To install Vulcan Anti-Cheat, run a supported Spigot, Paper, or Paper fork, download Vulcan from its official Spigot listing, install the matching PacketEvents dependency, and place both JAR files in the server’s plugins folder. Start the server, confirm that Vulcan loads, then configure alerts, punishments, checks, and optional Discord notifications from the generated configuration. Folia is not supported, and aggressive punishment settings should be tested on a staging server before production use.
What Vulcan requires
Vulcan is a server-side Minecraft anti-cheat plugin. It inspects player behaviour and client network packets, raises violation alerts, and can execute commands when configured thresholds are reached. Its operation depends on the server software, the Minecraft version supported by the current release, and the PacketEvents plugin.
Supported server software
The official installation guidance states: “Vulcan supports Spigot, Paper, and forks of Paper. Vulcan does not have support for Folia at the moment.” Product material also lists software such as Pufferfish and Purpur, but compatibility changes as Minecraft and plugin versions change. Check the current Vulcan Spigot listing before deployment, especially when using a less common fork; the documentation warns that some Spigot forks may not work correctly.

Install Vulcan and PacketEvents
1. Confirm the server type
Stop and identify the software and version used by the server. If it is Folia, do not proceed: the installation guide says Vulcan does not support it. For Paper forks, verify that the fork is listed or otherwise confirmed as compatible by the current Vulcan release rather than assuming that every fork of Spigot will work.

2. Obtain the official Vulcan download
Purchase and download Vulcan through the official Spigot listing. Do not use an unofficial mirror or a repackaged JAR. Keep the downloaded file unchanged so that its version can be identified when you request support.
3. Download the matching PacketEvents build
Download PacketEvents for the server type and Minecraft version you are running. PacketEvents is not optional. The official guide explains that it “allows Vulcan to read client packets which allows in detecting cheaters” and warns that Vulcan will not run without it. Treat a missing or incompatible PacketEvents JAR as an installation failure, not as a feature you can disable.
4. Copy both JAR files
- Stop the Minecraft server completely.
- Open the server’s
pluginsdirectory. - Copy
PacketEvents.jarand the Vulcan JAR into that directory. Keep only the versions you intend to load; remove obsolete copies to avoid duplicate-plugin or version-conflict errors. - Start the server and watch the console from the beginning of startup.
5. Confirm a successful load
A successful startup should show PacketEvents loading before or alongside Vulcan and should create Vulcan’s plugin data files. Look for startup errors, dependency warnings, or messages identifying an unsupported server version. If Vulcan reports that PacketEvents is absent, stop the server, check the file name and location, and verify that the dependency itself loaded without an error.
Find the generated configuration
On a conventional layout, Vulcan writes its files under the Vulcan plugin data folder, normally plugins/Vulcan/. The main file is config.yml. Use the folder and file names created by your installed build as the authoritative location; do not create a second configuration elsewhere. Make a backup before editing.

YAML indentation matters. Preserve the existing key structure, use spaces rather than tabs, and edit a copy when experimenting. A malformed value can prevent a reload or cause a setting to fall back to its default. The documentation notes that updates automatically add new options to configuration files, so review the generated file after every upgrade instead of assuming an older file contains every current key.
Make the first configuration pass
Start from the default settings. The official FAQ describes the default as the best available configuration supplied with the plugin, while also explaining that the best configuration depends heavily on each server. Defaults provide a safe baseline for learning how alerts and checks behave; changing many thresholds at once makes later troubleshooting difficult.

Alerts
Alerts are staff-facing notifications that a check has detected suspicious behaviour. In the configuration, set the alert format, message contents, and who can see alerts according to your moderation workflow. Keep enough context for staff to identify the player, check, and violation level without exposing internal moderation commands to ordinary players.
- Choose a concise format that identifies the player and check.
- Ensure the permission or staff channel used for alerts is limited to moderators.
- Change one formatting or visibility setting at a time, then trigger a controlled test.
- Use the in-game help or menu commands to inspect available check and player information.
Punishments
Vulcan executes the commands you configure when a punishment condition is met. It does not maintain a historical count of punishments. The FAQ’s wording is explicit: “Vulcan simply executes whatever commands you configure it to; it does not keep track of how many times players are punished…” Therefore, a rule such as “ban after three kicks” cannot be created by assuming Vulcan will remember the first two kicks.

For cumulative policies, use a punishment plugin or an API integration that records events and performs the counting. In Vulcan’s own command actions, define the exact server command to execute, check whether your command syntax matches the installed Minecraft version, and test it with a non-player account or a controlled test account. Begin with warnings or temporary actions while you measure false positives.
Checks
Checks are the individual detection modules. Enable only the checks appropriate for your server and gameplay rules, and use the supplied defaults as the starting point. A check that is suitable for a competitive minigame may be too sensitive for a heavily modified survival server.

- Record which checks are enabled before changing them.
- Change thresholds or actions in small groups so that a resulting alert can be attributed to a known edit.
- Disable a specific check when investigating a suspected false positive rather than disabling the entire plugin.
- Do not treat a high violation number as proof by itself; combine alerts with replay, staff observation, and server logs.
Discord alerts
Discord notifications are a separate configuration area covered by an illustrated Discord webhook guide. Create and secure the webhook according to that guide, then configure the corresponding Vulcan Discord-alert settings. Send test notifications to a private moderation channel first. Avoid publishing a webhook URL in screenshots, logs, issue reports, or configuration backups; anyone who obtains it may be able to post to the channel.
Useful Vulcan commands
A public configuration example lists the following commands. Exact names, arguments, permissions, and output can vary by installed version, so verify them with /vulcan help before putting them in staff documentation or automated scripts.

Use angle-bracket arguments as actual player names or check names; do not type the brackets. If a command is rejected, run the help command on the server and compare the syntax with the version-specific output.
API and addons
The Vulcan API is optional developer functionality, not a separate anti-cheat plugin. To use it, obtain the API through the verified Discord API-and-addons channel and set enable-api: true in the configuration. Only enable it when a plugin or integration actually requires it, because unused developer features add another component to maintain.

Vulcan’s product disclaimer acknowledges that false positives and bypasses can occur. Anti-cheat alerts are evidence for a moderation decision, not an automatic substitute for one. A legitimate player can trigger a check because of unusual latency, server lag, a plugin interaction, or gameplay that resembles the behaviour being detected.

Recommended investigation sequence
- Identify the exact check and player from the alert.
- Temporarily disable the affected check with the configuration or
/vulcan disablecheck <check>; do not immediately disable every check. - Collect the player’s client and server context, the time of the event, relevant logs, and a video or other reproducible demonstration.
- Try to reproduce the alert under controlled conditions, including the same game mode and connection conditions when possible.
- Keep punishment actions conservative until the behaviour is understood.
- Report the case through Vulcan’s support process with the evidence attached.
The support process requires joining the Vulcan Discord, verifying the account with purchase information, and opening a ticket. A report without the check name, reproduction steps, video, and logs is much harder to diagnose.
Upgrade and maintenance procedure
Before upgrading Vulcan or PacketEvents, take a server backup and note the currently installed versions. Read the current compatibility information because supported Minecraft versions and server forks can change. Upgrade on staging first, start the server, and inspect the console for dependency or migration errors.

New options are added automatically after updates; review their defaults and decide whether your existing alert and punishment policy still fits them. Test alerts, a harmless command action, and any Discord notification before returning the server to normal traffic.
Troubleshooting common installation problems
“Vulcan will not start”
- Confirm that the server is not Folia.
- Confirm that both JAR files are directly inside
plugins, not inside a nested download folder. - Check that PacketEvents loaded successfully and is compatible with the server and Vulcan versions.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete JAR files, restart, and read the first error in the console rather than only the final shutdown message.
No configuration file was created
Allow the server to complete startup and inspect the plugin data folder created by Vulcan. If startup failed, the file may not be generated. Correct the dependency or compatibility error first, then restart. Do not download a random configuration from another version as a replacement.
Alerts appear but punishments do not run
Check the configured command action, threshold, permission context, and whether the relevant check is enabled. Remember that Vulcan runs the command you provide; it does not supply a separate punishment-history counter. Test the command manually with a safe action and confirm that the server itself accepts the syntax.
Too many alerts after an update
Compare the newly generated options with your saved configuration, identify the specific check involved, and return to the default value for that option before making smaller adjustments. Collect evidence before permanently lowering thresholds or adding harsher actions.
Discord notifications fail
Verify the webhook configuration, destination channel, and network access from the server. Rotate a webhook that may have been exposed. Test with a private channel and confirm that the Vulcan Discord-alert settings match the version you installed.
