To install a game in GOG GALAXY, install the client from GOG, sign in to the account that owns the game, select it in your library, and click Install. When installation finishes, select the game and click Play. You can change the game and update download folders in Settings, or use GOG’s offline backup installers instead of installing through the client.
The route you choose depends on whether you want to handle the game from inside GALAXY or download standalone setup files in a browser. If something goes wrong, first identify whether the issue is with downloading, installing, updating, or launching; GOG’s error categories distinguish several different causes.
Install GOG GALAXY
Start with the client if you want to install and open a game from your GOG library. Download the installer from GOG’s official GALAXY installation page, then run it and follow the setup instructions shown on your computer.
- Download the GALAXY installer from GOG’s official installation page.
- Run the installer you downloaded.
- Follow the on-screen setup instructions to finish installing the client.
The exact setup screens can vary, so follow the prompts shown by the installer rather than relying on a particular screen sequence. GOG’s instructions describe this as the standard way to install the client. GALAXY is the application used for the in-client game flow; it is not itself the game you are trying to install.

After setup, open GALAXY and sign in with the GOG account that owns the game. This account detail matters: the library you see is associated with the account you use, so if the title is not listed, confirm that you are signed in to the account where you own it before treating the issue as an installation failure.
Install a game you own through GALAXY
Once you are signed in to the right account, use the library or Owned games view to find the title. GOG’s basic installation flow is to select a game in the library and click Install; the client then presents the prompts for that game.
- Open GOG GALAXY and sign in to the GOG account that owns the game.
- Open your library or Owned games view, then select the game you want to install.
- Click Install and follow the game’s installation prompts.
- When installation completes, select the game and click Play.
During the installation, read the options shown for the selected title. There is no need to follow a different process for every game based on assumptions: use the choices that appear in the client for the game you selected. If you have changed the default game folder, the client’s installation location may differ from the one used for other titles.
The library’s layout and individual game options may differ by title or change over time. GOG’s installation instructions cover selecting a library game and choosing Install; its guidance for corrupted local files describes the installed game appearing in the left sidebar with Play available. If you do not see the same controls, use the options shown for that game in your client.
When installation is complete, select the installed title and choose Play. If you cannot find the game or do not see Play, first check whether the installation has finished and whether you have selected the intended title. If the control is present but the game will not open, treat that as a launch problem rather than repeating the entire installation flow automatically. GOG lists launch issues separately, and the appropriate next step can depend on the game and system.
Choose where games and downloads are stored
GALAXY has separate folder settings for installed games, temporary game updates, and other downloads such as backup installers and bonus content. To change them, open the cogwheel menu, choose Settings, and select the Installing, updating tab. GOG’s folder-location instructions describe the settings available there.
- Games installation folder: the destination for games installed through GALAXY.
- Temporary game update folder: the location used for temporary game-update files.
- Other downloads folder: the location for downloads such as offline backup installers and bonus content.
These settings serve different purposes. The game installation folder is where the installed game goes; the temporary update folder is for temporary update files; the other-downloads folder covers items such as backup installers and bonus content. Changing one should not be assumed to change the other two. If you are trying to manage where an installed game lives, check the games installation folder setting rather than assuming the backup-installer folder controls it.
It is useful to check these locations before beginning a download or installation if you want files stored in a particular place. The settings page is the place to verify the selected folders; do not rely only on the location used for a previous title or download. If you change a destination because an operation failed, note the exact error first so you can tell whether the issue concerns disk access or available space.

If an installation fails with a disk-access or free-space error, check the error code and the selected destination before trying again. The code categories are distinct; changing a folder is not a universal fix for every installation problem.
Galaxy installation vs. offline backup installers
GOG provides two distinct ways to download a game: install it through GALAXY, or download standalone backup installer files from your account in a browser. The browser route does not require using GALAXY for the game’s installation. GOG describes the methods separately in its download troubleshooting guidance.

The main supported difference is where you start and how you obtain the installation files. GALAXY offers an in-client route; a browser download gives you standalone installer files to run yourself. GOG lists them as separate download methods and advises trying the other method if one does not work. Switching routes can be a practical alternative, but it does not prove that the first route’s underlying problem has been fixed.

- In a browser, open your GOG account and library, then choose the game.
- Download the game’s offline backup installer files.
- Open the download folder and run the setup application for the game.
- After setup finishes, open the game’s installation directory and run its executable.
The offline installer is an alternative download and installation route, not a required step for GALAXY users. The available files and the game’s executable can vary by title; follow the instructions associated with the files you downloaded. In this route, the downloaded setup application performs the installation, and launching afterward means opening the game executable from the installed game directory. It is different from selecting the game and clicking Play in GALAXY.
Choose the route that matches the task you are trying to complete. If you want the client’s library-based Install and Play flow, use GALAXY. If you want standalone files downloaded from your account in a browser, use the backup installer path. GOG’s documented comparison supports these distinctions; it does not mean every game behaves identically or that either method guarantees a particular result on every system.
Troubleshoot a download, installation, or launch problem
Start with the exact error message or code and the stage where the problem occurs. GOG’s GALAXY error-code index separates several failure types, while its general troubleshooting section and launching-issues article provide issue-specific guidance. A fix for one code or game should not be assumed to apply to another.
Keep the problem category clear as you troubleshoot. A download that will not complete is not the same as an installation error after files arrive; an update-folder setting is not necessarily relevant to a launch failure; and an error identifying insufficient space should not be treated as a server connection error. Record the wording or code shown, note whether you were downloading, installing, updating, or opening the game, and follow the matching GOG support instructions.

The download will not complete
GOG treats GALAXY and browser downloads as separate methods. If one method fails, try the other: browser downloads provide standalone installers, while GALAXY offers the in-client route. GOG’s download help page covers this choice. Switching methods changes how you obtain the files; it does not establish that the cause of the original failure has been fixed.

Keep the distinction in mind when trying the alternative: a successful browser download gives you installer files to run, while a GALAXY download keeps the operation in the client. If you switch from one to the other, continue using the installation steps for that route instead of mixing the two flows. If the same problem persists, use GOG’s download guidance for the specific method and error you encountered.
The error says files are corrupted (E1)
GOG identifies E1 as a corrupted local game copy. Use the corrupt-files troubleshooting article for that error rather than treating every installation failure as file corruption. Follow its instructions for the affected game and installation.
E1 is a useful example of why the displayed code matters: it identifies a local-copy problem, not a general label for any failure to install. Do not apply corruption-specific advice solely because an installation did not finish if GALAXY displayed a different code or message.
The error says GALAXY cannot connect to GOG.com servers (E3)
E3 is the server-connectivity category in GOG’s error-code index. It is distinct from a corrupted local copy, disk access, or insufficient space. Use the error-specific support guidance and avoid changing game files as though E3 identified a local-file problem.
The error concerns disk access (E4) or free space (E8)
GOG distinguishes disk access errors (E4) from insufficient free disk space (E8). Check which code appears and which installation destination is selected. The folder settings are under Settings > Installing, updating; use the matching code guidance in GOG’s error index rather than assuming both codes have the same cause.
These categories point to different things to investigate, so start with the exact code rather than making several unrelated changes at once. For either issue, confirming the selected destination is a sensible first check because GALAXY has a setting for the games installation folder. But the error index’s distinction matters: E4 is identified as disk access, while E8 is insufficient free space. Use the corresponding support instructions rather than treating a folder change as a guaranteed remedy.
The game will not launch or crashes
Launch failures depend on the game and system. GOG’s troubleshooting index includes Verify / Repair for some crashes and links to separate launch-issue instructions. Check the launching-issues guidance for the relevant case. There is no single verified fix that applies to every game.

A short diagnosis can help you choose the next action without confusing one failure type for another. Check the account, the stage of the process, the code, and the route you are using. Then follow the support guidance that matches those details.
- Confirm that GALAXY is signed in to the account that owns the game.
- Identify whether the problem is with downloading, installing, updating, or launching; those stages do not imply the same cause.
- Record the displayed error code, if there is one, and use its corresponding category in GOG’s error index.
- For a disk-related error, check the selected installation destination and use the correct disk-access or space guidance.
- If the client download route fails, consider the browser-based offline installer route, or try GALAXY if the browser download fails.
- For a launch or crash problem, follow the game- and system-specific steps instead of applying a general installation fix.
