Install Zenoss on a 64-bit x86_64 VPS running a supported RHEL-compatible distribution, provision the required filesystems, pass the official host validator, install the documented Docker release, and then deploy the matching Zenoss images and service definitions through Control Center. Use the single-host layout only for a test or development environment; a production deployment should be designed with the multi-host procedures.
This guide covers the platform decisions, storage layout, entitlement-controlled downloads, preflight checks, Docker preparation, image staging, topology deployment, and post-installation checks that apply to the current Control Center documentation and the Zenoss Core 6.2.1 artifact set.

Zenoss is not installed from a single generic package. Control Center deploys a set of authenticated container images, repository content, and service-definition packages. The exact files and sequence depend on the Zenoss release, so choose the release before creating the server.
Choose the documentation branch and obtain entitlement
The Community Edition archive is organized by release and includes separate planning, installation, configuration, administration, upgrade, and release-note documents for 6.2.x and earlier branches. Download access is controlled: Zenoss directs customers to delivery.zenoss.com and requires a support-portal account or a support request. Do not combine image archives, RPMs, or instructions from different releases.

For Zenoss Core 6.2.1, the installation guide names these artifacts:
install-zenoss-hbase-24.0.8.runinstall-zenoss-opentsdb-24.0.8.runinstall-zenoss-core_6.2-1_1.runzenoss-core-service-6.2.1-1.noarch.rpm
Resource Manager releases use different, release-specific image names. Treat the list above as a Core 6.2.1 example, not a universal download list.
Confirm VPS architecture and operating system
The host must be 64-bit x86_64. Current Control Center documentation lists these supported operating-system combinations:
| Distribution | Supported release |
|---|---|
| CentOS | 7.9 |
| AlmaLinux | 8.10 or 9.4 |
| Rocky Linux | 8.10 or 9.4 |
| Red Hat Enterprise Linux | 7.9, 8.10, or 9.4 |
Set the system locale to en_US.UTF-8. Synchronize clocks with NTP or chrony. In a multi-host deployment, every host must use the same distribution, release, and kernel; mixing, for example, Rocky Linux 9.4 with AlmaLinux 9.4 or different kernel builds violates the documented consistency requirement.
Plan storage before you create the server
The prerequisites page defines separate minimum filesystems for a master host. These are planning floors, not a capacity guarantee for a large inventory or long retention period.
| Mount or function | Documented minimum |
|---|---|
Root filesystem (/) |
30 GB |
| Swap | 16 GB |
Temporary files (/tmp) |
16 GB |
| Docker data | 50 GB |
Internal services (/opt/serviced/var/isvcs) |
50 GB |
| Application data | 200 GB |
| Application backups | 150 GB |
Use independent virtual disks or volumes where your VPS platform permits it, then mount them at the paths expected by the Zenoss documentation. The 200 GB application-data and 150 GB backup figures can be consumed quickly by device history, events, logs, and retained backups; increase them when your device count or retention policy demands it. Do not treat a single undifferentiated root disk as equivalent to the documented layout.

Choose a deployment topology
Control Center provides single-host and multi-host procedures. The official guidance states: “Single-host deployments are recommended for testing and development use only.” A single VPS can therefore be useful for learning, integration work, or a short-lived evaluation, but it does not provide the isolation expected of a production monitoring platform.
| Decision point | Single host | Multi-host |
|---|---|---|
| Documented purpose | Testing and development | Production-oriented design using separate host roles |
| Zenoss roles | Master and services share one VPS | Master, delegates, and collectors can be placed on separate hosts |
| Coordination | No multi-host ZooKeeper ensemble | ZooKeeper configuration is required where the multi-host procedure calls for it |
| Failure isolation | A host failure removes all components on that VPS | Components can be distributed across hosts according to the deployment plan |
| Operational effort | Fewer machines to configure | More networking, storage, and role coordination |
Before selecting multi-host, decide where collectors will run, how backups leave the monitoring network, which firewall zones each role belongs to, and how much storage each role needs. The official installation index has separate instructions for master installation, delegate installation, ZooKeeper, and the final single-host or multi-host deployment.
Step 1: Provision and baseline the VPS
- Deploy a supported image. Select x86_64 and one of the documented distribution releases. Do not start with an unsupported distribution and plan to convert it later; the validator checks the operating-system assumptions before installation.
- Create the documented filesystems. Allocate the root, swap,
/tmp, Docker-data, internal-services, application-data, and backup areas listed above. Mount them persistently and verify free space after mounting. - Set the locale. Configure the host and all future hosts to use
en_US.UTF-8. - Synchronize time. Enable NTP or chrony and verify that the clock is stepping or slewing correctly. Consistent time is important for certificates, logs, service coordination, and troubleshooting.
- Prepare name resolution and networking. Give every host a stable name and address. Check forward and reverse DNS where your environment uses it, and reserve the ports required by the exact release documentation.
- Plan the Docker network. Compare Docker’s bridge subnet with the VPS network and any routed monitoring networks. A conflicting subnet must be changed before services are deployed.
Step 2: Run the official host validator
Download the current zenoss-install-host-validate script from the release’s prerequisites documentation, copy it to the VPS, and make it executable. The validator’s verify action performs read-only checks of compute, memory, operating system, and storage resources.
For a single-host master, run:
zenoss-install-host-validate -a verify -d single -r master
For a multi-host installation, use the role option that matches the host being checked: master, delegate, or collector, following the command forms in the prerequisites document.

One-click scans. No signup required.
How to handle validator failures
- CPU or memory error: resize the VPS or choose a plan with the required resources. Do not proceed hoping that a later service deployment will compensate.
- Operating-system error: verify the exact distribution, release, architecture, locale, and kernel. Rebuild the VPS from a supported image if necessary.
- Storage error: check both the filesystem size and the mount path. A large disk mounted at the wrong path does not satisfy a path-specific check.
- Network error: correct hostname, DNS, reachability, firewall, or Docker-subnet conflicts, then rerun the validator.
Repeat the check until reported errors are resolved. Save the validator output with your deployment notes so that a later rebuild can be compared against the known-good baseline.
Step 3: Install and prepare Docker
The current master-host procedure specifies Docker CE 20.10.17. Install that documented version from the repository appropriate to your selected RHEL-compatible distribution, then enable and start the Docker service. Do not silently substitute a newer major release when following a release-specific Zenoss guide.

Configure Docker’s temporary directory
Zenoss’s procedure links Docker’s temporary working area to /tmp. Apply the documented configuration, reload the service manager if required by the procedure, and restart Docker. Confirm that Docker can create temporary files there and that the filesystem has the 16 GB minimum allocated during provisioning.
Apply the systemd timeout drop-in
Create the systemd drop-in specified by the master-host instructions and set TimeoutSec=300. Reload systemd and restart Docker so the setting is active. This longer timeout helps Docker operations complete on a busy VPS instead of being terminated by a short service-manager timeout.
Check the bridge subnet and DNS settings
Inspect Docker’s bridge network against the VPS subnet and the networks used by monitored devices. If the ranges overlap, change Docker’s bip value and DNS settings as described in the installation documentation, then restart Docker and verify container reachability. A bridge conflict can look like a Zenoss service failure even when the containers themselves are healthy.
Step 4: Install supporting host packages
Install the supporting packages listed by the selected release’s prerequisites. The documented list includes NFS tooling, DNS utilities, time-synchronization support, and httpd-tools where required. Package names differ slightly between RHEL-family releases, so use the package names in the guide for the exact operating-system version you selected.
Keep SELinux, firewall, and service-manager changes documented as you make them. If your security policy requires exceptions for NFS, registry access, or inter-host communication, obtain those rules before the deployment reaches the service-start phase.
Step 5: Configure the repository mirror and registry authentication
Control Center expects a repository mirror and an authenticated internal registry. Install the repository-mirror components for the chosen Zenoss release, configure the credentials supplied through the support portal, and verify that the master can reach the mirror and registry over the intended network path.

Use the same release identifier for the mirror, service-definition RPM, and image archives. A successful download of one component does not prove that the complete set is consistent; check filenames and release notes before loading anything.
Step 6: Stage and load the Zenoss images
- Copy the archives. Transfer the authenticated
.runimage archives to the Control Center master using your approved secure-copy method. - Set executable permission. Mark each archive executable, as required by the image-loading procedure.
- Load the images. Run the documented image-loading process so the archives are imported into the master’s local registry.
- Verify the registry. Confirm that every image required by the selected release is present and that the registry reports the expected tags.
- Install matching service definitions. Install the release-matched service-definition RPM. For Core 6.2.1, this is
zenoss-core-service-6.2.1-1.noarch.rpm.
For Core 6.2.1, stage the HBase, OpenTSDB, and Core archives named in the entitlement section. If you are installing another branch, replace the entire set with that branch’s names; do not mix a 6.2.1 service RPM with images from a different release.
Step 7: Install the master and any delegates
Single-host deployment
Follow the release’s single-host procedure after the master prerequisites, repository mirror, image registry, and service definitions are ready. The master hosts the Control Center services and Zenoss components on one VPS. Use this layout for testing or development, not as a production high-availability design.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Multi-host deployment
Install the master first, then install delegates or collectors according to the role-specific procedure. Every additional host must pass its own role-appropriate validator and match the master on distribution, release, kernel, locale, time synchronization, and network assumptions.
Configure ZooKeeper where required
Multi-host layouts use the ZooKeeper configuration steps in the official installation index. Complete that coordination layer before deploying the full service set, and verify name resolution and reachability between the participating hosts. A partially configured ensemble can prevent otherwise correctly installed services from registering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 8: Deploy Zenoss services through Control Center
The documented order is deliberate:
- Verify every host.
- Download and stage release files.
- Install the repository mirror.
- Stage Docker images in the local registry.
- Install the Control Center master.
- Install delegates or collectors when using a multi-host design.
- Configure ZooKeeper for the multi-host topology.
- Run the final single-host or multi-host deployment tasks for the selected release.
At the end of deployment, set administrator credentials, confirm that Control Center services are running, and inspect Zenoss component health before adding a large device inventory. Start with a small representative device set so DNS, credentials, polling, event flow, and performance can be corrected without disrupting a full rollout.

Post-installation verification checklist
- All hosts report the expected distribution, release, kernel, architecture, and
en_US.UTF-8locale. - NTP or chrony reports synchronized time on every host.
- The documented filesystems are mounted at the intended paths and retain free space after deployment.
- Docker CE 20.10.17 is enabled, running, uses the configured temporary directory, and has the 300-second systemd timeout.
- The Docker bridge subnet does not overlap the VPS or monitoring networks.
- The internal registry contains every image for the selected release, with matching tags.
- The repository mirror and service-definition RPM correspond to the same release as the images.
- Control Center services and Zenoss components report healthy status.
- DNS resolves service and device names as expected in both directions where required.
- A test device produces normal metrics and events before the production inventory is imported.
- Backups can be written to the dedicated backup area and restored in a test procedure.
Troubleshooting the most common installation failures
The validator rejects storage
Check the actual mounted filesystem, not only the VPS provider’s advertised disk size. Confirm that /tmp, Docker data, internal-services data, application data, and backups are separate and meet their minimums. Correct the mount or resize the volume, then rerun the validator.
Docker starts but deployment cannot reach services
Investigate overlapping bridge and VPS subnets first. Correct the bip and DNS settings, restart Docker, and retest container-to-container and host-to-host reachability. Then check firewall rules and DNS before reloading images.
Image loading or service installation fails
Verify that the archive is executable, the entitlement credentials are valid, the repository mirror is reachable, and every filename belongs to the same Zenoss release. A Core 6.2.1 RPM paired with another branch’s images is an unsupported combination.
Multi-host components do not register
Compare distribution, release, kernel, locale, hostname resolution, clock synchronization, and firewall policy across all hosts. Confirm that ZooKeeper was configured according to the multi-host procedure before retrying service deployment.
Services become unstable after adding devices
Review application-data, internal-services, Docker, and backup utilization rather than assuming the VPS CPU is the only limit. Expand the relevant filesystem, review retention, and distribute collectors using the multi-host design when the inventory outgrows a single host.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keeping the installation maintainable
Store the exact release’s planning, installation, configuration, administration, upgrade, and release-note documents with the deployment record. Record the operating-system image, kernel, filesystem sizes, Docker version, bridge subnet, registry tags, service-definition RPM, and validator output. This information turns a future upgrade or rebuild into a repeatable procedure instead of a reconstruction exercise.
Apply upgrades only with the release-specific upgrade guide. Image names, repository requirements, ports, credentials, and service behavior can change between branches, so a procedure that worked for Core 6.2.1 should not be copied unchanged to another Zenoss release.
Bottom line
A reliable Zenoss VPS installation is primarily a preparation exercise: choose a supported x86_64 RHEL-compatible host, create every documented filesystem, pass the role-specific validator, install Docker CE 20.10.17 with the required timeout and temporary-directory settings, stage matching authenticated images and RPMs, and deploy through the Control Center sequence. Keep a single VPS for development and design a role-separated multi-host environment when the monitoring system is intended for production.
