Install an open-source launcher from its official distribution channel, open it once, then assign it in Android’s Home app or Default apps setting. Keep your existing launcher installed until the replacement survives your checks; you can switch back from the same selector at any time.
This guide covers KISS and Lawnchair, two projects with different approaches. KISS is a small, search-first launcher, while Lawnchair provides a conventional home screen with Pixel-like customization. Android’s menu names vary by phone maker and Android version, so the reliable method is to search Settings for Default apps, Home app, or Launcher rather than following one supposedly universal path.
What an Android launcher does
A launcher is the app Android displays when you press the Home button. KISS documentation defines it as “the application that appears on Android when you press the ‘Home’ button.” It supplies the home screen, app list or app drawer, search interface, icons, widgets, and sometimes gestures or shortcuts.
Replacing a launcher does not replace Android itself, your installed apps, or your files. It changes the layer you use to reach those apps. Your previous launcher normally remains installed, which gives you a safe rollback route if the new one does not suit your phone.

Open-source projects let you inspect their source and publish their own release information, but “open source” does not automatically mean every build is trustworthy or current. Install from the project’s stated channel, check the package permissions, and avoid an old or unofficial mirror when an official build is available.
Choose the launcher that matches how you work
KISS: search first, minimal surface
KISS is designed around typing rather than arranging many pages of icons. You search for an app or contact, then launch it from the results. Tags and favorites can shorten the path to items you use often. This suits a phone where you want a lightweight, text-driven workflow and little visual decoration.
The current KISS package listed by F-Droid requires Android 5.0 or newer. F-Droid added version 3.26.0 on July 3, 2026. The listing describes the application as 250 KB and reports that “93% of users that try KISS for a week are still active users after 3 years”; those figures are claims shown by the listing, not independent measurements.
Lawnchair: familiar home screen with extensive styling
Lawnchair is an open-source home app based on Launcher3. Its project emphasizes a Pixel-like layout with a conventional home screen, app drawer, widgets, icon packs, fonts, Material theming, and color controls. Choose it when you want the standard Android-style arrangement but more control over appearance and behavior.
Lawnchair’s official project repository and release guidance are the authoritative places to identify an official build. Check the release notes for your Android version and device before installing. The supplied project information does not establish a single minimum Android version for every Lawnchair release, so do not infer one from KISS’s requirement.

Prepare before installing
A few checks prevent most avoidable problems. Complete them before downloading an APK or changing the Home app assignment.
- Identify your Android version. Open Settings and search for Android version or Software information. Confirm that the launcher release supports it; KISS’s current F-Droid package requires Android 5.0 or later.
- Keep the stock or previous launcher. Do not disable or uninstall it before the replacement has been selected and tested. Android may rely on a working home app to recover from a failed setup.
- Use a legitimate source. Prefer the KISS F-Droid client listing or Google Play listing, and Lawnchair’s official project download or release channel. Treat a random APK mirror as a different, unverified build.
- Review permissions. Read the store or repository permission list. KISS’s F-Droid page lists package-query access and optional accessibility use for a double-tap-to-lock feature. Enable optional capabilities only when you intend to use them.
- Record your current arrangement. If your present launcher has a layout you may want to restore, note important widgets, folders, and shortcuts. A launcher switch does not guarantee that another launcher can import that arrangement.
- Have a recovery route. Know how to open Settings from the notification shade or app list. If the new home screen crashes, you need a way to reach the Home-app selector.
Install KISS from an official channel
Option 1: F-Droid client
- Install or open the official F-Droid client.
- Search for KISS and open the listing that identifies the KISS project and its current release information.
- Read the version, Android requirement, permissions, and update details. The current listing’s stated requirement is Android 5.0 or newer.
- Choose Install. Android may ask you to allow the F-Droid client to install applications from that source. Grant that permission only if you obtained the client from its legitimate channel; you can revoke it later in the system’s special-access settings.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then select Open. Leave your previous launcher installed.
The F-Droid listing recommends using the F-Droid client. It states that its build is signed by F-Droid and corresponds to the source tarball, which gives you provenance information that an unidentified mirror does not provide.

- Open Google Play and search for KISS.
- Check that the listing is the project’s official one, then inspect the version and permissions shown by the store.
- Tap Install and wait for Android to complete the process.
- Open KISS from the store page or your app list. Finish its initial configuration before assigning it as the default.
F-Droid and Google Play can show different release timing or packaging. If a version number differs, compare the publisher identity, release notes, and Android requirement instead of assuming that the larger number is automatically the correct build.
Install Lawnchair from its official project channel
- Open Lawnchair’s official project repository or release page using the project’s own distribution guidance.
- Choose a release identified as official and appropriate for your Android version. Read the release notes for known device or feature limitations.
- If the project provides a package through a store or a downloadable release, use the route the project itself identifies. Do not substitute an old third-party mirror.
- When installing a downloaded package, Android may require permission for the browser or file manager to install unknown applications. Enable that permission only for the specific source you trust, install the package, and then turn the permission back off if you do not need it.
- Open Lawnchair and complete its first-run screens. Keep the existing launcher installed while you configure and test the new one.
The repository is also where you should verify that a download is an official project build. A file name alone is not proof of provenance.
Complete first-run setup without over-granting access
Open the launcher once before changing the default. This lets it create its configuration and exposes optional features that may request permissions.

Configure the home screen
For Lawnchair, decide whether you want an app drawer, widgets, icon packs, fonts, Material colors, and gesture actions. Apply one change at a time so you can identify a setting that causes trouble. For KISS, create the tags and favorites that matter to you, then practice finding an app by typing its name.

A launcher may request access for a specific feature rather than for its basic home-screen role. Package-query access can help an app discover installed packages. An accessibility service may be used for an optional action such as double-tap-to-lock. If you do not need that feature, decline or leave it disabled. Revisit the launcher’s settings later if you decide to enable it.
Do not treat a permission prompt as an automatic requirement. Read what Android says the permission allows, match it to the feature you selected, and avoid granting unrelated access.
Set the new launcher as Android’s default Home app
The setting’s name and location vary across Android versions and manufacturer interfaces. Google Android Help warns: “Some of these steps may vary based on your device.” Use Settings search when the labels below do not match your phone.
Method A: use Settings search
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field and enter Default apps, Home app, or Launcher.
- Open the result that manages default applications. Depending on the phone, it may be called Default apps, Choose default apps, Home app, or Default home app.
- Open the Home or launcher selector.
- Choose KISS, Lawnchair, or the launcher you installed.
- Confirm the selection if Android displays a confirmation dialog, then press Home.
Method B: follow the device’s Apps menu
If search does not find the control, open Settings and look under Apps. Common arrangements include Apps → Default apps → Home app, or Apps → Choose default apps → Home app. The exact hierarchy is manufacturer- and version-dependent; do not disable the old launcher while looking for it.

Method C: accept the Home-button chooser
- Press Home after installing and opening the new launcher.
- If Android displays a chooser, select the new launcher.
- Choose Always rather than Just once if you want Android to save it as the default.
A chooser is equivalent to assigning the Home app in Settings. If you selected Just once, repeat the process and choose Always, or use the Default apps setting directly.
Verify that the switch really worked
Do not judge the installation only by the first successful launch. Use a short checklist before removing anything from the old setup.
- Press Home repeatedly. The selected launcher should appear each time, including after you open another app.
- Open the app drawer or search. Confirm that installed applications are discoverable. In KISS, type several app names and test a contact search if you enabled contact access.
- Test widgets. Add one widget you use regularly, resize it, and confirm that it refreshes.
- Try configured gestures and shortcuts. Test only the gestures you enabled; optional accessibility-based actions should behave as expected before you depend on them.
- Restart the phone. After the reboot, press Home and verify that the same launcher opens without asking you to choose again.
- Check notifications and navigation. Open the notification shade, switch between recent apps, and return Home. These checks reveal whether the launcher is merely installed or is functioning as the system’s home app.
These are practical acceptance checks, not a claim that every device will behave identically. Manufacturer software, navigation mode, widgets, and battery management can affect the result.

Return to the previous launcher
- Open Settings and search for Default apps, Home app, or Launcher.
- Open the Home-app selector.
- Select your original launcher.
- Press Home and confirm that the original interface returns.
If the new launcher is unstable, perform the switch as soon as you can rather than repeatedly restarting into the problematic home screen. You can usually reach Settings through the notification shade or by opening it from the full app list.

Lawnchair’s FAQ states, “Android doesn’t allow you to uninstall your default launcher.” In practice, Android requires another launcher to be selected before it will let you remove the current default. Select the original launcher first, then uninstall the replacement from Settings → Apps or your app store. If you may test the launcher again, leave it installed and simply change the Home app assignment.

Troubleshoot common installation and default-setting problems
The launcher does not appear in the Home-app list
- Open the launcher once; some systems do not list a newly installed home app until its first run.
- Confirm that installation completed and that the app icon opens normally.
- Restart the phone and search Settings again.
- Check that you installed the official package for your Android version rather than an incompatible or incomplete download.
Pressing Home keeps showing a chooser
- Choose Always, not Just once.
- Return to the Home-app selector and assign the launcher directly.
- If the assignment resets after a reboot, check whether the phone’s system software has a separate default-home control or a device-management policy that restores the manufacturer launcher.
The new home screen crashes or is blank
- Use the Home-app selector to return to the previous launcher.
- Reopen the new launcher and remove the most recent widget, icon pack, font, or gesture setting you added.
- Check the project’s release information for an update compatible with your Android version.
- Clear the launcher’s app data only after considering that this will erase its layout and preferences. Android’s Settings → Apps → the launcher → Storage area usually contains this control, but labels vary.
Widgets or gestures do not work
Verify that the widget’s source app is installed and that the widget was added again in the new launcher. Some launcher-specific gestures require accessibility access or another optional permission; enable it only if you understand the feature. If a gesture conflicts with your phone’s navigation mode, disable the gesture and use the system navigation action instead.
Android blocks an installation from a downloaded package
Android may be blocking installs from the browser or file manager that opened the package. Open the relevant special-access setting, allow installs for that one source only if it is an official project channel, retry the installation, and revoke the permission afterward. If you cannot verify the package’s origin, do not bypass the block; use F-Droid, Google Play, or the official Lawnchair release route instead.
Keep the installation secure and maintainable
- Track the source. Remember whether you installed KISS through F-Droid or Google Play, or obtained Lawnchair through its official project channel, so future updates come from the same trusted route.
- Read release information. Check Android compatibility and permission changes before accepting an update.
- Review optional access after updates. A new feature may add a permission request. Keep only the capabilities you use.
- Preserve a rollback path. Leave the previous launcher installed until the new one has passed your restart, widget, search, and navigation checks.
- Back up what the launcher supports. If the launcher offers a settings or layout export, use it before experimenting with major changes. Do not assume a backup from one launcher can be imported into another.
Which approach should you choose?
Choose KISS when speed comes from typing
KISS is the better fit if you want to press Home, type a few letters, and open an app or contact without maintaining several icon pages. Its small footprint and search-first design reduce visual complexity. The trade-off is that people who depend on a highly arranged grid, many widgets, or extensive theming may find it less familiar.
Choose Lawnchair when you want Android’s familiar layout with more control
Lawnchair suits users who expect a conventional home screen and app drawer but want Pixel-like styling, Material color options, widgets, icon packs, and fonts. Its flexibility also means more settings to configure and more opportunities for a widget, gesture, or customization layer to affect troubleshooting.
Keep both during the evaluation
Installing one launcher does not require an immediate commitment. Assign it as the default, perform the verification checklist, and retain the previous launcher while you decide. Switching the Home app is reversible; deleting the old launcher before the replacement is stable removes the simplest recovery option.
