Install the Sonnet Echo III T5 Module (part DM-MOD-E3-T5) by fitting your non-GPU PCIe card or cards, connecting any required auxiliary power, attaching the supplied certified Thunderbolt 5 cable to a genuine Thunderbolt or USB4 port, and then verifying both the module and cards in macOS System Information. The module itself needs no additional macOS driver, but each PCIe card normally needs a current, Thunderbolt-compatible Mac driver. M-series Macs require a driver explicitly supporting Apple silicon; Intel-Mac compatibility alone is not enough.
What the Echo III T5 does
The Echo III T5 Module gives a Mac three external PCIe card slots when the computer has no internal expansion slots. It accepts full-height, full-length, Thunderbolt-compatible non-GPU cards. The current hardware has one x16 mechanical slot that is electrically x8, two x8 slots, a 400 W power supply, a 75 W auxiliary power connector, and two Thunderbolt 5 ports. A Thunderbolt 5 cable is supplied.
The module is an external PCIe enclosure, not a graphics-card enclosure. Sonnet specifies support for Macs with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt/USB4 ports running macOS 15 or newer. Whether a particular capture, audio-DSP, networking, or storage card works depends on that card’s driver and compatibility list, not just on the chassis.

Confirm the Mac port
Look for a Thunderbolt symbol (a lightning bolt) or a port identified by Apple as Thunderbolt/USB4. A connector marked only with a generic USB symbol or a USB charging symbol is not sufficient. A USB-C shape describes the connector, not the protocol; the Mac must expose Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt/USB4.

Confirm macOS and card support
Use macOS 15 or newer for the current product listing. Check the PCIe card manufacturer’s Mac support page for a Thunderbolt-compatible driver and for Apple-silicon or M-series support if your Mac uses an M-series chip. An Intel-Mac driver does not automatically work on an M-series Mac. Sonnet’s guide summarizes the distinction: “Not All Mac-Compatible Cards Work With M Series Macs.”
Confirm the card fits and is the right type
- The card must be non-GPU and physically fit the full-height, full-length opening.
- Check whether it needs a six-pin auxiliary connection, and whether the card maker specifies a special cable.
- For Avid Pro Tools | HDX cards, plan to use the custom Avid power cable rather than the supplied six-pin cable.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the Echo III module and for your exact Mac model and macOS release.
Use a suitable cable and workspace
Use the bundled Thunderbolt 5 cable or another certified Thunderbolt cable. Sonnet states that full performance requires a certified cable. Prepare an antistatic wrist strap, a flat non-carpeted work surface, and the original screws. Handle every PCIe card by its edges; do not touch the contacts or components.
Know the slots, power and bandwidth
| Item | Specification or requirement |
|---|---|
| PCIe slots | One x16 mechanical/x8 electrical slot and two x8 slots |
| Cards supported | Up to three full-height, full-length, Thunderbolt-compatible non-GPU PCIe cards |
| Power supply | 400 W |
| Auxiliary card power | 75 W connector; HDX cards use the custom Avid power cable |
| Thunderbolt ports | Two Thunderbolt 5 ports |
| Mac operating system in the current listing | macOS 15 or newer |
| Thunderbolt 5 product-page bandwidth | 3,400 MB/s aggregate, bi-directional PCIe bandwidth when connected to a Thunderbolt 5 computer port |
| Bandwidth figure in the user guide | 2,880 MB/s Thunderbolt PCIe bandwidth; the guide does not state a publication year |
These bandwidth figures describe the Thunderbolt link, not a guarantee that every card will reach its internal PCIe speed. A card or workload that needs more than the available tunneled bandwidth can be limited even when the card is otherwise compatible. The 3,400 MB/s figure is the 2026 product-listing specification for a Thunderbolt 5 host; the 2,880 MB/s figure is the separate limit stated in the user guide.
Which slot should a card use?
The first slot accepts a physically x16 card but provides x8 electrical connectivity. The other two slots are x8. Select a slot that matches the card’s mechanical length and the manufacturer’s recommendations, then leave enough space for its heatsink and airflow. Slot geometry does not make an unsupported card compatible: the card still needs Thunderbolt tunneling support and a Mac driver. If you install several demanding cards, remember that they share the enclosure’s uplink rather than receiving an independent full-speed connection to the Mac.
Power planning for several cards
The 400 W supply covers the chassis and installed cards within Sonnet’s limits. A card with a six-pin input must receive the auxiliary connection before the chassis is closed. Do not substitute a random cable with a similar-looking plug; use the supplied cable or the cable specified by the card maker. HDX cards are the exception called out by Sonnet: use the custom Avid lead. If a card has no auxiliary socket, do not add one or attempt to power it externally.
Install the PCIe cards
- Power down and prepare. Remove the module from its packaging and place it on a flat, level, non-carpeted surface. Do not connect the computer or AC power while installing cards.
- Open each slot you will use. Remove the screw holding the slot access cover and set the screw and cover aside. Leave unused covers in place until the card installation is complete.
- Set the HDX mode when applicable. If you are installing one or more Avid Pro Tools | HDX cards, move the PCIe Gen 3/Gen 2 (HDX) switch to Gen 2 (HDX). Sonnet states that HDX cards will not work in the module otherwise. This switch is not an instruction for ordinary PCIe cards.
- Insert each card. Hold the card only by its edges, align its connector with the selected slot, and press straight down evenly until it is fully seated. Do not rock, twist or force the card. If the bracket does not line up, remove the card and realign it rather than tightening the screw against a misaligned connector.
- Connect auxiliary power. If the card requires auxiliary power, attach the supplied six-pin cable. For Avid HDX, use the custom Avid power cable specified for that card instead. Make sure the plug is fully seated and routed so it cannot obstruct a fan.
- Secure the installation. Reinstall the slot covers on unused openings, then secure each installed card and cover with the original screws. The screws should hold the bracket firmly without deforming it.
- Fit the module into its enclosure. Install the module into the Sonnet desktop or rackmount enclosure by following that enclosure’s installation instructions. Do not operate the module outside its intended enclosure or with vents blocked.
PCIe cards are not hot-pluggable. Before replacing or rearranging a card later, shut down the Mac and disconnect both AC power and Thunderbolt cables.

Connect the module to the Mac
- Connect the supplied certified Thunderbolt 5 cable from either Thunderbolt port on the module to a Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt/USB4 port on the Mac.
- If the module is part of a Thunderbolt chain, connect the Mac to the first powered Thunderbolt device and connect that device’s downstream port to the Echo III T5. Any device between the Mac and module must be powered on for the chain to work.
- Use the module’s second Thunderbolt port for downstream peripherals when needed. Sonnet says the port can daisy-chain up to five additional Thunderbolt peripherals.
- Connect the AC power cord, then power on the Mac and any intervening Thunderbolt devices. The module’s power LED lights only when the Mac and any intervening devices are powered on.
The module powers on and off automatically with the connected computer. It can provide up to 15 W to bus-powered peripherals, but that does not replace the need to power devices in the chain when their own requirements exceed bus power.
Direct connection versus a chain
A direct connection from the Mac to either Echo port is the simplest diagnostic arrangement and removes an intervening device as a possible cause of failure. Once the module is recognized, connect downstream storage, displays or other Thunderbolt hardware to the second port as needed. Keep in mind that five additional devices is a maximum daisy-chain count, not a promise that every device can sustain peak performance simultaneously. High-throughput peripherals and PCIe cards contend for the same host link.
Verify the module and cards in macOS
- Power on the Mac and the module. Hold the Option key, open the Apple menu, and choose System Information.
- In the left column under Hardware, select Thunderbolt.
- In the Thunderbolt Device Tree, look for DuoModo Echo III Module. Its presence confirms that macOS can see the chassis over Thunderbolt.
- Still under Hardware, select PCI.
- Find each installed card and check that Driver Installed is Yes and Tunnel Compatible is Yes.
- If either field is not Yes, download the latest macOS driver from the card manufacturer, install it, and restart the Mac. Repeat the PCI check after restarting.
Echo support is built into macOS, so the module does not normally need a separate chassis driver. The installed cards are different: Sonnet’s guide states, “While Echo III Module doesn’t require drivers beyond those pre-installed in your computer’s OS, installed cards require Thunderbolt-compatible drivers to enable their use.”
What the two PCI fields tell you
Driver Installed: Yes indicates that macOS has loaded a driver for the card. Tunnel Compatible: Yes indicates that the card can be transported over the Thunderbolt PCIe tunnel. A card can be physically seated and still fail either test. Updating firmware or software supplied by the card maker may also be required, but use only packages listed for your exact Mac architecture and macOS release.
Troubleshoot a missing module or card
The Echo III module is absent from Thunderbolt Device Tree
- Confirm that the cable is certified for Thunderbolt and firmly connected at both ends.
- Move the cable to a Mac port identified as Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt/USB4; a USB-only port will not work.
- If a Thunderbolt device is between the Mac and module, power that device on.
- Disconnect and reconnect the Thunderbolt cable. Sonnet says a shutdown is not required for this reconnect.
- Check that the Mac is on, the module is in its enclosure, vents are unobstructed, and the power cord is connected. The LED is not expected to light while the connected computer or an intervening device is off.
The module appears but a card is missing
- Open System Information > Hardware > PCI and check the Driver Installed and Tunnel Compatible fields.
- Install the current Mac driver supplied by the card manufacturer and restart.
- Verify that the exact card appears on the Echo compatibility list and that its driver supports your macOS release.
- Shut down, unplug AC and Thunderbolt cables, remove and reseat the card by its edges, reconnect any auxiliary power, and secure the bracket again. Never reseat a powered card.
The card works on an Intel Mac but not an M-series Mac
Ask the card manufacturer specifically for an M-series-compatible driver. The fact that a card works with an Intel Mac driver does not establish Apple-silicon support. If no M-series driver is available, the chassis cannot make that card compatible.
An HDX card fails to initialize
Confirm both special requirements: the custom Avid power cable is installed and the module’s PCIe Gen 3/Gen 2 switch is set to Gen 2 (HDX). Sonnet states that HDX cards will not work in the module with the switch left in the ordinary setting.

Throughput is lower than expected
- Replace an uncertified or damaged cable with the supplied certified Thunderbolt 5 cable.
- Check that the Mac is connected through a Thunderbolt 5 port when you expect the product-page 3,400 MB/s aggregate figure; a lower-generation connection has different link capabilities.
- Confirm the card is in the appropriate slot and that its workload is not competing with several other high-bandwidth cards or daisy-chained peripherals.
- Remember that the user guide states a 2,880 MB/s Thunderbolt PCIe bandwidth limit; a card needing more tunneled bandwidth cannot reach its native internal PCIe rate through this link.
Choosing cards and comparing alternatives
For a capture card, audio-DSP card, 10Gb or 25Gb Ethernet adapter, or PCIe SSD, evaluate the card and chassis as a pair. Confirm the exact card model on Sonnet’s compatibility list, then confirm that its manufacturer supplies a current driver for the intended Intel or M-series Mac. A card advertised as “Mac compatible” may refer only to Intel systems.
If you are comparing the Echo III T5 with another expansion chassis, use the same checklist: supported Mac ports and macOS versions; number of slots and their mechanical and electrical widths; Thunderbolt generation and sustained PCIe bandwidth; auxiliary power available to cards; desktop or rackmount format; fan and noise characteristics; and the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact card. A chassis with more slots is not automatically better if its driver support, power budget or link bandwidth does not match your workload.
Operating and maintaining the chassis
Keep cooling unobstructed
The module uses temperature-controlled fans to cool the installed cards. Keep every vent clear, do not place the module on a surface that blocks airflow, and do not operate it outside its specified enclosure. A card that is stable on an open test bench can overheat when airflow is restricted.
Plan safe card changes
Because the cards are not hot-pluggable, save work, shut down macOS, disconnect the AC cord and Thunderbolt cables, and wait for the system to power down before opening the enclosure. Reverse the installation steps when replacing a card, including reconnecting auxiliary power and reinstalling slot covers.
Use the second Thunderbolt port deliberately
The second port is useful for a daisy chain of up to five additional Thunderbolt peripherals. Every added device shares the host link’s available bandwidth, so place latency-sensitive or high-throughput work as close to the Mac as practical and avoid assuming that each device receives a separate full-speed connection.

Does the Echo III T5 need a Mac driver?
Sonnet says Echo support is built into macOS, so the module normally needs no separate chassis driver. Each installed PCIe card can require its own Thunderbolt-compatible driver, firmware and architecture support.
Can I install a graphics card?
No. The module is specified for Thunderbolt-compatible non-GPU PCIe cards. Choose capture, audio, networking or storage cards only after checking the card maker’s Mac and Echo compatibility information.
Can I add or remove a card while the Mac is running?
No. PCIe cards are not hot-pluggable. Shut down the Mac, disconnect AC and Thunderbolt cables, and only then open the enclosure and handle a card.
Why does the module appear but my card does not?
In System Information, open Hardware > PCI and inspect Driver Installed and Tunnel Compatible. Install the current card driver, restart, and verify the exact model on the compatibility list. If it still fails, power down and reseat the card and its auxiliary cable.
What is the practical bandwidth?
Sonnet’s 2026 product listing specifies 3,400 MB/s aggregate, bi-directional PCIe bandwidth with a Thunderbolt 5 host. The user guide cites a 2,880 MB/s Thunderbolt PCIe limit. Treat both as link limits rather than a promise of native card speed, especially when multiple cards or daisy-chained peripherals are active.
