To play PlayStation 3 games in RPCS3, install the emulator from the official RPCS3 download page, install Sony’s official PS3 firmware, add a game dump you are entitled to use, select a renderer supported by your graphics hardware, configure input if needed, and check the exact title in RPCS3’s live compatibility database. RPCS3 is free, but it does not include PS3 firmware or games, and compatibility varies by title and by PC.
What you need before installing RPCS3
RPCS3’s requirements change as development continues, so use the project’s current download page as the final authority. The page currently lists these platform baselines:
| Platform | Requirement shown on the download page | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or later, 64-bit | Windows builds require the Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable. |
| Linux | Ubuntu 22.04 or later with Kernel 6.6 or later | Use the package intended for your distribution and verify the current page’s notes. |
| macOS | macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later | Check the current macOS package and any build-specific instructions. |
These are the requirements displayed for the current page snapshot, not a permanent promise that future builds will have identical requirements. Recheck the live page whenever you install a newer build or move RPCS3 to another computer.

You also need a graphics driver that exposes a renderer RPCS3 can use. The setup documentation recommends Vulkan and states that the driver should support Vulkan 1.2. That is a driver/API requirement, not a promise that every Vulkan-capable computer will run every game well.

- A keyboard and mouse for setup; a controller is optional.
Do not download PS3 games or firmware from unofficial “ROM” or “custom firmware” sites. The setup guide specifically directs users to obtain the firmware from Sony or from their own PS3 and to use game dumps they legally own.
Before you download: a short checklist
Have your operating system version, graphics hardware and preferred game identified first. This lets you compare the live RPCS3 requirements with the machine you actually plan to use instead of assuming that a newer-looking PC is automatically suitable. If you plan to use a controller, decide whether the target game needs only ordinary buttons and sticks or also motion and pressure-sensitive input.
Create a stable location for the RPCS3 application and another location for your game dumps. A stable path makes library scanning easier and avoids broken entries if a folder is moved after it has been added. Keep the original dump format intact while you are troubleshooting; changing several file locations or formats at once makes it harder to identify the cause of a problem.
How do I download RPCS3?
1. Open the official download page
Go to the RPCS3 project’s download page and choose the package for your operating system. The page publishes current builds, platform packages and SHA checksums. Use the checksum-verification instructions on that page when you want to confirm that the downloaded archive matches the published file. A checksum match confirms that the file you received is the same file represented by the page’s published value; it does not make an unofficial download source trustworthy.
2. Install the Windows prerequisite when applicable
On Windows, install the Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable required by the RPCS3 package before launching the emulator. If it is already installed, Windows may offer a repair or no-op installation instead. Do not substitute an unrelated runtime simply because it has a similar name; use the prerequisite identified on the RPCS3 download page.
3. Extract or install the package according to its platform instructions
Follow the instructions supplied with the package you downloaded. Keep RPCS3 in a folder where your user account can read and write its configuration and cache files. Launch the executable or application only after extraction or installation has completed. On Linux and macOS, use the package and launch method intended for that platform rather than applying Windows instructions to a different build.
The download page may show a build label such as v0.0.40-19389. Treat that as a version identifier for that particular build, not as a permanent requirement or performance rating; check the live page for the current release.

Do I need PS3 firmware?
Yes. RPCS3 and the PS3 system software are separate. The emulator requires an official PS3 firmware package before it can initialize many system functions and run games correctly. Downloading RPCS3 alone does not install that software.
Get the official firmware file
Obtain PS3UPDAT.PUP from Sony or from your own PS3 console. Avoid modified or unofficial firmware files. The file name is significant; do not rename an unrelated download to make it appear to be firmware. If your browser saves the file in a compressed archive or changes its location, locate the actual .PUP file before starting the installer.
Install the firmware in RPCS3
- Start RPCS3.
- Open
Filein the menu bar. - Select
Install Firmware. - Browse to the official
PS3UPDAT.PUPfile. - Confirm the installation and wait for RPCS3 to finish processing it.
If the installer cannot find the package, check that you selected the actual .PUP file rather than the folder containing it, and obtain a fresh official copy if the file is incomplete or corrupt. Firmware installation does not provide games; you still have to add your own legally obtained game files. Installing a second copy of RPCS3 does not replace this step because firmware is installed into the emulator separately.
How do I add my PS3 games?
Use game files you are entitled to use
RPCS3’s setup guidance covers adding legally owned game dumps. It mentions folder-based game files and ISO images for owned discs. The exact dumping process differs between physical discs, digital titles and formats, so consult the current project documentation for the method that applies to your copy. This guide does not direct you to unauthorized downloads.
Add a game folder or ISO
- Start RPCS3 after firmware installation.
- Open
File. - Choose
Add Games. - Select the folder that contains your dumped PS3 games, or select the location appropriate for the supported ISO workflow.
- Let RPCS3 scan the location. Your titles should appear in the game list when recognized.
If you have several dumps, adding their common parent folder can be more convenient than adding every title one by one, provided the folder structure matches the format expected by RPCS3. If a particular game is stored elsewhere, add that location separately. Keep each dump in a stable location. Moving or renaming a game folder later can make the existing library entry point to the wrong path, in which case add the new location again.
If a title does not appear
- Confirm that you used
File → Add Games, rather than merely opening an arbitrary file in the operating system. - Check that the selected location is the game’s top-level folder or the supported ISO location.
- Verify that the dump was created from a game you own and is not an incomplete copy.
- Check the project’s current documentation for format-specific dumping details, especially for digital titles.
- If you moved the files after the first scan, add the new location instead of relying on the old library path.
RPCS3 cannot turn firmware into a game library. Firmware, the emulator application and game dumps are three separate pieces, and each must be present in the correct place.
How do I choose a graphics renderer?
Open the GPU settings
- In RPCS3, open
Configuration. - Select the
GPUsection. - Review the renderers actually listed by your installation.
- Start with
Vulkanwhen it is available and your driver supports Vulkan 1.2, as the setup guide recommends. - Apply the setting and test the specific game you intend to play.
Do not assume that one renderer or one graphics option is best for every computer. The usable choices depend on your GPU, operating-system driver and RPCS3 build. If Vulkan is not exposed, update the graphics driver through the hardware vendor’s supported channel and use another renderer that RPCS3 presents for your system; do not select an option that is absent from the list.

Renderer choices in practice
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Vulkan is listed | Your current installation and driver expose the recommended API. | Start with Vulkan, then compare the result with the title’s compatibility notes. |
| Vulkan is absent | The hardware, driver or build does not expose it to RPCS3. | Check for a supported driver update; otherwise choose a renderer that is actually listed. |
| More than one renderer is listed | Your system offers alternatives, but no option is universally best. | Use the game’s notes and change one renderer at a time while testing. |
Understand what renderer selection can and cannot do
A renderer determines how RPCS3 translates PS3 graphics commands for your PC. It does not change a game’s compatibility status, remove title-specific bugs or guarantee a particular frame rate. Once the renderer is working, use the game’s compatibility entry and title-specific guidance before changing advanced settings. Avoid changing multiple advanced options simultaneously: if the result improves or worsens, you will not know which change caused it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill my game work?
Check the exact game in RPCS3’s live compatibility database before spending time on extensive tuning. Compatibility is title-specific and can change as emulator builds and game tests change. A status is guidance from the database, not a guarantee that the same result will occur on every PC.
Interpret the “Playable” label correctly
RPCS3 defines Playable as games that “can be completed with playable performance and no game breaking glitches.” That definition describes the database category; it does not promise identical performance, graphics settings or controller behavior on your hardware. A title can therefore be listed as Playable while still requiring the renderer, driver version or input method described in its notes.
Check the complete entry, not only the color or status
- Search for the exact title and, where shown, the relevant regional or disc edition.
- Read the notes attached to the entry for known issues, required settings and tested builds.
- Compare your operating system, GPU driver and controller needs with the conditions described in the entry.
- Look for input requirements such as motion or pressure-sensitive controls before buying a new controller.
- Recheck the entry after updating RPCS3 because statuses and recommendations can change.
There is no universal “best RPCS3 setting.” A game marked playable may still need a particular renderer, a controller feature or a title-specific workaround, while another game may remain problematic even on a faster PC. The live entry is the right place to start when a game behaves differently from a neighboring title.
How do I configure a controller?
RPCS3 supports several controller setup approaches. The right choice depends on your operating system, the input handler available in your build, the connection method and the game’s required features.
| Decision | What to check | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system and handler support | Confirm that the controller works with your OS and with an input handler RPCS3 supports. | A controller recognized by the OS may still need a compatible RPCS3 handler or additional mapping. |
| Motion controls | Check whether the game uses tilt, motion or other sensor input. | Some RPCS3 controller approaches do not provide motion controls. |
| Pressure-sensitive buttons | Check whether the title relies on analog pressure for triggers or face buttons. | Some approaches cannot reproduce pressure sensitivity, even when ordinary button input works. |
| Wired versus wireless | Choose a connection your OS and handler can configure reliably. | Wired setup is usually simpler; wireless adds pairing and connection variables. |
Basic controller setup workflow
- Connect the controller by USB or pair it wirelessly through your operating system.
- Open RPCS3’s controller configuration area and select an input handler supported by your installation.
- Choose the appropriate device and map the buttons shown by the handler.
- Test the mapping in the configuration screen before launching the game.
- For a title requiring motion or pressure-sensitive input, verify that the chosen controller method supports those functions; otherwise choose a different supported approach.
The controller guide documents multiple methods but does not establish one universally best controller. A standard USB game controller may be adequate for games using ordinary buttons and sticks, while a title built around PS3 motion or pressure input requires hardware and a handler capable of exposing those features. Wireless convenience is not automatically an advantage if pairing or handler support is unreliable on your operating system.

RPCS3 will not start on Windows
Confirm that you are running a 64-bit Windows 10-or-later installation and that the Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable required by the download page is installed. Re-download the package and compare its SHA checksum with the value published on the project page. If the checksum differs, discard that archive and download a fresh copy from the official page.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Firmware installation fails
Use an official PS3UPDAT.PUP obtained from Sony or your own console. In File → Install Firmware, select the file itself. If the file is damaged or incomplete, obtain it again from an official source rather than substituting an unofficial firmware build. Remember that installing firmware does not add a game to the library.
The game list is empty
Use File → Add Games and select the correct game folder or supported ISO location. If the dump is not recognized, consult the current project documentation for that disc or digital format; the correct dumping procedure is not identical for every type of PS3 content. Also check whether the files were moved after the original scan.
The GPU section does not show Vulkan
RPCS3 can only offer renderers exposed by your hardware and driver. Check that the graphics driver supports Vulkan 1.2, then restart RPCS3 and review the available choices. If Vulkan remains unavailable, use another renderer that the installation actually lists and consult the game’s compatibility notes. Do not treat an absent renderer as a missing checkbox that can be enabled through a random configuration edit.
The game launches but is not playable
Search the exact title in the compatibility database and read the notes before changing settings at random. A database status is not a performance guarantee for your PC, and a generic tweak cannot resolve every title-specific issue. Test the documented renderer or settings for that game and keep your emulator and graphics driver within the versions supported by your system. If the entry identifies a known issue, changing unrelated settings is unlikely to remove it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The controller works in menus but a feature is missing
Check whether the game needs motion controls or pressure-sensitive buttons. Some controller setup approaches support ordinary buttons but not those PS3-specific inputs. Select a different supported handler or controller method only after confirming that it works with your operating system and RPCS3. A successful basic button test does not prove that every specialized input is available.

What to keep updated
- The RPCS3 download page, for current builds, operating-system requirements, packages and checksum instructions.
- Your graphics driver, especially when a required renderer is missing.
- The official firmware file and RPCS3’s firmware installation, without replacing official software with modified files.
- The compatibility entry for each game, because test status and title notes can change.
- The controller guide, when you change hardware, operating systems or input handlers.
With those pieces in place, RPCS3 gives you a legitimate way to run supported PS3 game dumps on a PC while making the limits clear: firmware is separate from the emulator, game files must come from a source you are entitled to use, graphics settings depend on your driver, and playability must be judged one title at a time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is RPCS3 itself enough to play a PS3 game?
No. You need the RPCS3 application, official PS3 firmware installed through File → Install Firmware, and a game dump you are entitled to use. The emulator does not include firmware or games.
Where should I download RPCS3?
Use the project’s official download page. Choose the package for your operating system and follow its instructions. The page also publishes SHA checksums you can compare with your downloaded file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need the exact PS3UPDAT.PUP filename?
Use the official firmware package named PS3UPDAT.PUP. Do not rename an unrelated or modified file to make it appear to be firmware, and select the file itself in RPCS3 rather than only its containing folder.
Can I add an ISO directly to RPCS3?
The setup guidance mentions folder-based dumps and ISO images for owned discs. Use File → Add Games and the location appropriate for the supported format. For format-specific dumping details, follow the current RPCS3 documentation.
Is Vulkan mandatory?
The setup guide recommends Vulkan and states that the graphics driver should support Vulkan 1.2, but RPCS3 can only use renderers exposed by your installation. If Vulkan is absent, use another listed renderer and check the game’s compatibility notes.
Does a Playable compatibility status guarantee smooth performance?
No. Playable means the game can be completed with playable performance and no game-breaking glitches according to the database definition. Results still depend on your PC, driver, RPCS3 build, renderer and controller setup.
Why do ordinary buttons work while motion or pressure input does not?
Some RPCS3 controller approaches do not support motion controls or pressure-sensitive buttons. Check the game’s input requirements and choose a controller and handler that expose the needed features on your operating system.
Should I change several RPCS3 settings at once when troubleshooting?
No. Start with the exact game’s compatibility notes, then change one renderer or documented setting at a time. This makes it possible to identify which change affected the result.
The Bottom Line
Install RPCS3 from its official download page, add Sony’s official PS3 firmware, import only game dumps you are entitled to use, choose a renderer your driver exposes, and configure a controller that supports the game’s required inputs. Then check the exact title in the live compatibility database before tuning. RPCS3 setup is straightforward, but no single renderer, controller or performance setting works for every PS3 game.
