The best Starlink installation starts with the sky, not the mount. Before drilling or fixing anything, use the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool from the exact position and height where the dish will sit. Trees, roof lines, poles and nearby structures can interrupt satellite links as satellites move overhead. Then follow the alignment procedure for your specific dish generation: Standard and Mini models use the app’s alignment tool, while Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1 models level themselves automatically.

This guide covers site selection, pre-install scanning, model-specific alignment, safe permanent mounting, cable routing, post-install verification and the most common obstruction and alignment problems. Starlink app labels and hardware procedures can change, so confirm the current instructions for your exact kit immediately before installation.

Start with the dish model and the type of installation

Starlink alignment is not universal. Identify the model or generation printed on the kit, its packaging or your account before following a procedure. The guidance for a Standard or Mini dish is different from the guidance for a Standard Actuated or Performance Gen 1 dish.

  • Standard and Mini: use the Starlink app’s alignment tool and rotate the dish when the app asks.
  • Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1: Starlink says these dishes automatically level themselves to search for satellites. Do not manually force or adjust the dish.

Also decide whether you are testing a temporary location or making a fixed installation. A temporary setup lets you compare sites, but a permanent roof, wall or pole mount adds surface, cable-entry and safety requirements. The hardware must be compatible with both your dish generation and the surface where it will be attached.

How to check for obstructions before installing Starlink

The phone-based scan is a planning estimate; it is not the same as the obstruction map produced by a dish that is already online. Run the scan at every candidate site before you commit to a mount.

  1. Install or open the Starlink app and choose Check for Obstructions.
  2. Stand at the intended dish position. Hold the phone where the dish will actually be located, including the planned roof, wall or pole height.
  3. Point and move the phone through the sky-view exercise shown by the app. Include the area that the dish will need to see, not merely the view from the ground beside the mount.
  4. If the app asks for hardware, select the model that matches the dish you will install.
  5. Record the result, then repeat the scan at other candidate positions or at a different height.

The scan is intended to identify objects such as branches, roofs and poles in the dish’s field of view. A location that looks open from eye level can be blocked once the dish is placed beside a parapet, under eaves or behind a taller section of roof.

Starlink explains the scan and the later obstruction map in its obstruction guidance. Because the app and localized support pages can change, use the labels shown by your current app rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Choose a location that gives the dish room to work

Use the scan result together with physical clearance. The dish needs an unobstructed sky view and enough space to orient without hitting a roof edge, wall, chimney, railing or other structure. A mount by itself does not improve service; elevation helps only when it clears the object that was blocking the view.

Ground-level or temporary placement

A temporary ground position is useful for testing a site when the surrounding sky is open. Keep the dish stable, protect the cable from vehicles and foot traffic, and avoid placing it where a future wall, fence, tree canopy or roof extension will enter the field of view. If the app scan shows blockage, move to another position rather than permanently fastening the dish there.

Roof placement

A roof can provide a wider view than a yard, especially where nearby buildings or trees surround the property. Check the app from the planned dish height and leave clearance for the dish to orient. The roof structure, flashing, penetrations and fall protection may require a qualified installer; do not climb or drill where you cannot work safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pole placement

A pole can raise the dish above a hedge, roof line or other obstruction. Confirm that the pole and its base are suitable for the dish generation and local conditions, and that the cable can be routed and protected without sharp bends or abrasion. Raising a dish that remains below the obstruction will not solve the problem.

Wall placement

A wall mount can be appropriate when the wall faces an open part of the sky and the dish will project clear of the roof or wall surface. Starlink’s Standard Wall Mount Install Guide shows the clearance and installation considerations for that mount. Verify that the guide applies to your exact dish and mount before drilling.

Compare the practical choices

Option Use it when Checks before fixing it Important limitation
Temporary ground position The scan shows an open sky view and you need to test service first Stable base, protected cable, no people or vehicles crossing the route Nearby trees, fences or future construction can still interrupt service
Roof mount Ground-level view is blocked and the roof provides a clear field of view Structural attachment, dish orientation clearance, safe access and weatherproof cable entry Working at height may require professional installation
Pole mount Additional height is needed to clear a specific obstruction Compatible pole and bracket, secure base, wind exposure and protected cable route Height helps only if the obstruction is actually cleared
Wall mount A suitable wall faces open sky and can support the bracket Exact model compatibility, wall construction, projection clearance and cable entry A wall, eave or roof edge can still block the dish if it is mounted too close

Starlink identifies roof, pole and wall positions as possible elevated choices, but its guidance does not establish one mount type as universally best. Choose the option that passes the sky scan, hardware-compatibility, clearance, cable and safety checks.

Connect the kit according to its own installation guide

Cables and connectors vary among Starlink products. Use the guide supplied with your kit instead of treating the Standard procedure as a universal recipe. For the Standard kit, the official Standard Install Guide instructs you to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Insert the dish cable fully into the dish.
  2. Route the cable to the router port marked for the antenna or dish connection.
  3. Connect the router to power as shown in the guide.

Keep the cable away from pinch points, sharp edges, heat sources and standing water. If a permanent route requires drilling, use weatherproof cable-entry methods suitable for the wall or roof material. The exact entry hardware and bend requirements depend on your kit and surface, so do not assume that an accessory designed for another generation will fit.

Power the system only after all connectors are seated as directed. A loose or partially inserted dish cable can look like an alignment or satellite problem when the underlying issue is the physical connection.

Align the dish using the procedure for your model

Standard and Mini

  1. Open the Starlink app after the dish and router are connected.
  2. Open the alignment tool and follow its on-screen orientation indicator.
  3. Rotate the dish only as the app requests; do not substitute a generic compass bearing or angle.
  4. Wait for the app to stop reporting an alignment issue before you permanently secure the mount.

The app may ask for a rotation because the dish’s current orientation is not optimal. Make small, controlled changes and keep the dish clear of nearby structures while it settles.

Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1

Starlink says these models automatically level themselves to search for satellites. Leave the mechanism free to move and do not manually tilt, twist or force the dish into a position. If the system reports a problem, use the app’s status and troubleshooting instructions rather than applying the Standard or Mini manual-rotation procedure.

Leave orientation clearance

A fixed-install alert can prompt you to rotate the dish with the alignment tool. Before tightening every fastener, make sure the dish has enough room to complete that movement without contacting a roof, wall, chimney, railing or mount hardware. Starlink’s fixed-install guidance and the Wall Mount Install Guide both emphasize confirming alignment and obstruction status before making the installation permanent.

Verify the live connection before you make the installation permanent

Do not treat a successful power-up as proof that the site is clear. Once the dish is online, Starlink records actual blockages based on satellite connections. The live obstruction map can take up to 12 hours to complete, according to Starlink’s obstruction guidance. Leave the system operating long enough for that map to become meaningful before judging a borderline location.

  1. Check the app for an alignment warning and resolve it using the model-specific process.
  2. Check the obstruction status after the dish has established service.
  3. Allow up to 12 hours for the live map to finish building.
  4. If the map or service status shows significant blockage or repeated interruption, stop before finalizing the mount and reassess the location.

The pre-install phone scan answers “what might block this view?” The live map answers “what has actually interrupted this dish’s satellite connections?” Use both: the first to choose a site, the second to validate the installed position.

What to do when obstructions interrupt service

The app reports obstructions

First identify the object and its relationship to the dish height. If a branch, roof section or pole is in the affected part of the sky, move the dish, remove the obstruction only where it is safe and permitted, or raise the dish so it clears the object. Starlink’s obstruction troubleshooting guidance lists relocation, clearing an obstruction and raising the dish as the relevant remedies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Raising the dish did not help

Re-run the scan from the new height. A small increase may leave the same roof ridge or tree canopy in the field of view. A mount is useful only when the new position changes the line of sight enough to remove the blockage.

The dish has no safe access

Do not turn a roof, pole or tree-climbing problem into a DIY instruction. Starlink says not to proceed and to seek professional assistance if you cannot safely install the kit or clear the obstruction. A professional can also assess structural attachment, fall hazards and weatherproof cable routing.

Permanent-install checklist

  • The dish model and generation are identified, and the chosen mount is designed for that hardware.
  • The Starlink app scan was performed at the actual planned height and position.
  • The site provides a clear field of view, including clearance for the dish’s orientation movement.
  • The model-specific alignment process has completed without an active alignment alert.
  • The dish cable is fully seated, protected from damage and routed through a weatherproof entry where necessary.
  • The live obstruction map has been allowed up to 12 hours to develop.
  • The mount, roof, wall or pole can be accessed and worked on safely.

Recheck the app after severe weather, nearby construction or seasonal tree growth changes the surroundings. If interruptions begin after the environment changes, run the obstruction checks again before replacing equipment.

Common mistakes that produce a poor connection

  • Scanning beside the installation instead of at it: the phone must represent the dish position and height, not a more open spot several feet away.
  • Using the wrong hardware selection in the app: choose the model requested by the obstruction or alignment tool.
  • Applying one dish’s angle to another: Standard and Mini use app-guided alignment; Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1 self-level.
  • Mounting before checking clearance: a dish that cannot orient freely can trigger an alignment problem even when the sky above appears open.
  • Judging the site immediately: the live obstruction map can take up to 12 hours, so an early status is not the completed obstruction record.
  • Assuming elevation always fixes blockage: height helps only when it puts the dish above or beyond the obstruction.
  • Continuing an unsafe installation: stop and use a qualified professional when access, drilling or obstruction removal cannot be performed safely.

Keep the instructions current

Starlink’s support pages and app interface are updated over time, and localized support URLs may display region-specific versions. Before installing or changing a permanent mount, open the current instructions for your exact model, confirm that the app labels still match, and verify that any mount or cable-entry accessory is intended for that generation.
