You cannot install or format expandable storage in Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses. Meta’s current product listings describe fixed 32GB internal flash storage, and neither Meta nor Ray-Ban documents a microSD slot, USB storage mount, replaceable flash module, or user-accessible formatting tool. The supported way to manage capacity is to import captures with the Meta AI app, verify the copies on your phone or another archive, and then use a factory reset only when you deliberately need to erase the glasses.
This guide explains the storage limits for the Gen 1 and Gen 2 models, the complete import-and-cleanup workflow, why common expansion ideas are unsupported, and how to avoid permanently deleting captures.
The short answer: there is no expandable-storage installation
Meta/Ray-Ban AI glasses keep photos and videos in private internal storage until you choose to import them. Official specifications identify that storage as fixed flash memory. They do not describe a card bay, removable cartridge, external-drive mode, or an exposed partition that you can reformat.
That means the usual procedures for a camera or Android phone do not apply. You cannot insert a microSD card, connect a USB-C thumb drive as extra recording space, or open a settings screen to format a storage volume. A replacement flash chip would also be an undocumented hardware modification, not a supported upgrade.

When the glasses approach their limit, the supported capacity workflow is:
- Pair the glasses with the Meta AI app.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled and the glasses close to the phone.
- Use the app’s download or import control to transfer captures.
- Confirm important files in the phone’s camera roll or gallery, or in a separate archive.
- Only then consider a factory reset, and only for a genuine cleanup, ownership transfer, or serious software problem.
Imported files can be stored on the phone, but that phone storage is an archive destination; it does not increase the glasses’ own 32GB capacity.
How much internal storage the current models have
Meta’s 2026 product listings quote the same nominal capacity for the two models covered here, but they give different approximate capture counts. Those counts are manufacturer estimates rather than guaranteed limits: file size varies with scene detail, recording settings and software behavior.

The different photo estimates do not establish a different physical capacity. They are model-specific figures published in different official page sections. Treat the 32GB figure as the storage ceiling and the capture counts as planning guidance, not as a promise that every owner will reach exactly those totals.

What “formatting” means on these glasses
On a device with a removable card, formatting creates a file system on that card. The glasses do not provide that user workflow. The internal flash is managed by the glasses’ firmware, and the documented user action that deletes captures is a factory reset.
Ray-Ban’s FAQ says a factory reset removes personal data and deletes captures. It also says the reset permanently erases all captures and all associations between the glasses and your Meta Account. In practical terms, reset is an erase-and-restore operation, not a routine “format storage” button. It should be treated as irreversible for the files on the glasses.
How to import captures before space runs out
Use this sequence whenever the glasses are filling up or before you hand them to another person. The labels can change slightly between app versions, but the function is the Meta AI app’s download/import control.
- Open the Meta AI app. Confirm that the glasses appear as paired in the app rather than starting a reset or unpair process.
- Enable Bluetooth. Keep the phone and glasses nearby so the app can maintain the connection during the transfer.
- Start the download or import. Select the app control for downloading or importing captures and let the transfer run. Ray-Ban says importing captures uses a temporary Wi-Fi connection directly between the app and the glasses; Bluetooth remains part of the normal pairing setup.
- Leave the devices undisturbed. Avoid walking out of range, disabling wireless connections or closing the app while files are moving. If the transfer stops, reopen the app and retry rather than deleting anything on the glasses.
- Verify the destination. Open the phone’s camera roll or gallery and check that the photos and videos you need play correctly. For irreplaceable material, copy the files to a separately supported archive as well.
- Choose the next action. Once the copies are verified, keep recording if the glasses still have room. If you need to clear all local data, proceed to the factory-reset section; there is no documented selective formatting tool in the glasses.
The phone’s gallery is the first verification point because Meta describes imported media as being saved there. A second copy on another archive protects you if the phone is lost, damaged or later cleared.

What to do when the glasses report low or full storage
Import first, delete second
Do not respond to a low-space warning by buying a memory card or plugging in a drive. Neither accessory is documented as a recording destination. Start an import and confirm the files on the phone before taking any destructive action.
When an import appears incomplete
Check the gallery for the files that did arrive, keep the glasses close to the phone, and retry the app’s import control with Bluetooth enabled. A temporary direct Wi-Fi link may be created for the transfer, so a brief change in wireless activity is expected. Do not reset the glasses merely because one transfer attempt failed; reset would erase the remaining local captures.
When the phone has no room
The glasses cannot be expanded by using a phone that is already full. Free space on the phone or select a separately supported archive destination, then run the import again. The archive holds copies after transfer; it does not become an extension of the glasses’ internal memory.
When you need only selected files
Use the app and phone gallery to identify the captures you want to retain. Because the documented reset action removes all captures, do not use reset as a way to remove one unwanted clip while keeping others on the glasses. Preserve the files you need before any full erase.

How to factory-reset safely
A reset is appropriate for a planned ownership hand-off, a serious software issue for which normal recovery has failed, or a deliberate full cleanup after archiving. It is not required for ordinary importing and it is not a capacity upgrade.
- Complete an import with the Meta AI app.
- Open the phone’s camera roll or gallery and test representative photos and videos.
- Make an additional archive copy when the captures matter.
- Confirm that you are ready to remove personal data, captures and the glasses’ associations with your Meta Account.
- Start the factory-reset command using the current reset control provided by the Meta AI app or the glasses’ documented setup flow.
- After the reset completes, set up the glasses again only if you are keeping them; otherwise, leave them ready for the next owner.
Because Ray-Ban describes the erasure as permanent, there is no recovery step in this workflow. A reset performed before verification can turn a connection problem into permanent data loss.

MicroSD cards
Official listings do not identify a microSD slot or a supported card format. There is therefore no documented insertion point, file-system choice or in-glasses command for formatting a card. A card may be useful for archiving files on another device, but it is not an expandable-storage installation for the glasses.

USB-C flash drives and external SSDs
The available specifications do not describe USB storage mounting or recording directly to an external drive. Connecting a drive, even if a physical adapter fits, is not an established way to increase capture capacity. Use a supported phone or archive workflow after importing instead.

Replacing the internal flash
The fixed flash is not presented as a field-replaceable module. Opening the frames or replacing a chip would risk damage and would not provide a Meta-documented format or setup procedure. It could also affect the device’s software associations. Treat the listed 32GB as non-upgradable user storage.
Using a computer as live storage
The documented transfer path is the Meta AI app on a paired phone. The available information does not establish a computer-mounted storage mode or direct recording to a desktop. A computer can be used later as an archive after the phone receives the imports, but that is a separate copy-management step.
Planning capacity between Gen 1 and Gen 2
If you are deciding how often to import, use the advertised estimates as a reminder to schedule transfers rather than as a guaranteed number of shots. The Gen 2 Blayzer Optics listing cites more than 1,000 photos, while the Gen 1 Wayfarer listing cites more than 500; both cite more than 100 30-second videos. Since the two listings describe the same 32GB nominal flash capacity, the counts should not be interpreted as a user-selectable storage tier.

- Mostly photos: import when a day’s captures are safely copied instead of waiting for the device to become completely full.
- Mostly 30-second videos: plan more frequent transfers because video consumes space faster than a single still image.
- Long trips or events: bring a phone with enough free space for imports and a separate archive plan. The glasses themselves cannot accept a spare card midway through the event.
- Mixed use: monitor the app’s available-space indication if shown, but use verified copies—not an approximate counter—as the basis for deleting or resetting.
Phone and archive responsibilities
The glasses are the capture device, the Meta AI app manages transfer, and the phone’s camera roll or gallery is the first user-controlled destination. This separation matters when troubleshooting: a successful import can free the glasses only after you have verified the resulting files, while an archive device protects those files but cannot make the glasses record more media.
Keep a simple record of where important imports live. For example, after an event, confirm the files in the gallery, copy the folder to your chosen archive, and only then perform any full reset. Avoid assuming that an app thumbnail proves a complete local file; open several transferred videos and photos to verify playback.

Before giving the glasses to someone else, complete the data-protection sequence rather than merely removing the device from your phone:
