To use a microSD card for Steam Deck games, insert it, format it in Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card, then use Steam > Settings > Storage to choose the card for new installations or manage existing libraries. Formatting initializes the card and can erase everything on it, so copy off any files you need first.

What you need before installing games

The Steam Deck can install and run games from a compatible microSD card, but SteamOS must prepare the card before Steam can use it as a game-library destination. Have the following ready:

  • A microSD card rated UHS-I, class 3 or better. This is Valve’s supported baseline.
  • The Steam Deck connected to power or with enough battery to finish formatting and a large game installation.
  • A backup of any files already on the card. Deck formatting initializes the card rather than preserving its existing contents.
  • A reliable Wi-Fi connection if you are downloading games rather than moving files that are already installed.

Valve’s Steam Deck OLED specifications identify the slot as supporting UHS-I microSD media in SD, SDHC and SDXC formats. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work in the slot, but the Deck does not support the higher transfer modes those cards can provide. In practice, paying extra solely for a UHS-II or UHS-III speed rating does not unlock those speeds on the Deck.

The compatibility guidance does not establish a best brand, model, capacity or price. For a purchase, concentrate on a reputable card with verifiable authenticity, a warranty and a capacity that fits your library; compare price per usable gigabyte rather than assuming a higher speed label will improve Deck performance.

How to format a microSD card for Steam Deck

Steam requires the card to be formatted for the Deck before it can be selected as a normal Steam storage location. Valve’s documented route is:

  1. Turn on the Steam Deck and insert the microSD card fully into the slot. If the card contains files you want to keep, stop and copy them elsewhere before continuing.
  2. Open the Steam menu.
  3. Choose Settings, then System.
  4. Select Format SD Card.
  5. Confirm the operation when SteamOS asks. Formatting can take a few minutes; leave the card inserted and do not power off the Deck while it runs.
  6. When the process finishes, open Steam > Settings > Storage and verify that the microSD card appears as a storage location.

Menu wording or the exact confirmation screen can vary between SteamOS releases, but the documented path is the starting point. If the format option is unavailable or the card does not appear, use the detection troubleshooting section below rather than repeatedly formatting a card that the Deck cannot see.

What formatting does to the card

Formatting prepares a filesystem and storage metadata that SteamOS can use for a Steam library. It is not a safe “add Steam support” operation for an existing collection of photos, documents or other files: assume the operation removes the card’s previous contents. Keep a separate copy until you have confirmed that the new card works.

Valve’s Portuguese-language Steam Deck FAQ states that cards inserted in the Deck use ext4 with casefolding and that Steam Deck handles formatting appropriately. That is a translated attribution to Valve’s localized FAQ, not an English-language quotation. The practical implication is that the Deck, rather than a desktop formatting utility, should perform the initial setup.

How to install a new game on the microSD card

After formatting, Steam’s storage manager shows the internal drive and connected microSD card. Use it to make the card the destination for a new download:

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage and confirm the microSD card is listed.
  2. Start installing a game from your Library.
  3. When Steam asks for a storage location, select the microSD card rather than the internal drive. SteamOS releases can present the destination selector differently, so use the location that is identified as the formatted SD card.
  4. Review the required download and disk space shown by Steam, then start the installation.
  5. Keep the Deck awake and the card inserted until the download and installation complete. Removing the card while a game is being written can leave an incomplete library.

Once installed, the game appears in your Library like a game stored internally. Steam still needs the card inserted to launch it. If you remove the card, Steam may show the game as unavailable or uninstalled until the same card is reinserted and mounted.

How to move an installed game between internal storage and the card

Use the storage manager rather than manually dragging a game folder. Manual moves can leave Steam’s library records pointing to the old location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Review the listed drives and select the drive that currently contains the game.
  3. Choose the game you want to relocate and use the move or storage-management control offered by your SteamOS version.
  4. Select the other listed drive—the internal storage or the formatted microSD card—as the destination.
  5. Start the move and wait for Steam to finish copying and updating its library data before launching the game.

The available controls and button labels can change with Steam client updates, so this guide does not assume a particular prompt name. The important safeguards are to start from Settings > Storage, select a destination that Steam recognizes, and let Steam perform the move.

Choosing where future games go

When several storage locations are available, Steam may let you choose a destination during each installation. Check the selected location before confirming a large download; otherwise the Deck can fill internal storage even though the card has free space. The Storage screen is also the place to review free space and manage connected storage.

Keep room on the internal drive for SteamOS updates, shader data, compatibility files and games that benefit from the fastest available local storage. There is no Valve-published rule in the cited guidance that assigns a specific percentage of free space, so treat free-space headroom as a practical planning choice rather than a fixed requirement.

How to see and manage game storage

Steam > Settings > Storage is the central view for the Deck’s internal drive and formatted microSD card. Use it to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that SteamOS detects the card and has mounted it as a storage location.
  • See which drive contains an installed game.
  • Choose a destination when installing another game.
  • Move games between listed storage locations using Steam’s own management controls.
  • Identify which drive is running low before beginning a download.

A card can be physically inserted yet still be unusable if it has not been formatted by the Deck, is not mounted correctly, is counterfeit or is failing. The Storage screen distinguishes a recognized storage location from a card that is merely present in the slot.

Which microSD card specification should you buy?

Specification or choice What Valve’s guidance establishes What it means on a Steam Deck
UHS-I Supported interface standard The appropriate baseline for a purchase.
Class 3 or better Valve’s supported performance rating Use a card meeting or exceeding this rating.
UHS-II or UHS-III Expected to work, but higher transfer speeds are not supported by the Deck Do not pay a premium expecting the Deck to use the faster bus mode.
SD, SDHC or SDXC media Listed in Valve’s Steam Deck OLED slot specification These format families are supported by that hardware specification.
Brand, model, capacity and price No comparative evidence establishes a winner Choose based on authenticity, warranty, capacity and price per usable gigabyte.

Class and bus ratings are not a guarantee that every card is genuine or healthy. Buy through a seller with a clear return policy, retain the receipt and test the card before trusting it with a large game library. The cited Valve material does not provide comparative load-time tests, capacity recommendations or a named “best” card.

What to do if the microSD card is not detected

Work through the checks in order, stopping when the card appears in Steam > Settings > Storage:

  1. Power down or use the Deck’s normal software controls before reseating. Remove and reinsert the card carefully so it is fully seated. Do not force it or scrape the contacts.
  2. Check whether SteamOS sees the card. Open Steam > Settings > Storage. A card that is absent there has not become a usable Steam destination.
  3. Confirm whether it needs formatting. If the Deck recognizes the card but it is not available as a Steam location, use Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card after backing up anything important.
  4. Allow the format to finish. Interrupting a process that can take several minutes can leave the card unprepared.
  5. Test the simplest explanation. If the card still does not appear, try a known-good, compatible UHS-I class 3-or-better card. This helps separate a card problem from a Deck or software problem.
  6. Inspect for physical damage. A cracked card, damaged contacts or a loose slot can prevent detection; do not continue writing to media that is visibly damaged.

Valve’s compatibility baseline is UHS-I, class 3 or better. A UHS-II or UHS-III label does not make an otherwise problematic card more compatible, and it will not make the Deck use those higher transfer modes.

Why Steam says a card game is uninstalled

“Uninstalled” can mean Steam cannot currently match the library entry to files at the location it expects; it does not always prove that every game file has been erased. First distinguish the situation:

  • The card is missing from Storage: solve detection, mounting or formatting first. Steam cannot use a library it cannot see.
  • The card appears in Storage, but one game says uninstalled: the files may be present but the library record may no longer point to them, or the installation may be incomplete.
  • The card was reformatted: the previous files should be treated as erased unless you have a separate backup.

Attempting recognition of existing files

Steam Support’s general article for games appearing as uninstalled advises beginning the installation while the existing files remain in their proper location so the Steam client can recognize them. Its described Storage Manager route is general Steam guidance, not a Steam Deck-specific guarantee, and the exact controls can differ by client version.

  1. Make sure the microSD card is visible in Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Verify that the game’s files are still in the library folder on that card and have not been renamed or partially removed.
  3. Start installing the same game and select the existing microSD library location when Steam offers a destination.
  4. Watch the process rather than assuming it will always rediscover every file. Steam may validate existing data, download missing files or restart the installation if the folder is not the expected library location.
  5. If recognition fails, avoid formatting the card again until you have copied any recoverable files elsewhere.

This procedure is a recovery attempt, not a promise that Steam Deck will restore every installation. Missing, corrupted or incorrectly located files still need to be downloaded again.

Common mistakes and safer fixes

Formatting a card without a backup

Symptom: photos or other files disappear after setup. Fix: treat Deck formatting as destructive and maintain a separate copy before using Format SD Card. Recovery is not guaranteed after a format.

Buying for UHS-II or UHS-III speed alone

Symptom: a more expensive card does not produce the expected transfer improvement. Fix: select a reputable UHS-I card rated class 3 or better. The Deck does not support the higher UHS-II or UHS-III transfer speeds.

Removing the card during a download or move

Symptom: a game is incomplete or later appears unavailable. Fix: let Steam finish writing and updating its library data before removing the card or shutting down.

Moving folders manually

Symptom: files occupy space but Steam lists the game as uninstalled. Fix: use Steam > Settings > Storage for moves, or use the general Steam recognition procedure while files remain in the expected library location.

Assuming all “uninstalled” messages mean data loss

Symptom: you immediately redownload a large game even though its files remain on the card. Fix: check the card’s presence in Storage and attempt Steam’s existing-file recognition process first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a questionable card

Symptom: games fail validation, installations stop or the card repeatedly disappears. Fix: stop relying on it for the library, preserve any readable files, and test a genuine compatible card purchased with a return option.

How the Deck’s card filesystem affects compatibility

Valve’s localized FAQ describes Steam Deck cards as using ext4 with casefolding and says the Deck handles formatting appropriately. That detail explains why a card prepared by a general-purpose computer may not behave like a card initialized through SteamOS. For normal game storage, let the Deck perform the format and allow Steam to create or manage the library location.

The ext4 statement is attributed to Valve’s Portuguese-Brazil FAQ and should not be read as a promise that every SteamOS release exposes identical repair or filesystem controls. It is a description of the format Valve says it uses for cards inserted in the Deck.

A practical storage plan for a growing library

  1. Set up the card once: back up its contents, insert it and format it through the documented System settings path.
  2. Verify before downloading: check Settings > Storage and confirm the card is listed with available space.
  3. Assign deliberately: select the card during installations when you want games stored there; do not assume Steam will always choose it automatically.
  4. Keep critical system headroom: reserve internal space for SteamOS and other system-managed data instead of filling the internal drive with every game.
  5. Move rather than duplicate: use Storage management to relocate games and avoid creating two full copies unnecessarily.
  6. Back up saves separately when possible: a microSD card is removable media and can fail or be misplaced. Game-save behavior depends on the title and Steam’s synchronization settings, so do not treat the installed game files as your only copy of important progress.

There is no single capacity that fits every owner. A smaller card may be enough for a rotating library, while a larger card reduces the need to redownload games; choose according to the size of the games you actually play and the price per usable gigabyte. Valve’s cited specifications do not establish a capacity ceiling or recommend a particular model.

What the official guidance does—and does not—promise

  • Valve documents the format path, Storage settings and a UHS-I class 3-or-better compatibility baseline.
  • Valve’s OLED specification documents a UHS-I slot supporting SD, SDHC and SDXC formats for that model family.
  • Valve’s localized FAQ attributes ext4 with casefolding to cards used in the Deck and says Steam Deck handles formatting.
  • Steam Support’s existing-file recovery advice is written for the general Steam client, so it may not resolve every Deck library problem.
  • No cited official source supplies a universal load-time benchmark, a fastest-card ranking, a best brand, a recommended capacity or a guaranteed recovery method for every “uninstalled” message.

The dependable workflow is therefore simple: use a genuine supported card, let SteamOS format it, manage locations through Storage, and preserve files before attempting destructive repairs.
