Install the current AmneziaVPN app from Amnezia’s official source for your operating system, then choose the connection path you actually have: VPN by Amnezia (Free), a vpn:// subscription key (Premium), or Self-hosted VPN with an existing Linux server. Free and Premium do not require you to run a server. Minimum OS versions, store availability, split tunneling and KillSwitch controls differ by platform.
The steps below cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, followed by first-connection setup and fixes for the most common connection failures.
Choose the AmneziaVPN connection method first
AmneziaVPN presents three different ways to connect. Selecting the right one prevents the most common setup mistake: looking for a subscription key when you intend to use Free, or trying to configure a server you do not need.

What Amnezia Free provides
Free is an in-app regional service intended to reach certain websites in Russia and some other regions with strict internet censorship. Amnezia says Free does not provide YouTube access in Russia and does not publish a complete list of covered resources. Availability depends on your region, so the Free option may not appear or may not work when you are outside a supported area.

What Premium requires
Premium uses a subscription key beginning with vpn://. You can find it in the Personal Dashboard or in the order email. If you purchase Premium inside the Android or iOS app, Amnezia’s instructions say the connection is added automatically, so you do not normally paste a key yourself.
When self-hosting is appropriate
Self-hosting is for someone who already controls a Linux server or is prepared to rent one and administer it. You supply the server address and SSH credentials, choose the protocol and installation type, and the app deploys the selected configuration. It is optional; neither Free nor Premium depends on it.
Supported systems and installation requirements
Use the latest stable release rather than searching for a particular installer version. Requirements and store listings can change; the following are the current baselines documented by Amnezia.

How to install AmneziaVPN on Windows
- Open Amnezia’s official release or download documentation and choose the latest stable Windows
.exefor a supported 64-bit Windows installation. - Run the installer. When it asks for a destination, leave the path as
C:Program FilesAmneziaVPN. Changing this path can stop the application from working correctly. - Complete the installation and restart Windows if prompted. A restart is also recommended when the installer finishes without a prompt.
- Open AmneziaVPN and proceed to the Free, Premium or Self-hosted setup in the next section.
Windows runtime error
If the installer or application reports a missing MSVCP140.dll or MSVCP141.dll, use the current Amnezia troubleshooting instructions for the Visual C++ redistributable package. The exact file and repair procedure can change, so follow the version of that support article that accompanies your release rather than copying an outdated DLL from an unrelated website.

How to install AmneziaVPN on macOS
- Download the latest stable macOS
.pkgfrom Amnezia’s official release documentation. - Open the package and follow the installer prompts. Enter an administrator password or approve a system extension request if macOS asks.
- Restart the Mac if the installer requests it, then launch AmneziaVPN from Applications.
- Choose your connection route and configure it as described below.
The current AmneziaVPN app requires macOS 14 or newer. If your Mac cannot run that version, the documentation identifies AmneziaWG as an alternative rather than presenting an older AmneziaVPN build as supported.
How to install AmneziaVPN on Android
- Use the official Android listing when it is available in your region. The supported baseline is Android 9 or later.
- If Google Play is unavailable, download the latest APK from Amnezia’s GitHub releases page.
- When Android blocks the package, allow installation from unknown sources only for the browser or file manager you used to obtain the APK. Install the package, then revoke that permission if you do not need it again.
- Open AmneziaVPN and continue with Free, Premium or Self-hosted configuration.
APK installations require manual updates because they do not receive automatic Play Store updates. Check the official releases page periodically and replace the APK with the newest stable build.
Prevent Android from stopping the VPN
Android battery restrictions can stop AmneziaVPN’s background activity and make a connection drop when the screen is off. In Android settings, open the battery or app-power-management page for AmneziaVPN and disable battery optimization for the app. The exact menu name varies by phone manufacturer.

How to install AmneziaVPN on iPhone or iPad
- Check the App Store in your region for AmneziaVPN. The current baseline is iOS 16 or later.
- If the listing is unavailable, use Amnezia’s official regional instructions. Store restrictions differ by country, and the appropriate alternative can differ between Free and Premium use.
- Install the available official app, approve the VPN configuration request from iOS, and open it.
- Choose the matching connection route. Do not assume that an app downloaded in one region offers every Free or Premium workflow.
Amnezia documents no built-in KillSwitch for iOS. iOS also supports IP-based split tunneling only, as described later.

How do I install AmneziaVPN without Google Play?
On Android, use the latest APK published in Amnezia’s official GitHub releases. Enable unknown-source installation only for the browser or file manager that downloaded the file, install it, and then turn that permission back off if desired. Because sideloaded APKs are not updated automatically, repeat the check whenever Amnezia publishes a new stable release. Do not use APK mirrors when the official release is available.
Complete the first connection
After installation, the sequence is the same on each platform, but the fields differ by route.
- Open the app. For Free, disconnect another active VPN first and open AmneziaVPN while you are in a region where Free is available.
- Add a connection. Select the option to add or create a connection and choose Free, Premium or Self-hosted according to what you have.
- Finish the route-specific setup. Follow one of the three procedures below.
- Connect and observe the app status. A connected indicator means the app completed its connection procedure, but it does not by itself prove that every website or application is receiving traffic. Use the troubleshooting steps if pages still fail to load.
- Configure optional controls. Split tunneling, KillSwitch and startup behavior are platform-specific; enable them only after the basic connection works.
Set up Amnezia Free
- Choose Add connection (or the equivalent add button).
- Select VPN by Amnezia.
- Wait for the available options to load.
- Choose the Amnezia Free entry for your region.
- Connect. On iOS, follow the separate Free instructions linked from Amnezia’s documentation if the standard flow is not available in your store region.
If Free is absent, you may be outside a supported region or the service may not be available to your network. Amnezia does not publish a complete list of covered resources, so the presence of a connection does not guarantee access to a particular website.
Connect AmneziaVPN with a subscription key
- Open Add connection and choose the Premium or subscription-key option.
- Paste the complete key, including the
vpn://prefix, from the Personal Dashboard or order email. - Continue to let the app import the location and protocol configuration.
- Select the imported location and connect.
When Premium was purchased inside the Android or iOS app, look for the automatically added connection before trying to paste a key manually.

Configure a self-hosted VPN
- Choose Self-hosted VPN from the connection-type list.
- Enter the Linux server’s IP address. Enter its SSH port too when it is not the default port.
- Enter the SSH username.
- Authenticate with the server password or a private key, using whichever credential the server accepts.
- Select the installation type and VPN protocol offered by the app.
- Start the installation and wait for AmneziaVPN to finish deploying the selected protocol.
- Connect through the new profile.
Self-hosting requires valid SSH access and a reachable server. The app cannot create this route without those server-side prerequisites.
Configure split tunneling by platform
Split tunneling determines which traffic uses the VPN and which traffic uses the ordinary connection. Amnezia’s support matrix is not identical across operating systems.

IP split tunneling is unavailable for Amnezia Free. If you need that control, check whether your route and platform support it before changing the connection profile.

Configure KillSwitch and automatic startup
KillSwitch
- Windows, macOS and Linux: KillSwitch settings are available in the AmneziaVPN app. Enable them only after confirming that your connection works, then test the behavior by disconnecting deliberately.
- Android: There is no built-in Amnezia app KillSwitch. Android’s system settings provide Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN; enable those options for AmneziaVPN if you need system-enforced blocking.
- iOS: AmneziaVPN has no built-in KillSwitch.
Start the app with the operating system
Autostart is available in AmneziaVPN for Windows, macOS and Linux. The Android and iOS apps do not provide an Amnezia autostart control, so do not expect the VPN to launch automatically at phone boot.

Troubleshoot a connection that fails or carries no traffic
Premium key is rejected or the connection shows no traffic
- Update AmneziaVPN to the latest stable app release.
- Open the affected location’s settings.
- Choose Reload API config.
- Try another available location.
- If the problem remains, switch to another protocol offered for that location and reconnect.
Check that the imported key is complete and still active. A successful key import does not guarantee that every location is currently reachable.
Amnezia Free cannot connect
- Open the Free connection settings and use Reload API config.
- If it still fails, delete the Free connection and create it again through VPN by Amnezia.
- If Free works on home internet but not on mobile data, the mobile operator may use a restricted whitelist; Amnezia identifies that network condition as a likely explanation.
Android disconnects in the background
Disable battery optimization for AmneziaVPN in Android’s app or battery settings. Aggressive background limits can terminate the VPN process even when the profile and credentials are correct.
Linux Connect button does nothing
Confirm that IPv6 has not been disabled. Amnezia’s Linux guide warns that disabling IPv6 can stop the Connect button from working. Also review the dependency notes for your specific distribution and install any required packages before launching the _linux_x64.run installer again.

First update the app, reload the location’s API configuration, try another location and switch protocol if available. Then inspect split-tunneling rules: an IP or app exception can intentionally send traffic outside the tunnel. If you enabled KillSwitch, temporarily verify the profile without it so that a failed tunnel is not being blocked by design.
