Install HelixSR by downloading the current release archive, extracting it to a permanent folder, and running ./helixsr-setup.sh from that folder. On the first run, allow the setup to download NVIDIA’s DLSS library and build its local network, then choose the method offered for each game. In the game, select AMD FSR for the direct replacement route or DLSS for the OptiScaler route.
HelixSR is an unofficial community project, not a Valve or SteamOS feature. Its author says it was developed and tested on an AMD BC-250 running Linux with Mesa RADV, not on Steam Deck hardware, so Deck compatibility and performance remain conditional.
What HelixSR does on Steam Deck
HelixSR is a Linux/Proton implementation that provides super resolution for compatible Direct3D 12 games. It replaces or supplies an upscaling path so a game can render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a higher output resolution. HelixSR does not provide frame generation itself. A game’s existing frame-generation feature, or OptiScaler’s FSR frame generation where available, can continue to operate separately.
The project is community-made. It is not part of Valve’s Steam Deck software, and the author does not claim Steam Deck hardware testing. The README identifies the AMD BC-250 at 2000 MHz with Linux and Mesa RADV as the development and test platform. Treat the instructions below as a compatibility path to try, not a guarantee that every Deck game will launch or run faster.

A game may expose more than one usable route. The setup program offers methods that apply to the detected game, so the right choice depends on the game’s actual API and which upscaler interfaces it contains.
What to prepare before installing
- Use SteamOS Desktop Mode so you can work with a file manager and Konsole.
- Have an internet connection for the first-run NVIDIA DLSS download and dependency retrieval.
- Choose a folder in your home area that you will keep. Do not extract the archive into a temporary downloads location that you may later delete.
- Close the target game before installing, updating, switching routes, or uninstalling. The setup modifies files used by the game.
- Be prepared for the setup to handle Python dependencies. The Linux route needs Python 3 with numpy; the installer can use existing system dependencies, offer to install them, or download portable Python into
~/.local/share/HelixSR. The portable option is useful on read-only SteamOS systems.
The shader compiler runs through Proton. The README says downloads are pinned to exact versions and checked with SHA-256, which reduces the risk of silently using an altered dependency, but you should still run the setup from the official release archive.
Install HelixSR step by step
1. Download and extract the release
- Open the project’s official GitHub releases page and download the current archive. At the time covered by this guide, the README identifies version 1.8.1 and the file
HelixSR-1.8.1.zip. - Extract the ZIP into a persistent folder in your home directory. Keep the extracted files together because the setup, uninstall script, generated network, and downloaded components are managed from this location.
2. Start the Linux setup script
- Open Konsole or another terminal in the extracted HelixSR folder.
- Run
./helixsr-setup.sh. - If you prefer the graphical file manager, double-click the script and choose Run in terminal.
Do not start the setup while the game is running. If you are updating an existing installation or changing a game’s route, close the game first as well.

The first run asks whether it may download NVIDIA’s DLSS DLL. Approve that download if you intend to use the normal HelixSR routes. The setup then builds HelixSR’s network locally. When it checks Python and numpy, choose an existing installation, allow dependency installation, or let it fetch portable Python into ~/.local/share/HelixSR. The latter is the least dependent on SteamOS’s system image.
Wait for the setup to finish its dependency and shader-compiler work before choosing a game. Interrupting the process can leave an incomplete installation; rerun the setup afterward so it can complete or repair the generated files.

4. Choose a method for each detected game
For every detected game, HelixSR presents the methods that apply to that title. The two ordinary routes are:

The menu shown by setup is game-specific. If only one of these methods is offered, that is the route the project considers applicable to the detected files.

The setup may expose an experimental d option. Do not make it your default choice. The README describes this loader as new, tested in very few games on Linux/Proton, untested on Windows, and vulnerable to breakage after a game update. It can also crash. More importantly, the loader changes what the game sees, so anti-cheat software may treat it as tampering. The project says not to use it in online games or games with anti-cheat.
Configure the upscaler in the game
Direct FSR replacement route
If you selected f, open the game’s graphics or upscaling settings and choose AMD FSR. There is no separate HelixSR menu for this route: the game calls its replaced FSR path, and HelixSR runs behind that interface until you remove the installation.
OptiScaler route
If you selected o, choose DLSS in the game’s normal upscaling selector. OptiScaler presents the DLSS-facing interface while routing the FSR 3.1 backend to HelixSR.

To change the available OptiScaler options in-game:

- Press
Insert. - Open Upscaling.
- Open Upscalers.
- Open the FFX Upscaler list.
- Select
FSR HelixSR (3.1.5)or another HelixSR option shown for that game.
The exact list depends on what the game and installed OptiScaler build expose. If you used the direct replacement route, these OptiScaler menus will not appear.
Choosing between routes when both are offered

There is no universal best route. Use the method setup offers for the game’s API and installed upscaler interfaces, and switch routes later if the first one is unstable.
Add a game that setup did not detect
Steam games are normally found automatically. At the end of setup, you can provide a folder path for a game that was not detected. The README also points to generated manual-install instructions. Use the folder containing the game’s executable or the location requested by those generated instructions, then let setup apply the same route-selection process.
Non-Steam games and other Proton prefixes generally require this manual path. Make sure the game is closed before supplying it, and record which route you chose so you know whether the in-game selector should be AMD FSR or DLSS.

How to tell whether the installation is working
Start the game only after setup finishes and use the selector required by your chosen route. For the direct route, the relevant check is that AMD FSR can be selected. For OptiScaler, check that DLSS is selectable and that the Insert menu contains the HelixSR entry under Upscaling > Upscalers > FFX Upscaler.
Do not treat a higher displayed frame rate as a guaranteed result. HelixSR’s published timings are for the upscaling pass on the author’s AMD BC-250, not complete game frame times and not Steam Deck measurements.
Compatibility limits you should check before relying on it
- Direct3D 12 only: Vulkan games are outside the stated support.
- AMD architecture: The README claims RDNA 1 and newer support and explicitly excludes Vega because Vega lacks wave32.
- Proton dependency: Linux support is through Proton. A Windows-native installation is not covered by the author’s testing statement.
- Game-specific interfaces: The setup only offers methods that match what it detects. A game with no compatible FSR, DLSS, XeSS, or OptiScaler-facing path may not be usable.
- No Deck validation: The published test platform is an AMD BC-250 with Linux/Mesa RADV, not a Steam Deck. No Deck-specific performance figures are published.
- No built-in frame generation: HelixSR performs super resolution. Any frame generation must come from the game or a separate OptiScaler-supported feature.
Published timing figures and what they mean
The HelixSR project README, version 1.8.1, reports the following GPU-time figures for an AMD BC-250 running at 2000 MHz. Each number is the time for the upscaling pass under the stated output and input resolutions; it is not a whole-game frame time, frame-rate measurement, or Steam Deck benchmark.

These figures show how the pass varied with output size and quality mode on that test system. They do not establish how HelixSR will perform on a Steam Deck, in a particular game, or alongside a game’s post-processing and frame-generation workload.

- Close the game and any launcher process that may still be using its files.
- Run
./helixsr-setup.shagain from the extracted HelixSR folder. - Choose the update or switch option when setup presents it.
- Select the new route and let setup replace or regenerate the required files.
- Launch the game and use the matching selector: AMD FSR for the direct route, or DLSS followed by the OptiScaler menu for the OptiScaler route.
Rerunning setup is also the normal way to refresh a missing NVIDIA DLL or regenerate the local network after a failed first run.

Remove HelixSR and restore the original files
- Close the game.
- From the extracted HelixSR folder, run
./helixsr-uninstall.sh. - When prompted, choose whether to delete generated files and downloads as well as removing the game integration.
- Launch the game only after the script reports completion.
The README says the uninstaller restores replaced files. For the OptiScaler route, backups are kept in HelixSR/backup. For direct replacement, original libraries use the *.original.dll naming pattern. Keep those backups until you are satisfied that the game runs normally without the mod.
Troubleshoot the common failure signs
Red border, very low resolution, or a shaking image
The project’s troubleshooting guidance attributes these symptoms to the HelixSR network not running. Inspect helixsr.log near the game’s files. Then rerun setup and allow it to download NVIDIA’s DLL again. These steps are the author’s documented remedy, not an independently verified Steam Deck test.
DLSS does not appear in the game
If DLSS is missing, try the game’s FSR or XeSS option where available; OptiScaler can route those interfaces when the installed game path supports them. If no suitable selector appears, consult the project’s issue tracker and include the logs requested by its instructions.
The game stops working after an update
Game updates can change the files or interfaces that a mod depends on. Close the game, rerun setup, and use its update or switch option. If the title remains broken, run ./helixsr-uninstall.sh to restore the backed-up originals, then test the unmodified game before trying another route.
SteamOS itself is unstable
Valve’s general Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance covers both LCD and OLED models. It recommends installing available system updates and restarting when addressing general instability. That is platform-level advice, not a HelixSR-specific fix.
Online games and anti-cheat
Do not use the experimental d loader with online games or games protected by anti-cheat. Because the loader changes what the game sees, anti-cheat systems may interpret it as tampering. The ordinary f and o routes are the documented choices for compatible games, but you remain responsible for checking a game’s rules before modifying its files.
When HelixSR is a reasonable experiment
HelixSR is most defensible on a single-player Direct3D 12 title that the setup detects, where the game offers a clear FSR, DLSS, or OptiScaler-facing path and you can restore the original files. It is a poor fit when the game is Vulkan-only, uses an excluded Vega GPU, depends on anti-cheat, or has no compatible upscaler interface.
