Install Monit from your Linux distribution’s package repository whenever a suitable package is available, then configure its monitrc control file, validate it with sudo monit -t, and run the daemon through systemd. A reliable setup identifies each service with a PID file, uses explicit executable start and stop commands, tests a meaningful health condition, and chooses recovery thresholds that will not create a restart loop.
This guide covers package and source installation, the control-file layout, process and resource checks, polling behavior, systemd startup, security, and the failure modes most often encountered on production servers.
What Monit does and how its control loop works
Monit is a small service supervisor and monitoring daemon for Unix-like systems. It can watch a process, file, directory, filesystem, host, network protocol, or system resource and then perform an action when a condition is met. Actions can send an alert, restart a service, or run a custom program.
Monit’s behavior is defined in a control file named monitrc. A running daemon reads that file, checks the configured objects, sleeps for the interval set by set daemon, and repeats. For example, set daemon 60 schedules a normal pass every 60 seconds. If no daemon interval is configured (and Monit is not started with the -d option), Monit can perform one pass and exit, which is useful for testing but not for continuous supervision.

The order matters: install the program, locate and secure the control file, add a minimal configuration, run the syntax check, start Monit, inspect its status and logs, and only then add more checks. This isolates a configuration error from a service failure.
Choose an installation method
| Method | Best use | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distribution package | Most servers and normal production use | Integrates with the package database, service manager, paths, permissions, and security updates supplied by the distribution | The repository version can be older than the upstream release, and package layouts differ between distributions |
| Source build | A required feature or version is unavailable in the repository package | Lets you select the Monit release and build options | You must maintain the installation, service unit, configuration paths, and future updates yourself |
| Prebuilt binary | A supported binary is available for the exact operating system and architecture | Avoids compilation while providing a version not present in the distribution repository | Installation paths and service integration may not match the distribution conventions |
Check the candidate version before installing. Repository names, package versions, and unit-file locations can change with the operating-system release. Prefer the package supplied for the server’s exact release unless you have a specific reason to maintain Monit separately.
Install Monit from a Linux package
Debian and Ubuntu
On Debian or Ubuntu, refresh the package index and install the package named monit:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install monit
The official installation documentation also lists the equivalent Debian-family command through Aptitude:
sudo aptitude install monit
Inspect the candidate before accepting the installation when version selection matters:
apt-cache policy monit
The package normally supplies a systemd unit and a distribution-specific configuration directory. Do not assume that an include directory shown in a guide for another release exists on this machine; inspect the installed package and its unit file after installation.

The documented Fedora path uses Yum:
sudo yum install monit
On releases where Yum is a compatibility command for DNF, the package manager may display a different candidate version or repository. Confirm the candidate shown by the manager before proceeding. The package name remains monit on the common Fedora repositories.
OpenSUSE, Arch, Gentoo, and FreeBSD
The official installation guide provides package paths for OpenSUSE, Arch, Gentoo, and FreeBSD. Use the native package manager for the installed release and verify that it offers a package called monit (Gentoo may expose it under a category-qualified atom). Package versions and the supplied unit or startup script are release-specific, so read the package’s post-installation notes and inspect where it placed monitrc before editing it.

Build from source when the package is unsuitable
Use a source build only when the distribution package lacks a required version or feature, or when you have a controlled build and update process. Download a Monit source release appropriate for the server, unpack it, and run the standard configure and make sequence:
./configure
make
sudo make install
The exact installation prefix and resulting paths depend on the configure options and the account used for installation. A source install does not automatically provide the distribution’s systemd unit, log integration, default include directory, or package-managed upgrades. Create or adapt a unit deliberately, record the installed paths, and make sure the account that starts Monit can read the control file and execute every action program.

Monit searches for a control file named monitrc. The manual documents this search order as the user’s ~/.monitrc, then /etc/monitrc, followed by other compiled-in or local locations. Use -c when you need an unambiguous path:
sudo monit -c /etc/monitrc -t
Package layouts often use an additional directory such as /etc/monit/conf.d or /etc/monit/conf-enabled. The name is not universal. Check the package’s default unit, documentation, and existing files, then use the include path that actually exists on the target server.
Keep credentials and command details private. Make the file owned by root and readable only by root or the administrator who must maintain it:
sudo chown root:root /etc/monitrc
sudo chmod 600 /etc/monitrc
If a package deliberately uses a different owner or group, preserve that package design while still preventing untrusted users from reading secrets. Include files need the same review; a secure main file does not protect a world-readable file that it includes.
Create a minimal working configuration
Start with the smallest configuration that proves the daemon can run and load its include directory:
set daemon 60
set logfile syslog
include /etc/monit/conf.d/*
set daemon 60gives Monit a 60-second recurring poll interval.set logfile syslogsends Monit’s own messages to the system logging facility. A package may choose another default; keep one logging destination that you can inspect.includeloads separate service definitions. Replace the example directory with the path supplied by the installed package.
Keeping service rules in separate files makes it possible to enable one check at a time and identify which file introduced a syntax or behavior problem. Avoid copying a complete configuration from another distribution without checking every path, user, PID-file location, and include directory.

Validate syntax before starting the daemon
Run the built-in syntax test after every edit and before enabling Monit:
sudo monit -t
On success, Monit reports Control file syntax OK. If it reports an error, use the indicated line number, check quotation marks and directive spelling, and confirm that every referenced file and directory exists. Do not start or enable the service until the test succeeds; a daemon that cannot parse its control file cannot apply the recovery rules you expect.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

When the configuration is not in the default location, test the same path that the service unit will use:
sudo monit -c /path/to/monitrc -t
After a successful test, run a foreground or one-shot check only when you need diagnostic output. The normal systemd unit starts Monit with the options supplied by the distribution, so the path and privileges used in testing should match that unit.
Add a process check that can recover safely
Identify the process reliably
A process rule normally uses a PID file and then defines how Monit should start and stop the service. Replace every example path and name with values from the target server:
check process myapp with pidfile /run/myapp.pid
start program = "/usr/bin/systemctl start myapp"
stop program = "/usr/bin/systemctl stop myapp"
if failed host 127.0.0.1 port 8080 protocol http
then restart
The PID file must be the one actually written by the service. Verify it after starting the application manually and confirm that its contents identify the intended process. A stale, missing, or shared PID file can cause Monit to supervise the wrong process or report a healthy service as absent.
Use explicit action programs
Use absolute paths for executables where practical. If you call a script, begin it with a valid shebang such as #!/bin/sh and mark it executable. Test the exact command as the same user and environment that the Monit service uses; a command that works in an interactive shell may fail because its PATH, working directory, or permissions differ.
The example’s HTTP probe checks that something answers on loopback address 127.0.0.1, TCP port 8080, using the HTTP protocol. A listening socket alone may not prove that the application is ready, so choose a URL or protocol test that represents real readiness when the service supports one.

Set realistic timeouts
The Debian manual documents a default 30-second wait for process start and stop actions. A service that needs a different period should specify WITH TIMEOUT on the relevant action. Set the value from measured startup and shutdown behavior rather than making it arbitrarily large; an excessive timeout delays detection of a genuinely stuck process.
Test start and stop outside Monit first. Confirm that the command returns a meaningful exit status, waits for the service to finish transitioning, and does not leave child processes or stale PID files behind.
Monitor more than processes
Monit supports several classes of checks. Select the target that answers the operational question instead of adding every available test.
| Target | What it can establish | Typical response |
|---|---|---|
| Process | A named process exists, has the expected PID file, and responds to a health test | Alert or restart after a defined failure condition |
| File or directory | A path exists, has expected permissions or content conditions, or changes as required | Alert, execute a corrective program, or restart a dependent service |
| Filesystem | Mount availability or resource conditions such as capacity thresholds | Alert before exhaustion; avoid automatic destructive actions |
| Host or network protocol | A remote or local endpoint answers using the selected protocol | Alert or restart the local client/service that depends on it |
| System resource | Resource conditions such as load or memory pressure | Alert first; use restart only when the condition unambiguously identifies a failed service |
Each check should have a clear failure definition and an owner. A filesystem filling slowly is usually an alerting problem, not a reason to restart a database. Conversely, a process with a dead HTTP endpoint may need a restart if the endpoint is the service’s actual readiness signal.
Design polling and recovery rules to avoid loops
Monit evaluates conditions at the interval set by set daemon. A short interval detects failures quickly but increases command executions and can react to transient conditions. A longer interval reduces overhead and false positives but delays recovery. Choose an interval that fits the service’s failure impact and normal startup time.
Keep each recovery rule narrow. First establish process identity, then test health, then choose the least disruptive action:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Action | Use when | Risk to control |
|---|---|---|
alert |
The condition needs human investigation or is not safe to fix automatically | Alert fatigue if thresholds are too sensitive |
restart |
The service is clearly unhealthy and a restart is a known-safe recovery | Repeated restarts can hide a configuration error or cause an outage |
| Custom program | Recovery requires a controlled script or an external orchestration step | Scripts can have unexpected side effects or privilege requirements |
Use cycle thresholds when a condition can be temporary. Monit supports scheduling expressions such as EVERY ... CYCLES; use them to require repeated failures before acting. Make the threshold and the poll interval agree with the service’s real startup time. If a restart takes two minutes but Monit checks every 10 seconds, an immediate second restart can occur before the application has had a chance to become ready.
Enable and start Monit with systemd
For a package installation that supplies a systemd unit, enable the service for future boots and start it now:

sudo systemctl enable monit.service
sudo systemctl start monit.service
sudo systemctl status monit.service
The official systemd template orders startup after network-online.target, runs Monit with monit -I, and maps systemd reload and stop operations to monit reload and monit quit. A Debian-sourced unit follows the same general structure and installs into the normal multi-user target. Read the unit installed on your server rather than assuming every distribution uses identical paths or options.
Check that systemd considers the unit enabled:
systemctl is-enabled monit
If you built Monit from source, create a unit that points to the source-installed binary and the intended control-file path. Ensure the unit starts only after the prerequisites required by your checks, runs with the intended privileges, and has explicit reload and stop behavior. Do not mix a source-built binary with a package unit until you have verified both paths.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReload changes and confirm actual operation
After editing monitrc or an included rule, validate first and then reload the running daemon:
sudo monit -t
sudo systemctl reload monit
sudo monit status
A reload applies the new configuration without stopping the Monit daemon. monit status contacts the running client interface and reports the monitored objects and their current state. If the client cannot connect, inspect the unit state and logs before changing service rules.
The default local control endpoint documented by the manual is 127.0.0.1:2812. Monit also includes a lightweight HTTP(S) status interface. Keep that interface bound to a trusted address when possible. If remote access is required, enforce authentication and a firewall policy appropriate to the server; never expose an unauthenticated management endpoint to an untrusted network.
Inspect the system journal and the log destination selected by set logfile. Look for syntax errors, permission failures, unsuccessful action commands, and repeated state changes. Confirm the expected behavior by stopping a non-critical test service and observing whether Monit detects the failure, waits for the configured condition, runs the action once, and records the result.
Recommended Free Tools
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
monit -t reports an error
- Read the reported line and the preceding directive; a missing quote or brace often makes the next line appear to be the problem.
- Check directive spelling and capitalization against the installed Monit manual.
- Verify that every included file exists, is readable by the account running the test, and contains valid Monit syntax.
- Run the test with
-cif the service unit uses a non-default control-file path.
The service never starts
- Confirm that the PID-file path is correct and that the service actually creates it.
- Run the start command manually with its absolute path and inspect its exit status.
- Check executable permissions, ownership, required directories, and the user identity used by systemd.
- Make sure the command does not depend on an interactive shell, an unavailable environment variable, or a relative working directory.
Monit repeatedly restarts a healthy-looking service
- Run the same health test manually and compare it with the service’s real readiness condition.
- Increase the action timeout when startup or shutdown legitimately takes longer than the documented 30-second default.
- Use a cycle threshold for transient failures and ensure the poll interval allows the service to finish starting.
- Check for a stale PID file, a process that forks into a different PID, or a probe aimed at the wrong port or protocol.
Monit is not running after a reboot
- Run
systemctl is-enabled monitand enable the unit if it is disabled. - Run
systemctl status monitto see whether the unit failed during boot. - Read the system journal for the exact command, path, permission, or dependency error.
- Confirm that the unit’s control-file path still exists and that any network-dependent checks are ordered after the required network target.
Checks appear late or out of phase
Review set daemon and any EVERY ... CYCLES expressions. A 60-second daemon interval cannot provide second-level detection, and a multi-cycle condition intentionally delays action until the required number of passes has failed. Distinguish a scheduling delay from a failed check by comparing timestamps in the Monit and system logs.
Operational comparison: the decisions that affect maintenance
| Decision | Lower-maintenance choice | When the alternative is justified |
|---|---|---|
| Package or source | Distribution package with its supplied unit and paths | Source or a prebuilt binary when the repository version or features do not meet a documented requirement |
| systemd or another init system | systemd on distributions that provide it, because enable, start, status, reload, and journal workflows are integrated | The platform uses another init system or a source deployment requires a deliberately managed custom supervisor |
| Process, endpoint, or resource check | Check the process identity plus the endpoint that represents readiness | Add filesystem, host, protocol, or resource checks when they answer a separate operational question |
| Alert, restart, or custom action | Alert unless automatic recovery is proven safe and repeatable | Restart a clearly failed service or run a narrowly scoped program with tested permissions and side effects |
Production checklist
- Install the package matching the server’s distribution and verify its candidate version.
- If building from source, record the prefix, binary path, control-file path, and service-unit ownership.
- Locate the active
monitrcand include directory instead of assuming a path from another release. - Restrict ownership and read permissions because the file may contain credentials or privileged commands.
- Set a deliberate daemon interval and logging destination.
- Add one service rule with a verified PID file and absolute start and stop programs.
- Use a health condition that measures readiness, not merely a process name or open socket.
- Set
WITH TIMEOUTwhen the service’s transition time differs from the documented 30-second default. - Run
sudo monit -tand resolve every error before enabling the unit. - Enable and start Monit with systemd, then inspect
systemctl status, monit status, and the relevant logs. - Reload only after validating edits, and test recovery on a non-critical service before applying the rule broadly.
- Keep the local control and HTTP(S) interfaces restricted with authentication and firewall rules appropriate to the server.
With those controls in place, Monit remains simple to operate: a predictable polling loop, explicit checks, and recovery actions that are tied to evidence of failure rather than to an overly broad “restart everything” policy.
