In Debian, changing a wallpaper is normally a per-user settings task, not a separate software installation. Open the wallpaper controls provided by your desktop: Appearance in GNOME, the desktop configuration dialog in KDE Plasma, or Settings Manager → Desktop in Xfce. Choose an existing image or add your own. Installing a system-wide wallpaper collection or enforcing a default is a different administrative job.
You usually do not need a special wallpaper application. The desktop environment already knows how to select a file, preview it, and apply it. The exact labels can vary with Debian’s desktop version, language, and packaging, but the workflow remains the same.
First, identify what “install a wallpaper” means
Two different jobs are often described as installing a wallpaper:
- Set one personal image: select a file in the desktop’s wallpaper chooser. This usually changes only your account and takes no administrator privileges.
- Provide a collection or enforce a default: place images in a shared location, install a desktop theme, or configure a managed default. This can require administrative access and depends on the desktop and Debian release.
The instructions below cover Debian systems running GNOME, KDE Plasma, or Xfce. They are separate workflows; there is no single Debian wallpaper panel shared by all three desktops. A wallpaper and a lock-screen or login-screen background may also have separate controls, so changing the desktop image does not necessarily change those other screens.

Before you begin
Know which desktop session is running. GNOME, Plasma, and Xfce can all be installed on one Debian system, and the active session determines which settings panel controls the desktop. Keep the image somewhere your account can read. If you are selecting a file from a removable drive, network mount, or temporary directory, the wallpaper may stop working when that location is unavailable. For a managed installation, choose a stable local path that remains readable by every intended user.

Labels and dialog layouts can vary with the installed desktop version, language, and Debian packaging. If a label is slightly different, look for the same wallpaper or background control rather than assuming the feature is missing.
Change the wallpaper in Debian GNOME
Use Appearance
- Open Activities and search for Appearance.
- Open Appearance and select one of the supplied background images, or choose Add Picture… to browse to a photo on your computer.
- Select the image. GNOME applies the change immediately; there is normally no separate Save button.
GNOME’s official user help describes this function plainly: “You can choose an image or wallpaper as your desktop background.” The exact panel wording can differ by GNOME version or translation.

Use the chooser when you want to compare several files or return to one of the images supplied with Debian. The panel is intended for the current user, so selecting a picture there does not install it for every account on the machine.
Set a file directly from Files
For a quick change, open the file manager, right-click an image, and choose Set as Background…. The image can also be opened in Image Viewer and set from the viewer’s titlebar menu. These shortcuts use the same desktop-background setting as Appearance.
If the command is absent, confirm that the file manager is integrated with the active GNOME session and that you are right-clicking an image rather than a folder. Opening the image in Image Viewer provides an alternative route.
If you cannot see the result
Switch to an empty workspace if necessary. A maximized window, overview screen, or application covering the desktop can hide the new background even though GNOME has already applied it. If the file does not appear in the chooser, verify that you selected the actual image file and that your account can read it.

Changing the desktop background does not automatically change the lock screen or a display-manager login screen. Those surfaces can have independent settings or administrator policies.
Change the wallpaper in Debian KDE Plasma
Open the desktop configuration dialog
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Open the desktop configuration or settings dialog from the context menu.
- Go to the Wallpaper area. Select an image already shown there, or choose Open… to browse for a personal file.
- Choose how the image should fit the display. The KDE Handbook illustration shows Wallpaper Type: Image, Positioning: Scaled, and a background-color control; other positioning choices may be available in your Plasma version.
- Apply or close the dialog using the controls shown by your release. Plasma normally updates the desktop as you select the image and positioning.
Positioning matters when the image and display have different proportions. A scaled or fitted image can preserve the complete picture with surrounding color, while a fill or crop-style option can cover the screen at the cost of cutting off part of the image. The available names and choices vary by Plasma version.
Read the preview after changing both the image and its position. A color control can determine the area visible around an image that does not fill the desktop. Plasma may expose additional wallpaper types besides a local image, but the image workflow is the portable choice for a file you already own.
Download wallpapers through Plasma
Where the feature is present, select Get New Wallpapers… in the wallpaper configuration dialog. Plasma uses its KNewStuff integration to browse and download additional wallpapers. Availability and the exact dialog layout depend on the installed Plasma release and its packages; it is not a requirement for setting a local image.
Downloaded items are an optional convenience, not a substitute for the Open… file chooser. If the download control is not shown, continue with a local image or check that the relevant Plasma components are installed for your release.
When the context menu is missing
Make sure you right-click an empty desktop area rather than a window, panel, or widget. If desktop actions have been restricted by an administrator, open the desktop settings from the system’s configuration tools instead. A different Plasma layout can move the configuration command while retaining the Wallpaper section.
Change the wallpaper in Debian Xfce
Open Desktop settings
- Open Settings Manager → Desktop, or right-click an empty desktop area and choose Desktop Settings….
- Open the Background tab.
- Choose a single image, a multiple-image option if your installed Xfce release offers one, or a color scheme.
- Select the image and any display or arrangement option shown by the dialog. Xfce applies the selection to the desktop.
Xfce’s choices are intentionally direct: the Background tab controls whether the desktop uses an image, a set of images, or a plain color. A multiple-image control is release-dependent, so its absence does not indicate a broken installation.

If you only need one photo, browse to it from the Background tab and leave it in your personal files. There is no need to copy it into a system directory merely to make it the current user’s wallpaper.
Add images to Xfce’s listed backdrop directory
The Xubuntu documentation describes a system collection method: copy or symlink images into /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/. Writing to that directory requires administrative privileges. After the files are placed there, they can become available in the Background tab for users on that installation.
For a single personal photo, do not modify a system directory. Use the Background tab’s file chooser instead. A system directory is appropriate only when you deliberately want a shared collection and understand that package changes or local administration may affect it.
The Xubuntu guide is not a promise that every Debian Xfce release exposes identical labels or behavior. Debian’s package versions and defaults can differ, so treat the directory method as a documented Xfce-family option and confirm the result in your installed dialog.
A symlink can keep the collection in another managed location, but the target must remain readable. If a link points to a disconnected drive or an inaccessible directory, Xfce may omit the item or fail to display it.

Why one package command does not cover all three desktops
GNOME, Plasma, and Xfce store and expose wallpaper assets differently. Advice that says to install one package or copy files to one universal directory can be wrong for the target desktop or Debian release. Decide first whether you need a per-user image, a shared gallery, or an enforced default.
Administrative changes also affect more than the person making them. Before replacing a distribution asset, document the original path and test the result in each desktop session that the machine supports. A theme asset supplied for GNOME is not automatically the asset Plasma or Xfce displays.

Debian’s desktop-base assets
Debian’s desktop-base package integrates distribution theme assets by environment. Its package README describes a GNOME background XML alternative, a Plasma wallpaper alternative, and a general desktop-background asset for Xfce and MATE. These are distribution defaults and theme integrations; they are not the same as selecting your own photo in the user settings panel. The exact asset and behavior are release-aware, so check the package documentation for the Debian release you administer.
Installing or updating that package may restore branded defaults, but it does not provide a universal method for choosing a personal image. Treat package-managed files as distribution content and user-selected files as separate layers.
Managed GNOME defaults with dconf
For managed GNOME installations, the GNOME system-administrator documentation describes setting a default with dconf. The relevant keys include picture-uri for the image location and picture-options for how it is displayed.
- Place the image at a stable local file location that the intended users can read. A user’s temporary download folder is a poor choice for a system default because it may move or become inaccessible.
- Set the GNOME background keys in the dconf configuration used by your deployment, including the local file URI and the desired picture option.
- Run
dconf updateso the compiled system configuration is regenerated. - Test the result with the GNOME version actually deployed. The administrator documentation also describes locking the keys when users must not override the managed background.
A default is not automatically a lock. If you only set the initial value, users may still be able to change it from Appearance. Lock the relevant keys only when that policy is intentional. If the policy later changes, remove or adjust the lock as part of the administrative configuration rather than asking users to repeatedly reset their wallpaper.
Choosing image placement without a universal resolution rule
The available sources do not establish one recommended image format or resolution that applies to every Debian GNOME, Plasma, and Xfce installation. Displays, scaling settings, and desktop versions differ. Instead of relying on a universal number, use the positioning controls provided by your desktop:
- Scaled or fitted: keeps the whole image visible, potentially leaving bands of background color.
- Filled or cropped: covers the screen, potentially trimming edges.
- Tiled: repeats a smaller image when the option is provided.
- Centered: leaves the image at its natural size with surrounding color when supported.
GNOME, Plasma, and Xfce do not necessarily use the same names for these behaviors. Select the preview that keeps the important part of the image visible on your actual display. If a positioning choice is not offered, use the closest available option rather than installing a separate utility solely for scaling.

Troubleshoot common wallpaper problems
The image changed, but the desktop still looks the same
- Move or minimize full-screen and maximized windows, then check an empty workspace.
- Confirm that you changed the desktop background rather than a lock-screen or login-screen setting.
- In Plasma or Xfce, reopen the wallpaper dialog and verify that the selected image and positioning control were applied.
- Check whether an administrator has imposed a managed background, particularly in GNOME.
The image is not offered in the chooser
- Use Add Picture… in GNOME or Open… in Plasma instead of expecting every folder to be indexed automatically.
- In Xfce, browse to the file from the Background tab, or place a shared copy in
/usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/only when you have deliberately chosen a system-wide collection. - Check file permissions. The desktop process must be able to read the image and any parent directories.
- If the file is on removable or network storage, make sure that location is mounted before opening the chooser.
The menu labels do not match these steps
Desktop panels are version- and translation-dependent. GNOME may present Appearance through Activities search; Plasma may call its dialog desktop configuration; Xfce may expose the same panel as Desktop Settings…. Search for the terms background, wallpaper, or desktop in the relevant settings tool, and avoid mixing instructions from another desktop.

A managed GNOME background keeps returning
An administrator may have set and locked picture-uri or related dconf keys. In that case, a user-level change in Appearance cannot override the policy. The system administrator must change the deployed configuration, run dconf update, and remove or adjust the lock if users are meant to customize their backgrounds.
Which method should you use?
- One personal photo: use the desktop chooser or the GNOME file shortcut. This is the simplest and least invasive method.
- Several shared choices on Xfce: ask an administrator to copy or symlink images into
/usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/, then select them in the Background tab. - Extra downloadable choices on Plasma: use Get New Wallpapers… when KNewStuff is available.
- A controlled GNOME workstation: configure
picture-uriandpicture-optionsthrough dconf, rundconf update, and lock the keys only if policy requires it. - Debian’s branded default theme: investigate the release’s
desktop-basepackage rather than replacing user settings or assuming a GNOME-only mechanism works in Plasma or Xfce.
Final checklist
- Identify whether the session is GNOME, KDE Plasma, or Xfce.
- For GNOME, open Activities → Appearance and use Add Picture…, or right-click an image and choose Set as Background….
- For Plasma, right-click the desktop, open its configuration, select an image or Open…, and choose positioning.
- For Xfce, open Settings Manager → Desktop or Desktop Settings…, then use the Background tab.
- Use shared directories, theme packages, or dconf only when you need system-wide behavior and have the required privileges.
- Check separately for lock-screen and login-screen controls.
- Keep managed images in stable, readable locations and verify the result after a logout or restart when administering multiple accounts.

How do I set a downloaded photo as my GNOME wallpaper?

There is no single resolution recommendation that applies to all three desktops and every Debian display. Use the positioning control in your desktop: scaled or fitted keeps the whole image visible, while filled or cropped covers the screen but can trim edges.
Why can’t I change the GNOME wallpaper?
A managed GNOME installation may set and lock the dconf keys picture-uri and picture-options. A user-level change in Appearance cannot override a lock. The administrator must adjust the policy, run dconf update, and remove the lock if customization should be allowed.
