FFTARecomp 2.0 turns the USA version of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance into a native Windows, Linux or Steam Deck program. To install it, download the release for your platform, provide your own legally obtained USA ROM, run the recompiler, and then configure controls, display and audio from the in-game Options Menu. The project does not distribute the ROM or other copyrighted game data, and its documentation says a Nintendo console BIOS dump is not required.
What FFTARecomp 2.0 actually installs
FFTARecomp is an unofficial native recompilation rather than a conventional emulator. The program converts the game code from a ROM you supply into a platform-native executable, so the installed game runs as a Windows, Linux or Steam Deck application instead of interpreting the ROM through an emulation layer each time it starts.
Version 2.0 adds several features that matter during setup and everyday play:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A redesigned menu interface.
- Zoom-in and zoom-out controls.
- Native Linux support and a Steam Deck workflow.
- Generic XInput gamepad support.
- Widescreen fixes and presets extending to 32:9.
- A Normal fast-forward audio mode that leaves audio at ordinary speed while gameplay runs faster.
This is a fan project, not an official release. It does not supply the game, a ROM, or copyrighted game assets. You must obtain the USA game data yourself and use it only in accordance with the law where you live.

What you need before starting
A compatible USA ROM
The installer expects the USA release of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. A related recompilation repository identifies the supported USA AFXE revision with SHA-1 4ac05441f4de70a4ec3dd932116346c61b8783d9 and a file size of 16,777,216 bytes. Those values are compatibility checks, not a download source. If your file has a different hash or size, it may be a different regional or revision build and may not work with this port.
A supported computer or handheld
- Windows: use the project’s
FFTARecomp-windows-x86_64.ziprelease archive on a 64-bit Windows installation. - Linux: use
FFTARecomp-linux-x86_64.tar.gzon a compatible 64-bit Linux system. - Steam Deck: install from Desktop Mode using the Linux archive.
No minimum CPU, GPU or RAM specification is published in the project material. The first installation does compile locally, however, so allow several minutes and expect temporarily higher CPU and memory use.
Optional hardware
A keyboard is enough to begin. A USB or wireless controller that presents itself as a standard XInput gamepad is the clearest physical-controller fit because XInput support is built into version 2.0.
BIOS requirement
The project documentation says no Nintendo BIOS dump is needed. A related recompilation repository includes a clean-room emibios replacement, allowing the port to operate without a console BIOS file.
Install FFTARecomp 2.0 on Windows
Windows installation is a release-archive extraction followed by the included graphical installer. Keep the ROM in a location you can browse to easily, but do not place a ROM or copyrighted game data in a public download directory.
- Download the Windows archive. Obtain
FFTARecomp-windows-x86_64.zipfrom the project’s Releases page. - Extract the archive. Use Windows Explorer or an archive utility to extract the complete folder. Do not try to run the executable while it is still inside the compressed archive.
- Start the installer. Open the extracted folder and run
FFTARecomp.exe. - Select your ROM. When prompted, browse to your own USA ROM file. The program uses this file as the input for recompilation; it does not download game data.
- Choose Recompile & Install. Let all five installation steps finish. The first run builds the native game on your computer and can take several minutes.
- Launch the game. Press Play after the installer reports completion.
What to expect during the first Windows install
The installation directory is larger than the game alone because it contains a compiler toolchain used to build the native program. CPU and RAM usage can rise while the five stages run. That activity is expected; do not close the installer merely because the system becomes busier for a few minutes.

SmartScreen and antivirus warnings
The distributed executables are not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen or antivirus software may therefore display a warning even when the archive has not been altered. The project README suggests choosing More info > Run anyway when you have verified that you obtained the archive from the project’s release channel, or unblocking the downloaded archive in its file properties before extracting it. Treat that as a risk decision: inspect the file source and scan it with your security software rather than disabling protection globally. Each release also points to a VirusTotal report for additional checking.

The Linux package is a compressed tar archive. Open a terminal in the directory containing FFTARecomp-linux-x86_64.tar.gz and run:
mkdir -p FFTARecomp-linux
tar -xzf FFTARecomp-linux-x86_64.tar.gz -C FFTARecomp-linux
cd FFTARecomp-linux
./FFTAInstaller
The final command starts the project’s installer. Follow its prompts to select your legally obtained USA ROM and complete the local recompilation. If the shell reports a permission error, confirm that you are in the extracted directory and that the installer file is executable; launch it from that directory rather than from inside the archive.
Install on a Steam Deck
- Switch to Desktop Mode from the Steam Deck power menu.
- Download
FFTARecomp-linux-x86_64.tar.gz. - Extract it to a folder you can find from the desktop file manager.
- Open a terminal in that folder and run the same four commands shown in the Linux section, or start
FFTAInstallerfrom the file manager if it permits executable files to run. - When prompted, choose the USA ROM stored on the Deck and allow the local build to finish.
Desktop Mode is the documented installation path. After installation, return to Game Mode or launch the native executable from Desktop Mode, depending on how you prefer to organize non-Steam applications. The project does not publish a separate Deck-specific installer or a fixed hardware-performance target.
Confirm the first launch and open the Options Menu
Start the installed game and press Esc while it is running. This opens the Options Menu, where input, video and audio settings are grouped. Use this menu before beginning a long play session so that the aspect ratio, scaling and controller layout match your display and hardware.

If the game reaches its title or opening sequence, the recompilation completed successfully. A short delay while assets are prepared on the first run is distinct from the longer initial build performed by the installer.

To change a binding, open Esc > Options > Input, select the function, and press the replacement key. Remapping is useful if the default Z/X arrangement conflicts with another application or if you want a layout that resembles a modern gamepad.
Configure an XInput controller
Version 2.0 supports generic XInput gamepads rather than requiring one particular controller model. Its documented defaults are:

Fix a controller that is not detected on first launch
The README documents a first-launch detection issue: a gamepad may appear inactive until you open Options > Input and attempt to remap a button. Select a binding, press the desired controller button, and return to the game. According to the project documentation, the controller then activates on its own.
If that does not work, check the basics in this order:

- Confirm that the operating system sees it as an XInput device rather than a different input protocol.
- Open the Input screen and perform an actual remap instead of only viewing the current bindings.
- Disconnect other gamepads temporarily so the intended device is unambiguous.
Set widescreen, scaling and zoom
Open Esc > Options > Video. The port provides these aspect-ratio choices:
| Video option | Use |
|---|---|
| Auto | Lets the program choose a mode based on the window or display. |
| 16:10 | Suitable for many laptop and handheld panels. |
| 16:9 | Common desktop-monitor and television shape. |
| 20:9 | Very wide display or phone-like panel shape. |
| 21:9 | Ultrawide monitor shape. |
| 32:9 | Super-ultrawide shape; this is the widest documented preset. |
The same video menu exposes screen-model, grid, scaling and vertical-sync controls. Choose the aspect preset that matches the physical display first, then adjust scaling to control how large the game image appears. Enable or disable the screen model and grid effects according to whether you want a cleaner image or a presentation closer to a handheld screen. Vsync is available when you need to manage tearing.
Zoom is independent of the aspect-ratio preset. Use the keyboard + and - keys, or the mapped controller shoulder buttons, to change the game’s view while playing.
Configure audio and fast-forward
The Options Menu includes volume controls and three documented fast-forward audio modes:
| Mode | Audio behavior while fast-forwarding |
|---|---|
| Silent | Mutes audio during fast-forward. |
| Fast audio | Speeds audio up with the accelerated game. |
| Normal | Keeps audio at ordinary speed while gameplay advances faster. |
The release announcement describes fast-forward as reaching up to 8× speed. That is a project-documented maximum, not an independent performance measurement; the practical speed can vary with the scene and the computer.
Normal mode is useful when you want to skip repetitive movement without listening to a high-pitched soundtrack. Silent mode avoids distracting sound during long waits, while Fast audio preserves an audible indication that the game is still advancing.

Why installation temporarily uses so much CPU and RAM
FFTARecomp does not simply copy a prebuilt game. The first installation compiles the game locally, and the package includes the compiler toolchain needed for that job. Several minutes of elevated processor and memory use are therefore expected. The installed folder is also larger than the original game because the toolchain and build files occupy space.
Leave the installer open until all five stages complete. If the system becomes unresponsive, close other applications and retry; do not delete the partially created directory until you have recorded any error message. The project does not publish a minimum hardware specification, so there is no official CPU or RAM threshold against which to compare a failed build.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows blocks the executable | The files are not code-signed. | Verify the archive source, inspect the release’s VirusTotal report, then use More info > Run anyway or unblock the archive in its file properties if you accept the risk. |
| The installer rejects the game file | The ROM may be a different region or revision. | Check that it is the USA AFXE build and compare its SHA-1 and 16,777,216-byte size with the documented compatibility values. |
| Build appears slow | The first install is compiling locally. | Allow several minutes, keep the computer powered, and expect temporary CPU and RAM increases. |
| Sprites appear as silhouettes in the first level | A documented first-level issue. | Continue playing; the README says the silhouettes can last one to three seconds and then stop occurring. |
| Gamepad is connected but does nothing | First-launch input detection may not have activated. | Open Options > Input and remap one button. The documented workaround is to perform a binding change so the controller activates. |
| Linux installer will not start | The command was run from the wrong directory or the file lacks execute permission. | Change into the extracted folder, confirm that FFTAInstaller exists, and run ./FFTAInstaller. |
| Image looks stretched | The selected aspect preset does not match the display. | Open Options > Video and choose Auto or the preset matching the panel, then adjust scaling. |
Build from source instead of using a release archive
Most players should use the platform archive. Source compilation is for developers or users who need to build the project themselves. The official repository lists Rust and Windows PowerShell as requirements. Its build-all.ps1 script builds the workspace and installer and downloads w64devkit 2.10.0 when that toolchain is not already present.
Recommended Free Tools
A source build does not remove the ROM requirement: you still need a compatible USA game image as input, and the project still does not provide copyrighted game data. Because source builds involve a separate toolchain and more opportunities for environment-specific errors, use the published release unless you specifically need development access.
How this differs from running the game in an emulator
The important distinction is how the game code is executed:
| Consideration | FFTARecomp 2.0 | Traditional emulator |
|---|---|---|
| Execution model | Native recompilation into a platform program. | Emulates the original console hardware while running the ROM; exact behavior varies by emulator. |
| Game data | User supplies the USA ROM; the project does not distribute it. | Typically also requires a user-supplied ROM; requirements vary by emulator. |
| BIOS | Project documentation says a Nintendo BIOS dump is not required. | BIOS requirements vary by emulator and core. |
| Platforms documented here | Windows, Linux and Steam Deck. | Platform coverage depends on the emulator chosen. |
| Display controls | Built-in presets from Auto through 32:9, zoom, scaling, screen model, grid and vsync. | Controls and widescreen behavior vary by emulator. |
| Input | Remappable keyboard controls and generic XInput support. | Controller mapping depends on the emulator. |
| Setup effort | Extract an archive, select the ROM and wait for a local five-stage build. | Usually involves emulator installation and ROM configuration; exact steps vary. |
There is no independent benchmark in the project material comparing frame rate, latency, memory use or compatibility against emulators. Choose FFTARecomp for its native application model and integrated widescreen, zoom and input features, not because a published test proves it is faster.
Quick Recap
