To run encoded PHP applications on a Linux VPS, install the ionCube Loader build that matches the server’s PHP minor version, CPU architecture, and thread-safety mode. Add it as a zend_extension in the configuration used by the application, restart that PHP SAPI, and verify both the command-line and web runtimes.
The safest installation route is ionCube’s Loader Wizard because it detects the web server’s actual PHP runtime and prints the required package and configuration line. Manual installation is reliable when you need repeatable provisioning or cannot expose a diagnostic script.

ionCube Loader is a PHP engine extension. It processes and executes encoded PHP files and performs related operations such as license validation. An application distributed as encoded PHP normally cannot start until a compatible Loader is active in the PHP process that serves it.
The Loader is not a normal application extension that can be selected by guessing a filename. Four characteristics must line up:

- PHP minor version: a Loader for PHP 8.3 is not interchangeable with one for PHP 8.2 or 8.4.
- Operating-system architecture: select the package built for the VPS CPU architecture, such as 64-bit x86, ARM64, ARMv7l, 32-bit Linux, or musl Linux.
- Thread-safety build: thread-safe and non-thread-safe Linux builds use different filenames.
- PHP SAPI: command-line PHP, PHP-FPM, and Apache’s PHP module can read different configuration files.
A successful php -m result in SSH therefore does not, by itself, prove that a website can load its encoded files.
Check the VPS before changing PHP
Perform the inspection as the same administrator who will install the extension. Record the results so you can identify a mismatch later and restore the previous configuration if necessary.

uname -mUse these results as follows:
php -vsupplies the major and minor version. For example, PHP 8.3 requires the 8.3 Loader file.php --inishows the loaded configuration file and the directory scanned for additional.inifiles.extension_diridentifies PHP’s normal extension directory. A custom protected directory is also acceptable when the configuration uses an absolute path.Thread Safetyreports whether the binary is thread-safe. A non-thread-safe build generally uses a filename such asioncube_loader_lin_8.4.so; a thread-safe build usesioncube_loader_lin_8.4_ts.so.uname -mreports the kernel architecture. Do not confuse this with the PHP filename suffix: architecture determines the archive, while the PHP version and thread-safety state determine the Loader filename inside it.
Inspect the PHP that serves the website
CLI PHP and web PHP may be different installations, versions, or SAPIs. Before choosing a package, confirm the runtime behind the affected virtual host.
- Create a temporary file in the site’s document root containing
<?php phpinfo();. - Open that file through the exact hostname and HTTPS virtual host used by the application.
- Record PHP Version, Server API, Loaded Configuration File, and Scan this dir for additional .ini files.
- Delete the file immediately after recording the values. A public
phpinfo()page discloses configuration details that should not remain online.
The Loader Wizard performs the same kind of machine-specific detection through the web SAPI and is preferable when the web configuration is unclear.
Use the Loader Wizard when possible
ionCube states that it recommends the Loader Wizard to assist with installation. It identifies the package and configuration line for the PHP runtime that actually executes the application, avoiding many CLI-versus-browser mistakes.

- Obtain the current Loader Wizard PHP script from ionCube’s official download resources.
- Upload it to the web space for the target virtual host using an administrator-controlled account.
- Open the script in a browser through that same virtual host. Do not test it through a different domain that might use another PHP-FPM pool.
- Follow the displayed instructions. The Wizard reports the PHP version, architecture and thread-safety requirements, the Loader archive to use, the file path, and the configuration directive.
- Apply the suggested change, restart the indicated PHP-FPM or Apache service, and run the Wizard again to confirm that the Loader is active.
- Remove the Wizard script when the check is complete. If it must remain during a maintenance window, restrict access by authentication or an administrator-only network rule.
The Wizard diagnoses the web SAPI, but it does not replace an application test. Start the encoded application after the restart and confirm that its normal login or health check succeeds.

Manual installation from the production Loader archive
1. Select the archive and file
Download the Linux package matching the architecture recorded from the VPS and the PHP minor version shown by the target SAPI. Use ionCube’s current Production Loaders table immediately before deployment; compatibility and package availability change as PHP releases.
After downloading the archive, extract it in a temporary directory:

tar -xzf ioncube_loaders_<architecture>.tar.gz
ls -la ioncubeChoose exactly one file for the target runtime. For PHP 8.4, the conventional non-thread-safe name is ioncube_loader_lin_8.4.so; the thread-safe counterpart is ioncube_loader_lin_8.4_ts.so. Replace 8.4 with the server’s actual minor version. Do not select a 32-bit archive for a 64-bit PHP process, even when the operating system can execute 32-bit binaries.
2. Put the shared object in a protected directory
You can use PHP’s existing extension_dir, or a separate root-owned directory referenced by an absolute path. A separate directory makes the Loader easy to identify and reduces the chance of overwriting a package-managed extension.

ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_<version>.so
/usr/local/lib/php/ioncube/Replace <version> with the PHP minor version, and use the _ts filename only when the target PHP is thread-safe. Confirm that the PHP worker account can read the file and that every parent directory is searchable:
ls -l /usr/local/lib/php/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_<version>*.so
namei -l /usr/local/lib/php/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_<version>.so3. Add a zend_extension directive
ionCube Loader must be loaded as a Zend extension, not as an ordinary extension= module. Create one small configuration file in the directory scanned by the target SAPI. The leading number makes the file easy to find and gives you control over ordering.
zend_extension=/usr/local/lib/php/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_<version>.soFor a Debian- or Ubuntu-style PHP layout, a typical file is:
/etc/php/<version>/mods-available/00-ioncube.iniFor an installation that scans a global directory such as /etc/php.d, create the equivalent file there. Do not assume either location: use php --ini for CLI and the web phpinfo() output for PHP-FPM or Apache. Use an absolute path in the directive so PHP does not depend on its current working directory.
4. Enable the file for the correct SAPI
Distribution configuration tools can create links from a module file into the active PHP configuration. On Debian and Ubuntu, for example, the module may be enabled with:

sudo phpenmod -v <version> -s fpm ioncubeUse the SAPI that serves the application; enable a separate CLI configuration only if command-line scripts also need encoded files. On systems that scan /etc/php.d directly, placing the file there is normally the enablement step. Verify the resulting path with the target SAPI’s Scan this dir for additional .ini files value.
5. Restart the process that loads PHP
A running PHP process does not reread extension directives for each request. Restart the service associated with the application, using the service name installed on the VPS:
sudo systemctl restart php<version>-fpm
sudo systemctl restart apache2Run only the restart that applies. On distributions using a generic PHP-FPM or Apache service, the names may be php-fpm and httpd. If a reverse proxy fronts PHP-FPM, restart the FPM pool rather than restarting an unrelated proxy. Check the service status and logs if the restart fails.

The table gives patterns, not a substitute for inspection. Multiple PHP versions can coexist, and a panel may maintain configuration files outside the operating system’s usual paths.
Verify the Loader in both runtimes
CLI verification
php -m | grep -i ionCube
php --ri "ionCube Loader"The first command should list ionCube, and the second should print the Loader’s information rather than a “not present” message. If the command reports a startup warning, resolve that warning before testing the application.

Web-SAPI verification
Run the Loader Wizard again, or use a temporary phpinfo() page. Confirm that the web output contains an ionCube Loader section, the expected PHP minor version, the expected configuration file, and the expected additional-INI directory. Delete the diagnostic page after checking.
Application verification
Open the application’s normal entry point and perform a low-risk health check. A Loader can appear in phpinfo() while encoded files still fail if the application requires a newer Loader or a different PHP version. Check the application log and PHP startup log for the precise compatibility message.
Troubleshooting common installation failures

Find duplicate directives
grep -Rni --include='*.ini' ioncube /etc/php /etc/php.d 2>/dev/nullThe directories differ by distribution, so include the paths shown by php --ini and by web phpinfo(). Two directives can produce startup warnings even when both point to the same shared object.
Separate a path error from a compatibility error
A missing-file or permission problem normally appears as “Unable to load dynamic library” during PHP startup. An encoded-file incompatibility generally occurs after PHP has loaded the extension and the application begins processing an encoded script. Treat those as different branches: first make the shared object loadable, then check the Loader release and encoding requirements.
Current Loader versions and why you should re-check
Loader support changes alongside PHP. The official production table records Loader 15.5.0 packages for Linux 32-bit, Linux 64-bit, musl Linux, ARMv7l, and ARM64, and lists PHP 8.5 loaders released on 2026-03-12. Separate ionCube release notes record Loader 15.5.1 on 2026-09-18, including fixes for PHP 8 Observer API environments, Opcache-related crashes, and clearer errors for incompatible environments.

The two version records may not represent the same point-in-time download listing. Check the current production table immediately before a production deployment and follow the package and compatibility information shown there, rather than relying on a cached archive or an old tutorial.
