Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
MediaWiki runs on a server stack, not as a desktop application. A working VPS installation needs a supported Linux distribution, a web server, PHP with the extensions required by your MediaWiki release, a MariaDB or MySQL database, shell access, and a way to maintain the system after launch.
On Debian or Ubuntu, the practical path is to secure a fresh VPS, install Apache, PHP and MariaDB from the distribution packages, create a separate database account, run MediaWiki’s browser installer, and then protect LocalSettings.php, enable HTTPS, test uploads and edits, and establish backups. The exact PHP and database versions must be checked against the MediaWiki release you intend to deploy.

MediaWiki requirements change with each release. The current MediaWiki.org requirements page, accessed 2026-10-15, lists PHP 8.3.0 as the minimum for the latest stable release. It also requires extensions that provide calendar, ctype, DOM, file information, iconv, JSON, OpenSSL, sodium, XML and XMLReader support. intl and mbstring are required, while APCu and cURL are recommended.
The same requirements page lists MariaDB 10.3.0 or newer, or MySQL 5.7.0 or newer, for the latest stable line. The upstream INSTALL file for the current development branch states a MariaDB 10.11-or-higher baseline. That branch-specific statement is stricter than the general stable-release page, so check the requirements belonging to the exact MediaWiki archive before selecting an operating-system image or database package.

| Component | Requirement or recommendation | What to verify on the VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Supported Debian or Ubuntu release with security updates available | Confirm the image is still maintained and that its package repositories provide a compatible PHP version. |
| Web server | Apache or another server able to invoke the compatible PHP version | Confirm PHP is connected through the server method you plan to use and that rewrite rules can be configured if you want short URLs. |
| PHP | PHP 8.3.0 minimum for the latest stable release as of 2026-10-15 | Run php -v and compare the result with the release requirements. |
| PHP extensions | Required core extensions plus intl and mbstring; APCu and cURL recommended |
Run php -m and check every extension required by the selected release. |
| Database | MariaDB 10.3.0+ or MySQL 5.7.0+ on the current stable requirements page; MariaDB 10.11+ for the current branch INSTALL baseline |
Run the database client’s version command and use the stricter branch requirement when it applies. |
| Access | SSH or equivalent shell access, administrative privileges during setup, and a web-accessible hostname or IP address | Test SSH before beginning and reserve ports for SSH, HTTP and HTTPS. |
If the distribution offers an older PHP or MariaDB package than the release requires, do not work around the mismatch by forcing random third-party packages. Choose a newer supported operating-system image, a different MediaWiki release, or a repository that you can maintain and audit.
Choose the VPS operating model
An unmanaged VPS gives you shell access and control over Apache, PHP, the database, firewall rules, updates and backups. It also makes you responsible for every one of those tasks. A managed VPS may handle some patching, snapshots or monitoring, but the provider’s exact scope varies. Confirm who performs operating-system updates, database maintenance, backup retention and recovery testing before treating a service as managed.
For a first installation, select a current Debian or Ubuntu image, a routable IPv4 or IPv6 address, enough disk space for the operating system, database and uploaded files, and a hostname that you can point at the server. MediaWiki’s software requirements do not establish a universal CPU, RAM or storage size; traffic, extensions, search indexing, image volume and concurrent editors determine those values. Start with a plan that leaves room for the database and the images directory, then monitor memory, storage and response times rather than relying on a nominal plan size.
Prepare and secure Debian or Ubuntu
- Log in with the provider’s initial account. Use SSH keys where the provider supports them. Avoid doing routine work as
root. - Create a named administrator with sudo access. Test a second SSH session with that account before restricting the initial account, so a mistake does not lock you out.
- Apply updates before installing the wiki. Run
sudo apt-get update, followed bysudo apt-get upgrade, and reboot if the package manager installs a new kernel or other component that requires it. - Set the server’s time zone and hostname. Consistent time makes log correlation, certificate checks and scheduled backups easier.
- Limit network exposure. Allow SSH only from networks you can administer when practical, and allow HTTP (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443) for the site. If you use UFW, the intent is represented by commands such as
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH,sudo ufw allow 80/tcpandsudo ufw allow 443/tcp; check the resulting rules before enabling the firewall.
Do not expose the database port to the public internet for a normal single-server installation. MediaWiki and MariaDB can communicate over the local host, while remote database access adds a separate authentication and firewall surface.
Install Apache, PHP and MariaDB
The Debian/Ubuntu package family given by the MediaWiki requirements documentation is:
sudo apt-get install apache2 mariadb-server php php-intl php-mbstring php-apcu php-curl php-mysql php-xml
This command installs Apache, MariaDB, PHP and the extensions named in the documented package set. A distribution may split additional functionality into separate packages, and an extension that is built into PHP may not appear as a separately named package. Compare the resulting module list with the requirements for your exact MediaWiki release rather than assuming the package command is sufficient forever.
- Enable the services at boot and start them now with
sudo systemctl enable --now apache2andsudo systemctl enable --now mariadb. - Check service state with
sudo systemctl status apache2andsudo systemctl status mariadb. A failed service must be fixed before you proceed. - Confirm the PHP interpreter with
php -v. - List loaded modules with
php -m. Check forintl, mbstring, mysqlior the PDO MySQL driver supplied by the package, xml, dom, fileinfo, openssl, sodium, xmlreaderand the other modules required by the release. - Open the server’s address in a browser. The default Apache page confirms that the web server is reachable before MediaWiki is added.
Apache is a straightforward default when you want package-supported PHP integration and familiar per-directory configuration. Nginx is also suitable, but PHP is normally connected through PHP-FPM and rewrite rules are expressed differently. Choose the server your team can patch, monitor and troubleshoot; changing web servers after the wiki is populated creates avoidable configuration work.

Download and place the MediaWiki release
Use the official MediaWiki archive for the release you selected. Record the version, download it over a trusted connection, and verify the published checksum when one is provided. Do not silently substitute an unofficial repackaged archive.
Extract the archive into an application directory served by Apache, such as a dedicated directory below /var/www. Keep the extracted directory separate from unrelated sites so its ownership, virtual-host configuration and backups are easy to identify. A shell sequence that avoids guessing the archive name is:
sudo mkdir -p /var/www/mediawiki
tar -xzf "$(ls mediawiki-*.tar.gz | head -n1)"
ls -la
sudo cp -a mediawiki-*/. /var/www/mediawiki/
Use the actual archive you verified; the wildcard command is only a convenient way to select a single downloaded MediaWiki archive in a clean working directory. If more than one archive is present, remove ambiguity by naming the intended file explicitly.
Recommended Free Tools
Configure Apache’s site or virtual host to use the MediaWiki directory as its document root. Keep the default site disabled or use a separate hostname when the VPS hosts more than one application. Test the configuration with Apache’s configuration-test command before reloading the service. The web server must be able to read the application files, but it should not grant write access to the whole code tree.
Create a dedicated database and account
MediaWiki should not connect as the MariaDB or MySQL administrative account. Create a database and a user used only by this wiki. The following example uses the local database server, a database named mediawiki, and an account named mediawiki_app; choose a long, unique password and store it in your password manager.
sudo mariadb
CREATE DATABASE mediawiki CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'mediawiki_app'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'use-a-long-unique-password-here';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mediawiki.* TO 'mediawiki_app'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;
The account is limited to the one database and to local connections. If your database server uses a different host name or authentication policy, enter the values that the installer and server configuration actually require. Do not copy the example password into production, and do not commit database credentials to a source-control repository.
For MySQL instead of MariaDB, perform the equivalent database and user creation with the administrative client supplied by that server. Confirm that the selected server version is supported by the MediaWiki release; the current branch’s MariaDB 10.11 requirement is not automatically a requirement for every stable release, but it must be honored when deploying that branch.

Run the MediaWiki browser installer
- Point a browser at the hostname or IP address serving the extracted MediaWiki directory. Apache should route the request to MediaWiki rather than its default welcome page.
- Follow the installer’s language and environment checks. Resolve every reported missing PHP extension or writable-directory problem before continuing.
- Enter the site name, project language, administrator account and password. Use a unique administrator password and do not reuse the VPS or database password.
- Choose MariaDB or MySQL as the database type, then enter the database host, database name, database user and database password created for this wiki. A local installation commonly uses
localhostas the database host. - Review the installer’s options for email, user registration, caching and the selected license or project settings. These choices can be adjusted later in configuration, but verify them now so the initial site is not accidentally open to unwanted registrations.
- Complete the installation and download the generated
LocalSettings.phpwhen prompted. The MediaWiki Debian/Ubuntu guide describes saving this file to the parent directory of the new wiki. In a conventional single-site document root, follow the path shown by the installer and place the file where the running MediaWiki code expects it, normally alongside the application entry point rather than in a publicly downloadable upload directory. - Return to the site and confirm that the installer has been replaced by the wiki’s main page. If the browser still shows the installer, the file was saved in the wrong directory or Apache is serving a different document root.
LocalSettings.php contains the database credentials and the site’s operational settings. Treat it as a secret-bearing configuration file: keep a protected copy for recovery, exclude it from public downloads and source-control repositories, and make changes one at a time with a backup before each change.
Set ownership and permissions
The web-server account must be able to read MediaWiki’s application and configuration files. It should not have unrestricted write access to the code directory. Uploaded files belong in the MediaWiki images directory, whose write permissions should be deliberately configured if uploads are enabled.
Use the account and group names supplied by your distribution, inspect the resulting permissions with ls -la, and avoid applying a blanket chmod 777. A permissive mode can let another local process alter PHP code or read credentials. If the installer reports that it cannot write a required directory, grant only the narrow write access needed for that operation, then remove temporary write access where the deployment design allows.
After changing ownership or permissions, test both an anonymous page view and an authenticated edit. A page that loads but cannot save changes often indicates database credentials or database permissions; a page that fails before rendering commonly indicates PHP, Apache or file-access errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Configure the wiki after installation
Site identity and language
Use LocalSettings.php for the site name, language, timezone, contact details and other identity settings. Make a dated backup before edits and syntax-check the file after each change. A missing semicolon or an accidental quote can turn a small configuration edit into a server error.
Uploads and image processing
Uploads are a policy decision as well as a technical setting. Decide who may upload, which file types are allowed, maximum file sizes, licensing expectations and retention. Enable uploads only after testing the images directory and installing any image-processing dependencies required for thumbnails. Upload one allowed file, confirm that its thumbnail renders, and test that a disallowed type is rejected. Do not treat a successful upload of an arbitrary executable as acceptable; the upload policy must prevent scripts from being executed as web applications.
Email and account recovery
Configure outbound email if users need password resets, notifications or account-confirmation messages. Use a reliable mail relay, protect its credentials, and send a test message. If email is not configured, tell administrators how account recovery will be handled rather than assuming the built-in messages can be delivered.

Caching and extensions
APCu is recommended by the current requirements page and can reduce repeated PHP work when configured correctly. Add extensions only from sources you can maintain, and read the extension’s compatibility notes for the exact MediaWiki release. Keep a record of every extension and its version so upgrades can be planned instead of discovered through a broken production site.
Short URLs
Short URLs require web-server rewrite rules in addition to MediaWiki settings. Follow the short-URL guidance associated with your MediaWiki release and Apache or Nginx layout. Change one rule at a time, reload the server after a configuration test, and verify that the main page, a normal article, a file description page and the login page all work without redirect loops or 404 errors.
Enable HTTPS and harden administration
Install a trusted TLS certificate for the hostname users will visit, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, and confirm that login and edit requests remain on HTTPS. Test the certificate renewal process before its first expiration; an installed certificate is not a maintenance plan.
- Keep SSH key authentication available and restrict administrative access by firewall rules where practical.
- Use separate, strong passwords for the VPS administrator, MediaWiki administrators and database account.
- Apply operating-system, PHP, web-server, database and MediaWiki security updates on a defined schedule.
- Review Apache, PHP and MariaDB logs after installation and after every major configuration change.
- Limit account registration, file uploads and administrator rights to the audience your project actually needs.
- Do not expose database credentials, private keys or backup archives through the web root.
These controls are deployment recommendations rather than a promise that one configuration fits every organization. A wiki containing confidential information may require network segmentation, centralized logging, vulnerability management and an incident-response plan beyond the basic VPS setup.

Verify the finished installation
Run these checks before inviting users:
- Open the main page over HTTPS and confirm that Apache and PHP report no errors.
- Create and edit a test page, log out, and log back in with the administrator account.
- Restart Apache and MariaDB, then confirm that the wiki can still read pages and save a new edit.
- Check that the database user can perform normal wiki operations without being the database superuser.
- If uploads are enabled, upload an allowed file, generate its thumbnail and verify that the policy rejects an unapproved type.
- Test any short-URL rules on article, login, history and file pages.
- Inspect disk usage, especially the database directory, application directory and
imagesdirectory. - Confirm that backups complete and that at least one restoration has been rehearsed on a separate location.
Back up, update and maintain MediaWiki
A usable backup contains more than the database. Preserve the database, LocalSettings.php, the images directory and any customized extensions, skins or web-server configuration. A database dump without uploaded files cannot restore the actual wiki; a copy of images without the database loses page history and account data.
Schedule database dumps, copy them away from the VPS, encrypt them where appropriate and set a retention policy. Monitor available disk space and test restoration at intervals. Snapshots are useful for rapid rollback, but they should supplement application-aware database backups rather than replace them.
Before a MediaWiki upgrade, read the target release requirements, back up the components above, record installed extensions and skins, and test the upgrade on a disposable copy when the wiki is important. Run the maintenance and update scripts documented for the release from the command line, then inspect the web-server and PHP logs. Upgrade the database and operating system on their own schedule when possible so a failure has a clear cause.

Apache, Nginx, MariaDB and MySQL: practical choices
| Decision | Choose one option when | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apache | Your administrators know Apache modules, per-site configuration and its PHP integration. | Rewrite and directory rules are familiar, but you still need to keep the server and PHP integration patched. |
| Nginx | Your existing platform uses Nginx and PHP-FPM and your team already operates that combination. | Rewrite configuration and PHP-FPM troubleshooting differ from Apache; copy a MediaWiki rule set appropriate to your release. |
| MariaDB | The selected MediaWiki release supports the MariaDB version supplied by your distribution and your team has MariaDB tooling. | Check the exact release requirement, especially the current branch’s MariaDB 10.11-or-higher baseline. |
| MySQL | Your organization standardizes on MySQL and the selected MediaWiki release lists your MySQL version as supported. | Package availability, backup tooling and operational procedures may differ from MariaDB. |
| Managed VPS | You want a provider to handle some patching, monitoring or backups and the contract clearly defines those duties. | Less operational control can mean less shell or database access; verify recovery and update responsibilities. |
| Unmanaged VPS | You need full control and have the skills and time to maintain the stack. | You own security updates, monitoring, backups, incident response and every service failure. |
Troubleshoot common installation failures
The installer says PHP is too old or an extension is missing
Run php -v and php -m in the shell, then compare them with the requirements for the exact release. Installing a command-line module does not help if Apache invokes a different PHP version. Check the PHP version used by the web server, install the matching module package, reload Apache or PHP-FPM, and repeat the installer check.

The request is reaching Apache but not the MediaWiki virtual host or document root. Check the hostname’s DNS record, enabled sites, document-root path and file permissions. Confirm the extracted files are actually under the directory Apache serves, then run Apache’s configuration test before reloading it.
MediaWiki cannot connect to the database
Recheck the database host, database name, username and password in the installer or LocalSettings.php. Confirm that the account was created with the correct host restriction, such as localhost, and that the database service is running. Test the account from the VPS with the database client rather than opening the database port publicly.
The wiki displays a PHP 500 error after editing LocalSettings.php
Restore the last known-good copy, inspect the Apache and PHP error logs, and review the most recent syntax change. Add settings one at a time. Do not expose detailed PHP errors to public visitors while troubleshooting a production wiki.
Uploads fail or thumbnails are missing
Check the upload policy, the images directory ownership and free disk space. A successful original upload does not prove that thumbnail generation is configured; install and verify the image-processing dependencies required by your release, then test a small allowed image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort URLs return 404 or redirect repeatedly
Check that the web-server rewrite rules match the actual MediaWiki directory and URL path. Verify the corresponding settings in LocalSettings.php, test the server configuration, reload it, and check a normal article and login URL separately.
Where the installation leaves you
Once the compatibility check, package installation, database setup and browser installer are complete, MediaWiki is running but not finished operationally. The production-ready state is the one in which LocalSettings.php is protected, HTTPS is enforced, permissions are narrow, uploads and rewrites have been tested, updates are scheduled, logs are reviewed and a tested backup can restore the database, configuration and files together.
