There is no ordinary World of Warcraft addon that installs the complete Dark Souls combat system. The name usually refers to one of three different projects. WoW Souls is an unofficial, single-player prototype that runs through the open-source benilla client and reads local installations of World of Warcraft 1.12 and Dark Souls Remastered. Action Combat Mode is the currently distributed addon that changes WoW controls to an aiming-oriented action style. DarkSoulsSCT changes scrolling combat text only.
Choose the project that matches your goal before downloading anything. The prototype does not have a documented stable installer or retail Battle.net workflow, while Action Combat Mode has a normal addon installation path. The instructions below separate what is documented from what remains experimental as of October 2026.
Which “Dark Souls combat mod” do you mean?
Search results and community posts use similar names for projects with very different installation requirements. Installing the wrong one can leave you with altered combat text when you expected dodge mechanics, or with an experimental client when you only wanted mouse-and-keyboard action controls.

| Action Combat Mode | A distributed WoW addon that replaces traditional tab-targeting with aiming-oriented controls. | A compatible WoW flavor and the matching addon release installed through its CurseForge listing or app. | CurseForge listed version 5.0.3 and support for Retail, Forever, MoP Classic, Titan Reforged Classic, and Classic flavors on October 15, 2026. Listing details can change. |
| DarkSoulsSCT | A scrolling-combat-text addon anchored to nameplates. | A WoW installation compatible with its release. | CurseForge listed version 0.5 for Retail 10.0.2, uploaded January 15, 2023. It is a presentation layer, not a combat overhaul. |
For a genuine Dark Souls-style system—light and heavy attacks, rolls with invincibility frames, stamina costs, lock-on and corpse recovery—the only project in the supplied documentation is WoW Souls. For a conventional addon installation that makes WoW feel more like an action game, use Action Combat Mode.

What WoW Souls is—and why installation is different
Wccftech described WoW Souls as “a single player prototype that injects Dark Souls Remastered combat into an unofficial version of World of Warcraft.” That description matters: this is not a package copied into WoW’s InterfaceAddOns folder, and it is not documented as a retail client modification.
The prototype reads two local game installations. The World of Warcraft side is specifically version 1.12, not a current retail build. The other required game is Dark Souls Remastered. The project runs through benilla, an open-source client written in Rust and Bevy. The available report does not publish a verified installer, a supported launcher command, a complete first-run wizard, or a stable in-game options panel.
Requirements you can establish from the documentation
- A local installation of World of Warcraft 1.12.
- A local installation of Dark Souls Remastered.
- The unofficial
benillaclient used by the prototype. - A willingness to troubleshoot an early experimental project rather than a finished addon.
The documentation does not establish supported operating systems, exact folder names, a public release number, minimum hardware, controller requirements, or a retail-account login method. Do not assume that a current Battle.net installation can substitute for the 1.12 files, or that an addon manager can install the prototype.

Because no stable public installer or fixed launcher procedure is documented, the safest process is to treat every release or repository instruction as authoritative for that particular build. The following sequence explains the dependency order without inventing commands that the project has not published.
- Confirm that you have the correct game versions. Verify that the World of Warcraft files are version 1.12 and that Dark Souls Remastered is installed locally. A retail WoW directory alone does not meet the documented requirement.
- Obtain the prototype and its client from the project’s own release or repository page. Use the instructions shipped with that specific build. The October 14, 2026 report does not provide a universal download URL or installer, so there is no safe, version-independent command to copy here.
- Install or build
benillaas that release requires. The client is written in Rust and Bevy. The report identifies the technology but does not state whether a particular build is distributed as a ready-to-run binary or must be compiled. - Point the client at the two existing game installations only when the build asks for them. Use the project’s documented path selector or configuration file. Do not guess folder names, rename game data, or overwrite either installation.
- Launch the prototype through the client, not through the normal WoW launcher. A standard addon launch will not inject the reported combat system. If the build does not start, record the exact release, client version, paths and error text before changing files.
- Check that the prototype reaches its own game session. The documented target is a single-player experience. The available report does not describe retail realms, Battle.net authentication, or multiplayer servers.
What not to expect from WoW Souls
- There is no documented one-click installation process.
- There is no documented retail Battle.net compatibility.
- There is no documented multiplayer or persistent-realm setup.
- There is no documented, stable configuration screen covering every control.
- There is no basis for promising that every WoW class, quest, or current expansion works with the prototype.
If a download claims to be a finished retail addon, it is describing something other than the prototype covered by the October 14, 2026 report. Recheck the project’s own repository or release notes before following build-specific commands, because the public status of an experimental client can change quickly.

WoW Souls combat mechanics you should see in a working build
The reported prototype does more than place a new camera over ordinary tab-target combat. Its attack and movement behavior comes from Dark Souls Remastered data.
Attacks and stamina
- A light attack (R1 in the source terminology) chains three straight-sword moves.
- A heavy attack (R2) performs a heavy strike.
- Pressing light attack after a roll produces a rolling attack.
- Animations, attack timings, stamina costs and damage multipliers are taken from Dark Souls data.
Dodging, camera and lock-on
- The dodge uses a Dark Souls roll animation with invincibility frames.
- Roll movement uses root motion, so the character’s displacement follows the animation rather than a simple free-speed slide.
- The camera orbits around the character in a Souls-style view.
- Lock-on holds the target while the character strafes or backpedals.
- Successful hits briefly freeze the frame, providing the impact pause associated with Souls combat.
Death and recovery
Death leaves carried souls at the corpse. The reported recovery loop sends you back from the nearby Abbey to retrieve them, so dying is connected to a deliberate return run rather than an ordinary WoW resurrection-and-release cycle.
These mechanics describe the prototype reported in October 2026; they are not a promise that every subsequent build exposes identical timings, key bindings or content.
How to install Action Combat Mode as a normal WoW addon
If your goal is action-oriented aiming in a supported WoW installation, Action Combat Mode is the practical route. CurseForge listed version 5.0.3 on October 15, 2026 and showed support for Retail, Forever, MoP Classic, Titan Reforged Classic and Classic flavors. Select the release that matches the client you actually launch.
- Identify your WoW flavor. Decide whether you are playing Retail, Forever, MoP Classic, Titan Reforged Classic or another Classic flavor shown on the current listing. Addon compatibility is tied to the game flavor and its interface version.
- Open the Action Combat Mode listing in CurseForge or the CurseForge app. Confirm the current release number and supported flavor before installing. The listing is volatile; version 5.0.3 and the support matrix are the values reported on October 15, 2026, not a permanent guarantee.
- Install the matching release. Use the app’s install action or the listing’s normal manual-download instructions. The addon belongs in the selected WoW installation’s addon location; do not place it in the experimental
benillaclient directory. - Start the same WoW flavor you selected in step one. If you install a Retail build but launch a Classic client, the addon may be marked out of date or fail to load.
- Accept the first-login setup prompt. The addon can present an initial configuration prompt when you enter the game.
- If the prompt does not appear, open the options panel manually. Use Game Menu (ESC) > Options > AddOns > Action Combat Mode.
- Configure the controls exposed by your installed release. The listing describes options for aiming, targeting, camera behavior and other action-control preferences. Save or apply each change using the controls shown in that panel.
- Test in a safe area before entering group content. Confirm that your cursor or camera movement, target selection, movement keys and attack inputs behave as intended. If a setting is unavailable, it may belong to another flavor or a newer release rather than indicating a missing WoW feature.
Configuring Action Combat Mode without losing WoW’s normal controls
The addon’s purpose is to replace traditional tab-targeting with aiming-oriented controls, so configuration is primarily about deciding how much of that replacement you want active. Exact labels can change between releases; use the labels displayed in your installed options panel.
Aiming
Set the aiming behavior first. Decide how the addon should interpret camera or pointer movement when selecting an enemy. Make small changes and test against a single target so you can tell whether a miss came from aim, range or a spell’s normal WoW restrictions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTargeting
Review how targets are acquired and retained. Action-style targeting can feel different from pressing tab through nearby units. Check the target behavior after you move behind or beside an enemy, and verify that you can deliberately change targets before starting combat.
Camera
Adjust camera-oriented options only after aiming and targeting are understandable. A camera setting that feels comfortable while standing still may be awkward during strafing. Test orbiting, turning and backpedaling separately so you know which option changed the behavior.
Key bindings and conflicts
Keep a written note of any keys you change. If an action input stops working, inspect the addon’s options and WoW’s own key-binding screen for a duplicate assignment. Restore one change at a time instead of resetting every setting, which makes the conflicting control easier to identify.
Flavor and release alignment
When the addon stops loading after a game update, first compare the installed release with the current CurseForge entry and confirm the game flavor. CurseForge listed 5.0.3 on October 15, 2026, but addon version numbers, supported flavors and interface compatibility can change after that date.

What DarkSoulsSCT adds—and what it does not
DarkSoulsSCT is useful if you want a visual presentation closer to a Souls game while keeping ordinary WoW combat. CurseForge describes it as configurable scrolling combat text anchored to nameplates. Its latest listed file is version 0.5 for Retail 10.0.2, uploaded January 15, 2023.
Install it as a normal WoW addon using the release that matches the supported client. It changes combat-text presentation and stacking behavior. It does not add rolls, invincibility frames, lock-on, stamina costs, Dark Souls attack chains, root motion or corpse-based soul recovery. Installing it alongside Action Combat Mode therefore changes what damage numbers look like, not the underlying combat rules.
Choosing the right project
| Your goal | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play a single-player experiment that ports Dark Souls Remastered combat data into an unofficial WoW implementation. | WoW Souls | It is the only documented project here with Souls attack chains, rolls, stamina, lock-on, hit pauses and corpse recovery. |
| Use action-oriented aiming and targeting in a currently distributed WoW addon. | Action Combat Mode | It has a conventional CurseForge installation path and supports the listed WoW flavors. |
| Keep normal WoW combat but display configurable scrolling combat text near nameplates. | DarkSoulsSCT | It changes presentation only and does not overhaul movement or attacks. |
| Run current retail WoW with the exact prototype mechanics described for WoW Souls. | No documented option | The prototype is tied to an unofficial implementation and WoW 1.12; retail Battle.net support is not established. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The WoW Souls download behaves like an ordinary addon
That is a sign you may have downloaded Action Combat Mode or DarkSoulsSCT instead. WoW Souls is described as a client-based prototype, not a folder copied into InterfaceAddOns. Confirm the project name and its release instructions.
The prototype will not start
Verify the three documented dependencies in order: World of Warcraft 1.12, Dark Souls Remastered and the required benilla client. Then check that the paths point to the actual installations and that you are following instructions for the exact build. Because no universal launcher sequence is documented, do not substitute a guessed command.

Action Combat Mode is missing from the AddOns menu
Launch the same WoW flavor for which you installed the addon, then inspect the character-selection AddOns list if your client provides one. If it is absent or marked out of date, compare the installed release with the current CurseForge listing and reinstall the matching flavor.

The setup prompt never appeared
Open ESC > Options > AddOns > Action Combat Mode manually. A missing prompt does not prove that the addon failed to load; the options panel is the documented alternate entry point.
Controls changed after an update
Check the addon’s current release and supported flavor before changing key bindings. A game update can alter interface compatibility, while a newer addon release can rename or reorganize options. Record your current settings so you can restore them after updating.
Combat text changed but combat did not
That is expected when only DarkSoulsSCT is installed. It is a scrolling-text and stacking addon, not a combat system. Add Action Combat Mode for action-oriented controls, or use the separate WoW Souls prototype if you specifically want the reported Souls mechanics and can satisfy its experimental-client requirements.

Two dates matter when evaluating these projects. Wccftech’s WoW Souls report was published October 14, 2026 and describes an early prototype rather than official installation documentation. The Action Combat Mode listing was updated October 15, 2026 and showed version 5.0.3, supported flavors and 93,304 downloads at access time. DarkSoulsSCT’s latest listed file was version 0.5 for Retail 10.0.2, uploaded January 15, 2023, with 3,494 downloads on its 2023 listing.
Download totals are snapshots, not quality ratings or guarantees of active maintenance. Before installing, check the project’s current release notes, supported game flavor and any changed path or launch requirements. For WoW Souls in particular, wait for build-specific instructions from the project itself; the available reporting does not establish a stable public installer.
Bottom line
If by “Dark Souls combat mod” you mean the full Souls ruleset, WoW Souls is an experimental single-player client project, not a retail addon. It requires local World of Warcraft 1.12 and Dark Souls Remastered installations and uses the unofficial benilla client, with no documented one-click installer or retail multiplayer workflow. If you want an installable addon for a supported WoW flavor, install Action Combat Mode through CurseForge and configure it at ESC > Options > AddOns > Action Combat Mode. Use DarkSoulsSCT only when scrolling combat text is the feature you actually want.
