activate it in the launcher’s Pre-Game Options Mod Manager. A Workshop subscription downloads the files; it does not automatically make every subscribed mod active. Use the Mod Manager to control what loads, keep a record of campaign-critical mods, and use Steam’s file verification tools when a change or game update causes trouble.
What the safe workflow looks like
There are three separate actions that are often confused:
- Subscribe: Steam obtains and stores the Workshop files.
- Enable: the remaster’s launcher loads a selected subscribed mod when the game starts.
- Unsubscribe or delete: the files are removed or detached from your Workshop list, depending on which control you use.
Keeping those actions separate makes troubleshooting much easier. You can leave a mod downloaded but disabled while testing a vanilla campaign, or re-enable it later without downloading it again. If a mod is causing a crash, disabling it in the launcher is the least destructive first test; uninstalling and unsubscribing are cleanup steps.

Workshop subscription versus manual copying

For a supported remaster such as ROME REMASTERED, Workshop installation is the safer default because Steam handles the download. Manual installation is appropriate only when the author specifically requires it or when the mod is not distributed through Workshop. Do not mix an old manual copy with a Workshop version unless the author documents that arrangement; duplicate files make it difficult to identify which version is loading.
Install a Workshop mod on Windows
The following procedure uses Steam and the Windows version covered by Feral’s support guidance.
- Open Steam and find the game. In the Steam Library, select Total War: ROME REMASTERED.
- Open the Community Hub. Select the game’s Community Hub, then open its Workshop tab.
- Read the Workshop listing before subscribing. Check the supported game version, required dependencies, compatibility notes, installation instructions, and whether the author limits the mod to a new campaign or a particular faction.
- Subscribe. Click Subscribe on the mod’s Workshop page. Steam downloads and installs the subscribed item automatically. Wait for the Steam download to finish before launching the game.
- Launch the game. Start the remaster normally. On the next launch, open Pre-Game Options and choose Mod Manager.
- Enable the item deliberately. Select the mod in the Mod Manager and enable it. Leave unrelated subscribed items disabled while you establish that the new mod works.
- Start a test session. Launch the game and check the main menu, a short new campaign, or a disposable save before committing to a long campaign.
Subscribing is not an instruction to activate everything in your Workshop list. The Mod Manager is the control point for the active set, so a large downloaded collection can coexist with a small, stable loadout.
Manage the active mod list
Start with a small, known set
Enable one mod first, or a small group that the author explicitly describes as compatible. If the game launches and behaves normally, add the next item. This approach gives you a clear cause when a crash, missing text, visual error, or failed campaign load appears. Keep a note of the active names and the date or game build whenever you begin a campaign.

Check dependencies and version notes
A Workshop description may require another mod, specify a minimum or maximum game version, or warn that an update is incompatible with existing saves. Satisfy those requirements before diagnosing the game itself. If the author provides a load-order instruction, follow that instruction in the Mod Manager; otherwise, avoid changing several entries at once just to experiment.
Keep a known-good configuration
Record the set that successfully launches and reaches a test campaign. A simple text file can include the mod names, Workshop links or IDs as shown in Steam, the game version, and whether each item affects campaign data. This record lets you return to a working configuration after an update or a failed experiment.
Use disable for reversible testing
Turning an entry off in the Mod Manager leaves the Workshop download available. It is the correct first step when you want to compare a modded and unmodded launch or isolate a conflict. Do not treat disabling as a guarantee that an existing save is independent of that mod; save compatibility is a separate issue.

Modded saves should be treated as dependent on the mod list that created them. Feral’s FAQ gives an explicit rule: “If you save a game while using one or more mods, you must always have those mods enabled while playing that saved game.” It also states: “If you disable any of those mods, you will be unable to load the saved game.”

That rule changes how you should plan campaigns:
- Maintain a vanilla campaign separately. Use an unmodded save when you need maximum portability across machines, updates, or troubleshooting sessions.
- Capture the active list before a long campaign. Record every enabled item, not only the major overhaul. A small campaign script can be just as important to a save as a visible graphics mod.
- Avoid removing campaign-affecting mods mid-save. If you no longer want an item, finish or abandon that campaign before disabling or uninstalling it.
- Test updates on a copy or disposable campaign. A Workshop update can arrive automatically, so verify that your configuration still loads before opening your primary save.
If a save stops loading immediately after a mod is disabled, restore the exact previous enabled set before attempting file repairs. File verification cannot recreate a missing mod dependency.
Disable, delete, or unsubscribe: choose the least destructive action

Use the first row for diagnosis. Jumping directly to deletion can destroy the evidence needed to identify a conflict, and unsubscribing can make it harder to restore the exact version required by a save.
Cleanly remove Workshop mods and verify the game
When a launch failure, corrupted menu, or unexplained crash persists, SEGA Support recommends a staged cleanup. Work through the steps in order and launch the game after each major change.
- Open the launcher Mod Manager. Deactivate the suspect entries. If the launcher offers a trash-can control for an item, use it when you intend to delete that mod rather than merely test it.
- Unsubscribe in Steam. Return to the item’s Workshop page and choose Unsubscribe. If several items are involved, record their names first so you know what was removed.
- Inspect the game’s data directory. Look for leftover mod files in the installation’s
datadirectory. Remove only files you can positively identify as belonging to the mod and only after closing Steam and the game. If an author documents a different location, follow that documentation instead of guessing. - Inspect Workshop content storage. Check Steam’s
steamapps/workshop/contentdirectory for residual content associated with the title. Do not delete unrelated game’s folders; identify the title’s content and the mod’s files before removing anything. - Verify official files in Steam. In the Steam Library, right-click the game, select Properties, open Local Files, and choose Verify Integrity of Game Files…. Steam compares the installation with its official manifest and reacquires files that are missing or damaged.
- Launch without mods. Confirm that the vanilla game reaches the main menu. Only then reintroduce a required mod, one item at a time, using the known-good notes you recorded.
SEGA’s troubleshooting guidance says that if the problem disappears after you unsubscribe from or delete mods, it is almost certainly mod-related. Verification repairs the base installation; it does not make an incompatible mod compatible and does not replace a mod that you intentionally removed.

What to do after a game update
An update can change the files or interfaces a mod expects. A campaign that worked yesterday may fail because the mod itself has not been updated, because a dependency changed, or because the save requires an older combination.
Use a controlled diagnosis
- Write down the game build and the active mod list before changing anything.
- Disable all mods in the Mod Manager and test a new vanilla session. Do not use your only mod-dependent save as the first test.
- If vanilla works, re-enable the prior set in small groups, starting with the items whose descriptions confirm support for the current build.
- Read each Workshop description for an update notice, dependency change, or explicit warning about existing campaigns.
- If the old campaign still fails, restore the exact mod list and versions it used rather than substituting similarly named items.
Consider an older supported beta only when necessary
SEGA’s support workflow points to Steam’s Properties window and its Betas tab when a mod works only with an older game build. In Steam, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Betas, and select an available version. Rollback branches are title- and publisher-dependent, so the required build may not be offered. If no matching branch appears, do not assume that a random older executable or download is safe.

Change builds only after recording the current state. Switching back and forth while several mods are enabled can create multiple variables at once and make the original failure harder to isolate.

A manually supplied mod may arrive as an archive with instructions rather than a Workshop subscription. The author should identify the destination, required game version, dependencies, and removal procedure. Follow those instructions exactly; do not infer a destination from the archive’s name.

Before copying anything, close the game and Steam, back up the unmodified files that the instructions say will be replaced, and record every file added. A manual mod can leave files behind after you think it has been removed, and Steam’s verification may restore official files without knowing which extra files are safe to delete. If a Workshop release exists, prefer it unless the manual package provides a documented reason to use a fixed version.
Never copy a second version over an existing Workshop installation without first removing the old version. Two packages with the same scripts or data can produce a conflict that the Mod Manager cannot explain.

A practical routine for long campaigns
- Separate saves by configuration. Keep a vanilla campaign and label modded campaigns with the main overhaul or ruleset they use.
- Freeze the list before committing. Once a campaign is underway, avoid changing campaign-affecting entries or accepting an unreviewed update immediately before playing.
- Maintain a recovery note. Store the enabled list, game build, Workshop item names, and any required beta branch beside your campaign notes.
- Test after updates. Launch a disposable session first. If it fails, use the disable-and-isolate process rather than repeatedly opening the primary save.
- Clean up deliberately. Disable for a reversible test; delete and unsubscribe when you are finished; inspect documented locations and verify files only when a complete cleanup is needed.
This routine preserves the useful distinction between downloaded and active content, gives saves a stable dependency record, and leaves Steam’s repair tools as a clear final recovery step.
