Install one NPC-AI overhaul at a time, match its current file to your Skyrim edition and runtime, use a mod manager, let LOOT identify ordering issues, then follow the overhaul’s own compatibility instructions. Back up your save and mod list first: neither AI Overhaul SSE nor Immersive Citizens has a universal guarantee that adding, updating, or removing it mid-playthrough is safe.
What an NPC AI overhaul changes
Skyrim NPC-AI mods replace or extend the schedules, combat responses, packages, scenes, and other behavior data that determine where citizens go and how they react. They are not interchangeable cosmetic plugins. An overhaul can touch the same NPC records, cells, navmesh-adjacent world edits, dialogue, or settlement layouts as other mods, so a safe installation depends on the complete plugin list rather than on a single “best” load-order slot.
The two major approaches covered here are AI Overhaul SSE and Immersive Citizens. Pick one according to the behavior you want and the conflicts in the rest of your setup; do not install both as a default combination.

AI Overhaul SSE vs. Immersive Citizens

Compare the alternatives on five practical questions: how many NPC records they touch, whether they add markers or world edits, which settlement and appearance mods you use, which patches exist for your exact versions, and whether you are willing to maintain those patches after updates. No single load order can be prescribed without seeing the complete mod list.

Before downloading: establish a safe baseline
Identify the game you are actually running
Write down the Skyrim edition (for example, Special Edition or another supported branch), the executable/runtime version, and the platform. A file made for a different runtime can fail before you ever reach an NPC. Record the overhaul version, every required master, and any optional files you intend to use.
Freeze a recovery point
- Exit the game and your mod manager.
- Back up the current save files to a separate location. Keep at least one save from before the overhaul is enabled.
- Export or capture the active plugin list and mod order from your manager.
- Note your current INI or profile configuration if your manager supports profiles.
This creates a way back if the game crashes, an NPC loses a routine, or a patch proves incompatible. The available documentation does not establish a universal safety guarantee for installing, updating, or removing an AI overhaul on an existing playthrough.
Inventory likely conflicts
Mark any mod that changes NPC appearance, face or body records, city or village layouts, interiors, dialogue, scenes, cells, combat behavior, or the same AI packages. Also note patches that explicitly name the overhaul. A similarly named patch is not evidence that it supports both AI Overhaul SSE and Immersive Citizens.
Choose one overhaul and the correct file variant
When the main AI Overhaul SSE file makes sense
Use the main version when its broader schedule and behavior changes are the goal and you can check conflicts for the NPCs it edits. The author-described figures—about 250 NPCs, 275-plus custom packages or behaviors, and 300-plus idle markers—are feature counts from the version 1.8.5 readme, not independent measurements of performance or success.
When AI Overhaul SSE Lite is safer for a crowded loadout
The Lite description emphasizes avoiding direct NPC edits and additional markers. That can reduce one class of record conflict, but it also means the behavior set is not equivalent to the main file. Read the current description and readme together; do not assume that a patch for the main version applies to Lite.

When to consider Immersive Citizens
Immersive Citizens is a separate design with its own configuration and compatibility rules. Its documentation identifies city, village, and interior layout changes as the principal risk area, while dialogue, scenes, and cell-setting edits can also interfere. Choose it only after checking the current compatibility information against every relevant settlement and environment mod in your list.
Install with a mod manager
Vortex is one available Nexus Mods manager for Skyrim Special Edition; other established managers can perform the same basic job. The important safety property is not the brand of manager but that it keeps files, profiles, plugins, and deployment state visible and reversible.
- Open a profile dedicated to the Skyrim edition and runtime you recorded.
- Download the exact main or Lite file you selected from the overhaul’s current files page.
- Install it through the manager’s normal mod-install action. Do not copy folder names from an old tutorial as if they are guaranteed to match the current archive.
- Inspect the installer choices and select only the intended variant, optional component, or supported language file.
- Enable the plugin that belongs to that variant. If the archive contains several similarly named plugins, use its current readme rather than guessing.
- Install only patches required by mods present in your own loadout, and make sure each patch names the exact overhaul and versions you use.
- Deploy or apply the manager’s changes, then confirm that the mod and plugin show as enabled without an unresolved missing-master warning.
A paid membership is not a safety requirement. The manager and mod files are digital software; no physical book, game disc, or accessory is needed for this installation.
Sort plugins, then read every warning
What LOOT can and cannot do
Run LOOT after the overhaul and its patches are enabled. It can sort plugins using its metadata and display warnings, missing masters, and known ordering notes. It is a sorting aid, not a universal compatibility patcher: it cannot merge conflicting NPC records or create a patch that the author did not publish.
How to apply the result
- Run LOOT against the profile you will actually launch.
- Resolve missing masters before starting the game.
- Read each warning, especially messages naming a city, interior, NPC, cell, or a required patch.
- Open the overhaul’s current compatibility page and every named patch’s instructions.
- Apply a mod-specific order only when the author or patch author documents it. If that instruction conflicts with a generic sorter suggestion, investigate the named rule rather than blindly forcing either result.
Immersive Citizens publishes particularly specific ordering requirements for its main plugin, certain environment edits, and supported patches. It also recommends keeping LOOT’s masterlist current. Those rules are version-specific; verify them against the release you installed.

Build a load order for your actual mod list
There is no safe universal position such as “always last” for an AI overhaul. A final order must account for every plugin editing the same records. Use this decision process:
- Start with masters and core files. Let your manager and LOOT place official masters and foundational plugins.
- Identify direct record overlaps. For AI Overhaul SSE main, look for plugins editing the same NPCs, AI packages, or markers. For Immersive Citizens, pay special attention to city, village, interior, cell, dialogue, and scene edits.
- Install a purpose-built patch where one exists. A patch should name both sides of the conflict and the versions it supports.
- Follow the patch’s order instruction. The patch may need to load after both source plugins, while a separate environment plugin may have a documented relationship to the overhaul.
- Re-run LOOT and inspect the final warnings. Sorting a new patch can change the displayed order and expose a missing dependency.
- Record the final order. Save a screenshot or export so you can reproduce it after an update.
Do not infer compatibility from a plugin’s name, category, or a patch made for the other overhaul. If no patch covers the exact combination, the responsible choices are to remove one conflicting mod, choose the Lite variant where appropriate, or leave the combination uninstalled until a documented solution exists.
Existing saves: a cautious change workflow
Changing AI behavior on an established character is a risk decision, not a guaranteed-safe procedure. The available documentation does not prove that every install, update, or removal works cleanly mid-playthrough.
- Make a separate backup of the save and the complete mod profile.
- Use a new manual save in a quiet location, not an autosave during a quest scene or combat.
- Change only one overhaul or patch at a time.
- Launch with the intended plugin set and confirm that the main menu appears and the test save loads.
- Visit several affected locations and observe schedules, combat responses, doors, interiors, and follower or quest interactions before adding another change.
- If a problem appears, return to the pre-change save and profile rather than repeatedly saving over the damaged state.
Immersive Citizens’ documented refresh action
Immersive Citizens documents a configuration route using its “Citizens control” power to update the mod’s data after extra NPCs are added to an existing save. Use that action only as documented for the exact Immersive Citizens version. It is not a general repair command for AI Overhaul SSE or for unrelated mods.
Compatibility checks by mod category
NPC appearance and body overhauls
Appearance mods may edit the same NPC records that AI Overhaul SSE main changes. Find a patch that explicitly supports both products and their versions. If the patch is for Lite, do not substitute the main file; if it is for Immersive Citizens, do not assume either AI Overhaul variant is covered.

City, village, and interior overhauls
These are the most important checks for Immersive Citizens because altered layouts and cells can invalidate the assumptions behind its routines. Read the author’s compatibility list for every settlement and interior package in your loadout.
Dialogue, scenes, and cell-setting mods
Immersive Citizens’ documentation also flags dialogue, scene, and cell-setting changes as possible conflicts. Check for a named patch and follow its ordering instructions instead of relying on LOOT alone.
Other AI or combat behavior mods
Two plugins that both alter packages or combat responses can produce behavior that looks random even when the game launches. Select one primary NPC-AI overhaul, then add only explicitly compatible behavior extensions.

Testing should isolate the overhaul from the rest of your changes. This is a prudent procedure, not a claim of a measured success rate.

- Load the backed-up test save and wait for scripts to settle before fast-traveling.
- Visit a town, a village, an interior, and a location affected by any patch you installed.
- Watch an NPC through part of a normal day: leaving home, working, idling, travelling, and returning.
- Trigger a low-risk combat encounter and observe whether citizens flee, fight, seek shelter, or resume routines afterward.
- Check doors, scenes, dialogue, followers, and quests known to depend on the edited locations.
- Exit, relaunch, and load the same test save to catch problems that appear only after a restart.
Keep notes of the exact plugin set during this test. If you add another mod later, repeat the relevant checks rather than assuming the earlier result still applies.

Troubleshooting common failures
The game reports a missing master
Return to the manager, inspect the plugin’s requirements, and install or enable the named master for the correct edition and runtime. Do not bypass the warning by deleting a required plugin unless the overhaul’s current documentation explicitly provides an alternative file.
NPCs stand idle, vanish, or follow the wrong schedule
Check for a direct NPC or AI-package conflict, then verify that the correct overhaul variant and patch are enabled. Re-run LOOT, read the mod-specific compatibility notes, and test from the pre-change save if the behavior began immediately after installation.
A city or interior becomes unstable
Review every layout, cell, dialogue, and scene plugin affecting that location. This symptom is especially relevant to Immersive Citizens. Disable only the newest change in a test profile, or install a patch explicitly covering the exact combination.

Confirm deployment, profile selection, plugin enablement, and that you did not install Lite while expecting main-version behavior. Check the archive’s current readme for the plugin name instead of relying on an old manual-install path.
An update introduces new problems
Restore the backed-up profile and save, compare the old and new version requirements, and read the update notes. Do not assume that a patch made for the previous release remains valid.
Maintenance after installation
- Keep a copy of the working plugin order and patch list.
- Before updating Skyrim, the overhaul, or a major settlement mod, check the active files page and included documentation for changed requirements.
- Update one foundational component at a time and repeat the controlled test.
- Remove obsolete patches only after confirming that the newer file includes their function or that a replacement patch exists.
- Keep LOOT’s masterlist current, but continue to read the overhaul author’s instructions.
