For a normal internet-connected ownCloud installation, open Market, choose an app, and click Install. ownCloud downloads, installs, and enables a compatible release. On a locked-down or offline server, transfer a compatible archive into an app directory and enable it with occ. When installation fails, the reliable path is to run occ as the web server’s HTTP user, verify the app and PHP compatibility, check ownership, and read the ownCloud, PHP, and web-server logs before changing settings.
This guide covers the web interface, repeatable command-line and offline procedures, Docker-specific checks, and a structured way to diagnose an app that will not install, enable, load, or survive an upgrade.
Choose the installation method that fits your server
ownCloud offers three practical installation paths. The Market app is the quickest when the server can reach the public ownCloud Marketplace. The occ command-line interface is more deterministic and easier to automate. A manually transferred archive is the option for a DMZ, disconnected host, or environment in which outbound Marketplace access is prohibited.

Before installing anything, record the ownCloud server release, PHP version, deployment type (package, virtual machine, or Docker), app ID, and whether you are using a core app directory or a custom directory. These details are needed to select a supported release and to interpret an error accurately.

Install an app from the ownCloud web interface
Open the Market and install
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Market from the top-level navigation.
- Search for the app by name and open its details page.
- Review the listed compatibility information and click Install.
Clicking Install makes ownCloud download the app from the Marketplace, place it in the configured app directory, and enable it. If the button is unavailable, the app may not support your ownCloud or PHP release, your account may lack administrator privileges, or the server may be unable to reach the Marketplace.
Check the resulting state
Open Settings → Admin → Apps. The Apps page separates enabled, disabled, and recommended apps. An app that appears under disabled has been placed on the server but was not activated; open its details or use the CLI procedure below to expose the exact error. Do not repeatedly click Install when an earlier attempt partially created the app directory—inspect the state first.

occ is ownCloud’s command-line administration tool. Run it from the ownCloud installation directory and, unless your distribution uses a different account, replace www-data below with the account used by the web server. ownCloud’s documentation requires running occ as the HTTP user so file ownership remains correct.
Inspect installed and disabled apps
sudo -u www-data ./occ app:list
sudo -u www-data ./occ app:list --disabledThe output shows app IDs and their enabled or disabled state. The directory name must match the app ID expected by ownCloud. A display name can differ from the ID, so copy the ID exactly when using subsequent commands.
Install, enable, upgrade, or remove a Marketplace app
sudo -u www-data ./occ market:install <app-id>
sudo -u www-data ./occ app:enable <app-id>
sudo -u www-data ./occ market:upgrade <app-id>
sudo -u www-data ./occ market:uninstall <app-id>market:install downloads and installs an app from the Marketplace. If installation completes but the app remains disabled, run app:enable separately so the activation error is visible. Use market:upgrade for a Marketplace-managed app and market:uninstall to remove it through ownCloud’s normal app mechanism.

Discover Marketplace IDs
sudo -u www-data ./occ market:listUse the ID returned by this command rather than guessing from a translated or marketing name. Save the command output when troubleshooting; it establishes exactly what ownCloud saw at the time of the failure.

An offline workflow has two phases: obtain and validate the archive on a connected system, then transfer and install it through a controlled channel. Download an archive that supports your ownCloud server and PHP environment. Do not substitute an arbitrary ZIP or source snapshot; use one of the archive formats documented by ownCloud.
Install a local archive with occ
sudo -u www-data ./occ market:install -l /mnt/data/<app-archive>.tar.gzThe -l option tells ownCloud to use the local archive instead of contacting the Marketplace. Keep the original filename and checksum in your change record so another administrator can identify exactly what was deployed.
Place an archive in an app directory
- Transfer the compatible archive to the server using your approved removable-media or file-transfer process.
- Extract the app into the configured default app directory or a custom directory listed in
apps_pathsinconfig/config.php. - Ensure the extracted directory name is the app ID, not a name with a release suffix such as
-mainor a second nested directory. - Set ownership and permissions so the HTTP user can read the code and write where ownCloud requires it.
- Enable the app from Settings → Admin → Apps or run
sudo -u www-data ./occ app:enable <app-id>.
Separate custom applications from core applications when practical. A dedicated path such as apps-external makes upgrades, backups, and incident recovery easier, but it does not remove the need for compatibility and permission checks.
Configure a custom app location
Define the custom path through the apps_paths setting in config/config.php. Keep the core app path and the external path distinct, and make sure the external path is present on every web and worker node. In a clustered or containerized deployment, a path that exists on one node but not another will produce inconsistent app lists and intermittent loading failures.

Why an app will not install or enable
Capture the exact error before attempting a fix. Record the app ID, ownCloud release, app release, PHP version, deployment type, and whether the error came from the browser or a command. The same message, such as “could not enable,” can represent a missing PHP extension, a permission problem, incompatible code, or a stale directory.
1. Confirm the app state and directory
sudo -u www-data ./occ app:list --disabledCheck whether the app is already installed but disabled. Compare the reported ID with the directory name under the configured app paths. Correct a mistaken directory name, remove an accidental extra nesting level, and then retry app:enable. Preserve a copy of the failed directory before deleting or replacing it.
2. Read all three primary log sources
ownCloud’s own log, the PHP log, and the web-server log often contain different parts of the same failure. The first diagnostic step recommended in ownCloud documentation is to check the logs from PHP, the embedded Apache server, and ownCloud itself.
- ownCloud log: Look for the app ID, exception class, stack trace, and request ID around the failed operation.
- PHP log: Check for parse errors, missing extensions, memory exhaustion, fatal errors, and warnings emitted while the app is loaded.
- Web-server log: Check HTTP status codes, permission denials, rewrite problems, timeouts, and upstream or FastCGI errors.
Increase ownCloud logging temporarily to All or Everything, reproduce the failure once, and then return to the normal level. If the failure occurs only in the browser, open the browser developer console and capture JavaScript errors; temporary debug mode may be necessary for a client-side failure. Remove personal data and secrets before sharing logs.
3. Fix ownership and execution identity
Running occ as root or as your login account can leave files owned by the wrong user. The HTTP user must be able to access the ownCloud installation and write the directories used by the deployment, including config/, data/, apps/, and, when configured, apps-external/. Use your operating system’s normal ownership and permission tools to correct those paths, then rerun the command as the HTTP user.

Do not make the entire installation world-writable as a shortcut. Broad permissions can expose configuration and user data and can hide the real ownership error. Match the existing permissions model used by the package or deployment documentation.
4. Check PHP and app compatibility
Manually installed apps must support the PHP environment used by your ownCloud release. The official app guidance specifically warns that incompatible code can make an instance unstable, including when the code targets a different PHP generation. Verify required PHP extensions, the app’s supported ownCloud releases, and any minimum PHP version before replacing files.

Third-party apps that call private ownCloud APIs can be rejected silently or fail during activation when internal APIs change. A code-checker failure is not fixed by changing file permissions; use a release that supports your server or obtain a maintained version from the app author.
5. Check Marketplace reachability and proxy policy
The Market app and a normal market:install need outbound access to the Marketplace. A DMZ or disconnected instance cannot complete that request. Use the local archive method instead, and transfer the file through your organization’s approved process. If a connected server uses a proxy or TLS inspection, confirm that PHP’s outbound connection can resolve and reach the Marketplace rather than assuming that the administrator’s browser connection is equivalent.
Docker-specific installation and repair checks
Container deployments change where commands run and where logs appear, but the app state and compatibility rules remain the same.

Run occ inside the ownCloud container
docker compose exec owncloud occ app:list
docker compose exec owncloud occ configreport:generate > config_report.txtUse the container’s own command form instead of a host path such as ./occ. If the image requires an explicit user, add the user option defined by that image or compose file so the command runs with the same identity as the web process.
Follow container logs
docker compose logs owncloud -fDocker commonly routes Apache and PHP output to container standard output and standard error. The command above follows those streams while you reproduce the failure. Combine that output with the ownCloud log configured inside the container; one source may show the PHP fatal error while another shows only the resulting HTTP 500.
Verify persistence and hostnames
- Confirm that the app directory is on the intended Docker volume or bind mount. Installing into a disposable container layer makes the app disappear when the container is recreated.
- Check that
OWNCLOUD_DOMAINandOWNCLOUD_TRUSTED_DOMAINSinclude the hostname or IP address users actually reach. - Ensure every replica mounts the same app and data paths when more than one container serves requests.
- After a compose update, rerun
occ app:listand verify that the app remains enabled.
Generate a useful escalation bundle
When local checks do not identify the cause, provide reproducible evidence rather than a screenshot of the Apps page. Enable configreport if it is not already available, then generate a report with the command appropriate to your deployment.

Redact passwords, tokens, private keys, session data, personal filenames, and user content before sending the bundle to a support team or forum.

A concise decision path
- If the server has Marketplace access, try the Market app and note the app ID and displayed compatibility.
- If the web install fails or you need repeatability, run
app:list, thenmarket:installandapp:enableas the HTTP user. - If the server is offline, transfer a documented compatible archive and use
market:install -lor the configured app path. - If activation fails, stop retrying and inspect ownCloud, PHP, and web-server logs.
- Correct the specific cause—ownership, path, PHP compatibility, app-code checks, network access, or Docker persistence—then enable the app once more.
- If the cause remains unclear, generate a config report and a redacted, reproducible escalation bundle.
