Install Net-SNMP’s daemon package and client utilities, create a narrowly scoped configuration, prefer SNMPv3, and verify queries both on the Linux host and from your monitoring system. On Ubuntu, the agent normally listens on UDP port 161; production deployments should bind it to a management address and permit only approved monitoring hosts.
What you are installing
Net-SNMP provides two parts of a typical Linux deployment:

It runs as a service, exposes management information, and waits for requests from monitoring software.- Client applications include
snmpgetfor a single object andsnmpwalkfor traversing a subtree. These commands can run on the monitored host or on a separate monitoring server.
SNMP uses a request-and-response model. The client identifies a target, protocol version, credentials or community, and object identifier (OID). The agent checks its access rules and returns the requested value if the request is permitted.
Choose a package installation or a source build

Packages are usually the safer operational choice because the distribution supplies dependency metadata and a service definition. A source build gives control but makes you responsible for integrating the daemon with your init system and for tracking future updates.

Install Net-SNMP on a Linux distribution
Debian and Ubuntu
The daemon package is commonly named snmpd, while the command-line clients are commonly in snmp. Confirm the names for the exact release before installing.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install snmpd snmpAfter installation, verify that both the agent and a client are present:
command -v snmpd
command -v snmpget
snmpd -v
snmpget -h | headDo not assume that a package installation has produced a secure policy. Inspect the installed configuration before exposing the service to a network.
RPM-family distributions
Package and unit names vary between Fedora, RHEL-compatible systems, SUSE systems and their releases. Query the enabled repositories for the package that provides the snmpd binary and the package that provides client utilities instead of copying a name from another release.
dnf search snmp
dnf provides '*/snmpd'
dnf provides '*/snmpwalk'Install the daemon and utilities returned by those queries, then check the service name supplied by the package:
sudo dnf install DAEMON_PACKAGE CLIENT_PACKAGE
systemctl list-unit-files '*snmp*'On older systems the package manager may be yum or zypper; use its equivalent search and provider commands.

sudo make installSource installation does not automatically give you the same service unit, file locations or default permissions as a distribution package. Record the installation prefix, create an appropriate service definition, and confirm where the resulting snmpd binary and configuration files are searched for.
Once the binaries are installed, configure the agent with snmpconf or by writing an snmpd.conf file manually. Do not start a production listener until you have reviewed access controls and the bind address.
Find the configuration and persistent-data paths
Agent configuration
Most Debian and Ubuntu installations use /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf. Other distributions can choose a different path, and a source build can use a prefix-specific location. Ask the package which files it installed rather than assuming a path:

dpkg -L snmpd | grep -E 'snmpd.conf|systemd'
rpm -ql DAEMON_PACKAGE | grep -E 'snmpd.conf|systemd'The daemon configuration controls access control, information supplied, active monitoring and extensions. Keep a backup of the working file before making changes.
Client configuration search path
Net-SNMP applications can read configuration from locations including /etc/snmp, /usr/share/snmp, architecture-specific directories and $HOME/.snmp. The SNMPCONFPATH environment variable can override the search path. If a client appears to ignore a setting, inspect this path and the effective user’s home directory before changing the command.
Persistent state
Persistent data commonly resides under /var/lib/snmp. Ensure that the service account can write the required files, that permissions do not expose credentials, and that backups do not make private keys or other sensitive state world-readable.
Set a safe listening address
The agentaddress directive determines which local addresses accept requests. Ubuntu documents UDP 161 on all IPv4 interfaces as the default when no narrower address is configured. That is convenient for a lab but unnecessarily broad for a server with public, tenant or untrusted interfaces.

Bind the daemon to the management interface or to another explicitly selected address. The syntax below illustrates a single IPv4 listener; use the address assigned to your management network:
agentaddress udp:192.0.2.10:161If you need more than one listener, declare each deliberately according to the Net-SNMP syntax supported by your release. Avoid binding to every interface unless network policy and host firewall rules make that choice intentional.
Restrict traffic in two places:
- On the host firewall, allow SNMP only from the monitoring server addresses and only to the configured listener.
- On upstream firewalls and network ACLs, permit the same source-to-destination path and deny other sources.
SNMP is normally queried by a monitoring system; it is not a substitute for a general-purpose remote administration channel. Keep the listener on a management network whenever possible.
Configure access control and information exposure
Why a community string is not enough
SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c identify requests with a community string. A shared string is easy to deploy but does not provide the authentication and privacy protections expected for an exposed management service. Treat a community string as a legacy compatibility mechanism, not as a strong secret.

SNMPv3 supports authenticated users and optional privacy encryption. For a monitoring account, use the authPriv security level with an authentication protocol and a privacy protocol supported by both ends. Grant read-only access unless a specific automation task requires a write operation.
Creating a user is only one part of the configuration. Net-SNMP’s View-based Access Control Model (VACM) still needs an access rule that maps that user and security level to a permitted view. A typical read-only rule uses the rouser shorthand:
rouser monitor authPrivThat example grants the named user read-only access according to the defaults and views in the active configuration. For a tighter policy, define a view containing only the OID subtree your monitoring system needs and reference that view from the access rule. Do not grant read-write access merely because a client command can perform a set operation.

Create an SNMPv3 user
Net-SNMP documents net-snmp-config --create-snmpv3-user as the supported helper for creating a v3 user. Run it according to your release’s instructions, protect the authentication and privacy passphrases, and review the resulting configuration before starting the daemon.
sudo net-snmp-config --create-snmpv3-user -ro
-A AUTH_PASS -X PRIV_PASS -a SHA -x AES monitorThe command illustrates a read-only user named monitor, SHA authentication and AES privacy. Use passphrases that meet your organization’s policy, and do not place real credentials in shell history, shared transcripts or process listings. If your distribution requires the daemon to be stopped while the helper updates its persistent user file, follow that package’s procedure.
Validate the configuration before restarting
A malformed directive, an unsupported protocol, or a file-permission problem can prevent the service from starting. Validate in the foreground so errors are visible, and use the configuration path actually installed on the host:
sudo snmpd -f -Le -c /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf-fkeeps the process in the foreground for inspection.-Lesends diagnostics to standard error.-cselects the file you intend to test.
Stop the foreground process after a successful parse and before starting the managed service. If your distribution uses another path, substitute that path; do not create a second configuration simply because the default path in an example differs from yours.
Start, enable and inspect the daemon
Use the service manager supplied by the distribution. On systems using systemd, the unit is commonly called snmpd, but confirm the exact name first.

sudo systemctl enable --now snmpd
sudo systemctl status snmpd --no-pagerIf the unit has another name, use that name in the enable, start and status commands. Read the service log when startup fails:
sudo journalctl -u snmpd -b --no-pagerConfirm that the process is listening on the intended address rather than merely checking that a service is marked active:

sudo ss -lunp | grep ':161'The output should show the configured management address. A wildcard listener indicates that the bind setting was not applied, the wrong file was edited, or another unit started the daemon with different arguments.

Query one known object
The system uptime scalar is a convenient first test because it is part of the standard system group and returns one value:

localhost 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0A successful response confirms that the client can negotiate the selected v3 security settings and that the agent permits this OID. An authentication error points to credentials or protocol settings; an authorization error usually means the VACM rule or view does not include the requested object.
Walk the system subtree
Once a single object works, walk the standard system subtree to check that multiple objects are visible:
snmpwalk -v3 -l authPriv -u monitor
-a SHA -A 'AUTH_PASS' -x AES -X 'PRIV_PASS'
localhost 1.3.6.1.2.1.1A walk that returns only part of the subtree can be correct when you intentionally configured a restricted view. Do not broaden access just to make a test walk longer; compare the returned OIDs with the monitoring policy.
Test from the monitoring server
After local queries work, run the same type of query from the monitoring host, replacing localhost with the monitored server’s management address:

HOST 1.3.6.1.2.1.1Test from the actual monitoring network, not only from another shell on the monitored machine. A local success proves that the daemon and policy work locally; it does not prove that routing, firewalls, ACLs and the remote source address are correct.
Keep the client’s version, security level, username, authentication protocol, privacy protocol and requested OID aligned with the agent configuration. Store credentials in the monitoring system’s protected secret store where possible instead of embedding them in scripts or command history.

Troubleshoot in a fixed order
- Confirm installation. Check that the
snmpd,snmpgetandsnmpwalkbinaries exist and that the expected package or source installation completed. - Validate the configuration. Run the daemon in the foreground with the intended file and read every rejected directive in the diagnostic output.
- Inspect service logs. Use the distribution’s journal or log facility to identify permission errors, unsupported options, failed user creation or a conflicting process.
- Check the listener. Inspect sockets and verify that the daemon is bound to the chosen management address, not an unintended wildcard or loopback-only address.
- Check firewalls and ACLs. Confirm host firewall rules, upstream filters and the source address of the monitoring server. A silent timeout commonly indicates a blocked path rather than a bad OID.
- Align client and agent security settings. The protocol version, security level, username, authentication algorithm, privacy algorithm and passphrases must match exactly.
- Check authorization. A reachable agent can still reject a request when VACM does not map the user to the requested OID view. Review the
rouseror explicit VACM entries and the view definition. - Check configuration search paths. If edits appear ineffective, inspect the daemon’s startup arguments, the client search locations and
SNMPCONFPATH. Also verify that you edited the file read by the active service rather than a source-tree copy.
Production checklist
- Install the daemon and client packages from the target distribution, or document the source-build prefix and service integration.
- Locate the active
snmpd.confand client configuration paths. - Bind the agent to the management address or another deliberately selected interface.
- Allow only approved monitoring hosts through host and network firewalls.
- Use SNMPv3
authPrivwith unique credentials and protected passphrases. - Create VACM rules and a read-only OID view that covers only monitoring requirements.
- Protect persistent data under the distribution’s expected directory and verify file ownership and permissions.
- Validate the configuration in the foreground before restarting the service.
- Enable the service, inspect logs and confirm the listening socket.
- Run a local
snmpget, then repeat an equivalent query from the monitoring server.
